A delight to find.......2005-08-01

I was delighted to find this book in the Hovenweep National Monument visitor centre bookstore. I had already photographed the wild flowers of Arches, Canyonlands and Colorado for my website. Now I could identify them. The book organises the flowers by colour which is good for an amateur like me. Now, I have to admit that I could not identify all the species I photographed, but I was pleased when I could. A big thank you to Damian Fagan for this book, I thought I might be a little bit too excentric hunting for new wild flowers in Canyondlands and Arches National Parks, even worse photographing wild flowers during my lunch hour while working in Colorado.

Absolutely delightful.......2000-06-22

The Colorado Plateau country of southern Utah, western Colorado, and northern Arizona is justifiably famous for its magnificent scenery, but the stunning wildflowers are less widely appreciated. Fagan's "Canyon Country Wildflowers" is the best guide to these treasures that I've yet seen. The photographs are absolutely top-notch (sometimes I browse the guide, just daydreaming...), often showing the entire plant in its natural habitat. Likewise, the collection is relatively complete. Flowers are organized by colors and typically easy to find. To top it off, the book is relatively compact and durable in the field. A Champion!.......2005-09-19

Heidi's account of her on-going quest to comeback from paralysis is a beautiful statement of her courage, intelligence and spiritual knowledge. I finally got around to reading this book that a friend gave me and I am so glad I did. What she has to say is a message for all of us. A message on inner peace of understanding how we truly work...physically, emotionally, spiritually, mentally. She is a remarkable woman to not give up and to understand that the physical is just one element of who we are. Do yourself a favor and read this book.

Inspiring and Motivating.......2001-07-05

I just finished this book, and I would recommend it to anyone with a spinal injury, especially those who were once athletic. If you ever feel like "giving up", then you MUST read this book!! Matter of fact, I plan to read it again. Inspiring! The book reminded me I MUST keep moving!! Never stop!! Don't give up!!! As long as you keep moving, you'll get better, day by day. Don't ever let the "inner you" die; for THAT INNER SPIRIT is what will keep you and your body alive, and make life meaningful.

Inspirational, thought provoking and even a tad irreverant........1998-12-31

In November,1994, was wife and I were involved in a motor vehicle accident which left her a C-6 quad. Ever since the accident I have attempted to create a life which may have resembled that which we used to enjoy yet I was never quite able to find the "magic bullet". When I read the review of Heidi's book I felt I had nothing to loose but to purchase it. I have to tell you, it was Good Medicine! My wife poured through the book several times and with each reading felt more inspired to never end for quest for the cure. In addition to a renewed zeal to live life again Kathleen began to exercise religiously and see progressas aeach week passed. kathleen continues to this day to inform me that "Heidi would do this each day and eventually........" In a nutshell "My Soul Purppose" is a painfully truthful account of a young woman who has sustained an injury which only those who too have sustained a SCI can have an appreciation for her personal tale. Rather than painting a picture of woe Heidi provides personal experiences which provides hope and inspirastion for those individuals who have sustained a SCI. To see the smile and sense the inner peace which my wife experienced as she read "My Soul Purpose" made me accutely aware that the healing which occurs after a SCI is clearly more spiritual than physical. Suffice it is to say that this book has provided the direction to heal the psyche, now it is just a matter of being patient for the rest of the healing to occur!

This book reads very well. The advice is sensible and doable. The author presents an approach to stylishly clothing and organizing oneself.

The author's biases about color preference and style of clothing do come through though one cannot question her belief in what she states-she sold her wedding gown to finance her business venture.

All in all a useful book.

Great advice on taking control of your wardrobe.......2006-06-08

This is a terrific pracitcal guide to organizing your wardrobe and style to make life easier, and project a confident image. Mary Lou provides useful advice on how to understand your lifestyle and body, and organize your wardrobe accordingly. And her stories are fun! Since reading her book, I've redone my closet so I can walk out of the door feeling completely put-together (no shoes with messy heels, clothes with missing buttons, or mismatched accessories.) I also consigned 20 pieces, invested in a few outfits that make me feel terrific, and people keep asking me if I lost weight!

I highly recommend this book regardless of your budget, age, style or body type! And I hear Mary Lou Andre might have a new book in the works - can't wait!

Great Wardrobe Guidance .......2006-02-26

Mary Lou Andre knows what she is talking about when she gives down-to-earth advice on organizing your closet and building a good basic professional wardrobe. Her recommendation to first go "shopping" in your own closet so that you can focus on what you really need to buy to make everything work is excellent. Following her advice in this book will help you avoid impulse buying and style mistakes.

Good book, but goes overboard on how many clothes you really need........2005-08-06

This is a 3.5 star book. 5-stars if you live/work in an area where people pay more attention to your clothes than how well you do your job and/or you go to a lot of formal functions. 1-2 stars if you are a work/stay-at-home parent looking to upgrade your wardrobe a bit.

Good points: Clear descriptions of types of dress for various situations, including business casual (always a tricky one). Clear steps on how to "shop in your closet" and reorganize it. Some good forms in the back to help you keep track of what you have and what you need to shop for. Pictures of some clothing styles, types of shoes, etc., all line drawings, there are no color photos in the book anywhere. Good plan for what to do when you're at the store, and what to look for in good dressing rooms. Lots of suggestions for accessories, as well as what to keep in your office for the occasional clothing emergency.

Bad points: Not enough on seasonal dressing for your climate--she assumes that everyone has (or should have) 4 full seasons' worth of clothes. Ahem(!) In for example, Southern California, you pretty much have dry season and wet season. Northern California, and the Pacific Northwest, you need some clothing for cold weather, but hardly a "season's" worth, and so on. And trenchcoats are great for cities with sidewalks, or where you drive up in a car and get dropped of at the curb and never touch dirt or grass. For people in climates where it only occasionally gets cold, one or two coats and perhaps a nice wrap is plenty.

Occasional silly rules like "no straw hats after Labor Day" which perhaps apply to New York and points north (the author lives in Boston), where it gets cold in the autumn, but not in Southern California, or other states where summer-type weather extends well into November. She also doesn't like athletic shoes with business wear while commuting. It apparently doesn't occur to her that perhaps people wear them for comfort (because they have to stand for an hour or longer on the train or bus) and safety (never know when you might have to run from a mugger). Very few formal/work shoes are truly comfortable and safe to run in (or even walk fast). When they make such things, people will buy them, until then, it is athletic shoes.

Relies too much on black as the basis of a wardrobe. Black is great on many people, but by no means everyone. She says people "don't remember" black. If you wear any color to excess, people will remember it.

I didn't see her advice so much as "dated"; instead, it seemed very "back east" and corporate-oriented, and it helped if you have tons of money to spend.

She insists that everyone needs at least one suit. If you do not work in any outside job, "business casual" will carry you through everything except a true formal occasion. You're much better off spending money on quality separates. She is very into "power dressing" and it gets annoying after a while if you're the type of person who pays attention to the person, not the clothing.

Bottom line, a good book if you live back east, or in your very large cities where at least some people pay attention to fashion. For the rest of us, some good sound info, but you have to wade through some annoying attitudes to get to it. And there are mistakes in the index. A good companion book would be Does This Make Me Look Fat? by Leah Feldon, which has more and better line drawings and better ideas for what to look for to make the most of your figure, whatever size it is.

Practical, open and interesting!.......2005-08-04

This is a great book because it is so practical. The author is really specific and covers just about every aspect of a wardrobe, from orgaization to shopping to the best clothes for every woman. It can be a bit old-fashioned at times, but overall it is one of my favorites. I especially like the author telling us about what is in her closet, it adds interest and helps the reader to visualize the same concepts in her own.
