Insightful!.......2001-04-07
Ann Marie Sabath ever so politely documents the social and business etiquette practiced in 13 Asian and Pacific Rim countries. Chock full of practical "do's and don'ts," the book includes plenty of basic information about each country, including history, air travel, telephone, currency, holidays, language, religion, time zones and weather. To fit so much into only 200 pages, the author presents only the most important highlights and writes in a concise, authoritative, yet upbeat style. We [...] recommend this book to those doing business in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, New Zealand, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, and to those doing business elsewhere with men and women from these countries. And, just remember what Mom said, "Mind your manners wherever you go so they'll know you weren't raised in a barn."
Simple Basics, But Not As Much As You Need.......2000-07-11
I have often wished that there was an outstanding source on business etiquette in various countries, and have searched in vain for one. I was quite interested to read this one to see if it would fulfill my needs. Obviously, I could not evaluate the advice for countries where I have not done business so I checked out the countries where I had done business. The results disappointed me.
Issues that came up within the first 24 hours of trips to Asia and the Pacific Rim were not addressed in the book, such as how I should work with the companies I was planning to visit to arrange for the details of my visit. Also, many social habits that were important in meetings were not addressed, like how one should respond in various situations during business meetings (such as if the other side brings up something that is a deal breaker).
On the other hand, the book clearly provides useful advice as far as it goes, and it attempts to cover the waterfront (13 areas and 24 subjects per geography). That's probably the reason why it is too basic in approach. You will get good help here on important basics like how many hours of time difference (so you don't call at the wrong time), how dates are written down so you can decipher the messages you get, when holidays are so you won't offend someone by suggesting a meeting on an important religious or national holiday, and gift-giving etiquette (an area where Americans often err).
I do suggest that you acquire this book to have these basics available near to your computer and telephone at work. Also, the bibliography seems to provide a list of longer books on each geographic area. Those books may give you more details. There's probably no substitute for speaking with a business person from the country before you go, and getting advice from the concierge at a good hotel once you're there. Naturally, if you are fortunate enough to have colleagues in your company who work there already, they can fill you in. So this book is primarily aimed at those without a local operation.
Some of the better sections included information about what are appropriate conversational topics, rude gestures and actions to avoid, punctuality, seating etiquette, the special issues for women in business, and the weather conditions you can expect.
A book like this is a good reminder of how much we are conditioned by our culture. If nothing else, it can help you understand the sources of stalled thinking that can harm our business relationships in other countries because of our typical American approaches.
I liked what was in the book. I graded it down two stars for what was not...END
A must read book.......1999-10-30
Asia & The Pacific Rim is a must read book for those who are interested in doing business with Asian countries. Ann Marie Sabath in her book explained the Asian customs and cultures throughly but simply enough for everyone to understand and grasp. As a student from China, I believe reading this book will make your business trip to Asia more pleasant and sucessful.
Great multi-purpose tool for business & personal travel........1999-10-28
Ann Marie, I received my book a few minutes ago from Amazon.com Re: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS ETIQUETTE .. Asia & the Pacific Rim. Even though I purchased it for my official job, it will prove beneficial to me as well in my personal life as a poet/storyteller/performing artist. I have travelled abroad to Europe several times--most recently in Jan/Feb of this year to perform in 5 countries in behalf of the Armed Forces Professional Entertainment Organization, Department of Defense, the Pentagon. I may also have an opportunity to perform in Japan. This books is a useful tool for conducting business above scale and with confidence.

Customer Reviews:
Good book, not exstensive though.......2007-09-27
Good, book but short/small. If you really want to learn about Shiba's I would get something a little more extensive. But, it did the job.
Good for specifics on Shiba Care.......2007-07-22
This book was great for learning about specific care needs of the Shiba, personality traits of the Shiba, and breeding and showing your Shiba.
good start!.......2007-07-12
Concise but packed with breed-specific information. Very very helpful as I start educating myself more on this wonderful breed!
Shiba Inu.......2007-03-08
A basic book. Gives you a bottom line what the Dog is. A good help if you decide to get one and have no idea what they are like. This dog has alot of pluses. They are a great breed but not for everyone. What dog is?
A nice general overview, but that's all........2006-12-07
The Complete Pet Owner's Manual series, published by Barron, is a nice general reference for dog owners of any breed, and this book is no exception. It couples readable text with bright and attractive photographs, and it would make a good place to start researching if you are interested in owning a Shiba Inu of your own.
That said, though, do not expect this book to become your bible of Shiba Inu information. Like many books of this sort, this 'complete' manual focuses on the positives of Shiba Inus, without giving proper attention to the challenges inherent with the breed. For example, no mention is made anywhere of the breed's tendency to nip when excited even well past the puppy ages, or to do anything and everything (door-dashing, fence climbing, etc.) to escape and seek adventures beyond their yard. The book describes Shibas as a breed requiring 'moderate energy' and claims that a Shiba generally gets enough exercise playing in the house. Anyone who has owned a Shiba knows that this is not true; Shibas are easily bored when they are not exercised well, and when bored they will dig, chew, and otherwise destroy their environment.
All told, it's an okay book. It offers practical (if basic) advice on choosing a puppy, housetraining, introducing a Shiba to other pets and children. An overview of the breed history and standard is included, but most of what is found here could also be found in any book about any dog breed. The only leg up it has on other breed-specific books is that the pictures are very attractive and plentiful.
Book Description
The Shiba Inu, one of the oldest native dogs of Japan, has grown in status as a popular show and companion dog. This top-quality book details the temperament of the Shiba and gives invaluable advice on training and socialization. The Breed Standard is discussed and there is a special section on showing and judging the breed.

Hard to find, but worth the search.......2005-03-23
I have not one Shiba Inu, but two. If you don't have a Shiba that sounds like no feat. However, if you do have a Shiba you may know that there is a certain level of challenge in owning a Shiba. This book was incredibly helpful. It had great pictures, information and resources for further information. You can tell it was written by a person who really knows Shibas. I wish I would have had this book a year ago, my life would have been much simpler. For anyone who has been captivated by those little almond eyes and going to buy a Shiba in the near future, buy this book. It's hard to track down, but easy to find than a canine behaviorist who is fluent in Japanese culture.
Great intro to shibas........2003-08-19
One of two excellent books on shibas, the other being Gretchen Haskett's The Total Shiba. The Complete Shiba has lots of color photos (Haskett's is all B&W), and is good enough to be your only shiba book. The only reason to buy Haskett's instead of Atkinson's would be to get the great list of Japanese name suggestions. The publisher is no longer Macmillan - it's Howell Book House (Wiley), )

Good Book on A "Rare" Breed.......2001-09-30
This book gives good information. Maybe a little heavy on the showing/breeding and a little light on the housepet stuff but that is fine. It is funny how it talks about the dog throwing up the first car ride home (mine did!) and its overall temperament. It was 100% accurate! Definitely buy if you are looking at buying or have bought a Shiba.
Great Book for the Shiba Owner.......1999-11-25
I really enjoyed this book. I breed Shibas here in America and even though this book was written by a UK breeder, it is wonderful. If you are considering getting a Shiba, you really need this book. It has a lot of great information on grooming and training a Shiba. I have all my future puppy owners get this Shiba book over all others. It is really geared for your typical pet Shiba owner, but breeders would also find it useful, especially in pedigree research of British Shibas.
Very informative.......1999-10-06
If you're researching the breed, this is your book. Very detailed background behind the Shiba, temperment, what to expect, breed standards, health, you name it, it's in there. Good resource book.

Quick Review.......2006-07-24
This is one of the better books I have read up to date. If you have a basic foundation of music production knowledge it will be extremely helpful - if you dont it will still be helpful. Great Book!!
Excellent for the intermediate/advanced producer.......2006-02-28
This book cuts right to the heart of techniques that you can build off of to form your own tricks and styles. It really helps to reveal the added capabilities you can get out of your existing sequencer and FX along with inspiring some discovery.
great introduction to remixing.......2006-02-28
Great buy if you're looking specifically at remixing. The book does not dive into specific programming techniques for synthesizers at a detail enough to become a professional, but it is short enough that it became a quick reference for me on certain techniques. Very good read for the aspiring producer.
A Must have..........2005-12-27
With all books from Berklee Press the beginner and the advanced alike will learn something new. And this book is no exception. Remixing is very hot these days and everyone wants a piece of the pie. But there are only a select few who can pull off remixes that move people. With this book an aspiring DJ can get a few steps closer. Not olny does it start with the basics such as what gear you will need, it walks you through the different aspects of remixing. For the beginner, knowing what makes the genres of dance music different helps you to focus on the type of remix you want for a song. For the seasoned Remix artist it will give you the basis to expand your horizons into different types of dance music. The CD that comes with it is a great tool to actually hear the technique the author explains in step by step instructions.
Remixing is an art, but you gotta start somewhere. While there is no subtitution for actual practice, you can't go wrong with this book.
Appropriately Titled........2005-09-20
This book truly covers every aspect of remixing, from finding songs to remix, to getting a bar code for your CD, and author Erik Hawkins does an admirable job of touching on every relevant topic in between.
As can be expected the sections of the book that refer to specific computer hardware and software are already not completely current but thankfully the real treasure in this book is found in the sections dealing with production, and this will certainly be valid for many years to come. There's excellent advice given about targeting a style and setting up your sequencer to begin remixing including essential facts about time-stretching and time-correcting remix elements. The chapter on working with lead vocals and micro-editing is particularly eye-opening and useful far beyond the context of remixing.
Perhaps the coolest thing about this guide is the included CD which allows you to hear the production techniques being described. For example, no matter how well a "stutter edit" is described in words, nothing compares to actually hearing it for yourself, and this is as simple as cueing up the CD to the track boldly listed at the beginning of the corresponding section. A number of advanced production devices are presented this way along with a step by step description of how the effect was achieved, these alone are worth the price of the book. Additional production tips are contributed by remixing heavyweights BT, Dave Audé, Thunderpuss, and Deepsky.
The references to chords and chord progressions are overly simplified and contain at least one glaring error but this isn't really the focus of the book and this information can easily be found in other resources. As a guide to remixing and electronic music production in general, this book is a solid hit.
Book Description
For the first time, a complete version of the autobiography of Xie Bingying (1906-2000) provides a fascinating portrayal of a woman fighting to free herself from the constraints of ancient Chinese tradition amid the dramatic changes that shook China during the 1920s, '30s, and '40s.
Xie's attempts to become educated, her struggles to escape from an arranged marriage, and her success in tricking her way into military school reveal her persevering and unconventional character and hint at the prominence she was later to attain as an important figure in China's political culture. Though she was tortured and imprisoned, she remained committed to her convictions. Her personal struggle to define herself within the larger context of political change in China early in the last century is a poignant testament of determination and a striking story of one woman's journey from Old China into the new world.
Customer Reviews:
Important, but not necessarily good...........2007-04-08
Xie Bingying was many things. Unfortunately, her autobiography does not convey this well, reading like a nationalist propaganda piece. She also did not write much about the political context of the times in which she lived, although I suspect that was deliberate. Her story is still fascinating, however, because of how she navigated the shifting social intersections of China in the turmoil of the early twentieth century. To understand what women went through during this period, this is a valuable resource. I wouldn't recommend it for casual reading though.
this is an overrated work........2005-12-08
I have just read this book for a Chinese Women's history class, and I have found that it is nothing more than a hagiography that oversimplifies many complicated facets of Chinese culture. These days, it seems to be the vogue in literature to publish books by Asian women portraying them as hobbling, footbound victims of patriarchy and oppression. While it is true that Asian culture is definitely patriarchal and something that needs to be reformed, this book is another hackneyed account of a young woman trying to escape "feudal" social structures.
I have no love for this book or any book like it because its message has been written and rewritten in various books by authors such as Amy Tan and Maxine Hong Kingston. The translators say in the introduction that Xie is the symbol of transition from "old" to "new" China. By not clearly defining what these interpretations are, they leave it to their audience to define what "old" and "new" are based on individual interpretaion. Moreover, Xie Bingying's black-and-white, old-and-new, feudal-and progressive viewpoint oversimplifies many complexities that face women in confronting modern gender ideals. If you have read Amy Tan or any other hackneyed works, I recommend skipping this book because it is another example of the oversimplification of cultural identity today.
A Chinese modern classic.......2003-03-13
Few people in the West realize how extraordinary this book is and how much it has influenced generations of young Chinese. I used to own the original (Chinese) version of this book while growing up as a boy in South America in the 60s. I used to read it for guidance and strength in the darkest days of my youth. I must have read and reread it a dozen times before I had to reluctantly part ways with it. This is a true modern classic that is often ignored by contemporary historians of Chinese literature, who prefer the shallowness of the likes of Sanmo. The War Diaries, which were praised by none other than Lin Yutang, are also worth reading; the translators should make them the subject of their next project.
Fine as the edition is, I wish the cover had been different. I have never seen a likeness of Xie xiansheng before and almost overlook the book because I was misled by the photograph of the woman in uniform to think it was a book about the Cultural Revolution. But I am glad the editors have included the photographs contained in the insert. I have always matched the feistiness of the woman soldier with a rather robust physique: I am surprised how fragile and delicate Xie xiansheng actually was.
This book is correctly listed as an autobiography but it reads like a fine novel, with memorable scenes and episodes. Without opening this translation and reading a single line, I can name a half dozen right off the top of my head: the foot-binding, the escapes, the dying brother, the impoverished former army girlfriend, the love triangle, etc. This book is to the Chinese literature what the Ann Frank diaries are to the European; it definitely should not be missed.
a woman's revolution.......2002-02-07
It is a great book! this book portrayed how women were mistreated in the early 20th century in China. In that old days, girls were not allowed to be educated. They only learned how to spin cotton and embroider,, how to be an obedient daughter, and later a dutiful daughter-in-law. The reading materials for them were highly restricted to certain books such as Teach Your Daughter Traditional Rules. The worst thing was that girls had bound feet! However, there were still a few "lucky one" be able to escape from these old customs. Of course, it wasn't easy. This autobiography described an extraordinary woman, Xie Bingying who struggled to free herself from the traaditional Chinese society--received education, freed from an arranged marriage, became a soldier in the National Revolutionary Army, etc. Her experience was extraordinary!! I like this book because it is not only a truth story, it also pertains very rich information about the old Chinese customs.
