Thought the photos were great and caught the Pug personality in outlandish and funny, digitally enhanced scenarios.
Was disappointed with the size of the publication and the production quality.
Although I was aware that the publication was a paperback, I expected more of a coffee book size and quality.
Fascinating Photographs in a Little Collection.......2007-01-05
This is a small, artsy collection of pug photographs/art. The book is a paperback and is very short, and the pictures range from the abstract to the artsy to the absurd. A pug lover would definitely enjoy this book, as he/she peruses the pug-as-bighorn-sheep or the revised Mount Rushmore. Those expecting straightforward, realistic pug photographs should look elsewhere, as all of the photos are digitally altered in some way, including fantastic situations and vivid colors. But all include pugs!

I have seen the pictures that you will find in this book. The pictures are very creative and the pug is charming. I would recommend this book for young and old alike. It is a must for all pug lovers. This is not your ordinary book of a pug.

FYI - Original illustrations in color still are!.......2001-01-24
I am a lucky owner of the 1904 original edition. I bought this reissue so that I could enjoy reading the text without worrying about damaging my 1904 edition. Comparing the two, the orignal's Parrish color and black & white illustrations are all there in the reissue. Please note that several were NOT color in the original too. The only difference is that the reissue has the color prints situated in a group in the center of the book, whereas (in the original) they are sprinkled throughout and have tissue paper protection. The color print quality is not as crisp as the original, but it is color. The b&w print quality is just as un-crisp as in the original.
FYI - Maxfield Parrish illustrations are not in color.......2000-06-13
I bought this book looking for Maxfield Parrish illustrations. I kept this book because Edith Warton is an incredibly soothing writer.
It should be of note that the text was so wonderfully written that it kept me from returning the book.
Imagine, however, what an incredible book this would be if the Parrish illustrations were not in black and white.
intellectually stimulating garden history.......1998-09-13
I was very excited to find this book and nab a copy of it. (I'm a garden writer and I wanted to get Edith Wharton's perspective on garden history).
Italian gardens, as it turns out, are places for walking, thinking, conversing and relaxing. Their most common elements are paths, hedges, arcades, fountains, pools and grottos. They very seldom utilize color (a feature that is often ofterdone in American gardens), instead concentrating on foliage texture, stone and statuary. Usual plantings are trees, shrubs and vines.
What is most instructive is the layout of these Italian gardens, including the idea of garden rooms and the use of water features (both of which have become immensely popular here in the US, in the last few years). The architecture of the garden is everything, and is an extension of the house. Order, logic and function are paramount in the Italian garden.
Edith Wharton is a brilliant and fascinating guide; literary and historical references abound. A joy to read and to keep for reference.

A must-have well-illustrated overview of italian villas.......2000-11-02
This book is the best all-around overview of the design of Italian Villa Gardens I have found to date. This is largely due to the strength of the analytical diagrams that carefully disect the spatial organization of the villa, and faithfully explore the house-garden relationship that is the essence of these places. If you are an architecture or landscape architecture student interested in the Italian villa, the diagrams are some of the best published sources available. The text is very concise, almost too short...but this also makes the topic useful for the student with more interest in the topic than time. Fortunately the authors know their topic well enough to focus their commentary with great precision.

Garden Architecture in Europe is full of full color photographs and drawings of European gardens. It is full of magnificent inspiration for garden lovers, particularly if you enjoy formal parterres, colannades, terraces and water fountains.
The text mainly comprises historical prose with annecdotal comments, however, these is very little information in relation to designing, building or maintaining the type of garden pictured.
Ideal as a coffee table accessory or waiting room "magazine", this book provides an ejoyable wander through some truly superb classic gardens. It is not suitable for the student.

An Academic View of the Musicals of Sondheim.......2000-07-07
Of all the books currently published on Sondheim's musicals, Gordon gives the best academic treatment to his works. Mainly a formal analysis of the shows, she peppers in enough historical and biographical facts to provide any reader with a better understanding of the plays. The chapter on _Sunday_ is particularly good. It does help to be familiar with the shows before reading, as Gordon wastes little time on plot synopsis. A must for any Sondheim scholar.
Sondheim fan? Wanna become one?.......2000-05-21
This book takes us musical-by-musical through some of the most famous and artistically valuable of Sondheim's musicals (the latest entry being Assassins). Each chapter looks at the musical with a critical eye (or listens with a critical ear, as the case may be) and responds to criticism about the musical in question. This is not a book simply about selling Sondheim - when the author is unimpressed, she lets us know. But Gordan finds much to admire in Sondheim's musicals, and helps us to appreciate that. Each chapter outlines in detail the plot, characters, and songs - especially useful for in-depth study. You can't get much more specific without actually taking out the libretto or following along in the score! All her arguments are well-founded and supported with examples from the text. The use of lyrics is especially appropriate. This book is especially valuable from a literary and theatrical standpoint. The observations on the music itself are correct, but not plentiful, as Gordan's expertise is in theatre, not music. Accessible to the casual audience member and the Sondheim groupie.
Comprehesive and informative for any Sondheim fan........2000-01-19
Whether you are well versed in all of Sondheim or have just seen a show once this books covers everthing from plot, to technique, to reviews. I used this for my thesis on Sondheim and found it very informative.

From A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum through Anyone Can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd, Merrily We Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, and Into the Woods, Sondheim’s music and lyrics prove to be inextricably woven into the fabric of the entire work. Both music and lyrics, Gordon stresses, "grow out of the dramatic idea inherent in the show’s concept and themselves become part of the drama that previous theatre songs would only reflect."
Sondheim, Gordon notes, asks much of an audience that may not want to be challenged. In short, to enjoy a Sondheim play, the audience must participate intellectually. The audience willing to expend the effort will not be cheated, Gordon insists, because Sondheim, throughout his career, has demonstrated that "musical theatre can be serious, poignant, and still exhilarating."
