5 out of 5 stars The best of the best.......2006-06-15

A lot of interesting and helpful information is packed into this small trail guide making it a must-have when walking Hadrian's Wall. The maps are clear and precise with commentary that allows the walker to interpret structures along the way. The small loop hikes included are an extra bonus and well worth taking. The text alerts the reader to small items of interest that might otherwise be missed along the footpath, like the Roman mile stone on the path to Vindolanda. Brief essays introduce the reader to a bit of context for the Wall. If you buy only one book, this should probably be it.

5 out of 5 stars Well illustrated, well written - just like being there.......2004-04-15

This is a great travel book, a synthesis of fine writing, beautiful color pictures, and excellent Ordnance Survey maps. It pulls a region together and makes it feel like you are there.

Starting with a few wide range maps and a bit of history, this National Trail Guide sets the context of Hadrian's Wall in time and in space, both how to get there, and why you would want to visit. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a British National Trail (one of 13), and an important historical site, Hadrian's Wall offers many beautiful natural vistas, archaeological and Roman historical sites, and a cross section of British city, town, and country life. All arranged in a linear 84 mile (135 km) national park.

The book assumes a walking tour, with an introduction, 6 descriptive tour chapters, and a few sections on resources and additonal reading. The most interesting parts for me are the 6 tours. Each chapter is nicely arranged with a map or photo per page with descriptive text along side.

The Ordnance Survey maps are the best in the world - very readable and clear. This book reprints the 1:25,000 maps verbatim, the same as you get at Ordnance Survey Get-a-Map ( http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/). Similarly, the photos of buildings and vistas along the wall are well done - colorful and excellent resolution.

However, what is most impressive is the prose that winds along the maps and photos. "Where the verge path ends, cross the stile and continue on the footpath inside the wall. Now having joined the field, the Vallum looks even more impressive." Reading the words and following along the maps makes the tour completely life-like for me, making me feel like I am walking along with a tour guide.

The book is printed on thick paper with nicely embossed textured heavy-stock cover stock. The page corners are rounded nicely. Completely high quality.

Perhaps the book can be improved by more depth. I would love to read a bit more about the pubs or the sleeping accomodations. However, I too understand that this information would change quickly or perhaps be a bit too partisan.

In the end, the book makes me want to revisit the area. It also makes me want to get other titles in the series such as Offa's Dyke, The Pennine Way, or The Thame's Path - place I have never been. For me that is the mark of a true travelogue: it makes you want to rush out and see the place firsthand.

                  Book Description

This new volume, which draws on an international selection of entries from a great number of countries, testifies to innovation in the planning and management of events, as well as offering professional designers, event managers and the fair-going public a range of visual delights and exhibited inspirations. To research this work, design journalist and insider Conway Lloyd Morgan visited the most significant trade fairs, examining small and large trade fair stands in Detroit, Bologna, Paris, Amsterdam, Basel, Berlin, Munich, Hanover, Frankfurt, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, Tokyo, among others.

                  Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Trade Fair Design Annual 2002/2003.......2003-04-29

The focus of this edition of TRADE FAIR DESIGN ANNUAL 2002/2003 is put on stands at international trade shows and on exhibits up to 15 000sq feet. Among the 27 examples are stands for Mercedes Benz by KauffmannTheilig and by American stars in the fair business like Mauk Design for Sony Computers Play Station or Lorenc+Yoo for Sony Ericsson.
Although many of the extraordinary stands displayed come from German designers the book shows that today good exhibit design is also made in the UK and in the United States.
As with most trade fair design books coming from avedition this book shows respect to the great overall design idea, presented in sumptuous king size pictures, ... an impression that is backed by the total appearance of the book.
The book consists of five chapters, showing fair stands for transportation, life style, b2b, communication and out of the hall. The design ideas are commented in typically English twinkle toed text, which comes from the London Journalist Conway Lloyd Morgan.

Another new book on the design of stands for fairs and trade shows comes from the German interior design publicist Ingrid Wenz-Gahler and - in total contrast to the book by Conway Lloyd Morgan - concentrates on SMALL stands.
In spite of its English title BIG IDEAS FOR SMALL STANDS the publisher abstained from an English translation - very unusual for books by Ingrid Wenz-Gahler - so you will have to order the book via friends in Europe through amazon.de.
Corresponding with its subtitle - Success with Small Stands - this book concentrates on the 90 percent of all stands for fairs and trade shows which are smaller than 250sq feet. The book shows 66 examples of stands from almost all sectors of business, presented with numerous photos, floor plans and their design and marketing concept. - A guidebook for all those marketing people or designers who are responsible for their companies or their clients performance at a trade show. Although the stands are small many of them have been conceived by stars in this business such as Fabio Novembre, Simone Micheli, Stefan Zwicky, Jordan Mozer or Lorenc+Yoo.

Both books complement one another and provide ideas and arguments how your presentation at a fair or trade show can be more efficient.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book.......2006-04-04

I bought this book years ago because of a glowing review in a book close out catalog. I really had no interest in beavers. I was suprised I could not put the book down. It is wonderfully written. Like a funny movie, I feel better after reading this book. The insights into the life and habits of beavers are overwhelming. I had no idea these creatures were so human like. The story is often funny, but we see the sad side when some punky teens try to destroy the beavers home. I have lent the book to many friends, after working hard to convence them it really is a great story. Each person, male and female, loved the story. I just bought multiple copies to loan, and some for gifts, something I have never done with any other book.

I really didn't have much interest in beavers, but when I was given this book, Lily Pond, I decided to go ahead and read it. I finished it in 2 days, it was phenominal. The way she talked about the beavers was like a sitcom, but at the same time you learned so much. I didn't have to force myself to concentrate, like I normally do with text books, for one second, but the abundance of information I got from this book never fails to amaze me. I have to give Hope Ryden 2 thumbs up for this book. It's one you can't put down no matter how hard you try. I was really sad when it was over.

5 out of 5 stars One of My All-Time Favorite Books.......1998-06-23

This is a wonderful book by a wonderful naturalist. Follow a beaver family through seasons of plenty and hardship. Ryden weaves a delightful and moving tale while at the same time maintaining her integrity as a keen observer of animal behavior.

5 out of 5 stars Heart rendering look into the world of the Beaver........1996-12-08

An insightful look into the saga of a Beaver family. The lives of this Beaver family comes alive through the eyes of author Hope Ryden. You'll begin to feel you're right there with her as she studies this Beaver family over the course of four years painstaking work. Ms. Ryden does an excellent job of conveying what this family of Beavers is up to and you learn an outstanding amount of information about the natural history of Beavers. You become both attached to Ms. Ryden and the family of beavers, feeling both her joy and pain as you see their lives progress before you. I even shed some tears..it was that good. Thanks Ms. Ryden, for an outstanding piece of nature writing

Hope Ryden describes the natural world like no other author. Her writing is informative and entertaining. You learn and love the creatures described in her writing. Lily Pond allows you to become a member of beaver family. You feel the pain of winter, the joy of new life. If you like nature, you'll like Hope Ryden's Lily Pond

                              Book Description

This volume consists of two sections, written by the two authors. The first section contains a study by Manfred Heuser on The Manichaean Myth According to Coptic Sources. This is the first systematic presentation of the basic myth as reflected in Coptic material. The second part is a collection of essays on Manichaeism by Hans-Joachim Klimkeit. The essays are concerned, inter alia, with Manichaean art and symbolism, including newly found examples of Manichaean art from Central Asia.

5 out of 5 stars Important and superb: thoroughly researched views and thrilling new insights.......2006-07-18

Compared with the first decades after the publication (1959) of the Gospel of Thomas in modern languages, now we can experience in this superb and insightful publication a new phase in the academic study of this gospel, and not only of this one. At first sight not very different from other comparable publications, it is the result of colloquia about a subject from which the papers are now published. But then we have to mention the qualities of this group of academicians, working on more or less the same fields. They not only have incorporated all the work done at the Gospel until yet, but they bring its study further to an very high degree. This because of their new methodological frameworks (which as such I will not deal with here further) which not only are very promising but even now already bringing thrilling new perspectives and probable interpretations. And as we know, from the beginning of the publication of this Gospel the stakes were high: possible new views and insights about the historical Jesus being the most visible of those.
Interesting is that many of the articles begin with a history of the research and then follow up with the new methods and results that now become visible, not only applicable in this field of study but in those of many texts and scriptures in Hellenistic times. I do however mention the article of April DeConick in which she illustrates her hypothesis that the Gospel of Thomas is built from the composition of "sayings of Jesus" into five speeches with a common pattern of begin and end, with the probability that later reworkings of the different sayings can be traced. From which also follows that she can offer a hypothetical `original Gospel of Thomas', in which the later redactions are removed. Ofcourse implicit in this hypothesis is the possibility that new views can be traced about the intentions of the sayings and the Gospel as a whole. She argues that clearly an opposition can be traced to the Pharisees, and explains the famous saying 42 in this context meaning "Stay away from the teachings of the Pharisees" (meaning the representatives of the `old' Jewish rituals, traditions and scriptures). Surely less strange at first sight is her hypothesis that this Gospel represents the tradition of followers of Jesus who changed their intentions from Jesus' and his early followers' apocalyptic as well as "realizing-eschatological" and mystical views to less apocalyptic and more mystical views, because after the fall of Jerusalem and its temple in about 70C the expectation of the near end of the world changed into more emphasis on the role of Jesus as teacher of wisdom and enlightenment (already present from the first phase of the tradition of sayings of Jesus). Ofcourse this summary of a summary is much too short to be used as a complete view of DeConick insights.
Another article I want to mention is the one by Vernon K. Robbins, which uses examples of the way of reasoning within Mediterranean wisdom texts, which way is also clearly used by the Gospel of Thomas, as well as for example in the synoptic gospels. An important notion of `contrawisdom' comes to bear much fruit. For example in his analysis and explanation of saying 14 that fasting, praying and giving alms will harm the disciples, of saying 13 that Jesus is not their teacher. What comes to light is that conventional wisdom will be surpassed by this contrawisdom without comparison. The secret knowledge to be found, is only found by seeking and finding (saying 2), that is by leaps of insight which a person can have if letting her- or himself awake by the words and inspiration of Jesus, and can not always be expressed in logical language. Because it opens up the totally new, uncomparable with the experience of this world, that is when one returns to the beginning before the beginning. The method examplified and used by Robbins again seems to be very promising to me. As very important I see his note at the end that this method should not be restricted to this small field or even that of Hellenistic texts but should be used to find a basis for analysis of and comparison with text from other cultures of the world, not only from different times in the West but also different times and places in the rest of the world and of history.
My restriction here to only these two articles is not justified in comparison with the rest of the book. There is not one article which is not very interesting in some or another way, often more ways, especially the elucidating article by Philip H. Sellews about every Hellenist reader's associations with the words of saying 42: messages from the graves at the road side when entering a town.
To give at least some furhter hints, I have noted a few details from here and there, to get some appetite:
                              1. "Thomas does not need a story, a myth of origins ... Those who made use of this gospel were convinced that the insights they enjoyed from the living Jesus (Prologue) could now pour forth from them just as authentically as it did, or does, from Jesus himself (13, 108)." (Patterson, p. 8)
                              2. "When Jesus urges the readers of Thomas to become passers-by, he tells them not to linger in this world, not to be caught up in the trap of conversation, or better, relations with the "living dead" all around them. ... to reach their heavenly home above in the realm of light. ... to return to the place of their beginning and their end, ..." (Sellew, p. 73)
                              3. "So prominent are the parallels between Timaeus and the Gospel of Thomas in the context of the question about origins and creation ... that it practically takes an effort to overlook them or ignore them. ... The Gospel of Thomas does, indeed, share many features with philosophical texts of the Hellenistic age ... Why not also the Greek and Hellenistic epic traditions? ... What is "old" for the scribe in Matthew has a completely different reference than what is "old" garment in the Gospel of Thomas: two separate and distinct epic worlds." "Thus, while the Gospel of Thomas certainly shows knowledge of the Hebrew epic and indeed, argues against it, it uses Greek epical motifs for its very own presentation." (Asgeirsson, pp.169-171, 174)
                              4. "I agree with the approach of Richard Valantasis, who calls the theology of the Gospel of Thomas a performative theology. This theology, Valantasis affirms, emerges from the active response of readers and interpreters to the sayings of Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas, as these readers "construct their own narrative and theology linking the individual sayings into a cohesive text." Hence, there meay be no single authoritative interpretation of Gos. Thom. 42. Readers of the Gospel of Thomas are to discover for themselves what it means to become passersby." "I suggest, like Dewey, that the historical Jesus spoke of passing by in aphorism ... he also lived in those terms, as a Jewish preacher of wisdom with an itinerant lifestyle and a challenging rhetorical style. ... Jesus encouraged listeners to encounter his words creatively, so that a call to passing by could entail a fundamental challenge to various aspects of everyday life." (Meyer, pp. 265, 270)
This list again is only a fraction of the interesting details and discussions in this remarkable rich book. Many of the sayings of the Gospel of Thomas as well as many parallels are dealt with.

One can say that in this book we see the outline of the new frontiers of the academic research in not only the Gospel of Thomas and the Thomasine traditions, but also in the history of Christian Judaism as the forerunner of more and more Hellenized Christian movements, traditions and cults (including the scriptures contained and carried further in the emerging "New Testament") eventually of the establishing of catholic Christianity - only one of those traditions, albeit politically the most powerful one - as official religion of the Roman state, end 4th century. And not only in these areas of research but also in other Greek and Latin texts and traditions, including a variety of mystery religious texts, gnostic religious texts, philosophical and epic texts etcetera. To me it seems that the history of the birth of Christianity, Rabbinic Judaism, Manichaeism as well as Islam from their pre-Christian Judaistic and / or from their Hellenizing Judaistic and /or Greek and / or other roots needs to be written anew, now not from the perspective of later dominant traditions but from a thorough new study of the original texts and other data themselves. It seems that the role of Christian Judaism will be seen as more prominent within this context than thus far has been recognized generally, although at the same time the differences between the traditions will be described in other terms, if not the traditions themselves will be divided or subdivide otherwise or anew. For example the role of Jesus as "the only true prophet" in Thomasine traditions has much in common with comparable traditions in Manichaeism (relating to Mani) and Islam (relating to Mohammad), the last probably building further on, because influjenced by the Christian Judaistic traditions. And this will not be the only example.
Ofcourse this is a major achievement, to give insight in the new frontiers of these academic studies. But that these authors and their colleagues in the first part decided to organize their work together and come to so a fruitful collective effort, has to be applauded greatly. Hats off.
We might conclude that this should not be the end or their results, as they now seem to have laid the basis for much further possible fruitful work. It is clear that this work will need thorough methodological verification and discussion, and let's hope that not all opinions will grow together to only one in the next few years, because this would mean that this promising work would be finished too soon. On the contrary, let's hope that the big hypotheses and proposals of reading and interpreting the Thomasine traditions, in particular the Gospel of Thomas, will be continued in several different ways and with different methodologies as consistent as possible, so that we all can reap the fruit of that. In a context which perhaps now not even can be seen in its full implications. For so rich these trajectories and their promises seem to be.
Apart from excellent notes, bibliography, and indexes this book contains a lot of references to important literature (recent) as well as new views of what was important literature in the century behind us. These are entailed in the notes and in the introductions of several articles. Remarkable is that many authors are very positive about recent studies of Richard Valantasis on place and meaning of asceticism in the first centuries of our era (see indexes and bibliography). Valantasis describes ascetic practice as a set of "performances ... intended to inaugurate a new subjectivity, different social relations, and an alternative symbolic universe." (31) Indeed this is a crucial aspect in interpreting the Gospel of Thomas, perhaps able to explain the universal impact of its sayings to many readers from many different traditions.
To my joy the sensitively and intuitively research of my teacher and promotor Gilles Quispel, who died this year at the age of 89 years in Egypt, still full of interest in the Gospel of Thomas, is mentioned in this publication with respect and sympathy and several times with confirmation (among others from April DeConick, who will have learned from his work through one of her teachers, Jarl Fossum, also a pupil of Gilles Quispel), together with the other pioneers in this field. The seed of Thomas' spirituality which he sowed and took care of within me, is enlivened very much through this enormously interesting publication. I also see with joy that my former teacher, since long Professor, Tjitze Baarda, well known for his wit, modesty and learnedness, has been a partner in the work of this important forum of researchers as a member of the steering committee. We joyfully have (had) a lot of information and inspiration available also within the Netherlands, it seems. So let's carry on!

Summarizing this review I only can repeat: superb, important, giving direction for future research and interpretation, with unmissable insights for the academic researcher as well as for the general reader of the Gospel of Thomas interested in its historical context and (spiritual) meaning.

With the continued expansion of the literary canon, multicultural works of modern literary fiction and autobiography have assumed an increasing importance for students and scholars of American literature. This exciting new series assembles key documents and criticism concerning these works that have so recently become central components of the American literature curriculum. Each casebook will reprint documents relating to the work's historical context and reception, present the best in critical essays, and when possible, feature an interview of the author. The series will provide, for the first time, an accessible forum in r ich readers can come to a fuller understanding of these contemporary masterpieces and the unique aspects of American ethnic, racial, or cultural experience that they so ably portray. This case book presents a thought-provoking overview of critical debates surrounding The Woman Warrior, perhaps the best known Asian American literary work. The essays deal with such issues as the reception by various interpretive communities, canon formation, cultural authenticity, fictionality in autobiography, and feminist and poststructuralist subjectivity. The eight essays are supplemented an interview with the author and a bibliography.

An haunting book that details the life of a Chinese American woman who struggles to find herself. Although the non-chronological structuring of the book is rather hard to follow, it is amazing. This book leaves an indelible mark on the mind and pierces the soul. Extremely recommended!

Maxine Hong Kingston's autobiography is a complex work that takes careful analyzation. To fully understand how she uses this piece to tell her story, one must examine several aspects of Chinese culture. It is an interesting work that requires thought.
