Book Description
More than 500 species of northeastern and central North American ferns are described and illustrated, with helpful details such as color, leaf shapes, measurements, and root forms. An illustrated key aids in quick identification.
Customer Reviews:
Does a good job of covering a limited scope.......2000-10-24
I have found this field guide to be very useful, though frustratingly limited in scope. The illustrations and diagnostic data are very nice, though somewhat limited - for example, immature frond forms (when different from mature) and unique fiddlehead forms are not shown. On the plus side, this guide covers fern allies such as club mosses. Also, don't let the black-and-white illustrations put you off, they carry more useful information than color photos (of which there are some) of a fern would. My most serious beef with this field guide is that it ignores ferns which are marginally hardy or hardy only in the warmer areas of Northeast and Central North America. Don't expect to find information on Thelypteris kunthii, for example. Final analysis: If you are willing to accept its limitations, you will find this guide to be very useful.
Good pocket field guide for the amateur field bontonist.......2000-08-10
The black and white pen and ink illustrations in this field guide are excellent. Like all Peterson Field Guides, the book begins with a short description of ferns in general and a brief glossary of taxonomic terms particular to ferns. The book is arranged (somewhat frustratingly so for the more experienced Field Botonist) by major plant characterstic. The taxonomic keys are sparce and generally ineffective. Each species identified in the book has a detailed drawing and a description written in easy to understand language. These descriptions include the principle defining characterstics of each fern, and a description of its habit.
The book lacks a information about each ferns geographic distribution and prominance. This sometime leads the amatuer to mis-identifying the sometime confusingly similar fern species.
This book comes in true field guide size. It is light and compact and easily taken to the field. Dispite its weaknesses, I still take it to the field when I go somewhere outside the mid Atlantic after even after six years of wetland delineation field work.

Customer Reviews:
Disorganized.......2002-11-16
I found this book difficult to use. The descriptions of city sites are sorted alphabetically. Therefore, you have to know the name of a specific site in the correct language to find a description. If you don't speak Polish, Hungarian, etc, it's difficult to find what you're looking for. There are only a few maps of major cities in the guide and therefore it's difficult to find any locations outside of the major cities. This book does provide some decent descriptions of restaurants. The upside to the book is that it is the only one that I've found that covers such a diverse group of countries. I just wish that it was organized better and that it had more maps.
A Useful Guide?!? What a Joke!.......1999-10-14
Unfortunately, Fodor's chooses to flatter sites/hotels/restaurants that are not even worthwhile in this adjective-laced and over-priced guide. Many of the "magnificent," "remarkable," and/or "extraordinary" sites mentioned in this guide were far from it. It lacks any candor or frank descriptions. That's not all, it gives no directions to hotels or restaurants and once again describes substandard food as "wonderful." I am also curious to know where these rocket scientists came up with their definitions of nice, clean and exciting. The book is a bust, go with another guide, it was a waste of my money. If it could get 0 stars -- it would.
an essential guide for any traveler to eastern Europe.......1998-12-28
The chapter authors are obviously well-acquainted with the areas they cover. They have done a very good job supplying tips for the traveler. The writing is lucid, and the compilation reader-friendly, evincing a masterful job by the editor(s) in revising and coalescing the material.

The construction of the tunnel running below the English Channel--popularly known as the Chunnel--may be one of the most remarkable examples of human engineering on the planet, a 1990s version of the Panama Canal, or a transcontinental railroad beneath the waves. The idea of a tunnel connecting England and France had been around for many generations before the technological know-how and monetary muscle combined to make the project possible in the late 20th century. Drew Fetherston, an experienced business reporter, tells the story of the Chunnel's incredible construction and disastrous financing. The political and economic struggle to build are fascinating, and readers who fondly remember playing with Tonka trucks will enjoy the pictures of the massive tunnel boring machines that did much of the hard work.
Customer Reviews:
Not the type of history I usually look for..........2006-02-02
This book was obviously written by and for people in business. The reason I even looked at it was because my father worked for one of the major engineering companies involved in it, Bechtel. He also worked for Bechtel on the rather large catastrophe which is the highway under Boston. I think he liked the Chunnel better, though I am not sure how much he actually had to do with it. But he was and is proud of his participation with both this project and many of the fine project Bechtel has been involved with over the years as an engineer.
I read the parts that interested me, and skimmed over the rest. It's very dryly written. Definitely for the business inclined, and not the scientifically-inclined like me. I will continue to look for books on this topic that are more history and scientifically-written. Fetherston did include a few interesting historical pictures and photographs. It would be interesting to know what the British and the french think of this project 50 years from now. As an American, I wish the best for both countries in this endeavor...

Interesting Story but a Confusing Telling.......2002-01-11
Fetherson delivers the history of the chunnel from the earliest days of wishful thinking to its completion. He covers both the engineering and the politics of this great project. I was fascinated by the engineering but depressed by the politics. Unfortunately, there were so many people mentioned in the book that I could not remember all of them which greatly detracted from my ability to understand all the machinations.
Incredible feats of business and engineering.......2001-10-22
When great men set out to do great things few people ever understand the logistical or financial wranglings that have to occur for that great thing to ever exist. What I like about this book is that it delves into the herculean task (engineering and sheer muscle power) involved in digging under the channel as well as the political and financial tasks that were no less daunting. We need to understand that part of history as well. While often less "interesting" than the battle, the logistical efforts involved behind the scenes of any great engagement are often the least understood but truly the most important.
5 star.......2001-10-18
I like this book I give it a 5 star rating because i like this book alot to I think you will like thes book becase I liked it and I like alot of books
Overwrought with financial details.......2000-02-26
When I bought the book I was hoping this would be another classic like the Great Bridge by David McCullough. No way. It's a shame too as the Chunnel project was as great an engineering feat for our time as the Brooklyn Bridge was in its. The book, for me, was overwhelming in its details of who did what when, and mostly then it focusses primarily on the financial and political aspects of the project. It might make a good reference book, but unless your hobby is financing mammoth engineering projects, it is pretty grim.
The Chunnel has to be one of the most interesting and exciting engineering projects of the second half of the 20th Century and here it is just one big yawn.
David McCullough, we have a new project for you.
Book Description
Book About Design: Complicated Doesn't Make It Good takes a most creative approach to introducing young (and not-so-young) readers to the fundamental elements of design. Using simple shapes, lines, and a sense of humor, this book explains why complicated doesn't make it good-and why that matters. Mark Gonyea opens up the world of design and makes it accessible to young artists and nonartists alike.

A Book Aout Design: Complicated Doesn't Make It Good.......2006-11-07
This is a great book to teach basic principles of design in a simple, yet understandable way. It can teach ages from kindergarten to adult. I wish every elementary classroom could have a copy to help kids with their art projects!
AMAZING BOOK!.......2006-08-31
This is the best design book I ever read! I stumbled across it at our public library last year... I knew right away it was a book I had to add to my collection! I'm an elementary and middle school art teacher, and I plan to use this book with several of my classes... including my 6th grade in middle school! The book breaks down the rules of creating a good design and a balanced composition so simply, step by step... all of my kids will be able to follow it. With only a few words per page, Gonyea uses the simple illustrations to really get his point across. Most illustrations are simple shapes and colors. At the end of the book he brings together all the elements mentioned earlier and illustrates how all the elements work together to create a balanced composition. This is a must have... great gift even for first year art majors!
More than laughs.......2006-03-10
This is an entertainng and deceptively simple presentation of the principles that can be useful for adults as well as for children.
I purchased this book along with Molly Bang's "Picture This" to use as a review of design principles for my college class in research for stage scenic design. The class is concerned primarily with research and not design itself. I was looking for a way to summarize design principles since the course considers design only indirectly. I thought that I would read these two books in one class period in the same way that librarians read picture books to grade school children.
My class loved the book as I read it to them. They laughed and I learned something too. They said that they would never forget the 1-3-9 ratio which is repeated throught the book as a useful graphic tool. They had a good time and their design projects improved.
I am waiting for Gonyea's next book because inspite of the fact that "complicated doesen't make it good", I am still looking for a little more 'complicated'.
The perfect gift for the budding designer.......2005-11-08
Not often does one come across a great new design book that would be the perfect holiday, or birthday, gift for your kids, nieces, nephews, grandkids or that creative kid of any age you may know. That book is A Book About Design: Complicated Doesn't Make it Good by designer Mark Gonyea. With its bright colors, simple design and easy-to-read text this book would be great for the young artist/designer in your life - especially those of grade school age. Basic principles of design - often forgotten by many in the profession - are presented in a very entertaining manner. I'll be ordering copies for some of the budding designers I know, as well as some of the seasoned pros who will appreciate getting this book in the spirit of the holiday season. What a fun book! - Jeff Fisher, writer of bLog-oMotives and the "Logo Notions" column at CreativeLatitude.com
Bright and Basic.......2005-08-09
A Book About Design by Mark Gonyea is an attractive, very clearly illustrated quick introduction to some principles of design. A glance at the illustrations would lead one to believe it was a book for young children, however the text, though brief, utilizes vocabulary (intersect, aggressive) and concepts, like ratios, more suitable for older children or adults. I intend to use the book as a quick introduction/ illustration for design concepts with middle school and high school students and think it will work well for that, but if one is looking for in depth discussion, for older students, or suitable vocabulary for younger, this might not be your best bet.

Customer Reviews:
very helpful.......2007-09-14
I purchased this book after getting my first boxer. It is a very good book for the new boxer owner. I wish I would have had this book before getting my boxer- it would have been helpful when interviewing the breeder. It would also be very helpful for those who have not researched the boxer before. I did not give it 5 stars only because a lot of the information was basic dog information - education on training techniques and caring for a dog. But if you are new to owning a dog or haven't had a new puppy in a while, it would be very helpful. The information is all accurate and educational and is a good review for any dog owner.
The One Must-Have Guide for Boxer Owners.......2006-07-06
If you are a new, or even a not-so-new family member of a boxer, you will learn a lot from this book. Karla Spitzer is experienced with this breed and does a great job explaining in clear terms how to make a good life for your boxer, whether you have acquired a pup or perhaps an older rescued boxer. How I wish I had this book when our first boxer, a rescued stray, came into our lives. Sadly there are many people who bring home a boxer but are not aware of some of the special medical issues to be on the alert for and some of the special needs of the boxer as a member of your pack. With a guide like this you will have a much better experience and your boxer will be happier and healthier.

Fire in Sierra Nevada Forests examines the woodlands through repeat photography: rephotographing sites depicted in historical photographs to compare past vegetation to present.
Customer Reviews:
Fire in Sierra Nevada Forests.......2007-01-03
If you are interested in the history of the forests in the Sierras and also how past practices managed the forests better than we are doing now, this is a book of photographs for you. It is a basis for the new proposed forest practice of letting the fires burn to get rid of the underbrush and fire ladders. It also benefits the animals.
A One-of-a-Kind Book About Forest Ecology.......2006-05-07
Forest ecology is in its infancy. Since humans have been messing with forests by chopping trees since their evolutionary arrival on the planet, it is rare to have any forest available to serve as a "before and after" example of human impact. With the Sierra Nevada, we do have photographic data available on the impact of European man on them thanks to those early pioneers of photography who hiked the mountains and photographed them.
George Gruell has done a lot of leg work here to bring many examples of Sierra Nevada forests in photographs from the past 150 years or so of human impact, and compared them to recent shots he took from as close to the origial location of the shot taken by the original photographer. These are presented side by side to give the reader a nice comparision. In this way, one is able to visually compare the forest from say 100 years ago to today. The images are startling.
For example; his photos prove that there really are a lot more trees living today than there were when Europeans first entered the Sierra Nevada. Probably, this is because of fire suppression as well as early loggers having removed a lot of the big old growth stands. Even the famed floor of Yosemite is now mostly forested with conifers. I myself love conifers but George makes an interesting point that these forests are "man made" and in many ways are unhealthy from the standpoint that they lead to canopy firestorms that normally don't exsist when fires are allowed to naturally burn themselves out. Fire ecology is important and our fear of forest fires has led to an ever worsening situation in the Sierra Nevada.
I recommend a quick read through this book for anyone interested in Sierra Nevada forest ecology.
Wonderful photos.......2006-04-06
I found this book most interesting just because of the old photos. While you do look at the then and now shots and see how much has changed, it seems like most of the changes don't have a lot to do with fire. Most of the old photos were taking from development locations, be they mining operations, railroad construction, or town development. So when compared to the current photos the manmade destruction of the land is long gone. It is amaizng to see how the land will return to its wilderness origins once the hands of man are taken away.
Facts over rhetoric.......2002-08-28
With Bush touring the West talking about logging as the solution to preventing ever larger forest fires, this book provides ample documentation that FIRE SUPRESSION and MONOCULTURE REPLANTING are the real causes of the current explosive environment.
I first saw this book at the top of Mt. Harkness. The fire watchman there pointed it out to me, as we both struggled to peer at Mt. Shasta through the smoky haze created by the Biscuit and Fremont fires.
The differences in the trees and ground cover between now and the last century is striking. Most of the photos taken in the late 1800's show trees devoid of branches below 20 feet, and very little ground cover. Photos of the same area taken recently show thickly limbed trees down to ground level, with dense underbrush. Without hundreds of little fires to regularly clear out the low limbs and undergrowth, the forests become dense tinderboxes. When a fire finally breaks through fire suppression, it kills the trees instead of burning their limbs.
Will add fuel to debates over prescribed fires.......2002-02-08
This unusual photographic interpretation of ecological changes brought about by forest fires in the Sierra Nevada since 1849 will provide a guide which should intrigue both California residents and any interested in forestry issues, park management or ecosystems. Chapters use historical photographs to document changes which have taken place over the past 150 years, from early settlements to modern times. Fire In Sierra Nevada Forests will add fuel to debates over prescribed fires and logging issues.

Book Description
Julia Duan's story recalls missionary biographies of an earlier age. Here is an intriguing story of a courageous woman who dared to stand up for Christ in Marxist China and the God who was her strength through it all.
Customer Reviews:
A truely beautiful account........1999-03-06
The courage of this beautiful lady to even publish such a book is fantastic. Her portrayal of that very difficult time in Chinese history without rancor, but with great forgiveness and love, is very encouraging for Christians everywhere. I only wish I could speak to her personally.
A unique perspective on China during this century........1998-05-10
Ms. Duan's life and book are a testimony to the incredible uphevals that have occured in China during this century. From the perspective of a Chinese Christian, Ms. Duan has written a book that integrates her culture and her faith. This book captures the life of a unique woman who has lived a humble life and provides the reader with a window into Chinese life. Definitely a book both to inspire and inform.
A wonderful story of a faith journey in difficult situations.......1998-01-24
This book is most inspiring to those of us who live in a world where we are free to believe and worship as we wish. Julia Duan endured hardships most cannot understand by exhibiting a strong faith through recalling hymns and scripture memorized years in the past. She can inspire us all.
