4 out of 5 stars The handiest pocket guide to flowers of the SW USA.......2006-10-16

According to ecologist Paul R. Ehrlich, "In this century, no one has done more to promote an interest in living creatures than Roger Tory Peterson, the inventor of the modern field guide." Peterson's "Guide to the Birds" - "the first modern field guide" - was published in 1934. Its pioneering approach relied on the use of visual characters rather than technical descriptions to identify species. This was achieved by grouping similar species together on a plate, using clear, two-dimensional illustrations, and pointers to key field marks as well as succinct text, a combination known as the Peterson Identification System. That revolutionary style was later applied to a host of field guides covering anything from the night sky to moths and geology to mushrooms and including the present volume.

"Southwestern and Texas Wildflowers" is Number 31 in the Peterson Field Guide Series, published in 1984 and still in the original edition. The format will, of course, be very familiar to all who have ever held or used a Peterson Field Guide - and to those it will probably be self-recommending. This volume treats 1,505 species found in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado. Over 1,500 illustrations are provided, some in colour, but the majority as clear line-drawings. The succinct text for each species is conveniently set opposite the plate depicting the plant.

Clearly this guide cannot and does not attempt to be a comprehensive guide to the flora of the region. However, I have found it to be an indispensable guide on my travels to Texas and Arizona. Personally, I much prefer the concise, densely packed format of the Peterson Field Guides to the newer photographic guides, of which there is now a plethora. However, beginners often seem to prefer the latter. In that case, a handy alternative for Texas might be Tull & Miller's "Wildflowers, Trees and Shrubs of Texas" which treats 600 species or, for Arizona, Epple and Epple's "Plants of Arizona" which covers 850 species.

This book seems to be a Southwestern and Texas version of Newcomb's Wildflower Guide - though the organization is different as this one is organized based on color (with B&W drawings?). Descriptive information is pretty much the same as well as the drawings - the vast majority of which are in black and white - and the color ones don't have enough detail to help much with identification - at least not for this beginner.

              Book Description

Come along with Frommer's and discover two of Asia's most intriguing destinations. Our author has scoured every inch of this region, and she'll share her cultural insights and favorite discoveries with you. Her guide is much more complete and in-depth than its major competitor.

In Singapore, you'll find the best places to stay, from high-tech business hotels to affordable finds, plus an amazing array of dining choices. Follow our author's fantastic walking tours, which introduce you to hidden gems in each ethnic neighborhood you'll find Hindu and Buddhist temples and Islamic mosques mixed in with modern high-rises, colonial architecture, and even a real-live rain forest still growing at the edge of the urban area.

In Malaysia, we'll take you beyond bustling Kuala Lumpur to discover beach resorts; the colonial architecture and amazing dining scene in Penang; idyllic islands; traditional villages; and great opportunities to shop for Malaysian handcrafts. We'll even visit Borneo, where rivers meander through dense tropical rain forests, beaches stretch for miles, and caves snake on for miles. In the many national parks that protect this spectacular jungle, you'll meet tiny deer, tinier owls, monkeys, and the increasingly rare orangutan. Experience all the adventure with Frommer's in hand, knowing you can rely on us for accurate information, practical advice, and useful maps.

              1 out of 5 stars Mostly Useless.......2007-07-14

As most other reviewers have noted, this book's title is completely misleading. It is a mediocre travel guide to Singapore with a small subsection on Malaysia. To put this into perspective, Kuala Lumpur's metro area has a population of 6.9 million yet gets 15 pages of coverage in this book. Singapore, with a population of 4.5 million, gets 167 pages. Most of the Malaysian island sections only have hotel reviews which cover large all-encompassing resort hotels.

I got the feeling from reading this book that it is targeted to tourists whose primary priority is finding a large hotel room just like back home. No walks are included. Many unhelpful comments are included like "The [train] lines don't seem to connect in any logical way" (KL Rail) without suggesting solutions. We ended up barely touching the book and cribbing from another traveler's Lonely Planet guide, which was more helpful overall.

Luckily, we did have The Rough Guide to Singapore which was much more useful for the Singapore leg of our trip and had better maps and suggested agendas. Eating recommendations were hit or miss, of the places we tried in Singapore many were nothing special or seemed to be catering to timid palates.

2 out of 5 stars Mayalsia? Look Elsewhere!.......2006-01-13

Although the title of this book would make one think that both the CITY-STATE of Singapore & the COUNTRY of Malaysia would receive coverage equal to their size, think again. Two-thirds of the book is devoted to tiny Singapore and the rest to huge (in comparison) Malaysia. I guess it's not so surprising when you learn that the author lives in Singapore and is married to a Singaporian! Frommer should be ashamed of their title. It should more accurately be "Singapore with a Section on Malaysia"!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed in Scanty Info on Malaysia.......2004-04-05

I just purchased this book in anticipation of a trip to Malaysia....so my review is written without having yet been on the trip.

However, this book lacks some basic information on Malaysia that I expect in a travel guide in order to plan a trip, for example, more fleshed out information on safety, health, exercise (and more) that is usually found in Frommer's guides and is found in the section on Singapore.

The *ONE* map of Kuala Lumpur is inadequate to even find the things mentioned in the accompanying text.

And when trying to figure out what to do with a few extra days from Kuala Lumpur, there is no information on how to get to the sites suggested, nor how long it takes! No web sites or email addresses listed for the outfitters mentioned - perhaps they don't exist, but I doubt it.

There were other inadequacies I noted in the section on Malaysia as well, but these suffice as examples of why I find this book of poor quality compared to most Frommer's books.

For the first time ever, I have to say I am very disappointed in a Frommer's guide.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every dollar!.......2000-08-15

I just spent a month on business in Singapore and couldn't have made it without this book. Everything was right on, from restaurant reviews to prices for hotels. Jennifer has a great sense of humor and is right on with her recommendations and insights. I travel a lot and will buy Frommers from now on.

3 out of 5 stars This book has too much info on Singapore and none on Borneo.......1999-07-08

Frommer's info is well-written and clear but 228 out of 299 pages deal only with Singapore and this book has no information at all about Sarawak and Sabah, the best places in Malaysia in my opinion. The info on Taman Negara Park and it's activities, such as rafting were scanty and there was no info on the islands of the eastern peninsula.

                            Book Description

For all who live in the sunbelt regions of America--whether southeastern, south-central, or southwestern--Sunbelt Gardening shows how year-round blooms are perfectly possible in hot climates. Author Tom Peace addresses the distinction between drought-tolerant and moisture-loving plants and explains which ones will work best in your garden, based on the specific region of the country in which you live. Most importantly, novice and expert gardener alike will learn how to succeed in cultivating exquisite, varied beauty throughout the hot summer months.

5 out of 5 stars A gardener who can write!.......2005-11-29

This is a really, really useful book for those of us who only get two seasons...(searingly hot and humid, cloudy and humid), but the best feature is that the guy writes well and sensibly---no boring stuff, and no high-flown references to white-flower rooms at Sissinghurst. This ain't England.
I may start taking the book with me to the big box stores, in order to reduce the death toll among plants that never should have been sold here in the first place!

5 out of 5 stars Great Advice, Beautiful Photos, Simply Amazing!.......2000-04-14

In his first effort as a full-length work, Tom Peace has succeeded where others have failed. Finally, a resource for those of us who have longed for a lesson in hot-weather gardening! Rather than a book of charts and lists of what to plant when, the author provides us with the tools to make informed decisions. Resplendent with pages and pages of color photographs of the author's work, real-life examples of hot-weather gardens, this book is not to be missed. I can't wait to get started on my garden!

5 out of 5 stars A valuable reference for gardeners in the sunbelt region.......2000-04-11

Gardeners in zones 7, 8 and 9 often endure drought and extremely hot and humid temperatures. Our plants often suffer as a result. This book, divided by sections of the southeast and the southwest, shows what plants will do well in these climates. The author also discusses winter gardening and how the sunbelt gardener can successfully have color in their gardens year round. The book is well organized and the photographs are spectacular. It will serve as a valuable reference to gardeners in this region.

I saw it as part of a class. Amazing play Shaplin is one of the strongest new playwrights out there, and he came from SLC. Yay! You really have to see this play (all lines are delivered facing out, the actors do not look at each other) to fully appreciate it, but still a powerful read. I just ordered his collection of three plays. Go support your local theater!

Very clinical view of CT Corrections
This books reads like a logbook entry, nice and safe. Most people who read this and know nothing about working in the Connecticut Department of Corrections will love this book. If you read only this book, you will be left with a small part of the real story for what it's like working as a prison guard in this state. I don't blame Mr. Fedorowich for playing it safe in his writings. He was a guard, and then Lieutenant from quite a while ago. He is what we call someone from the 'old school'. Never snitch, never tell all! I can assure you that what he did write was very true, but he didn't get into the office politics, the administration mind games, the administrative's untold policy of retaliation for those who do tell their stories of sexual or job harassment, such as Lee Dickerson, who DID tell all in his Connecticut Department of Corrections books, and suffered the consequences of a demotion from Lieutenant back to officer, and being sued on a few occasions, along with the job harassment for being brave enough to tell about the underground, down and dirty, illegal tacts of many of the administrators who got away with so many unlawful acts due to their positions in power from back then, up to including to this very day. If you think reading Fedorowich's book was intense, reading Dickerson's books, if you can even find any, will make you cringe and wonder how anyone can survive 20 years of service and retire with their health and integrity, after being subjected to years of bizarre and cruel managing tactics that would never be allowed in the 'real world of ' business. Even now, in 2004, sexual harassment, job harassment, and illegal business procedures continue to take place against subordinate staff though a strict sexual and job harassment policy is in full effect and keeps getting revised while a multitude of cases go unresolved and the cycle of abuse continues. If you think watching the inmates is the hard part of working as an officer in corrections, you'd be quite wrong. It's the archaic administrative business practices which has produced the number one sickness in this job, that of paranoia and stress. No wonder the statistics show that on average, an officer lives only until between the ages of 58-62. Retire and die. It's seems to be what the state wants so that the officers will not collect on their hazardous duty paycheck. Otherwise, the continued abuse and retaliation wouldn't continue. So, be advised that the book is quite a good read, but that it is merely a small part of what actually goes on in the Connecticut Department of Corrections.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reference for Consumers, Hobbyists, Jewelers Interested in Gemstones........2007-07-18

"Gem Identification Made Easy" opens up the world of gem identification to the jeweler, hobbyist and the curious. I didn't come away with the impression that gem identification is easy, but that some kinds of identification are easy, inexpensive and FUN! Antoinette Matlins makes it clear that the bar to entry into gemology is low. Practice, diligence, and three small instruments that cost less than $200 will enable you to identify 80% of colored gemstones and their look-alikes as well as diamonds and most of their imitations. Since there are at least 3 different gemstones on the market in every color and no shortage of synthetics and enhancement treatments, the skills within the pages of "Gem Identification Made Easy" are invaluable to anyone shopping for gemstones. If gems fascinate you, this book will help you discover if you would like to pursue gemology as a career or serious hobby.

The bulk of "Gem Identification Made Easy" are descriptions of the instruments involved in gem identification, detailed instructions on how to use each, and what they can show you, including many charts which will help you identify stones. The 3 essential instruments that everyone will need are: loupe, Chelsea filter, and dichroscope. The loupe magnifies the stones, revealing inclusions, blemishes, and fillers. The Chelsea filter differentiates between some gems and synthetics. The dichroscope distinguishes single-refracting stones from double-refracting and allows identification of stones by the colors they exhibit. In addition, Ms. Matlins provides instructions for additional tools that one would need to set up a lab: UV lamp, refractometer, microscope. Less essential: spectroscope, polariscope, and immersion cell. For diamonds: SSEF diamond-type spotter and electronic diamond tester. These could cost nearly $3000, but shopping on eBay will bring the price tag down.

The author also dedicates a chapter to "Antique and Estate Jewelry", in which she discusses imitation and alteration techniques frequently found in antique and period jewelry. She advises on how to detect them and includes tables of synthetics and imitations, when they appeared on the market, and characteristics that will help identify them. This is followed by many useful Appendices: a list of gems and look-alikes by color, gem hardness, specific gravities, refractive index tables, tables of dispersion and birefringence, glossary of terms, list of organizations offering gemology workshops or training, equipment suppliers. These are in addition to the many tables and lists in the instrument chapters. Color photos are limited to a center insert, where there are photos of gemstone inclusions and a few other identifying features. "Gem Identification Made Easy" is an easy to understand, practical entry to the fascinating world of gemstones.

The book was good for a primer on gem tools and iidentification but lacked the detail I was seeking. It is an very good book for the beginner for it covers a lot of subjects about gem and the various tools used to identify them. I was seeking more exact detail and this book did not have it.

Having nothing deeper to say than "You should like yourself because it's better than not liking yourself," the author happily inflicts such circular inanities on us as: "You should always try to do the right thing. If you call kids names, start fights, or somehow hurt others, you won't feel good about yourself because you know that you are doing something that is wrong."

When I read the first few parts of the book, I thought it would be very helpful. But I was wrong. First off, its very undetailed and doesn't explain much about the process of making friends. Also, its unrealistic, especially for middle schoolers. I say this because they make it sound like: Compliment a person and they'll be your friend. Or: Smile and they will like you. I don't think thats very helpful. It might be okay for very young kids starting one of the lower grades, but definetly not middle schoolers or even some elementary schoolers.

Shortly after receiving this book, my wife & daughter read it together. At 7 years old and quite shy, she had trouble making friends in 2nd grade.

It's been three weeks since we bought the book, and she still insists on reading it a couple times a week. We believe it gives her confidence to go to school the next morning and interact with her classmates.

My wife insists that our daughter has a new outlook when it comes to school. She has been more playful, and talks more when she comes home. We hope these results continue!

1 out of 5 stars A shallow "How to Win Friends" book inappropriate for kids.......2002-06-01

With an 8-year old son learning how to make friends, and handle new situations at school, I was searching for a book to help him along. This book had suggestions like "smile" and "give people compliments" and I didn't think it was appropriate at all for the issues an 8-year old faces at school. It was way too shallow and didn't address real issues. I did buy another book at the same time from Amazon that was much better - "Good Friends are Hard to Find" and I thought it addressed very specific issues and gave great advice on how to handle each one.

                                                1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2002-03-19

It didn't suit the needs of my child at all, but maybe it would help someone else.

(Baltimore Sun)REVIEW: "[Olson has produced] an absorbing, detailed, comprehensive biography of this intriguing enigma of a man." (Library Journal)REVIEW: "Olson's prose is a rich, almost Jamesian affair, ferociously literate, archly elliptical." (The New York Times)REVIEW: "Stanley Olson has written a superb account." (San Francisco Chronicle)REVIEW: "John Singer Sargent is one heck of a good book. Read it." (The Washington Times Magazine)REVIEW: "This biography conveys vividly and with considerable charm and wit a sense of the social world of the distinguished American portrait painter." (The Virginia Quarterly Review)REVIEW: "This biography rescues Sargent....from the shadows of his famous subjects." (United Press International)AUTHORBIO: STANLEY OLSON, like Sargent, was an American expatriate; born in 1947 in Ohio, he lived in London from 1969 until his untimely death, from a stroke, in 1989. Scholar, writer, dandy, aesthete, gourmet, and impeccable host, he was a much-loved and admired member of London's literary world. He authored Elinor Wylie: A Life Apart and edited the abridged Harold Nicolson: Diaries Letters 1930-1964.

                                                4 out of 5 stars Interesting book.......2006-10-05

I really enjoyed the book. He was an interesting character who seemed to be liked by everyone and didn't take himself too seriously. My only complaint: for a book about a painter the figures are of poor quality.

Ehrman covers the time of The French Wars from the point of view of Pitt and the domestic scene in Britain. The times and troubles of the emerging Industrial nation are captured as are Pitt's fears and concerns. The chapters are thorough and well written, a mass of detail and scholarly work. A recommended work on the period.
