5 out of 5 stars Like no place on earth.......1999-02-04

I spent a week hiking the interior and scootering the perimeter of Yakushima & had the pleasure of meeting Hiroaki Yamashita. His photographs capture the spooky, spiritual, perfect beauty of this place that even the rapacious Japanese developers haven't screwed up too badly. It's so mountainous that even though it's only 32 miles or so around, there are parts of the island that have never been explored. If you get a chance, go, it's beautiful & unforgettable. If you can't go, get this book.

Book Description

Updated with 30 percent new material, this second edition of Best Places Southern California continues to offer the in-depth recommendations that sophisticated travelers have come to expect from the Best Places series. For tourists looking to discover why California is the second-highest-rated destination after Florida (Travel Industry Association of America), this guidebook provides the distinctive taste, insider sensibility, and honest advice of a native Angeleno and her top-notch team of writers. It's also the ultimate locals guide, useful for the millions of Californians turning to closer-to-home travel. Best Places Southern California uncovers the region's finest and most interesting places to go, see, eat, and stay -- whether it's a must-be-tried bistro in Los Angeles, San Diego's Balboa Park, an intimate inn overlooking the Pacific, or a luxurious desert resort. It covers urban adventures in L.A. and San Diego, the beaches of the Orange County Coast, wineries of the Central Coast, mountain and desert regions, the Sierra Nevada National Parks, and Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm. Three-Day Tour sections will appeal to the many Americans who are now choosing weekend getaways over longer vacations. Brand-new material includes an improved and reorganized chapter on Los Angeles and expanded coverage of Disneyland.

The publication date is 2003 and many of the rated restaurants in locations with which I am familiar are no longer operational. The book needs an update. The purchaser cannot rely on the listings without checking independently. The attractions listed in the book are excellent choices for the regions, so the book retains some usefulness.

3 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Guide.......2001-03-13

Overall, a well-organized introduction to the high points (and high life) of Southern CA. Excellent "mini-tour" suggestions, complete with stop-by-stop itineraries. Could use a bit of polish on specifics, like festival dates and contact info, but otherwise, a great planning resource. Focus is primarily on upscale establishments, hotels and eateries, definitely not for those who are looking to do "California on $25 a day"....

5 out of 5 stars Calling all scientists!.......2006-03-03

Whose Spots Are These? by Sarah C. Wohlrabe, illustrated by Derrick Alderman and Denise Shea, is a delightful science related book that primary children will love. The book is a guessing game for kids using animal markings. The little ones guess what animal the part of the picture belongs to and the follow up page shows the entire picture of the animal. For example, the first puzzle has the familiar black and white markings of a Holstein cow. On the follow-up page which reveals the answer, there is also a fun fact about the animal. At the end of the book, there is a Just for Fun quiz about the facts presented in the book, science vocabulary words, suggestions of books that you may check out and read from a library, and a science website to search on the Internet. This is a fun and educational book that children will enjoy reading.
          RELATED ACTIVITIES
Go to the public library and see what research materials you may find about the animals that were hidden in the pages of the book.
Make your own hidden spot book of animal pictures and see if your friends can guess what the hidden animals are.
Write a story about any of the animals you saw in the book using one of the fun facts about the animal.
Go to the public library and see if you can find the footprint that matches each animal. Make a foot book to go with your spot book.

1 out of 5 stars Thoughts on this book.......2000-04-19

Somewhat disappointed, not a guide for the collector. Covers very little in terms of particular Swatches. Only lists a handful of Swatches from each category, not the exhaustive list the tittle leads you to believe. On the other hand, if you are obsessed with the most interesting watch ever produced, then you should have this book. Just don't expect to use it for looking up unknown Swatches. If anyone knows of a good book that lists all Swatches made please let me know mark.duncan@mindspring.com .

3 out of 5 stars Colorful just like the company.......1999-04-18

I enjoyed this book. It's pictures were very nice and of course colorful. Had a good introduction to the history of Swatch watches and also informitive for the beginner collector. Nice book overall.

            5 out of 5 stars Good Overview.......2004-02-24

This is a good overview of watch history and availability. Highlighted are 55 of the major collectible watch companies with good photo selections from each. The detailed pages on the companies is good and informative. Not bad for the coffee table, either.

1 out of 5 stars Pretty pictures- Scant value.......2000-11-10

This is an OK gift book with nice photos of watches, but it fails as a "connoisseurs" guide. There is scant history of the various brands and almost no technical information. No connoisseur would seriously consider a Timex watch, but Timex is presented along with the finest Breitlings, Bulgaris, Breguets et al. In the section on Bulgari, the author describes in detail a watch given by Count Galazzo (sic) Ciano to a friend, but there is no illustration to go along with the description.

A watch collector or connoisseur should not waste his or her time with this lightweight giftbook

3 out of 5 stars Nice but shortý.......2000-06-23

Nothing much to learn from this well illustrated book, at least nothing more than what can be found in "wriswatch annual". For newbies only.

4 out of 5 stars Concise interesting overview of actual wristwatches producer.......1999-08-30

Accurate and concise history of time keeping, with a brief history of the technical evolution as well as a generical presentation of the main 50 makers and their actual products. Good photos.

3 out of 5 stars For coffee tables, not collectors.......1999-01-27

Great pictures but short on content. The layout is first-rate, and the author was able to shoot some historic timepieces, but the company index reads more like a well-worded ad than an explanation of what makes good watches great. Also leaves out mention of some interesting or odd collectibles. Could also use some diagrams of working watches. Otherwise, it's too technical. A beautiful book, nonetheless. One which will get picked up by non-collectors as well.

The genus Salvia includes more than 700 species and hundreds of garden-worthy cultivars; given their extreme diversity of color and habit, salvias may truly be the ultimate collector's plant. Our publication of Betsy Clebsch's A Book of Salvias in 1997 prompted even greater interest in many handsome and newly available plants; Sutton's new book documenting more than 90 species provides a useful perspective from England and Europe.

I picked this book because of my love of Shakespeare. I was pleasantly surprised at how the author is able to relate the wordsmithing of Shakespeare to modern business communications. He presents each topic in a thoughtful, enjoyable to read manner.

I continue to refer to this book in my work. I have recommended it to several of my staff and co-workers. I think its a valuable addition to any business communication library.

Tom Leech's book, "Say It Like Shakespeare" is an absolute gem - and definitely a keeper. In the short time in which I've owned the book, I have used it in lectures, classes, and even social occasions. Surely Shakespeare himself must be delighted to know his words ring true for so many instances in this 21st century. This wonderful book shall have a place of honor among the reference books I use most often. However, this is the only one that continually amuses, confounds, and inspires. I certainly hope that Mr. Leech will soon be publishing more.

2 out of 5 stars So much for Shakespeare.......2003-07-29

I read this book with much anticipation, excited to see how the author was going to link Shakespeare's works with communication skills. I must say that I was sorely disappointed.

As an active Toastmaster of 3 years and an avid reader of various communication books, I feel there is nothing new worth learning from this book.

                      1. Most points are obviously emulating the Toastmasters basic project manual or basically any other ordinary communications book that you can pick off a shelf in any bookstore. Points brought up mention stuff like speech organisation, sincerity, body language and vocal variety. That is fine if these points had been elaborated in more detail rather than sweepingly carried across. This makes the book feel more like a teaser on various communication techniques - just a teaser - meaning no real content, just words to trigger your interest (that is, if you are a complete novice AND not a Toastmaster).

                      2. I was wondering how the book would link its contents to Shakespeare. What happened was that the author simply peppered LOTS of quotes from various Shakespearean works throughout every page, and I mean a LOT. What makes it more disappointing is that the meaning behind the quotes are never really explored in detail as to how it could possibly give us some lessons in communicating well. In that retrospect, this book violates the very essence of good communication skills - Purposeful Actions. The author did the action of putting lots of quotes in, just so that this book could be hyped as the "Say it like Shakespeare" book. Unfortunately, since these quotes were not properly weaved into the content, nor were proper lessons that readers could learn from these quotes identified or highlighted adequately, these quotes tend to stuck out like a sore thumb in the book AND became part of UNPURPOSEFUL content.

                      3. As mentioned earlier, the content being more of a teaser, just informs but doesn't help you in any way of application. Plus you tend to question its credibility cos of its vagueness in explanation and its content being the sort of content that you can even pick off freely from any Internet site.

                      My conclusions are:
                      1. If you are a complete beginner and just want to KNOW (but not understand nor apply) what is supposed to be touted as common good communication practices, read this book.

                      2. If you have some experience in public speaking, and/or have read many communication mantras already, give this book a miss - you will find that you can reap nothing new in terms of knowledge for this.

                      3. If you are a strategist interested in seeing how Shakespeare can be a useful tool in teaching you good communication skills - just like how some people are interested in how Sun Tzu's military strategies can be applied to business - forget this book. You'll only be greeted with numerous quotes of Shakespeare WITHOUT explanations or links.

                      Book Description

In Speaking Shakespeare, Patsy Rodenburg tackles one of the most difficult acting jobs: speaking Shakespeare's words both as they were meant to be spoken and in an understandable and dramatic way. Patsy calls this 'a simple manual to start the journey into the heart of Shakespeare.' With the same insight she displayed in The Actor Speaks, Patsy tackles the playing of all Shakespeare's char-acters. She uses dramatic resonance, breathing, and place- ment to show how an actor can bring Hamlet, Rosalind, Puck and the others to life. This is one book every working actor must have.

Oddly enough, words seem completely inadequate to describe Patsy and her teaching. She is an absolute hero and beyond extraordinary...there is no one who understands the human being and voice better than she. If you don't have the opportunity to be in her presence, and learn from her in person (an undeniably mind-blowing experience), then her books are definitely next best thing. Her writing is always incredibly concise and powerful, but this one is particularly full of wonderful examples and imagery. Her structure and method is so clearly laid out, and her passion is so present in her writing (no matter the book) that it is almost as if you were in the room with her. This book would be an invaluable addition to any library, as would any or all of her other works. Patsy Rodenburg is quite simply one-of-a-kind awesome!

I had to use this text as part of a class at VCU called Speaking Shakepeare. It is wise to realize that this text, since it is voice and movement related necessitates that one must use the material outside just reading it. Reading Rodenburg can be repetitive at times. However, her approach and detailed examples accentuates the translating of the foreign language of Shakespeare into a palpable and manipulative text. This practical approach takes the hindering and fright out of the playwright's words. I have had great success, thanks to using this book as an aide in tackling Shakespeare. A worth while investment. Just make sure that you apply it step by step, not all at once.

5 out of 5 stars Telling It Like It Is.......2002-12-08

I'm not sure why I purchased this book in the first place--something told me I wouldn't understand Shakespeare simply by reading it unless I really learned to speak it.

It's blown my world wide open. This is an astonishing book--which even if it apparently looks like a workbook for actors, is more importantly a guide for anyone who'd like to know what planet she's landed on. Because you can't know much about planet earth if you don't know much about Shakespeare--and the secrets Shakespeare is willing to share with you aren't available unless you can hear his lines, and you can't hear them if you can't speak them.

Understand, I've been reading Shakespeare for 40 years. this book has doubled the pleasure and depth of the experience for me.

                      Book Description

One of the best ways for modern readers to develop an appreciation for Shakespeare is by discovering how frequently his works are reinvented by todays young adult authors. Heirs to Shakespeare puts the Bard into conversation with these authors and helps bring Renaissance drama to life. This innovative approach to curriculum design bridges the artificial gap between canonical authors and contemporary writers. At the same time, it demonstrates how reading for personal pleasure and reading Shakespeare can be complementary goals.

Unlike other books that "pair" classic and contemporary books, this one provides readings and specific analysis of the Shakespearean influence underpinning many young adult novels. Important features include:

Readers will discover the inescapable intertextual connections between many modern young adult novels and Shakespeares plays. They will gain a practical and concrete understanding of how modern authors talk about and respond to classic literature through the processes of revision and reinterpretation. Most of all, they will see why the works of Shakespeare are as relevant today as ever and why young adult novels can be as "significant" as Shakespeare.

In this interesting and informative book, Isaac explores how today's YA literature is influenced by the classic stories found in Shakespeare's plays. Citing the fact that many of the plays have teenage characters and that they feature universal themes of love, sex, death, humor, and families, Isaac compares several plays side-by-side to modern novels written for teens. Hamlet, for example, is paralleled to Katherine Patterson's Bridge to Terabitha and to Lois Duncan's Killing Mr. Griffin. Such parallels are not always obvious at first, but Isaac presents a carefully thought out and well-written comparison for her selections. The book also takes a brief look at young adult life in that time period, and discusses several YA novels that are set in the Elizabethan era. Intended for English Literature teachers, this book will make entertaining reading for anyone with an interest in Shakespeare or just a love for modern YA fiction. I was familiar with the plays discussed but not with all of the corresponding novels, and I found Isaac's summaries and comparisons remarkably informative and understandable. This is a very interesting look at the common, timeless themes in literature, and Isaac does a marvelous job of presenting and explaining her choices for comparison. Highly recommended, essential for librarians working in schools where Shakespeare is a strong focus in English classes.

                                  Book Description

When we listen to the words of a poet in the theater, or read them silently on the page, what is it that we hear? How do such crafty writers as Shakespeare or Donne, Wyatt or Yeats, Wordsworth or Lowell arrange their rhythms to make their poetry more expressive? A gathering of perceptive essays written over twenty-five years, this book by a distinguished scholar and poet helps us hear the measures poets use to conjure up strangeness, urgency, distance, surprise, the immediacy of speech, or the sounding of silence.
