    Book Description

Illustrated descriptions of over 250 genera of diatoms are presented for the first time in this wide-ranging volume. The introduction describes the diatom cell in detail, the structure of the wall (often extremely beautiful designs), the cell contents and aspects of life cycle and cell division. The generic atlas section is the first account of diatom systematics since 1928, and each generic description is accompanied by scanning electron micrographs to show the characteristic structure.

5 out of 5 stars Written for amatuers by the pros.......2005-07-28

This book was one of the best I've read on the subject. Keep in mind it focuses on places tourists don't go; so if your headed for Europe this isn't for you. Randall and Perrin are renowned for what they do. Come on they hang out with Robert Pelton so you know they are for real. This book could save your life. Make it required reading for your next trip off the beaten path.

5 out of 5 stars I Used This Book When I Was In The U.S. Marshals Service.......2005-07-24

Prior to my recent retirement from the above agency, I had frequent occasion to familiarize myself with the goings on in the more dangerous parts of the world. And not just to familiarize, but how to survive these parts. Although the U.S. State Department web site has some valuable information, NOBODY had the quality, reality based third world survival oriented information that Jeff Randall does. In fact I purchased one of these books for my office operation. Jeff Randall met an operational training team of mine in Colombia, and I gotta tell you that he made a more favorable impression on them than any of the many Spec Ops types they have met down there. He is truly the real deal.

2 out of 5 stars if there were ANY other book on the topic, I'd never bother .......2004-09-16

This book is only of any value since nobody has any real alternative in finding this type of information elsewhere. The writing is quite poor, the text is disorganized and the authors often foolishly overgeneralize and at times hint at their ignorance of the host countries. Overall this book is a pretty pathetic attempt at a serious guide for travelers outside W.Europe and N.America, but, then again, there are almost no other books on the topic, so it looks like we're stuck with this.

Don't get me wrong, there are some useful tips, but the authors dance around going into detail on articulating a lot of very important points, especially with respect to staying out of trouble, establishing rapport with your hosts, etc, etc. Thus, unfortunately, a lot of the most important topics only receive cursory mention and/or little explanation. Some of the 'tips' aren't even well thought-out. One example comes to mind: "use dog tags on your luggage so you don't have to fill out an ID tag every time you fly. That'd be great if you were going to France or the UK, but if you're trying to get over the Colombian border or whatever, the LAST thing you want on your pack is a set of military dog tags.

If you're going to be traveling in the developing world, and you feel like you absolutely MUST have a book on the subject, you might want to buy this book...used if possible. Mostly though, this information could be gleaned from a couple hours spent on a good web search.

I give it two stars, one of which comes from authoring one of almost no books on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Well written and detailed.......2004-07-14

An amazing book and easy to follow. This book is required reading for anyone who ventures into foreign lands.

I read it twice before my trip to Indonesia and applied the principles while there. It forces you to be more aware of your surroundings and adds a layer of protection for even the most mundane things Americans do while traveling over-seas.

In today's world of kidnapings and terrorism, this book and Robert Pelton's Dangerous Places book are essential tools for the foreign traveler.

I look forward to next book by the authors.

5 out of 5 stars Great study guide.......2004-07-13

for anyone who travels into remote areas of developing countries. this book has been valuable to my work in colombia. highly recommended!

                Book Description

The ideal gift for young horse lovers everywhere: A practical step-by-step guide to the essentials of horse ownership.

Renowned equestrian authority Elwyn Hartley Edwards describes the horse as "the creature that has supported all man's endeavors through his history" in his lavishly illustrated book, The New Rider's Horse Encyclopedia hardcover). Packed with more than 500 photographs, including several state-of-the-art photographic how-to sequences, The New Rider's Horse Encyclopedia serves as a celebration of this beloved and indispensable animal, as well as the definitive reference guide for the horse owner.

Edwards begins at the beginning, tracing the evolution of the horse from a small, multi-toed browsing animal of 60 million years ago to the powerful competition horses of today. He touches on every aspect of horse history, including their impact on legend, literature and art; the contributions of working horses to war, agriculture, and industry; and the many horse-related sports, including racing, steeplechase, hunting, rodeo, polo and more. Along the way Edwards celebrates the world's most famous horse heroes and amazing equestrian feats.

In addition, he provides a complete catalog of all the major horse and pony breeds, from the tiny Falabellas of Argentina to the giant Shires of England. He offers instruction on the proper selection and maintenance of tack and equipment, and a complete guide to owning a horse, including selecting the right horse, feeding, grooming, exercise, handling, health issues, and more.

A bonus is Edwards's unique ten-lesson riding course that teaches the fundamentals, from mounting for the first time to cross-country riding and combination jumps.

1 out of 5 stars If only the author was actually a collector..........1999-04-05

The prices listed in this book were not even accurate in 1995, so why should they even be close now?? The author was obviously not an actual yo-yo or spin top collector, and it really shows all through the book. They actually took a picture and listed a price for half of a Duncan Twin Spin. Not the whole top, just part of it. Didn't even seem to know what it was, either. If you are buying tops or yo-yos, and someone quotes prices from that book, run away.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for top collectors.......1999-02-28

This book is an excellent picture resource as well as a price guide. It cover tops and Yo Yos which are devided into collectors sections. It is strong on Advertising tops but rather weak in the area of the really old tops (say pre 1930) This is not the fault of the book, as one presumes that few really old tops come on to the market. It is a must for any top collector considering the paucilty of books on this tiopic.

                    Book Description

Ecological planning is the process of understanding, evaluating, and providing options for the use of landscape to ensure a better fit with human habitation. In this ambitious analysis, Forster Ndubisi provides a succinct historical and comparative account of the various approaches to this process. He then reveals how each of these approaches offers different and uniquely useful perspectives for understanding the dialogue between human and environmental processes.

Ndubisi begins by examining the philosophies behind and major contributors to ecological thinking during the past 150 years, as well as the paradigm shift in planning that occurred in recent decades as a result of a growing global ecological awareness. He then turns to landscape suitability analysis and discusses alternative approaches to ecological planning, such as applied human ecology, applied landscape ecology, and others. Finally, he offers a comparative synthesis of the approaches in order to reveal the theoretical and methodological assumptions inherent when planners choose one approach over the other. Ndubisi concludes that no one approach can by itself adequately address the whole spectrum of ecological planning issues. For this reason he offers guidance as to when it may be appropriate for landscape architects and planners to emphasize one approach rather than another.

                          Book Description

Caligula would have understood the depraved decadence and desperate frenzy of spring break - American teens' annual pilgrimage to shimmering shores, where sex on the beach is as much an afternoon activity as it is a fruity cocktail. A festival of sun and sin, of tanned flesh and binge drinking, spring break attracts thousands of high school and college students, who wash up on Florida's shores like schools of breeding salmon, ready to indulge their insatiable apetites and hedonistic desires with total strangers. A native Floridian, photographer Nathaniel Welch has been documenting these rites of passage for four years - and has captured scenes of agony and ecstasy in Spring Broke, his first monograph. Whether it's partying at a kegger on the beach or engaging in group sex in the shower, entering a wet T-Shirt contest or passing out on the bathroom floor, these teens' uninhibited impulses are as absurd as they are disturbing. Yet Welch accepts, and even embraces, these raunchy rituals of extreme adolescence, alloing a strange sense of sadness to pervade. The morning after, broken spirits are left to reflect on their senseless acts, pack their bags, and head home.

5 out of 5 stars whistful and disturbing.......2005-03-11

Despite its title, this is not a "girls gone wild" in hardcover, but rather a series of thoughtful portraits about the desperate and sad reality behind the drunken revelry of spring break. Welch's photos are stark and honest without being lurid or judgmental. The book really captures the whole profane youth culture that is informed more by beer ads and porn films than anything else. Welch is a top-flight photographer and this book highlights his talents to a great degree.

                          1 out of 5 stars "Higher" Education.......2004-11-15

Might be a usefull book if you are a parent trying to get your kid into re-hab, othewise... don't bother. Not worth the trouble, and a rather sad commentary on "higher" education.

5 out of 5 stars Larry Clark + Where the Boys Are.......2004-08-07

What's happening to the youth of today? Well, number one, they're having a hell of a lot of fun and you can see the results in Nathaniel Welch's book SPRING BROKE.

One girl has a T shirt that says, "I'm not an alcoholic, I'm a drunk. Alcoholics go to meetings." She looks a bit like the very young Cybill Shepherd, with Shepherd's cockeyed superiority, as though she were in on the joke, even if the joke was on her. Welch is a fine photographer and one wonders how he got releases from some of his subjects, especially the two boys and three girls he photographs making out in the shower. The girls are wearing thongs, I guess to preserve decency, but the one boy's just wearing a backwards baseball cap. When they're US Senators will they be trying to suppress these photos? Who can tell, in another twenty years spring break may be happening all year round and maybe even in the senate chamber.

The funniest photo may be the one of the tiny hotel refrigerator completely filled with alcohol, beer and mixers. You couldn't even fit in a radish if you wanted to.

Potentially an incendiary book, SPRING BROKE plays it cool and doesn't take sides. You have the feeling that Welch, who must be nearly forty by now, has a true love for these kids akin to Larry Clark's. Good work all around.

                          1 out of 5 stars A Very Lame Book.......2004-06-02

This is a book of pictures of jocks and women who dig them, getting hammered.

"Yet Welch accepts, and even embraces, these raunchy rituals of extreme adolescence, alloing [sic] a strange sense of sadness to pervade. The morning after, broken spirits are left to reflect on their senseless acts, pack their bags, and head home.

...yeah, right. So why on earth would anyone want a book full of this? "Strange sense of sadness..." sounds like a fancy term for pathetic.

Don't waste your money on this book.

                                  Book Description

Considered an authentic account of the historical roots of the Tiananmen Square events, Wang Fan-hsi's autobiography, Memoirs of a Chinese Revolutionary, documents events in China for the years 1919 to 1949, and the fate of those who dared challenge the rule of the Chinese Communist Party. Wang participated in the Chinese student movement of his youth, escaped from Kuomintang jailers in 1927, and fled to Moscow. There he discovered Trotsky, was eventually expelled from the Chinese Communist Party for being a Trotskyite, and spent six years in jail.

The original publication of Wang's autobiography in 1950 consisted of only twenty mimeographed copies, to be read chiefly by those Trotskyites who had survived Mau Tse-tung's rise to power. Since then, it has been published in Japanese, French, German, and English. For this second English edition, the author has written a new preface, translator Gregor Benton has revised and updated his introduction, and material cut from the first English edition has been restored. Memoirs of a Chinese Revolutionary is an extremely important document about past events in China by someone who was there, on the inside.
