Book Description
A Great Lakes Wetland Flora is the first field guide to all the vascular plants one is likely to encounter in the wetlands of the Upper Midwest- including the plants of bogs, fens, swamps, marshes and wet meadows-as well as the truly aquatic plants of lakes, ponds, rivers and streams. The book's thoroughness makes it an essential reference for natural resource professionals; its ease-of-use and clear illustrations will appeal to those interested in learning more about these fascinating habitats.
Contents include:
Complete coverage of the aquatic and wetland plants of the Upper Midwest-Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, northern Illinois, and northern Indiana-with general applicability to surrounding areas.
Descriptions and key to major wetland types of the Great Lakes region.
Over 900 plant species in 114 families; each species described (including habitat and range information) and illustrated.
Alphabetically arranged by family within four groups-Ferns and Fern Allies, Conifers, Dicots, and Monocots-for quickly finding and identifying plants.
Easy-to-use keys to each family, genus and species.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wetland status indicator for each species.

Comprehensive AND accessible.......2000-05-26
Far more comprehensive than most similar books for the Great Lakes and upper midwest. Considerably more accessible than the typical work with this breadth. It will be an excellent field reference for wetland professionals, plant ecologists and allied disciplines. The drawings are good quality, picking up key differences in appearance among groups such as the sedges - critical for professional users. I look forward t using it on my trips to wetlands in the northern midwest as both casual botanist and plant ecologist.
Well-organized, informative, and accessible to all........1999-03-09
The Great Lakes region has some good plant books already in use, noteably Plants of the Chicago Region, the flora bible for many. As a practicing wetland professional I am always on the lookout for references that make my life easier. This book really fits the need, while remaining accessible to non-professionals. By providing wetland habitat descriptions, as well as solid information on each family and species, the book really adds to the discussion of the Great Lakes flora. Illustrations in the book are detailed enough to serve as a diagnostic tool, enabling the careful reader to separate similar species readily by eye, as well as by technical detail, a feature lacking in some other regional plant reference books.
Customer Reviews:
Best all-around book.......2003-10-03
I am a graduate student in wetland science, and have used this book as a beginning step to identifying aquatic plants in Ohio. Although there is no perfect field book for aquatic plants, this book does a good job at balancing comprehensiveness with economy. If you are only going to get one book on aquatic plants in this region, this is the best all-around book.
What did not fully impress me were the illustrations, which were sometimes misleading (though 90% are very good), and that the key is often depends too much on one feature, which only works if that feature is fully developed and unique from species not listed in the book (not always the case). Other keys do not have this problem as much, though it is always the challenge of keys. This would also leave me wondering when I would key out by elimination based on something genereral, such as, number of stamens, for example. I then find that the picture looks nothing like what I have keyed to. Sometimes, I learn that it's just a bad picture, and other times, I learn that a different species (usually upland) not listed in the book also keys out to the same entry because the key is not specific enough and the picture is too generic to distinguish. But once you do identify the plant, this book shares more useful information about the plant than most other books.
In conjunction with Chadde, we found these books indispensible companions for our aquatic plants class:
Newcomb: Usually better pictures, easy identification (often, simply faster than the traditional keys for initial identification), perfect field size, but not phylogenically organized (important for learning families and identifying related species) or specific to wetlands (sometimes helpful for the facultative species not in Chadde, but not useful for the thousands of wetland sedges and rushes out there).
Crow and Hellquist: Incredible pictures (when present), better key, much more comprehensive (but only in dedicated wetland species--FACW-OBL, very few FAC, FACU, etc.), but too big and expensive for field work.
We also occasionally used Tiner, Peterson's, and some specific Ohio Wildflower books.
Of all the books, though, Chadde has the most wear. That tells me which one is most valuable.

Japan For Kids - best available!.......2001-10-31
OK. The book was written by an American primarily from an American point of view, and is heavily weighted towards life in Tokyo. Some basic demographics: Japan - total population about 127 million. The English speaking population in Tokyo is maybe 40,000 (if you assume that most of the West Europeans speak English on top of their mother tongues). The number of registered foreigners living in all of Japan is about 1,686,444 (as of Dec 2000) of which 2.7% are US citizens representing the fifth largest ethnic group after Koreans, Chinese, Brazilians and Philippinos. This is to give you an idea of how small the total number of English speaking foreign residents is. Naturally they are spread out very unequally all over this country with the greatest numbers concentrated in the Tokyo/Yokohama corridor and in the Osaka/Kyoto/Kobe region.
Diane writes very positively. In spite of lack in total coverage of the whole country, this book makes Japan more attractive to people who would be overwhelmed otherwise by the exotic nature of Japan, a country where very few people are capable of communicating on even the simplest level in English (unlike Singapore, Hong Kong, Sweden, Holland, India, etc.) The book is too short to address every nook and cranny of an endless topic, but it is a darn good start in the right direction and the only book of it's kind. Supplemented by the Japan Health Handbook, long term visitors have a good set of tools for tackling the job of living here with limited or no Japanese language ability. There are several chapters dealing with general information applicable to living in most urban areas of Japan. She has also included a lot of web site URLs in this second edition which make more detailed information on a local basis available. This book is not the definitive resource, nor was it meant to be at only 320 pages, but it is an excellant place to get started in the exploration of a potential lifetime experience.
For a family travelling as tourists to Japan this book is also immensely useful coupled with the Lonely Planet Guide and universally helpful hotel concierges (even when their English is sometimes lacking). Even if this book only manages to impart to the reader the "flavor" of this country, the multitude of things that appear similar on the surface but are actually quite different, then the reader has acquired that much more data with which to navigate. It may be best to see this book as a good reference book which will lead to other places for more detailed information once arrived in Japan.
Tokyo for American Kids.......2001-03-19
A more apt title for this book is perhaps "Tokyo for American Kids", because that is what it is mostly about. I am located in Yokohama, which is not far from Tokyo, so fortunately it is still useful for me, as it contains some references to Yokohama. However, if you are living in other parts of Japan, the book's usefulness is limited. The book makes many references to getting access to things that you are used to "back home", where home is America, so if you aren't American that's not much help either. Having said all that, the book has many good features if you are living in or near Tokyo, including lists of English-speaking doctors, parks/playgrounds and things to see and do, however don't rely too heavily on the directions to the attractions given in the book, as some of them are pretty ordinary. There is enough general type of information to make the book worth buying regardless of your location, if only to give you an idea of what to expect if you are moving to Japan with children, just don't be disappointed when you discover that most of the specific details provided are aimed at people living in Tokyo. If you are moving to Tokyo, this book is excellent. If you are an American moving to Tokyo, then it's even better!
This book should have been titled " Tokyo for Kids".......2000-09-28
This book should have been titled, "Tokyo for Kids". I was extremely excited to get this book but my excitement faded to disappointment when I opened it's cover to only find mostly things that realated to the Tokyo area. I am currently living in Japan with my husband and daughter and was hoping for more of an insiders view of things to do in Japan. However, I live quite a distance from the Tokyo area and had hoped to find out about things more locally, or even within a more resonable distance then Tokyo. It would have been nice to see more comprensive coverage of Japan. Not everyone who lives here, flocks to the Tokyo area. Although I do plan to visit there at least once while living here, it is not close enough to be the focus of weekend or even monthly outings. There were a few other areas mentioned, but it seemed to me that the authors of this book did not take enough time to throughly reasearch all areas of Japan. There is some useful information in here as far as contacts and ordering, but if you live anywhere outside Tokyo, I can not reccomend this book to you. It is a well written and informative book for what it is, but it should not have been titled, "Japan for Kids", nor claimed to be the ultimate guide...
Too Much Tokyo.......2000-09-28
Yes, there is a lot of great information here, and if you are in Japan with your kids I'm sure this book will be helpful. However, despite the "Japan" in the title, most of the specific places mentioned in the book (museums, hospitals, parks, etc.) are in Tokyo, followed by the Osaka-Kobe area. It can make you very envious if you don't live there!
A Lifesaver.......2000-03-07
This book never left the coffee table in the 2 years we lived in Japan. Although some of the info was outdated (phone numbers, etc.) it gave me so much information on wear to take my 3 year old to play, go to preschool, get a haircut, etc. It even gave me great advice on giving birth in Japan when I became pregnant with baby #2! It is written in a very easy way - I found myself picking it up and reading a few pages whenever I had a free moment. This book is a must for anyone heading over to Japan with kids - DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT! If you can wait until July an updated version will be published (thank you amazon.com for that information!)Since we will probably be heading there again for a few years (this time with 3 kids) I already have it on order.

well worth the money.......2002-12-13
a great book with good information my only complaint would be that it does not cover a wide variety of species.
Fabulous Illustrations &.......2000-04-18
This book is really great for the person that loves a big book with wonderful color pictures. It's one of those books you can just sit down for hours and look at all the beautiful pictures and detailed information of each tropical fish listed. There's also a detailed illustrated guide on how to set up a home aquarium and a list of common illness and treatments for sick fishes. I highly recommend this book for any aquarium enthusiast!

The Best Budget Garden book I ever bought.......2006-08-22
This book explains how to make a garden on a budget in language you can understand, you don't need to go out and buy expensive fertilizers etc, A lot of things you can get for free, if you think you want to start a nursery or greenhouse this may help you also. This book will show you how to use different containers for plants, how to create new plants from the parent plant. Explains tools etc. A really good book for us thrifty people!
Web-footed gardener.......2000-07-11
If you've ever wandered through a friend's or neighbor's garden and seen something so remarkable and yet so simple that you can't believe you didn't think of it yourself, you have some idea of what it's like to read this book. The author has done a wonderful job compiling information on everything from amending soil and fending off pests to creating garden structures from free materials. This book is a motherlode of ideas. I've been using the library's copy, but I'm going to spend a few of my well-pinched pennies on a copy of my own.

Incredible.......2006-12-07
I can't believe my eyes, this book is full of beautiful pictures, magic moments in the Blue Note studio with the jazz masters, all of them.
Not to talk about the price, what's 20 bucks for a book like this? it's worth so much more. A huge book in every aspect. I've got just one word: INCREDIBLE. Buy it.

Beautiful.......2000-01-01
Yes, there IS a calendar version of this book but the calendar just scratches the surface of this collection.
I intitially borrowed this book while looking for reference images for a video project. It became obvious to me in a very short time that I would HAVE to purchase this book. Even though I am a professional photographer and filmmaker, there are very few photography books I am willing to spend my money on. There are many I like but few I wish to own. This book, like all of the photo books I've purchased, moved me in a powerful way. These are beautifully executed, intimate black and white portraits. Most of the photographs are spontaneous and shot during recording rehearsals. Several of the images graced the covers and sleeves of the records produced by the jazz record label, Blue Note.
Francis Wolff was not just Blue Note's primary photographer (and quite talented), he was also the label's co-founder. His already skillful eye was that much more in tune (no pun intended) with his subjects and sensitive to the working environment. He was able to capture subtle moments few likely could. Most images are illuminated by a single light source, spotlighting the artists and capturing them in moments of thought, exhilaration, playfulness and intensity.
Seeing greats like Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, a young Herbie Hancock and Hank Mobley in these intimate moments early in their careers is powerful. The design is outstanding and the printing if these photographs is impressive. This is a must have book for the music lover, photographer, or photography lover. If you don't fit into one of the above catagories, don't sweat it. You will love this book simply because it is beautiful.
Isn't this a CALENDAR?.......1999-12-05
I must admit I am a little confused as to why the other reviews list this as a book.....
For lovers of jazz, jazz musicians and B&W photography.......1997-12-16
Good, insightfull text, great photographs, oustanding print quality: a must have for all lovers of jazz, jazz musicians and photography. The photographer's empathy for his subject(s) just oozes from the pages of this wonderful book. There's a picture there of a dreamy John Coltrane, that just totally catches the sensitivity, the intelligence, the emotionality of a great musician and a great human being!
A must buy !

Book Description
This book offers an interdisciplinary approach to women’s autobiographical writing in twentieth-century China. The author applies feminist insights to works by such well-known authors as Qiu Jin, Bing Xin, Ding Ling, and Wang Anyi and to works by other, lesser-known writers. Throughout, these writings are analyzed in relation to the discourses of modernity—nationalism, revolution, socialism, and market commodification—that have dominated modern China.
The book emphasizes aspects of women’s experience, especially their subjective, emotional, psychic, and bodily activities, that tend to be dismissed in mainstream discourses and orthodox studies of history and literature. The result is a new understanding of how women have negotiated their lives through autobiographical writing and struggled to carve out a place of their own in modern China. In turn, this study generates new insights into the gendered version of modern history, writing, and self.
