A Field Guide to Western Wildflowers.......2005-06-12
Personally, I think the Peterson Guides are far more helpful than the Audobon publications. As mentioned in other reviews, Peterson uses illustrations organized by color and flower configuration. The illustrations are very well done. Audobon uses photos. The idea is that you match your specimen to the photo it most closely matches and follow further identification from there. The books are complimetary and work well together; however, if you can only choose one-- get the Peterson book. Overall, I have had much better success keying out plants with Peterson and repeatedly have found the plant I am looking for overlooked in the Audobon text. The truth be known, I doubt I will ever buy a Audobon plant book again-- perhaps they are better with birds.
Pacific States Wildflowers........2001-06-22
I like the book and the topic, however the binding is is such bad shape that the book is useless in the field or for a more robust usage. Can this be fixed?
A Useful Tool.......2000-04-04
Though this title may be a little pricy, it is a must have for residents of California, Oregon, and Washington. At any rate, any family within which there is a flower collecter, should have a copy of this excellent resource. Though my family originally purchased this title because of a biology project assigned to my daughter, it has since opened up an interesting world of the natural plant life of this area and even those farther away.
Excellent Field Guide to help identify Wildflowers.......1999-07-06
I take this guide (and the Audobon Society Field Guide to North American Wildflowers-- west) on all my field trips to identify wildflowers. Though Peterson has fewer real photos, it does have better aids to identify specific wildflowers, as it is organized by color, as well as number and types of petals. The sketches help me do a preliminary id on the wildflower.

Useful, even if you don't stay on route.......2007-10-10
Last summer my brother and I went to Ireland. Using this as our only guide we were able to easily get around. The maps were good, the adivce was great, and I'm planning on going back next summer with the same book(unless they release a new edition).

This book gave a great overview and some routes through Ireland via bicycle. As I still have not totally planned my trip, I cannot tell how the recommendations are, but Lonely Planet guides are usually been excellent, in my experience. I wish it had more information on choosing between a guided and a DIY tour, as I am now trying to decide whether to do all the work in carrying luggage, making reservations and finding bikes B&Bs myself, or spending a little extra. It has good information about bicycles and the gear to bring along as well.

good level of detail about some events in US history.......2006-10-01
In this short book, the authors attempt to explain the many social changes in American society since the Civil War. The writing is well phrased. As you should expect from an 8th edition. Subjects vary from the role of women in the household and workforce, to blacks in society. Key events like the Great Depression get careful treatment, as they were pivotal in triggering huge changes.
Some events, like the home front during World War 2, have descriptions of what it was like that many other textbooks often omit. Like the endemic overcrowding in places like San Francisco and San Diego, as thousands of families sought housing that was often shoddy and overpriced. The sheer overriding priority of the war effort caused this. But other texts gloss over what the resultant conditions were for many families.
The treatment of the Civil Rights era is perhaps a little abbreviated. But that may be ok. Many other books cover that in depth.
Great for a survey course.......2004-06-09
Rather than an endless list of cold hard facts, as normal textbooks can at times be, Social Fabric offers two dozen essays that give you a glimpse of what life was like during different eras in the history of the United States. The representation of native Americans is far superior than the stereotypes put forth by the textbooks I read in school.
However, as much a richer source as this book is, it's not as comprehensive as a normal textbook, and essays at times seem biased. After all, the purpose of an essay is to make a point, and as such, may only be one side of the story.
Excellent Collection of Readings.......2000-06-16
The Social Fabric presents a detailed array of readings insocial history for any United States History course. The readingsspecifically encourage two main revelations: U.S. History has many more interesting stories than the textbooks reveal and the historian's craft is much more complex than many students admit. The anthology is entirely engaging with details about daily life and customs. This book makes great general reading and should be required for all U.S. History courses.

I was very disappointed with this book. The title " Line and Color Magic" suggested to me that there would be many examples using colors. Captions for the picture and diagram examples stated to observe the colors used - this is a little difficult when NO colors are used throughout the whole book. A waste of money.
Line and color magic fell short of expectations.......2003-03-10
Stained glass is a very visual art and there were not enough examples. The few shown were sometimes of poor quality. There are only 2 color pages the entire book. One showed stained glass pieces the other paper cut outs poorly reproduced. She talks about the magenta square on the yellow paper that everyone thought was green. I don't know if that was suppose to be the affect, it was an error, or a poor reproduction. The photography was poor because of lots of shadows. Many of the color points were done is black and white which is good when she is talking about value. It is also helpful when narrowing on 1 part of the design. She continually talks about a good design includes all elements: line, color, texture and composition but there is only the one page with its 4 color examples and not much diversity 3 of the 4 pieces shown. If you really want to learn about color I recommend "Color Play: Easy Steps to Imaginative Color Quilts". It is filled with wonderful examples and explanations. It shows the same quilts done with different variations on a color theme to show how it changes the overall look and movement the quilt. The theory is the same. Quilt books also show you how to mixture different textures, about scale which was completely left out of Line and Color magic.
I don't care much for the artist style and most of the book focuses on her art. She talks about making design individual so it would have been extremely helpful to see her points made with other styles and subjects. She likes focus on people as a subject.
"The Art of Illusion A Tromple L'oeil Painting Course" by Janet Shearer does a FAR better job about explaining perspective and good details and exercises on how to do this. Line and color magic made some very good points this area and had some good examples, I just didn't think it when far enough.
What I was hoping to find was information on converting a photo or greeting card into stained glass. An example was given with a ad but it was an indoor scene without much detail. I wanted to know how to take a more complicated image and simplify it and how to place the cut lines the free/negative space. One design book mentioned shapes to avoid. I was hoping this would address difficult shapes too. It had nothing on watching out for difficult or impossible cuts. I wanted to learn about reinforcements the when and how. It was mentioned but no details were given so I still don't know anything about it.
The book claimed it talked about displaying your glass. It mentioned lighting conditions, different exposures and how they had an affect but that was all. One chapter she mentioned how a border could hold your attention in a piece, but she didn't go into border design at all. She never mentioned framing other to say it could help provide strength. There was no mention of direction of glass patterns and how to take advantage of that. Lighting is different for cabinets but she never mentioned that. She did mention that the pattern should flow between between panels as if the frame wasn't there.

This book is not very good. It didn't give any new information about the breed. It just says the same thing about every breed. The only thing different about these types of books are the dog pictures on the front. If you really want to know anything about the Lhasa Apsos breed then don't waste your money by buying this book!

French flower painter Pierre-Joseph Redouté is regarded as one of the best of the botanical illustrators in the tradition of aristocratic patronage stretching back to the Renaissance. Between 1817 and 1824 he completed the three volumes of ³Les Roses,² his most celebrated work. Flowers of Chateau Malmaison.......2003-11-18
I read about Redoute while researching the history of Chateau Malmaison. Malmaison is a small property in Moulis, which is in the Medoc region of Bordeaux in France. Yes, Chateau Malmaison makes wine... their 2000 vintage is fabulous, and worth looking for.
But anyway, Josephine de Beauharnais purchased Malmaison in 1799 for her and Napolean, and in 1800-1802, Malmaison (together with the Tuileries) was the seat of government.
Josephine planted and expanded the rose gardens of the Chateau, and was very interested in natural science. She commissioned Redoute to paint the rose garden of Malmaison (and their lilies, too).
If Redoute's work is interesting to you, you may want to research a little bit about Empress Josephine and Chateau Malmaison. At the very least, consider buying a bottle of 2000 Chateau Malmaison wine... and browse this book in a few years over a glass or two. That would be the next best thing to visiting the rose garden in person.
Exquisite!.......2002-08-09
Pierre-Joseph Redoute was the Audubon of flowers--particularly roses and lilies. His artwork is stunning and he depicts the various varieties of roses in immaculate detail. An absolutely gorgeous book, published by Taschen and printed in Italy, my version is about 5"X 8" page size and the ISBN number is 3-8228-1356-7 (English version).
For the lover of roses, any illustrated book by Pierre-Joseph Redoute will be a treasure to admire for years.

A revised Greek Text (the first in a century) and English translation (the first in any modern language) of the Art of Political Speech by a writer known as the Anonymous Seguerianus (ca. A.D. 200) and the Art of Rhetoric of Apsines of Gadara (ca. A.D. 230), with introduction, notes, and indices. These works provide evidence of how rhetoric was taught in Greek in the early centuries of the Roman Empire and show the continued development of an Aristotelian tradition before acceptance of the reorganization of the subject by Hermogenes. They complement each other in that the Anonymous was especially interested in debates about rhetorical theory, while Apsines' primary interest was in analysis of speeches of Demosthenes and other orators and in teaching declamation.

Imogen without End--.......2005-11-25
I can remember shedding some tears when Ms. Cunningham died. She was a hero of mine in the 70's when I was in college studying photography. This is a good overview of her work. Ms. Cunningham was never the greatest photographer of her generation, or any other. However, some of her photography is great. No, what made Ms. Cunningham great was the amazing length of her career and her willingness, until nearly the end of her life, to extend herself and experiment with new things. How many photographers have basically petered out when they have achieved some fame, to spend decades just printing their old work? Not Imogen--she indeed spoke with some bitterness near the end of her life about the unrecognized years in her career. She was unique, particularly for today--a woman who practiced environmental portraiture, going to people's homes and businesses to photograph them. She lived a lifestyle close to penury, yet her life can serve as an illustration to all of us exactly how little having money means to full and rich life. For me growing up, she showed how the love of photography can be separated from the preciousness of 'fine art'--all the while creating fine art. I'd recommend as a companion to this book, the volume "Portrait of Imogen", long out of print. It was compiled by Judy Dater, herself a fine photographer. It is a book of interviews with Imogen's contemporaries and a great insight into this complicated personality. In the end, and particularly after nearly thirty years since her death, Ms. Cunningham still earns notice as one of photography's greatest personalities.
An adventure.......2000-08-14
Ideas Without End provides a great introduction to Imogen Cunningham's work. It includes a short biography, but focuses mainly on the plethora of beautiful pictures, showing a wide selection of them. Cunningham's photos are the kind that draw you into them, and bring you to the realization that a flower is so much more than just a flower, that there is more to a body than just nudity, and that everyday items possess a beauty of their own. The format is a bit unhandy, but the contents more than make up for that. In short, the book is an experience not to be missed.

This book presents a good inside look at the 1989 democracy movement from the viewpoint of a key student leader. The reader learns about some aspects of the movement that have not been widely publicized, including the trials and tribulations of one of the principal organizers of the movement.
Also, a good documentary film about the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests is Carma Hinton's "The Gate of Heavenly Peace." A condensed version of this film was broadcast on PBS Frontline in 1996.
This is not Frontline.......2006-04-21
I just watched the recent Frontline about Tank Man, the man who bravely defied the line of tanks in Beijing, and went to Amazon to find books about the subject. Up came this book, among others, and I remember almost throwing it across the room over ten years ago when I read it. You have a guy who escaped, knew a few people involved, and whose only personal involvement is from the outside. He had no balls, and never dared risk himself. Sure, he knows the figureheads, the history, and can write about what happened as if was there. But he was hiding in his room, making himself out to be a hero. If you want to read a book with the only suspense being whether to finish it or not, then this is the one.

Too many history books deal in dry facts. This book tells the story of China and what led up to the Tiananmen Square massacre from the point of view of one young student who was pulled, sometimes against his will, into the thick of the political arena. I found it fascinating!

I found this book very informative about the events leading up to the Tiananmen Square occupation by the students and workers in June of 1989. Since traveling for one month in China this past year, I have been reading alot of personal accounts on China by people who have escaped or left the country. This was a nice change; a book speaking of the efforts by the citizens to change the way things are there and by peaceful means. This book really makes one appreciate the freedoms and democracy that we take for granted in this country.
Moving story of Chinese family life and the student movement.......1998-04-27
There are two wonderful things about this book: first, Shen Tong's charming account of life growing up in Beijing in an exceptional Chinese family; and then the deeply moving story of the growth of the student movement and its tragic surpression. The courage of the students, and later people from all walks of life, in their struggle for a more open society is very impressive. This book should not be out of print.
