Birdhousing has beautiful photography of many different types of birdhouses, both functional and whimsical. In comparison, there is more photography than information. A fun book to browse, especially if you collect birdhouses. I would not use it as a reference text.

WHEN IT COMES TO GARDENING, TEXAS IS A WHOLE NUTHER COUNTRY.......2000-08-03
My friend and I are in friendly competition to see who can keep this book checked out of the library the longest. It is the BEST gardening book for Texans and Southerners, especially South Texans. No other garden book has the no-nonsense information that Sam Cotner provides. After hearing him lecture at a Master Gardener's meeting, I begged him to get the book reprinted but he said it was too expensive. It is a real loss for those of us who are by-passed by most gardening shows, books and magazines.
Texas Gardener's Bible.......2000-06-03
A fellow gardener, who claimed it was her favorite, loaned me this book . I have to admit, it's become my favorite too. The book is arranged alphabetically by vegetable and has problems, causes and solutions for each. I've found it indispensable. It's also written in an easily-understood manner. A must-have for serious vegetable gardeners!

This work provides a careful historical analysis of the methods and contents of the `De Trinitate' of Boethius and the `Expositio' of Aquinas. It is also the first comprehensive philosophical and theological analysis of Aquinas' `Expositio' to be based on the modern critical edition of the Latin text and in the light of mid- and late-20th-century advances in thomistic scholarship. In this study the author locates the reconstruction of Boethius undertaken by Aquinas, and radically documents the dialectical themes of `agnosia' and `remotion' in this work. Such documentation aims to provide a higher level of understanding of the structure of the `cu Expositio' than is possible with mid-20th-century approaches which have emphasized participationist, analogical and transcendental thematics.

Book Description
The Cure at Troy is Seamus Heaney's version of Sophocles' Philoctetes. Written in the fifth century BC, this play concerns the predicament of the outcast hero, Philoctetes, whom the Greeks marooned on the island of Lemnos and forgot about until the closing stages of the Siege of Troy. Abandoned because of a wounded foot, Philoctetes nevertheless possesses an invincible bow without which the Greeks cannot win the Trojan War. They are forced to return to Lemnos and seek out Philoctetes' support in a drama that explores the conflict between personal integrity and political expediency.
Heaney's version of Philoctetes is a fast-paced, brilliant work ideally suited to the stage. Heaney holds on to the majesty of the Greek original, but manages to give his verse the flavor of Irish speech and context.

"The Cure at Troy," translated by Seamus Heaney offers a delightful translation of Sophocles' "Philoctetes." With a compelling tale from anchient times layed out before him, Heaney applies colloquial speach diction to the play. This accessability offers the audience a window into the basic moral struggle occuring at the heart of the work. A finly crafted story draws the reader to the characters. A worthwhile read.
The Cure At Troy.......2003-03-19
Seamus Heaney pulls through again with his brilliant translation of Sophocles' Philoctetes. The tragic story of the forgotten hero, Philoctetes, provides a unique insight into the conflicts between personal moral beliefs and political calling. Odysseus persuades the heroic Neoptolemus into tricking the mamed Philoctetes into giving up the bow of Hercules. This act challenges the admired traits of the ancient world and draws into question the importance of personal beliefs. As each character represents a different aspect of the Greek world, a fight for beliefs - fidelity, pity, piety - endures. As for the translation itself, Heaney provides a beautiful interpretation of the story as seen in the words of the chorus:
History says, Don't hope
On this side of the grave.
But then, once in a lifetime
The longed-for tidal wave
Of justice can rise up,
And hope and history rhyme.
This enriched translation strays slightly from the ancient text in order to enhance the understanding of the modern reader. Overall, this fast-moving play entices and enchants through a lyrical harmony like no other. Bravo, Seamus. Bravo.

Seamus Heaney's version of trials for the Greek archer entrusted with Hercules' infallible bow and arrows gives us affirmation and points of reflection. Heaney does not dash the ancient dialogue style on the rocky island; rather it is enriched for the modern reader. Honoring the timelessness of Sophocles, Heaney allows today's reader to make comparisons of private nature and choices with the public need and will. The hero, Achilles' son, Neoptolemus, finds that the strategy to take Troy for the Greeks runs counter to his nature of honesty and integrity. We wrestle with him over the choices. We tumble with him when he loses his grip. We crawl back to sure footing along side the hero. I found myself understanding the characters based on different experiences in my life. Philoctetes bemoans his ill-fated injury which leaves him abandoned and full of vengeance. Human empathy allows him to examine his tight grip on his woundedness without denying what he has endured. Odysseus, the pragmatic lieutenant of war, is shown for his utility and foibles. As in all Greek plays, the chorus calls the characters and the reader to reflection, "...For my part is the chorus, and the chorus is more or less a borderline between the you and the me and the it of it." Heaney got the "it of it" for us to take our own measure.

Good descriptions but useless as a driving guide.......2007-04-12
This "driving guide" lacks a detailed map of the region it is describing. Instead, it provides the suggested tour maps in various parts of the region. However, those maps lack clarity and sufficient detail as well making them useful only if one drives the exact route described in the text. Therefore, the book is rather useless as a driving guide, but can be used to supplement a regular map because it has informative descriptions of various points of interest.

An inspiring little book.......2002-01-02
Harry Flood Byrd, Jr. Unless you're a citizen of Virginia or a follower of political trivia, that's not a name that sounds terribly distinguished or familiar. However, in 1970, Harry Flood Byrd, Jr. was -- much like James Jeffords thirty-one years later -- briefly at the center of the national awareness when he made history by leaving his longtime patrons (Virginia's then all-powerful Democratic Party, which had been practically created by Byrd's namesake and father) and winning reelection to the U.S. Senate as an Independent and serving two more terms before retiring in 1982. Defying the Odds is Byrd's own account of both the conflicts that caused him to leave the Democratic Party and the subsequent campaign where he truly did the defy the odds by winning a clear majority of the votes over both a Republican and a Democratic candidate. Seen as something of an interesting oddity in its day, Byrd's victory is all the more relavent today as more and more American voters express a dissatisfaction with the current two party system and third parties continue to struggle to find a meaningful voice in modern politics.
Byrd's brief book is a likeable account and its hard not to respect the former Senator while reading it. At no point does he descend into petty backbiting or the type of self-righteous rhetoric that all-too often seems to distinguish modern day political memoirs. Instead, Byrd truly does come across as a member of that rare and disappearing breed -- the true Southern gentleman who treats everyone -- even those he might disagree with politically -- with proper respect (such a contrast to the politics we've all grown to know!). As well, Byrd explains his reasoning and beliefs in a clear, concise tone that leaves no doubt to his true reasons for leaving his party. Nor does his minimize the political risks in his decision. While Byrd may superficially resemble Jeffords, the differences become rather clear and illuminating while reading Byrd's book. Unlike Jeffords, Byrd was basically leaving the majority party of the U.S. Senate and turning against the political establishment of his state. (As opposed to Jeffords who pretty much was the only Republican in Vermont -- a state that, unlike Byrd's Virginia, also had a clear history of electing and reelecting independents).
Reading this book, its hard not to respect Harry Flood Byrd, Jr. Which doesn't make this a perfect book. There is something truly admirable about the fact that Byrd has clearly decided not to use a ghost writer to express his beliefs and his story. At the same time, Byrd is somewhat of a dry writer and there are many times when one wishes he'd go into a bit more detail. However, for political completists, this is a valuable personal record of an apparently rather modest man who managed to make political history.
Splendid and to the point history by the man who made it........1999-03-03
A crisp, clear account of the former Senator's historic 1970 Senate race when he put principle ahead of expediency, and left the party of his fathers, because the party had left its principles, to run as an independent for the U.S. Senate from his native Virginia. Byrd enunciates his reasons and recounts the features of his campaign; a campaign in which he solidly out-polled the combined votes of the Democratic and Republican candidates. In a current Chapter, Byrd reviewing the current loss of political direction in Washington--including the manifest difference between Newt Gingrich's brand of Republicanism in 1994 and his lost way in 1998-- goes on to describe the circumstances, which might make it possible for an independent to be elected President in the near future. Those who are disastified with what is going on in Washington should consider this a must read!

A wonderful reference to the whales of the world..........2001-03-09
I love this book. It's a large coffee table book, yet at the same time it's a handy reference (almost a field guide) to the whales of the world. It has over 200 pages of information and hundreds of color photographs of whales from all over the planet. The whales are broken down into types: Baleen versus Toothed, and then each type is covered by species. Included are: Baleen whales; Rorqual whales; the Gray whale; Right Whales; Sperm whales; Beaked and Bottlenose whales; Oceanic Dolphins; Beluga and Narwhal; Freshwater Dolphins; and Porpoises.
The introduction has lots of important information about whales, and a number of diagrams showing some of the differences between whales. I liked best the chart that shows the relative size of the various whales in relation to one another. This is followed by pages of information on each individual type of whale, showing a photo (if available), a diagram, and containing information about the whale.
All in all this is a great book if you're interested in these wonderful creatures, and it helps to differentiate between the various types. It's worth looking for even though it's out of print.

The truth behind One Life to Live!.......2007-01-12
I have to say that I first saw Ellen Holly playing Judge Frances Collier on Guiding Light. As a caucasian american woman and a lifelong soap fan, I was shocked to learn that she was dismissed from One Life to Life. I wanted her role on Guiding Light to be expanded. Ellen added a touch of class to the show. At least that job provided income to pay some bills, besides Ellen Holly is an intelligent resourceful woman. It took me only a couple of hours to read this magnificient book. I still think Ellen Holly is a very attractive and talented woman. I was glad that finally somebody broke the image of the happy loving family in the soaps. The soaps have never been an easy environment. I have to say that Ellen deserved more than being dismissed and the pitiful salary that she and her co-stars like Al Freeman and Lillian Hayman received is awful. I would say that Agnes Nixon should have done more for Ellen. Despite the bitterness and anger, Ellen maintains her dignity and most of all, she is proud to be who and what she is. She could have easily passed herself off to get work and roles but she chose to lead her career with honoring her family history and ancestry. Still, I would like to see Ellen act whether on stage, television or film. I wish Ellen the best of luck. I don't care what the race of the character is as long as it's played appropriately. Ellen fought for Carla Gray. Sure, people think that soap couples become boring after a while but I don't think so. I think they could be just as interesting. As a soap fan, I love watching familiar characters like Carla and Ed Hall but their departures were just awful. I still wish the best for Ellen and this book is quite an interesting read. Ellen is true to herself and to her readers. I think she has mixed feelings about playing Carla but she is grateful to her fans and people who fondly remember her. No, she never made stardom that she deserved but she is in many ways a star.
What a Phenomenal Woman!.......2005-05-18
I grew up watching Ms. Holly on OLTL in the 70's. I remember the Ebony magazine cover that had her and Al Freeman, Jr. being married on the show. I read this powerful book many years ago and felt her pain from the first page. When she spoke of being passed for White, she stood her ground and her position was clear. She made it firm in every role she played that she was Black and proud. This sista is a Queen on all fronts. When I finished her book (which is a powerful read), I was so disguted with the way OLTL treated her I stopped watching the show in protest. To see some of the actors on that show win award after award with no talent at all turned my stomach. This woman deserves a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Daytime Emmys because she put her dues in. She laid the groundwork for the Debbi Morgans, Bianca Fergusons, Shari Headleys, and Veronica Webbs of Daytime TV. If it wasn't for Ellen Holly puttin' it down the way she did, none of the other African-American daytime actresses I just mentioned would have had a chance at achieving success at a career in the soaps. Thank you Ms. Holly for your sacrifices and your triumphs. You are a quality talent that I have nothin' but respect for. God bless Ellen Holly for being the Queen that she is and thank you for this phenomenal book. It should be required reading! Wherever you are Ellen Holly, I pray that you are well. You are respected and loved by the real fans of OLTL that know what REAL talent is.

I am a voracious reader, but never have I been so captivated by the style and well chosen words of this mesmerizing writer. I felt Ellen's feelings and found myself hanging on her every word, as she guided me through the events of her life. I was especially taken by her strength as she received the many attacks on her African background. She responded with pride and dignity and always seemed to leave the attacker disarmed. I was so taken by her genealogy, I felt compelled to travel the road to the African prince who escaped from the slave ship. I have validated most of the genealogical information on her prince ancestor and have enjoyed the exercise.
This book is a must read for anyone who is interested in history, the theatre, or just want to get to know this beautiful, charming, and well educated lady.

Every Black actress/writer in Hollywood MUST read this........2000-02-16
If you are an actress or screenwriter in Hollywood or New York, read this and think about it. This is not just another "who I slept with" tell all. Ellen Holly's life is really a cautionary tale about the perils intelligent, ambitious, talented black women face in the entertainment industry (and in life and love of course). Dorothy Dandridge wasn't the only black actress trying to make it in the 1950's and Diahann Carroll is not the only survivor. Ellen Holly, who has written for the New York Times and still writes screenplays, is truly one of the faceless pioneers that opened the door for the Halle Berrys, the Vanessa L.Williams, the Angela Bassetts and the Tina Andrews in Hollywood today.
I was hooked from word one........1999-10-16
I initially bought Ellen's book because I was an avid OLTL fan. I wanted to read about the years that she spent as "Carly Gray" on my favorite soap opera. Ellen Holly is such an eloquent writer that she had me enthralled with her life from page one. I forgot why I first bought the book and I didn't want it to end.
If Ms. Holly wrote another book, I would buy it the minute it hit the stands; that is how great I think her writing is.
