Book Description
Dendrobium is an enormous orchid genus of more than 1000 species native to south Asia, Australia and New Zealand, and Oceania. They are highly popular among orchid growers for their beauty and diversity. This study by three plant scientists who are also active orchid growers presents more than 400 of the species, all illustrated with color photographs. Almost all the horticulturally popular species are included, along with some lesser-known but spectacular species recently discovered in the highlands of New Guinea that are likely to become popular in the future.

My handbook on the genus Dendrobium.......2007-01-04
This is a really great authoritive book with plenty of information on the genus and a lot of informative pictures. At my opinion, it is the most best organised book on the Dendrobiums presently on market.
Awesome!!!!.......2003-07-29
I am an avid Dendrobium orchid grower.
Absolutely love this book, there are few orchids books around that go this indepth into any genera of orchid keeping. It's good to see a detailed book which give plenty of cultural information on each species. I particularly liked the descriptions of the natural growing environments, it helps me with their cultural requirements so I can grow them in my glass house.
This one is a most own book for any Dendrobium grower or any orchid show judge.
It's really A To Z Dendrobium species book!.......2002-09-09
This book really help me to identify Dendrobium species and its relative like Epigenium and Flickengeria, almost all popular Dendrobium species from India, S.E Asia and some Pacific island included. Good color plate and description about plant origins and distribution. A must have book for Orchid lover.
First rate super buy!.......2000-12-06
Having grown orchids for more than 20 years, this book is outstanding in it's treatment of the genus Dendrobium. There are lots of superb features which are helpful the novice and the scientist. Particularly useful are the tables denoting geographic distribution, sectional division of like-groups of Dendrobs, and individual color-plates with information on hundreds of plants.
Must have for any serious grower. Can be a great coffee table book as well. Why did I just by one for a gift?... James Roberts --- Roberts Orchids
Excellent Resource for Dendrobium Growers.......2000-11-23
This book covers every aspect of Dendrobium culture, from the plant origins, biology, conservation, cultivation and hybridization.
The chapter on cultivation goes into great detail about growing Dendrobiums from seed including flasking and caring for the seedlings.
Approximately 175 pages are then devoted to photos and detailed information on 413 species of Dendrobium.
The Dendrobium family is very large and hard to generalize, making this book a big help in locating information about your specific orchids.

If only there was more.......2007-05-25
this book lives up to its underground billing as we are drawn into the Mexican Revolution in a way that makes us seem to be riding with Pancho Villa and living with the villagers along the way. It reminds one of a Hemingway report except with added detail. The only complaint is that it is not longer for it leaves you the urge to read more Reed.
Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.......2000-03-21
In this account of his adventures in the advance to Mexico City with Pancho Villa's armies, John Reed gives an excellent account of what it was like to have been there. Luckily enough for him, historians, and adventure lovers alike, he was on the winning side and survived to tell his tale. His tale is his aspect of the venture among the soldiers who fought the battles, rode the trains, suffred the hardships of civil war, and tasted the glow of victories won on the way to the capitol city. It's gritty, putrid, rough and tumble and the food isn't great but at the end you get a heck of a kick from surviving it all.
John Reed's writing style is great.......1999-07-30
This book was written over 80 years ago, so as military journalism it is quite dated. However, the author's portraits of people and places are so vivid that the characters and events seem to come alive. The author displays a novelist's talent for description. It is a very sympathetic portrait of Pancho Villa. I don't know how historically accurate it is, but it is certainly interesting reading.
Classic Work on its Era.......1999-07-13
This book has been notorious since its publication in 1914. The authorm a reporter for the American radical press, did not go to Mexico City riding in relative comfort on the press train accompaning the Division del Norte General Francisco "Pancho" Villa during rhe successful Constitutionalist southward campaign against the Federalista forces of the usurper General Victoriano Huerta, he who had murdered president Madero and his vice president, and siezed power in Mexico City.
Reed, instead in accord with his common man leaning, lived among the "grunts", Mexican campesinos who made up the bulk of Villa's forces.
There are incisive pen portraits of the Constitutionalist leaders, descriptions of the wretched living conditions of the people, and observations on the siege of Torréon, N.L.. and nearby Gomez Palacio, neighboring key strategic cities on the railroad south from Juarez to Mexico City.
This is not history or reporting but a collection of impressionistic and justifiably biased essays. Still very valuable for the feel of the times and has been translated into many languages. The author later went to Russia and wrote "Ten Days That Shook the World." (c.f.) about the October Revolution.

Book Description
Esteemed historian Albert Marrin offers an absorbing account of our first president's life and times in this biography, which was named a Booklist Editors' Choice and a School Library Journal Best Book.
Customer Reviews:
A great book about a great man!.......2003-08-22
Marrin's book is history at its most entertaining and enlightening! Although targeted at young adults, I would also recommend it to many adult readers.
As someone who has read numerous "serious" history books that are frequently so dry and obtuse as to be inaccessable to the average reader, I would suggest Albert Marrin's George Washington & the Founding of a Nation. At 257 pages, the book is an enjoyable week's read covering all of the basic points of Washington's life and times. At its core it is fundamentally entertaining and would compare favorably with a Clancy or Grisham novel.
Marrin's work takes Washington down off his pedestal and displays the full humanity of the man. His tremendous courage and bravery, his sharp opportunism and the moral dilemmas he faced by owing slaves.
Marrin served as a junior high history teacher before becoming a university professor and eventually heading the history department at Yeshiva University in New York City. Clearly this is a man who spent his life making history come alive for young minds and he succeeds in this work both for young adults and for other adults who are looking for a greater appreciation of one of the key founders of the United States.
A special note for parents considering the work for young adults. Marrin's work is clearly inappropriate for younger children, but would be a great book for the child beginning to enter the world of adult reading. In Marrin's book the world is a far more complicated place than the world as explained in elementary school history texts. All of the historical figures are displayed with empathy and with their humanity open for inspection. The book should probably be rated R for violence, battle scenes are discussed realistically, and without being gratuitous, the author vividly describes the horrors of battle.
A section dealing with Washington's ownership of slaves, while depicting Washington as a relatively kind slave owner explains the dilemmas Washington faced and his ultimate hypocrisy in keeping slaves. A brief segment on how some planation owners mistreated slaves is particularly harrowing and gruesome at times.
As for sexuality, the book should be rated PG-13 as many of the British officers fall victim to the lovely ladies of Philadelphia.
Overall I highly recommend this book to individuals interested in learning more about George Washington and to young adults who are starting to enter the world of books aimed at mature readers.
Fascinating History.......2003-03-25
I had to write this review because this is a fantastic book and it deserves a better rating than it has. I have read just about all of Marrin's books. He is my favorite author of history books for young adults. The reading style is always appropriate for younger readers (age 12 and up), but usually Marrin's books are too long for this target audience, who often struggle at reading anything that takes more than hour. I've seen kids I tried to get to read this book get turned-off after raising and lowering it a few times to assess its weight. In my view every page of Marrin's "George Washington" is worth reading. Marrin often finds choice excerpts from the primary literature that give you the feeling that you're really getting to know Washington and his times. Disregard the last customer review about inaccuracy. Marrin is a true historian and even if one quote wasn't verbatim, he didn't change its meaning.
I also disagree with the School Library Journal review saying that Milton Meltzer's "George Washington and the Birth of Our Nation" and Mary Pope Osborne's "George Washington: Leader of a New Nation" are equally fine biographies. Marrin has them both beat by miles. The writing is faster paced, the illustrations are better, and the book takes the subject to a greater depth.
Inaccurate.......2003-02-18
This biography is a somewhat dark biography in that it focuses on the problems and not the incredible things that George Washington did. It also contains an inaccurate quote on page 54. The source of the quote is a letter to his brother John, where Washington is describing his incredible escape from an ambush near French-held Fort Duquesne. Every officer was killed and George Washington has 4 bullet holes in his cloak and 2 horses shot out from under him. In "The Writings of George Washington," George states: "But by the all-powerful dispensations of Providence, I have been protected beyond all human probability or expectation; for I had..." and he describes the situation to his brother. Albert Marrin changed this quote in his book to read: "I luckily escaped without a wound though I had..."
Many other books that have been written about George Washington have reduced Washington's quote or left it out altogether since it is a little long for children. But no one has changed it before...that is revisionistic, and unacceptable.
brings Washington to life for young readers.......2002-02-09
I'm using this book, among many others, in a homeschooling course on the American Revolution. There are many good illustrations, the language is simple and unpretentious, and the story is engaging my 13 year old -- in fact, it is often quite gory and graphic in its descriptions of wartime events! Beware if you're squeamish about war. But young lads will love it.

Book Description
In this revelatory and genuinely groundbreaking study, François Furstenberg sheds new light on the genesis of American identity. Immersing us in the publishing culture of the early nineteenth century, he shows us how the words of George Washington and others of his generation became AmericaÂ's sacred scripture and provided the foundation for a new civic cultureÂone whose reconciliation with slavery unleashed consequences that haunt us still. A dazzling work of scholarship from a brilliant young historian, In the Name of the Father is a major contribution to American social history.
Customer Reviews:
A Slave to Text.......2006-08-01
Professor Furstenberg's short book tries to carry too much freight in his attempt to explain Washington's legacy, slavery, and the making of our nation, all in 231 pages.
I do not agree with the basic underpinning of the author's thinking towards the U.S. Constitution or George Washington. He grants little value to either. Somehow reinventing ourselves every generation as Jefferson once advocated would be just the right thing. No matter the current evidence from so many other countries in a difficult world. And, no matter the undoubted problems in obtaining any real consensus on fundamental constitutional change in our modern country of 300 million. In the end, this American professor from his ivory tower in Montreal sees our current population as little better than modern slaves.
Some of this book is very good. Most will enjoy the informative chapter on Parson Weems and the material on early American educational primers.
I urge the author to watch the over use of certain words and phrases when writing his next book. "Civic text" and "didactic", for two examples. Also, "inculcate"-- which popped up six times on one page (p.164.)
An interesting thesis.......2006-07-30
Furnestberg has written an interesting book describing how the worship of George Washington has led to stagnation in American political thinking. According to Furstenberg popular historians in the early nineteenth century depicted Washington as a man of moral self control and artists pictured him as an rock against the revolutionary change that was occurring in Europe. Also Washington was depicted by artists and historians alike as a heavenly being whose words had to be worshipped as a sacred canon. Finally the legacy of Washington and the revolutionary generation helped to legitimize slavery since white Americans were considered to have fought for their freedom as opposed to slaves who were nothing more than passive agents. I would reccomend this book for anyone who wants to see a darker side of this country's fetish with the founding fathers.

A few great entries, but too many average ones.......2000-06-05
This book is just "okay." The book itself is not designed in a way that I find particularly handsome (can a graphic design book be judged by its cover?). Similarly, some of what's inside is not very impressive, but the things that strike me (maybe a quarter of the things in the book) are really great.
Customer Reviews:
Water Quality.......2007-01-12
I look at this book, and I have a lot of fish books, as a handyman's manual. It is good for referencing water conditions and how to correct the most important element of the hobby - water. It goes to great length describing and showing how to correct PH, nitrites, and so forth for optimal water conditions, which is different for each fish. The filtration aspect I found helpful but only to the point of being a beginner. If you want to know what media to use or filter type you might need for your aquarium this is a good source. I would recommend this book.
Customer Reviews:
Needs more info........2006-05-02
I wish now that I did not buy this book, the information is just too general. Basic design and filter sizing are topics that I expected to find in this book.
Good book, will explain the basics .......2005-03-22
Before you can become an expert at anything you need to know the basics. What this book does well is explain aquarium filtration and the equipment involved to those who may have little or no knowledge on this matter. Many aquarist books explain filtration very briefly, often leaving the reader with questions and incomplete information about the process. This book will tell you how and why filtration occurs, and explain various filter products and how they work. Includes filtration suggestions for different tank set-ups, but could have included more. Marine tanks are covered, but I would say that freshwater tanks are more the focus of this book.
an amateur.......2005-02-28
This book describes good filtration systems, some may be considered as old, others too bulky, but what surprised me the most was to find in page 6 referring to nitrite as NO3 and nitrate NO2 (it is nitrite NO2 and nitrate NO3)! After that I took all information with care and check in other book for confirmation. How is it possible for the author to miss this? If you want to see nice photos, fine, but be ware some pages stick together and seem they are going to break, so be careful.
Old Filtration Technics.......2002-08-29
If you are looking for a book to help you understand new filtration methods for your marine aquarium. Do not buy this book. It might work for fresh water tanks.
Very well information.......2000-10-25
This book helps alot for beginners. Filtration is a complex subject for a beginner but with this book you can manage lots of diffucult things. Articles and photos are fine. I recomend this book.

Use of protein skimmers & activated carbon in aquariums. This book discusses the untilization of protein skimming & activated carbon as a means in removing or minimizing accumulating aquarium nutrients.
Customer Reviews:
Good things come in small packages........2001-12-26
Protein skimmers and activated carbon are probably the two most misundsrstood or non-understood factors in all of amateur fishkeeping.
This is not a book, it's a pamphlet. But it's a great value when it comes to the information therein
Excellent info/advice for novice and seasoned SW hobbyists.......2001-07-09
Bob Goemens is a well-known and respected expert in the saltwater aquarium industry for his knowledge and research. This booklet gives some fantastic advice on how to set up and maintain protein skimmers and activated carbon filtration. Goemens presents the information in a very straightforward, easy-to-understand way, providing descriptions and detail without overburdoning the reader with unnecessary terminology. He starts with a brief history of protein skimming, then discusses the verious types of skimmers and how to select the correct one for your system, then continues with detailed information about how to set a skimmer up and maintain it. I found his discussion on foam production and how to maximize it invaluable in making my filtration system at home much more efficient -- and my water is more crystal-clear than ever before as a result! His section on activated carbon is more concise (as there is less to carbon filtration than there is to skimming) but is equally informative. It includes how carbon works, how to select activated carbon and how to maintain it. This is a great reference booklet!
a very good book for the beginner.......2001-03-22
this book is excellent in the details of protein skimming, and what to expect and how to chose the right skimmer for you tank!very very good detalied book
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Concise information that actually works in practice........2005-01-18
When this "book" (it's more a pamphlet) arrived I was very disappointed. It was so short, just 32 pages, a half dozen or so of them are blank, and another sizable section is a reprint of an email sent to the author, I didn't believe it could possibly be worth the asking price. However, for a small investment of a couple of hours, I was able to read the book, and it's description of how to set up a plenum.
The information in the book includes a simple description of how to set up a tank, along with some very complicated chemistry that is very controversial and beyond almost everyone's (or maybe absolutely everyone's) ability to verify except through empirical testing.
So that's what I did. I set up a small 22 gallon tank, along with the plenum described by Bob Goeman, and waited. Almost immediately my protein skimmer broke - no reflection on Bob Goeman - and after about 6 months, my tank is still running trouble free (and protein skimmer free), and almost maintenance free, with nothing but daily feedings, and a monthly 10% water change. I've cleaned the aquarium glass just once. The fish are healthy and content, the inverts are doing fine. I intend to setup every future tank I ever have using this same method. I still feel that $9 for a pamphlet is excessive, but the information with in this pamphlet is priceless, and in the 25 or so aquarium books I've read I haven't seen this information anywhere else.
good stuff.......2003-01-18
Best practical discussion of living sand filtration I've seen. Perhaps one of the best books (on any subject) I've ever read in terms of containing the real "what do I do next Monday morning" specifics.
Keys to Setting up a 21st Century Aquarium.......2002-08-23
I was hooked on aquariums the minute I saw the ones in the jewelry department Barney's 7th Ave. store in Manhattan, with sapphire earrings and diamond bracelets draped underwater over branches of coral with butterfly and angel fish gliding thru. Years and one B.A. later, I bought a used saltwater tank. Who would have guessed you need a PhD in organic chemistry to understand the balance between pH and salinity and the Nitrogen Cycle. Well, if you want a tank like the one in Barneys, you do. And this is the book to begin with. Sure it looks like a tiny pamphlet, but it is practical, concentrated, wonderfully detailed - one of the very few pieces I've found written by someone who clearly knows what he's talking about. I don't have a chemistry background so when Dr. Goemans says things about "the buffering ions that keep the world's oceans in narrow pH range" I am out of my league. But I prefer that to the "Aquariums for Dummies" (do they have one of those yet?) advice that simplifies this hobby by leaving out anything technical. I've had my used aquarium for 2 years now. Fortunately it was set up by someone who wanted a state-of-the-art tank, one that grows into a stable system and needs minimal attention. And so, despite my initial ignorance, my tank was on autopilot while I learned what to do. It wasn't easy. Not a single book in my local library gives any really current information on this subject; that's a problem because scientists have learned so much in the past 10 years about marine fish and environments. I am starting my daughter's new saltwater tank this month, and we can do it right because we have this book in our home reference library: The best sand to use. How to use the first aquarium to seed the new one. Why a tank won't thrive without anaerobic and anoxic (low level oxygen) areas of the sandbed. All in plain English with some biochemistry thrown in. You may not be familiar with all the terms, but with this handy little booklet you won't make mistakes.
Short & to the point........2000-12-08
This book is about constructing live sand / aragonite Plenums in your saltwater / reef tank. Really good explanations about aerobic / non-aerobic bacteria & anoxic. He talks about the efficiency of low oxygen bacteria areas compared to most common set-ups - he claims better efficiency than nature! Other authors do not agree with all of this, but isn't that the way when new emerging technologies take over the "old way of doing business"? This is about the 6'th book I've read since my big saltwater failure and I find this really good information. This author seems to have a different perspective worth reading.
All about the Plenum.......2000-08-04
Real good information on constructing a Jaubert Plenum System, everything from hardware to substrate size. It is also informative on the bilogical cycle and curing of live sand. I recomend this to anyone considering using a Plenum System.
Book Description
This small book is designed to provide the reader with all the essentials of constructing a deep sand filter in a coral reef aquarium.
Customer Reviews:
Could not recomend it.......2005-08-13
I really did not find the small booklet helpful at all. You can get more practical information from other sources.
To much detail... yet not enough detail........2002-03-09
Deep Sand Beds are a pretty new concept out there. I've been reading a lot on the net about it, and got the book thinking that I would really get a lot more practical details out of it so as a marine enthusiast I could put it to work.
Frankly, it has to much details on "infauna" (those critters that live in the sand bed) for the ignorant, but not enough for the really versed. And certainly did not really added a lot to what is already public knowledge.
Product Description
Book explains the different equipment and management required for a marine aquarium in relation to a freshwater aquarium. Being true to its title "for the home aquarist", it also explains different grades of equipment such as filtration and lighting and different levels of expense within the marine aquarium hobby.

I love this book! It has useful information arranged alphabetically: very important for the novice collector. My only complaint is that there is no indication of price ranges, in any currency. Would a companion volume be forthcoming?
It is well-illustrated in both black and white and full-colour photos. Worth owning.

I usually look in the library to see what books I would like to own. Miracle-Gro Guide to Growing Delicious Vegetables Fruits and Herbs is a book I am going to buy. The pictures are large enough to see what a product will look like. The advice is correct as well. I live in Arizona and these authors are aware that most products in Arizona can get badly sunburned in the summer months without shading. I am glad a publcation has finally come that can give good advice.

Plus, there are 700 photos showing all forms of vintage instruments, amps and effects. The Guide combines the most thorough research with an exceptionally user-friendly format that employs quick-find page headings, a comprehensive index, and a dealer directory that puts you just an e-mail or phone call away from guitar buyers and sellers in every region of the country. Also included is an in-depth look at the factors that drive the collectible instrument market, explaining the "hows and whys" in regard to the values of vintage and used equipment.
