Down-to-earth, practical advice on gardening.......1998-07-22

Although this book is titled "Rock Gardening", it has great appeal to all gardeners. It includes introductory information on how to create rock, bog and woodland gardens, how to propagate plants, maintenance, etc. But the best part is the comprehensive plant descriptions, with practical advice on their cultural requirements, difficulty and propagation. Although there are no color pictures, I find this is the book I rely upon most for accurate information on lesser known rock garden and woodland plants.

Though data kinds of out-of-date.......2007-02-18

You must have for its massive information and detail map which inculding every need of buddhism pilgrims (It's kind of rare on popular market), but for the traveling data quite out of date, especially for Tibet's situation. (I am not sure for rest of India, Nepal and Bhutan.... cause I didn't use this book as other areas.)

The once-great Tibetan world, though based on common culture and language, has splintered over the centuries into slabs attached to China, India and Nepal--with Bhutan the sole independent nation remaining. This book reassembles the complex jigsaw into a cohesive whole again, making it the perfect guidebook for travellers keen on visiting overlapping regions of the Tibetan plateau on a single trip.

Informative but limited for climbing, biking..........2002-06-13

If one is not interested in purely religious destinations, another book might be in order.
This book is concerned only with religious destinations in Tibet.
Mountain climbers, trekkers, or bikers concerned perhaps with more terrestrial matters would be better served by a book with mile markers, better maps, and more information on lodging.

I was in Tibet in March of 2002 climbing Mt. Nojin Kansa. I had this book; another guy had a book I won't bother to name. I constantly referred to the other book for mile markers, pass altitudes, international phone providers, etc.

This book will get thee to a nunnery in short order. It will not provide the best maps or travel details.

So good I bought it twice!.......2001-11-26

At first glance, I thought this guide would be difficult to use as I was so used to the layout of Lonely Planet. However, I quickly adapted to it and found it very informative and reasonably up to date. Most useful was the section on Buddhism when visiting the extraordinary temples in Tibet, as well as advice on routes to take and how to get places. Unfortunately, after a vehicle accident just outside of Lhasa, my book went missing somewhere between the side of the road and the hospital bed (don't let that put you off visiting this remarkable country!). So I was overjoyed when I discovered the guide again in Kathmandu, and bought another copy so I could continue to use it!

Easter Island is one of the most interesting places in the world, but you would never know it from this text that is so much like geography textbooks of old that you don't want to even turn the page. What does keep you turning the pages are the pictures which are quite beautiful and, in themselves, illuminating... A worthy effort, with solid information...

An excellent informational book about Easter Island and its mysterious past. Schort chapters break the book into easily managable sections. The vocabulary is appropriate for the intended age group. Factual information is clearly separated from theories. When applicable, multiple theories are presented. Crisp, clear photographs throughout the book serve to clarify the narration. A glossary, complete with pronounciation guide, is included along with an index.

An Interesting and Reliable Guide.......2004-10-05

It may be out of date, I don't know. When it comes to important matters, everyone should consult with a trusted veterinarian. But for emergency care, interest, and a general guide, I've raised four cats on this book. Everything, from warnings on what and what not to feed your cat and what plants you can and cannot have in the house to when to call your vet, is covered, well, and easy to find. The book could use a more extensive index, but it was a very convenient and affordable helpmate for an anxious mother.

Tuxedo was four weeks old when we brought him home, which we didn't know, because he was a barn cat, and nobody really knew how old they were. Twenty-four hours after we got him settled in, we discovered that baby had no teeth. So, there we were, desperately going through the library and the pet store, frantic to figure out why baby didn't use the bathroom, didn't eat, and was losing weight at an alarming rate.

Some books were more helpful, but we were poor, and some just didn't cover enough, and some covered TOO much. I got lost in extemperanious information, and couldn't find what I needed. This one was "just right." ;-) It gave me just enough to quiet my new mother fears, and help me answer all of my questions, without losing me in technical terms, and kept me from calling the vet every ten minutes.

Tuxedo is now 16 solid pounds, healthy as an ox, and well trained. He has welcomed three women into his family, and they've all been at different stages of health, and different ages, but this book has helped us get through them all. I keep it handy, and still, after four years, turn to it about once a month when I'm in over my head.

Old Info Out of Date.......2002-02-23

In 1996 when this book first appeared it offered current information and was one of the first to address "training" in cats and to promote early-age neutering. It is written in an engaging style and remains a good basic reference for first-time kitten owners. But in the seven years since publication, much has changed in the world of feline health care, such as vaccination recommendations, and the understanding of behavior and feline diseases. DO NOT rely on this book for health care advice.

Shojai's latest book, "COMPLETE KITTEN CARE" is a much better choice. This is the author's 18th pet care title and it has up-to-date medical information and advice based on Shojai's interviews with hundreds of veterinary experts. The training and behavior material comes from Shojai's hands-on personal experience with shelter cats and kittens, as well as insights from professional breeders.

I have had several cats and kittens over my 50+ years and this was very helpful, with reasons why cats do the sometimes dreadful things they do, and ways to stop some of the behaviors.

A book with good advice and some intriguing anecdotes........1999-09-11

Despite the rather unwieldy title, this is a good book for the novice cat owner or even the experienced owner who wants to learn more. It seems oddly organized and structured at times, however. Sometimes it's a practical training handbook, at others a feline medical guide. It even ventures into autobiographical territory when it presents anecdotes of the author's veterinary experiences. Overall it's pretty informative, relaying neat facts about cat neurology, behavior, and growth and development. I recommend it.

For the serious gardener.......2003-07-09

This is a book for the knowledgeable gardener who loves to make the link between flowers native to exotic places and the home garden, and for the plantsman who will take immense trouble to grow specific plants.

In my experience it is an unique book because it combines the adventure and awe of the plant hunter in the Himalaya with practical advice about how to grow the plants that were discovered. The colour photographs of the Himalaya are impressive and help the reader to understand the natural environment of the plants described later.

The book has seven chapters. The first helps the reader understand the ecological divisions of the Himalaya and the different plant habitats. The second chapter takes a brief look at some of the plant hunters who ventured into the area and brought back new species to challenge our gardening skills. The next three chapters detail how to develop gardens to grow plants from the three main climate zones - temperate, subalpine and alpine. The final chapters cover propagation and pests and diseases. There is a list of sources for seeds and plants in both Europe and North America, a glossary, bibliography and index of plant names.

This book really added to my knowledge of plants. I'd never given much thought to the huge variety of plants from the Himalaya. If asked, I'd say primulas, rhododendrons and the blue poppy, Meconopsis. I had never realized how many species of Meconopsis there are. For a start you can find deep blue ones (M. x sheldonii), yellow ones (M. integrifolia)....
The primula species are even more numerous and some of the orchids take your breath away. The flower photography in this book is exceptional.

This is not a book for everyone, but it will be a joy to the serious plantsman. The author writes clearly and knowledgeably and his depth of experience and love for his topic come across to the reader.

A REMARKABLE STORY -.......2002-12-06

Imagine the thrill I felt when, by accident, I came across Tom Linde's book at amazon.com. I knew Tom when he was in high school and have always wanted to know what happened to him. The reader will find this a story of what a noble man has brought to life. He turned a damaged beginning into a well used life, a life that signifies something: a marvelous story of love, inspiration, courage, and intellect.

Becoming Reacquainted.......2002-02-23

I've known Tom since 1973. The book adds a dimension to our relationship that was missing up to the present. His ability to successfully cope with the devastating "horror" of his circumstance is remarkable. His descriptive articulation of this "horror" is what is very new to me and substantially deepens my value of, respect for, and love of this remarkable man. Tom's debits as a human being are similar to many of us and are neither diminished or aggrandized by his unique circumstance. He is truly human, ornery, cunning, at times devious, and genuine.

Inspirational..................2002-01-15

I would have to take issue with Dr. Linde's son who says his dad "is an average person, he just works harder at it". He is an extraordinary person who daily faces monumental challenges to live an ordinary life. He demonstrates an iron will and incredible determination in the face of overwhelming obstacles and maintains a beautiful sense of humor throughout.

Dr. Linde possesses a brilliant mind, trapped in a seriously disabled body. He has indeed "worked vigorously to establish a discernible, productive social presence" his entire life, often against great odds. I feel such anger when I read about the lack of accessibility which is afforded him in his own community.

This book answers lots of questions about coping with a serious handicap and is an inspirational journal of Dr. Linde`s life. Praises to his parents and his brother, Dick, who taught him from the beginning that no hurdle was too high and no obstacle to large for him to overcome.

This book possesses humor, culture, education, inspiration - appealing to a broad variety of readers. I highly recommend it!

Great book!.......2002-01-15

I'm lucky enough to know Dr. Linde personally, and he is an amazing person. It was interesting to get to read his book and see life through Tom's eyes; to try and understand what it feels like to suffer from such a horrible disease. Tom has overcome his setbacks and propelled farther than many thought he would ever be able to go. Now, through this book, he can teach all of us.
Read this book. Not only is it a well-written book, but it's important for all "normal" people to try to understand what it may be like to be handicapped. Tom's book does that. It can open your heart and mind.

I highly recommend this book by Dr. Linde. It gives the reader a very clear understanding of what it is like to live with cerebral palsy. But more than that, this book is applicable to readers in all situations who have personal misfortune to deal with. The courage, humor, and personal strength shown by the author are an inspiration to all readers, regardless of whether they are dealing with personal infirmities. This book is a must read for special education majors, and could be helpful in occupational therapy training as well. Also a good personal interest book for the general population.

This revision of my memoir addresses the concerns and mindsets involved in dealing with personal misfortune. In my case, the overriding misfortune is a severe form of Cerebral Palsy. It affects my speech, coordination, and locomotion. The very essence of the book is that these impairments, misfortunes though they may be, do not define me. They do not define who I am, what I believe or what I strive to offer. This book is about more than me. It is about my mom and dad and my immediate family. By their genetic and spiritual energy they gifted me with all that made them special and loving. They gifted me with the knowledge that just to exist on a day to day basis is a misrepresentation of what we must do as members of our family, citizens of our community, and our world. Thus, I learned early on that my disability was always to be controlled and never to be used as an excuse for not being an active player on the world's stage. Does the world have many stages? Certainly. With severe Cerebral Palsy I had to learn how to play my part no matter what the setting on the stage. I worked long and hard to make this book a well-focused account of what I have done and how I have done it. I want it to be an inspiration, a guide, on how to deal with some really awful stuff. I want the reader to discover happily that with a lot of hard work and a little wiggle room most misfortune can be put in its proper place. This is a happy book. I worked to fill it with all the joy of life that my family poured into my soul. In the end I want the reader to discover that, indeed, I am not what I am.

Helpful in understanding modern Chinese intellectual history.......2001-11-23

The author of this book, Su Xiaokang, was a principle author of a six-part TV series in China in late 1980s, River Elegy, which "galvanized" the country due to its sweeping "indictment" of Chinese beliefs and values. The TV series won endorsement of then Communist Party Secretary, Zhao Ziyang. The ensuing intellectual debate was covered by prominent Chinese news media at that time.

The author had been living in Princeton after 1991, among a small circle of exiled Chinese "elites" (some of whom had been nominated for the Nobel Prize for Peace or Literature). The author's observations of the lives of these exiles, who could barely speak English, are candid, succinct and insightful.

The book is best in its chronicle of the exiles' lives, especially the tragedy of his own family, which is touching and personal. However, the author's reflections on life in China and America often suffer from sweeping generalizations (like his earlier TV series in China) with dubious connection to realities. Some of his observations on events outside of his immediate environment are factually wrong. For example, in discussing Chinese on the Net, Su mentioned (page 272): "During the bloodthirsty spring of Beijing 1989, several students in the California area who had never personally met managed to launch a Chinese news website." In fact, the Chinese News Digest (CND) was not founded by "several students from California"; websites (as we know today) did not come into existence until the 1990s.

For people who would want to explore modern Chinese intellectual history, this book might be helpful. But it is hard to use due to absence of an index, and the book's disorganized narrative style.

Misfortune wears a human face.......2001-08-16

This book I found shortly before undergoing an operation and during a year of suffering many severe health difficulties. I was so struck by the way the author relates his wife's tragic accident, his feelings for his wife and I suppose was most involved with the testimonial he makes concerning his involvement in the circumstances leading to her accident. I wish my husband would read this memoir, it is so tender. I think the author is searingly honest in his account of these years. The text is healing, we learn from tragedy. It causes me to relate to how I am finding my previous life struggles to be reordered against the background of the loss of health. He yearns to live back in the ordinary that was his life before his wife was so hurt, to have known it for the gift it was. This book is a quiet call to the living. I hope it will be read and appreciated for the beautiful book it is.

the beauty of thought and self question.......2001-05-07

Ok, I must be honest, Zhu Hong (translator) was my Professor for my Chinese Womens Literature class and I might not have read this book otherwise. That being said, as individual and beautiful as the human mind, Memoir of Misfortune truly is a work of art. The book is written as an interior monologue by Su XiaoKang as he attempts to deal with the traumatic aftermath of a car accident in New York state. Blaming himself for the accident and the pain and suffering he has caused his wife, Xiao Kang expands the scope of his questioning to his involvement in the events leading up to Tiananmen Square and his whole life in general. This book is a testament to one mans spirit that struggles to move on from one hardship to another.
