Scotland's a country to see by car. With its lochs and hills, small towns and country inns, you lose a lot of autonomy by depending on public transportation. Frommer's guide presents 25 itineraries--all with precise directions, distances and drive times, sights along the way, history, nature, and family-oriented highlights, recommended walks, scenic side trips, and detailed, accurate route-planning maps.
Divvied up into four regions with five to seven tours each, the routes take one to three days to drive. The writing is informative, and the color photography is splendid, assisting with the task of choosing among the many fine trips. If you're after stony castles, hillside ambles, breathtaking mountain scenery, and watching a man hand-weave tartans on a loom, the "Doon the Watter" tour might appeal, while the "Queen of the South" tour features prehistoric chambered tombs, the Kircudbright Wildlife Park, and a rocky memorial to Robert the Bruce. If, on the other hand, jagged sea shores, old whaling centers, whisky distilleries, and stones with Pictish symbols are more to your fancy, "The Fishing Trail" might interest you more. Either way, Frommer's guide provides wonderful assistance in selecting then enjoying the sort of Scottish holiday you had in mind.

must have for self driving travellers.......2007-05-13
great itinaries for loco-regional driving
quite detail maps and time suggestions
best if include more long trips which cover some of everything
Excellent guide to seeing Scotland from behind the wheel.......2006-02-10
This review is for the 6th edition, 2005 printing.
Excellent guide to seeing Scotland with a sports car or a recreational vehicle (RV; a home on wheels). You will enjoy some great driving tours and routes through this historical region of United Kingdom.
Frommers has recently come out with more "Best-Loved Driving Tours" series ... guides that are not very inexpensive, but are very well researched and quite comprehensive. One will have plenty of driving tours and routes to chose from, whether you like arts and museums, scenic roads and breathtaking views, urban towns and shopping, or just want to experience a regione's culture and life.
Unlike the other Frommer guides that are fatter and heavier, this little book gives you not too many specifics on lodging or eating. It is geared strictly for the person behind the wheel and her or his passengers.
I have had a great experience using this guide and will recommend it to anyone who can afford it. Also, you might want to check to see if your library carries it and check it out for the duration of your visit abroad.
When I backpacked 4 months through Europe I had a copy of the Lonely Planet for Europe (a thick and heavy book) because it covered more cities and esoteric towns, a ripped chapters of all the international youth hostals Europe of the countries I visited, and as primary guide for nominal cities and capitals I used Frommers (ripped the book and kept only chapters of countries planning to visit - so I can keep the weight down).
This book definitely came in handy.......2003-08-15
For all the hours we spent in the car, this book definitely came in handy. With full-color photos and maps, history and tips on scenic side trips, this guide was the best for our driving tour. The itineraries were well thought out and were a great guide and resource.
Didn't look at this one at all.......2003-06-20
I really wasn't very impressed with the outline. I would recommend Scoland the Best and then the Eyewitness guide as a must if traveling to Scotland. It was not very specific, and the tours for the most part were too long. Most were 2 days, and we were in different places every other night which really didn't allow us to do what the tours suggest.
How much time do you have?.......2003-03-30
This book is going to be of little use to someone who is going to Scotland for a week to 10 days for their first visit. It seems that the original audience for this book is the AA, Automobile Assn (in the US, AAA) members looking for vacations or day trips. Although the book gives 25 great routes to take for scenery, it does not spend very much space telling you about what it is you are seeing when you get there, assuming you already know the history of the castle and so forth.
This book could be very helpful if you were going to be in country for a couple of weeks or months, then coupled with more informative, detail oriented guides, this could lead you to some wonderful vistas. Depends on how much time you have, and what you have seen already in Scotland. If you have been there before, a leisurely driving trip could be just the thing.

Growing Hawaii's Native Plants.......2007-08-03
Great book. It gives the common name, the latin name and the Hawaiian name of plants we find here in Hawai'i. 416 pages chock full of easy to read and apply methods of growing Hawaiian plants. Lavishly illustrated, generous size of 9 by 11 inches, this is a must have for growers, artists and students of Hawaiian plants. This is the best $45 I have spent on books in a long time. Thanks to the author and publisher.

Excellent Study of the Dar al-Ifta.......2002-05-01
This work is within the stream of a lot of scholarship that has recently been paying close attention to the role of the fatwa in Islamic discourse; moreover, it also succeeds well in describing the fatwas in terms of their modern significance in juxtaposition to their traditional role in Islamic society. Egypt as the home of al-Azhar as Islam's most prestigious instution of traditional Islamic learning and the [now disupted] leader of the Arab-World is a an excellent location for the study to take place. The author effectively places the rise of the Dar al-Ifta in the context of Egyptian Islam, International Islamic bodies, and the modern crisis of religious authority facing Islam today. In addition to this, his examination of the careers and fatwas of Egypts most famous Muftis, Gad al-Haqq and Sayyid al-Tantawi, is excellent and quite useful. Recommended for those interested in Islam in Egypt in particular, but this work would also be useful for a general study of Islamic authority in practice [as co-opted by a modern nation-state in this particular case].
Defining Islam for the Egyptian State.......2001-08-06
Should Islam ban insurance (as a form of gambling) or permit it (because its purpose is the reduce risk)? What about the telegraph, the hat, and reasonable interest on certificates of deposit? The answer to these and other questions comes in a fatwa, an advisory opinion on Islamic law issued by a religious authority known as a mufti. More than any other mechanism, fatwas provide a way for Islam to adopt to new places and times; as such, they constitute a basic building block of Muslim life, though one only recently receiving the attention they deserve. Skovgaard-Petersen, a Danish scholar, moves the process greatly forward through his excellent study of their "gradual institutionalization" in twentieth-century Egypt, the country perhaps most crucial to their development. As his title suggests, he argues that the mufti was the key intermediary between events on the ground and the government's interpretation of them. Even more: the mufti became "a central figure" in developing the political meaning of Egypt's Islamic identity. Skovgaard-Petersen pays particular attention to a ground-breaking fatwa by the renowned scholar, Muhammad 'Abduh (1849-1905), in which he permitted Muslims in South Africa to eat the meat of animals slaughtered by Christians. Not only was the distance involved startling, but so was the permission. With this, 'Abduh introduced a "new kind of public fatwa: the daring well-researched statement, where the State Mufti is reconsidering the Islamic tradition taking into account the needs of the time." He has had many successors, and cumulatively they have done much to adapt Islam to modernity.

A snapshot of the oldest continuous civilization in Europe.......2006-07-28
The Basque people are certainly an interesting race; it is believed that theirs is one of the oldest languages in Europe. Where they came from and how they ended up in northern Spain has been a point of contention between anthropologists for some time. They suffered terribly during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930's; the famous painting by Picasso represents some of the suffering in the Basque city of Guernica. The people of that city had the dubious distinction of being the first in history to have been the victims of the deliberate terror bombing of civilians. The Euskadi Ta Askatasuna or ETA has been engaged in a decade's long struggle to create an independent homeland for the Basque people out of the Basque areas in Spain and France.
This book is a collection of photos taken in the Basque regions in Spain and France. It is a rugged, yet beautiful land; most of the buildings are very old. While there are some modern devices displayed in the pictures, the majority could have been taken decades ago and some perhaps over a century ago. People are meeting over drinks, coffee and traditional food. Some of the beautiful pictures of the villages in the valleys could have been taken at the turn of the century.
When people appear in the photo, one thing is clear. The Basques are a very proud people, they have lived on and worked their land for centuries and will continue to do so. Rugged mountains and terrain breeds rugged, hardy people and that certainly describes the Basques. No small set of photographs with associated explanations in a book can truly describe any culture, especially one this old. However, it can both literally and figuratively give you a snapshot and that is done very well in this book.
"The time between dogs and wolves".......2001-05-12
"A Time We Knew: Images of Yesterday in the Basque Homeland" is the product of a fascinating collaboration between photographer William Albert Allard and the dean of Basque-American literature, Robert Laxalt.
In the fall of 1967, Allard spent two months in the Basque country of northeastern Spain and southwestern France, capturing with his camera the everyday life of the people who lived there. Although Allard spoke no Basque and was linked to the Basque country only through his Basque wife, his stunning photos evoke the tremendous power of the Basque landscape and people: the haunting flanks of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques at evening; the gloomy mountains of the northern coast of Spain just at the approach of a storm; a rough-hewn woman with a scythe at Behorleguy, on the frontier between youth and age, in whose face is reflected the painful past of the ancient Basque people. From a technical point-of-view, these incredible photographs are so good that they could truly be "images of yesterday": the color is brilliant. Alas, though, "yesterday" in the Basque country is no more. The years since 1967 have seen the heavy industrialization of both the French and Spanish sectors of the Basque homeland and the gradual passing of the ancient ways Allard captures here.
Laxalt's contribution to this book is his prose vignettes, some of the best of his characteristically exquisite prose-poetry. A second-generation Basque-American whose father grew up in the French Basque country, Laxalt knows the region as well as probably anyone in the United States. While one cannot miss the heavy dose of romanticism in his prose ("Girls slender as reeds walking hand in hand down the lane, singing an ode to spring in soprano voices pure and light as air") and even pastoralism (exacerbated by the fact that the Basques are some of the world's greatest shepherds), it is obvious that Laxalt is a remarkable writer.
A poetic look at "yesterday" in the Basque country. Get it on your shelf.
