    Book Description

This definitive work, the result of two lifetimes of experimentation and research, provides a much-needed reference to all the genera and species of fruit trees and edible flowering plants cultivable in Egypt and other countries of the subtropics. In the first part of the book the authors introduce the reader to the general conditions relating to the cultivation of edible plants, such as the nature of the soil, irrigation, and the struggle against pests and diseases. The second part, which forms the bulk of the book, consists of an exhaustive alphabetical descriptive catalog of more than 9,000 genera and species, based on first-hand experimental data and illustrated with line drawings. The final part of the book contains an analytical index of genera (by type and use) and a comprehensive key of over 6,000 common plant names.

    Book Description

These stories of travel in Central America — Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama — are adventurous and quirky, sobering and enlightening. Readers visit a Panamanian island known for its wildlife; glimpse the wealthy Generation X repatriates of Nicaragua; and meet a charming Guatemalan revolutionary. Authors include Paul Theroux, Jennifer Harbury, Ronald Wright, Joan Didion, Randy Wayne White, and Rigoberta Menchu. Travelers’ Tales Central America provides a new window into this astonishingly beautiful and complex part of the world. “For the thoughtful traveler, these books are an invaluable resource.” — Pico Iyer

4 out of 5 stars An exceptionally well-crafted collection impressions of Latin America.......2005-09-12

I am not a huge fan of anthologies of articles because they often lack the narrative flow and coherence of a book written by a single author. With that being said, Traveler's Tales Central America is a cut above the standard anthology for several reasons. First, the articles focus on a single, relatively small geographic region-Central America (Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama). The narrow geography of Latin America bind the stories together much better than say, the stories in the Best American Travel Writing series, which cover all corners of the globe.

Second, many of the articles did not appear in mainstream travel magazines such as Conde Nast Traveler, Travel and Leisure, Budget Travel, etc. Instead, Larry Habegger and Natanya Pearlman, the book's editors, have gone out of the way to find some interesting pieces written by relatively obscure authors.

One of my favorites is a retired Pan Am pilot named Joseph Diedrich who writes about an encounter at a hotel with a beautiful woman who enjoys smuggling jaguars to the United States from Guatemala simply for the thrill of it. Another memorable one, "The Rainbow Special" by Cara Tabachnick, describes a hilarious gathering of hippies on the shores of Lago Atitlán in Guatemala where everyone finds spiritual truth in a simple bowl of hummus soup.

In addition to some obscure gems, Traveler's Tales Central America also includes pieces written by writers at the top of their game such as Tim Cahill and Paul Theroux. Cahill's essay about a drive in Honduras is ho hum, but Theroux's chronicle of a train ride through Costa Rica ranks as one of the best articles in the book, especially since the train he took no longer exists.

Traveler's Tales Central America ends with some stories that still haunt me. Jennifer K. Harbury tells the story of her first encounter in the rugged mountains of Guatemala with her husband Everado, a guerilla who was ultimately abducted and murdered by the CIA. In "Deceptive Moonrise," a female backpacker reveals how a tropical paradise became a nightmare one night on an island off the coast of Belize. Traveler's Tales Central America, in short, is not just fodder for readers with short attention spans, but an exceptionally well-crafted collection impressions of a region of the world close in proximity to the United States but culturally very distant. I can't wait until the publisher comes out with a similar book for South America.

5 out of 5 stars This is a helpful guide to raising young "FLOOFIES".......2003-03-10

When I rescued an abandoned kitten from the yard of a friend who was moving (during the moving process, the mom left him behind), I had no idea where to begin. I called the local pet store for advice and they told me what kind of kitten formula to feed him since he was only about 3 weeks old at the time, but they gave little advice on any other care. This book helped show me how to keep him clean, how often to feed him, housebreaking tips and so forth. I recommend it to anyone inheriting a new "baby" Floofie into the family.

4 out of 5 stars very helpful book.......2003-01-21

My mother and I have really enjoyed the book. We've gone back to it many times. It gave us lots of good advice for fostering kittens for our local Humane Society. It doesn't cover everything, but it gives the basics to begin. When kittens get sick, you need more information than the book says, but it's on the Internet.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Money........2002-12-15

I was very disappointed by this book. It tells you that you "should" or "shouldn't" do things, but doesn't tell you how.

My orphan was 5 days old when I found him. He does not remember his mother or siblings. As a result, he lacks social skills. I purchased this book to find out how to compensate because it has become a problem. The book says that socialization is a problem.

        Well a big fat "duh!"

The authors may have chosen great photos, but their exertise with orphan kittens leaves a lot to be desired.

3 out of 5 stars Mostly good guide.......2002-01-05

I have hand-raised over 100 orphaned kittens over the last seven years for the humane society where I volunteer, and am the former manager of it's temporary home care program where we care for an average of 300 orphaned kittens every year. I like some parts of this book very much but I can only recommend it with reservation. Especially good is the information on: 1) bedding materials (I liked her admonition that you want to keep the kittens warm, "not cook them"); 2) how to feed kittens from a bottle; 3) commercial and home-made milk substitutes; 4) kitten illnesses and disorders; 5) early spay-neuter of young kittens; 6) zoonosis (ie, the diseases and parasites cats and humans can transmit to each other); and 7) the terrible problem of cat overpopulation that exists today.

The parts I find troubling begin with the author's suggestion that someone with orphaned kittens first attempt to find a mother cat to care for them. Dr Papurt is concerned about diseases or parasites the stepmother might pass to the kittens but doesn't mention the fact that you may be putting the mom cat at risk for contamination by the kittens, especially if you found or were given the kittens and don't know anything about their medical history. I speak from experience -- after several success stories of adding orphans to the litters of other mother cats, I gave three orphans to a four year-old mom with one kitten of her own. We knew the history of the mother cat -- she had been an inside cat, she and her kitten had been given up for adoption after their owner died. But we knew nothing about the orphaned kittens who had been found on a farm. Within two weeks, all of the animals were dead of feline panleukopenia, spread from the orphans to the mom cat and her kitten.

The biggest problem I have with the book, however, is Dr Papurt's suggestion that kittens be separated from the time they are born until they are weaned six or seven weeks later. Her reasoning for this is that unless they are kept isolated from one another, infant kittens will chew or suck on each other's ears, tails, paws or genitals. In my experience, not only is this reaction very rare, but of the nine or ten cases I've seen of this behavior, all but two were directly attributable to the kittens being underfed (the isolated cases were two "neurotic" kittens that continued this behavior through the time they were adopted at the age of four months). I think baby kittens need to be together, they keep each other warm and they enhance each other's sense of safety and well-being. A kitten that feels isolated or abandoned will rapidly become unhappy and agitated, crying loudly for it's mother. Furthermore, older kittens must have contact with their littermates in order to become properly socialized with other cats plus they need to play with each other in order to develop motor skills.

I also found Dr Papurt's suggestion that you can mark the kittens with "ink, paint or nail polish" or cut their hair in various patterns after they are weaned and put with their siblings in order to tell them apart to be just plain bizarre. It can be difficult to tell infant all-black or all-white kittens apart but after a few weeks, differences in size, demeanor and face are usually apparent, as is the sex of the kitten. (...)

5 out of 5 stars Saved By the Book!.......2001-12-03

As a foster mom in a local humane society, I took in a small, scrawny, crippled and very pregnant kitty. She hardly looked old enough to be out of kittenhood, herself. When her eight (yes, eight!) kittens were born, I knew I would have to watch closely in order to save them all. One gray tabby lay on his side, quiet and cool to the touch. I grabbed "Hand Raising the Orphaned Kitten" and quickly learned that the kitten needed a sucrose solution immediately. Reacting as quickly as possible, I mixed a solution of water and white syrup in a glass and gently fed it to the kitten with an eye dropper. Within half an hour, the kitten was less dehydrated and had higher blood sugar. Soon he began to search for his mother, strong enough now to compete for a place at the dinner table. Two months later, little Julius and his seven siblings are alive and thriving, thanks to the valuable information contained in this book. The text is simply written, understandable to the layman and easily applied. Even though Julius and his siblings were not completely hand raised, I supplemented their nursing with bottle feedings for six weeks, according to careful instructions in this book. I am certain Julius would not have survived if I had not read the information in M. L. Papurt's wonderful book!

There's no perennial question too basic to ask this book. Maybe you've gardened here and there, but are looking to add a new flowerbed. Or maybe you're tired of the plants you've got that are looking so... tired. In Perennials for Dummies, you can start fresh, with proper plant choices and correct care, and have a lush and blooming garden sooner than you might expect. Choosing the right plants can be annoying if you don't really know what zone means, and the first section of this book is devoted to explaining not just the meaning of zone, but also specific growing conditions for precise regions. High-altitude desert, subtropical swamp, or Pacific Coast--each is detailed with helpful information. The section on planning for your style and color choices is also helpful, and geared toward attractive and low-maintenance choices.

The big downside to this book is its lack of pictures. There are lots of line drawings, but they tend to show particular stages of a process rather than each step. Color photos are limited to one section, and since the plant photos are separate from the descriptions, they don't add much value to the book. With bullet-point lists, icons for highlighting categories like "ecofriendly" or "time-saving," and simple tables and charts, how-to photos aren't essential. For folks who learn best with straightforward reading, the presentation won't be an issue, but if pictorial aids are what you need for learning, look elsewhere. --Jill Lightner

I'm a beginner gardener who wanted to plant flower bulbs. This book told me that I had to amend the soil, fertilize, and mulch all essential if you want to a great flower garden. They even have top ten lists including the most fragrant flowers.

4 out of 5 stars It may not bee nice to fool Mother Nature........2001-01-04

But no one said you could not second-guess. Well after two warmer then usual winters I decided not to take any chances with my new raised garden. I purchased "Perennials for Dummies." Chapter four is all on winter proof flowerbeds. I had more in mind herbs. They were covered also. According to the book snow is an insulator and necessary to protect from the constant air temperature fluctuations. Now as I am watching the snow (through the window) I am snickering as I hear the plants saying, "I'll be back"

4 out of 5 stars it will give every gardeners answers to their question.......1998-08-06

I love gardening. If I am not in the garden working, my hand will be holding a book or a magazine on flowers. It's my seventh house and each time we moved I started all over again. But this time we moved south. Different climat, different soil, everything is different. Perennials gardening is still very new to South Carolina. I didn't have too much help from my neighboors or even the nurseries. I was crying for help until I found perennials for dummies. I am now redoing the first bed that I did when I moved here following their instructions on the preparation of the soil and the best type of plants to use for this torrid, humid weather with mild winter. I recommend that book for any beginner and good gardeners. You will always find a new tips or answers to your questions and on top of that they are funny.

Expecting a book on technique, I was hugely dissapointed! Turns out the book is merely a collection of brief, general descriptions of lazzi. The Commedia character overviews also included in the book were, for my purposes, useless. The book contributes nothing new to the world of Commedia Dell'Arte. What I do find of value are the two Commedia scripts included in the book. Save your money, there are other books worth their weight in gold on the subject of Commedia Dell'Arte

                5 out of 5 stars I laughed out loud!.......2000-02-08

Of all the books out there concerning commedia dell'arte, I found this one to be one of the most informative and useful (and definitely the FUNNIEST!--and isn't that the point?). Mel Gordon clearly and concisely defines what lazzi are, and presents a series of them according to type; quite appropriate, considering commedia performers often kept notebooks full of such routines. One discovers that comedy has not really changed over the centuries. Perusal of these routines brings the tradition of commedia dell'arte to life in a way that hours of poring over Flaminio Scala's work can not. A must for any student of the Italian comedy!

page 144, 1977 reprint. Picture caption: "The walnut harvest in the Dordogne in southwestern France. Nuts are beaten from the trees with long poles. There is an ancient saying that walnuts, dogs, and w*m*n are all improved by a good beating from time to time." yeah he really spelt it "w*m*n" with the stars.

The book is a tree dictionary + alot of info a gardener might need, like times of year of tree flowering, hardiness maps, etc. So you can probably find that stuff in another book, if you want to, and avoid the "weirdo factor" of this book.

                    Book Description

Estonia's capital is a wonderful city steeped in tradition and history. Having been part of Soviet Russia until the early 1990s, today it is a fascinating mix of communities and attitudes. Like most post-Communist countries they have embraced technology and style and have grown rapidly, creating a new elite. Tallinn has an eclectic restaurant and bar scene, mixing Scandinavian modernism with Baltic tradition. The hotel selection is improving but stay in simple artisans quarters, old Communist villas or converted Hanseatic townhouses.

                      Book Description

From an early age, Suzi Newborn chose a life of environmental activism, which put her in the heart of the Greenpeace phenomenon, on speaking terms with rock stars and celebrities, and made her the confidante of Spike Milligan.

She was there on the Arctic ice floes, preventing sealers from bludgeoning baby seals; she rode Zodiacs between the whalers' harpoons and the whales; and she signed the check that purchased the ill-fated Rainbow Warrior, of which she was one of the original crew.

A Bonfire in My Mouth provides a fascinating picture of the birth of Greenpeace, as well as being a powerful, passionate and revealing autobiography of a strong, resourceful and incredible woman, who has lived on the edge and put her body on the line for her beliefs.

                      Book Description

Smokescreen is a riveting true-life tale of a brilliant undercover agent who infiltrated the world of organized crime. Tall, handsome, larger-than-life Cal Broeker was a successful businessman with a wife and two kids, respected in his upstate New York community. When he discovered that his business partners in Montreal were linked to organized crime, Broeker's life — and reputation — went into a tailspin. To regain his good name, Broeker became an undercover agent for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Neither a cop nor an informer, Broeker was able through a combination of personal charisma and situational savvy to go further undercover than any law enforcement agent. He penetrated into the heart of biker gangs, drug cartels, Mohawk smuggling operations, and the Russian mafia.

Collaboratively written by Paul William Roberts and Norman Snider, Smokescreen: One Man Against The Underworld is the true story Carl Broeker, an ordinary businessman who was betrayed by his partner and forced to confront a deadly, blacklist world of organized crime and illicit trafficking. Drawn into undercover work with the Secret Service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Broeker found himself caught up in a deadly thrill ride of lies, deceits, crime in this compelling biographical narrative of international crime lords, illegal smuggling operations, and political corruption. Smokescreen strips away the subterfuge and lays bare the heretofore murky underworld or organized crime on both sides of the Canadian/American border.

BEGIN A NEW LIFE: ADOPT A PET TODAY!

A New Life: My Pet's Adoption helps pet owners keep track of their pets' changes, and is designed for pets both young and old. Whether you adopt a pet from their first stage of life or find that one of a kind stray you couldn't say no to, this book will help you cherish every memory. You will enjoy looking back at their favorite toys, how they got their name, and even where they love to sleep and cuddle. This is the era of pet humanization and studies have shown the benefits of human pet animal bonding.

Pets are now used in programs to help with abused children, speech therapy and improving the quality of our lives. This book helps bring these new therapeutic affects into homes across the nation. Readers will now have a constant access to memories of laughter and unconditional love. In addition to bringing our pets closer to our families, the book also encourages the completion of the circle between the pet, family and the vet. As Meagan suggests, "Use this book to have fun and enjoy life with your new companion!"

                                  Book Description

Frank O'Hara called him, in a memorable poem, the "balayeur des artistes," the sweeper-up of artists. For over fifty years Irving Sandler has been a vital presence in the New York art world. He has been a friend or acquaintance of virtually every important American artist of the postwar period, and his art criticism and books constitute the first and most comprehensive critical and historical account of this extraordinary period. There is no one else whose personal chronicle is also the living memory of the New York art world, from abstract expressionism to the present day.

Beginning in 1952, Sandler became "New York schooled...receiving my art education at artists' lofts, the Tanager and other Tenth Street cooperatives, the Cedar St. Tavern, and The Club." At all of these "schools" Sandler experienced firsthand the lives of great artists and the making of great art. His memoir captures the anguished intensity of the period, with World War II an immediate memory and the imminence of nuclear disaster an everyday presence.

Here are striking encounters with Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Ad Reinhardt, Barnett Newman, and David Smith. He was also a witness to, and sometime participant in, the heated critical warfare between Clement Greenberg and Harold Rosenberg. We watch the first generation of abstract expressionists give way to a second, and see that in turn succeeded by the artists of the 1960s—Stella, Rauschenberg, and Johns—to be followed by pop and minimalism. At every turn, there was Irving Sandler, intimately conversant with the art and the artists.

In this vivid memoir, critical judgments and personal experience are uniquely intertwined. Readers will be captivated by the intelligence, the unassuming confidence, and the sheer personableness that have kept Sandler at the center of the art world for half a century. 20 illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Mandatory for the Modern Art enthusiast.......2004-05-31

Irving Sandler is one of the few critics who wrote on the abstract expressionists and then went on to write on art made after 1958. He is the best example for young scholars because of his openness to new art, no matter how challenging. For young scholars interested in postwar art, here is a person who lived through it. His belief in the necessariness of government funding for difficult and controversial art is an excellent prescription for the existence of art in the social sphere, no matter how troubled the times may be. I would recommend that the reader consult his other books before tackling his memoirs, because this volume reads as a nice behind the scenes take on his experiences in the artworld. Sandler's outlook on art is essential for the young scholar. Art for him does not necessarily have to challenge or shock, but work that does not sit well still requires attention. With the over-specialization that plagues the field of art historical scholarship, Sandler offers a nice example for those who like art from more than one decade. Along with other writers, he inspired me to be an art historian, and his outlook towards art in general helps inform my day to day thoughts on contemporary art, with its rapidly changing discourse and innumerable talents. Thanks for all your great work, Professor Sandler!
