The Professional's must have.......2000-03-25
This book and its companion, the Monocotyledons, are THE required books for all professionals who need a reference to identify wetland plants in the southeast. It is not a book for the hobby naturalist unless they are prepared for the technical terms and presentation. It is not a "field guide" but an office reference for indentifying plants collected in the field. It is worth the price if you identify plants for a living. Buy the Monocotyledons as well.

Customer Reviews:
THE best general travel guides.......2007-05-13
National Geographic started this series of travel guides a few years back, and, after 16 years of leading student tours to Europe and trying other popular travel publications, I can highly recommend the NG series. The maps are some of the best in this category and I especillay appreciate the way the authors/editors divide cities and countries into easily digestible and fun to use sections. Another plus are the suggested walking tours. If you're heading across the pond, these are the travel guides to invest in.

Rather simplistic telling of the life of a fascinating woman.......2000-01-05
Emma Edmonds ran away from home to escape her father and an arranged marriage. She eventually settled in Flint, Michigan, where she pretended to be a man, using the name of Frank Thompson, both to protect herself and to enable herself to make a decent living (she sold Bibles door-to-door). When the Civil War broke out, Emma signed up for the Union. Besides being an army nurse, she fought in several battles, went AWOL when she had malaria, to prevent her sex from being discovered, nursed herself back to health, and rejoined the war. Grant sent her on 8 spying missions in Confederate country, all of which she carried out efficiently, disguising herself one mission as a young black man; she was promptly enslaved and forced to dig trenches for the Confederates--ideal, for she had been trying to find out what were the exact locations of the enemy's trenches. The book is full of such stories; there's never a dull page, thanks to Emma's colorful and courageous life. Stevens writes for the young market; I think her writing errs on the side of being too unsophisticated, but that's a fault that can be overlooked when dealing with such splendid material.

An invaluable index and cross-linked reference Steuben collectors will find essential........2007-01-04
Marshall Ketchum's revised, expanded second edition of FREDERICK CARDER'S STEUBEN GLASS: GUIDE TO SHAKES, NUMBERS, COLORS, FINISHES, AND VALUES is a 'must' for any collector, offering a new edition which can be used with other books displaying Carder's Steuben glass productions. A cross referencing system links the line drawings of shapes to be found in Paul Gardner's THE GLASS OF FREDERICK CARDER with auction records and references to photos in the nine books cited here: the result is an invaluable index and cross-linked reference Steuben collectors will find essential.
Book Description
This essential reference work provides a detailed study of Frederick Carder, his contributions to the Steuben Glass Works, and the captivating works of art he produced in glass. To dazzle and delight the reader, there are over 760 photographs and 450 line drawings, the vast majority of which provide illustration for 800 pieces of Steuben glass from the famous Rockwell collections. Reference material and photographs never before in print are provided. The text evaluates Carder and the Steuben Glass Works that he cofounded in 1903 in a critical light. It reviews Carder's lengthy and productive career, analyzes his changing role within the company, and places Carder's artistic contributions within the matrix of the international decorative arts industries of his time. A section valuable to all collectors is one in which many aspects of identification and evaluation are covered--signatures, relative rarity, and dating.

Highly Recommended!.......2000-11-04
Frederick Carder and Steuben Glass by Thomas P. Dimitroff is a monumental book. The photographs are fully documented with dates, shape numbers, descriptions, measurements, etc. The text is complete with footnotes. It is a beautiful coffee table book as well as a scholarly text. Information relating to identification and the relative rarity of the various types of glass Carder designed is examined in detail making it a "must have" for collectors, appraisers, or anyone with an interest in Steuben glass.

Book Description
For more than 20 years, the books of photographer Charlie Waite have enthralled lovers of landscape photography everywhere. Now, in a very special collection, he has tried something new; the first volume devoted solely to his black and white images--more than 50 breathtaking plates--many never before published. In the great tradition of Edward Weston and Ansel Adams, he finds in black-and-white a perfect vehicle for revealing his creative voice. These photographs are rich in reflective surfaces, filled with texture, luminosity, and mystery; they capture the subtle shades of desert sand and sky as camels trek through; the vivid personalities of three old men sitting side-by-side in Lijiang, China; the twisted beauty of an unusually shaped tree in Lombardy. Amateur photographers will particularly appreciate the plate index with information on the camera used, the lens, film, exposure, and filter.
Customer Reviews:
Great photos from a master.......2007-07-26
Charlie Waite's black and white photographs are every bit as good as his colour work. I particularly appreciate his infrared work shown in this book. Although I am a digital photographer now and this book features only film based pictures, it is very educational just to look and absorb Charlie Waite's images. Well worth the price. Highly recommended (by me!)
Design Is Not A Subject.......2004-03-18
In the nicest possible way, it is difficult to argue with successful published photographers who lead classes to exotic destinations, but let me try. Into every camera, besides film or flash card, is loaded the aesthetics of the medium. Each release of the shutter a photographer tests their knowledge of it and against what they see "In Their Minds Eye." The first part of seeing with "The Mind's Eye" is choosing a subject to photograph and then coaxing design to help organize the image. Mr. Waite's travel snapshots of the world fall below this threshold. The SUBJECT takes a back seat to DESIGN. A few of the images, like the terra cotta face with water pipe at the mouth, page 101, is not worth film, paper or ink. Many of Mr. Waite's images are bad forgeries of SUBJECTS other photographers' have done with greater care and ability. Mr. Waite's travels took him to America and his subject was the jaws of an earth mover and rock. If he could have spent a few of his travel days moving through the "Grand Circle" in the Southwestern Landscape of America, he would not of included so many cliché photographs of Tuscany. When I buy a book, what I am thinking about is to revisit it, and feel the same way about the photographer's efforts as when I purchased it. For Mr. Waite's book "In My Mind's Eye, Seeing In Black & White", this purchase was returned for the lack of the latter. Craig Carlson, Chula Vista, California, carlson1@mail.sdsu.edu.
