Fine for what it is..........2006-06-03

The maps are very good and easy to navigate, and their overviews of the main attractions in the D.C. area are about as good as one can hope for in a 1-2 page space for each. They also have good maps of the local transit system. One limitation that potential buyers should be aware of is that this book only deals with D.C. proper and a little bit of Fairfax County - Prince George's County (everything east of the Anacostia River) and Montgomery County (everything north & west of Bethesda) are ignored. If you need information on those areas, you will need to seek out other sources.

Movin' In and Out.......2005-10-14

If you're moving to a new major city or just spending more than a few days in one and you want to really get to know the locale, this guide's for you. It's easy to decipher, offers invaluable information complete with legible, detailed area maps, and the bars, restaurants, shops, schools, churches, sites and more in each neighborhood. I, who am admittedly direction-challenged (even as to left and right), managed to find my way easily around San Francisco for the 4 mos. I was there and was so impressed I purchased one for DC where I've lived for almost 20 yrs. If you want to know where you're going and what's there when you arrive--buy this guide!

great maps.......2005-03-08

this book is essentially a series of maps. each neighborhood gets two maps, one showing things like banks and atms, the other with restaurants and bars, etc. both maps show the metro stops and street names very clearly. i'm currently looking for an apartment in dc (from out of town) and it has been extremely useful in figuring out where buildings are, and if they are in fact "walk to metro!" or whether that walk is a hike. there are a brief (2 sentences) descriptions of the neighborhoods but nothing in depth. there are lists of important numbers, maps of airports, and other handy tidbits i'm sure will be appreciated when i actually move in. my one HUGE complaint keeping this book from 5 stars is that the maps aren't marked with a scale! a 5th grade basic, scale is extremely important in determining how far things are from eachother. obviously. especially since the maps are clearly different scales depending on the size of the neighborhood or locale (ie: reagan airport vs. georgetown). while still useful, having a simple scale on each map would make this book perfect.

Useful book.......2005-02-23

This is a good, useful basic guide for residents and tourists who want to see the real D.C. behind the museums and the White House. I was born in D.C. and this book has provided me with a great deal of information that I will use. I also recommend "The Shopper's Guide to Washington, D.C." by Karen Ertel and "Washington from A to Z" by Paul Wasserman.

Book Description

In this long-awaited work, Philip Hershkovitz provides the most thorough and comprehensive treatise ever published on New World monkeys. The volume gives a detailed account of the origin, evolution, dispersal, and behavior of platyrrhines and a systematic arrangement of all known forms, living and extinct. During an eleven-year period, Hershkovitz examined more than 3,100 museum-preserved specimens and relevant primate fossils and observed hundreds of animals in captivity and thousands in the wild state. He presents his results in an elegant and encyclopedic text, lavishly illustrated with 520 figures and 7 color plates.

Hershkovitz opens the study with a brief history and a definition, characterization, and comparison of primates as a taxonomic unit. Basing his work on nearly all known genera of living primates, the author deals with New World monkeys from comparative anatomical and evolutionary points of view. He examines display characters, pelage, the evolution of color patterns, primate locomotion, cranial and dental morphology, and the central nervous system.

The final and most extensive part of the volume is devoted to the taxonomy and biology of the family Callitrichidae, comprising marmosets and tamarins, and the family Callimiconidae, represented by the callimico alone. Hershkovitz concludes with an exhaustive bibliography of more than 2,500 published works and a gazetteer of essential geographic data.

It is not quite easy for a biologist to face Primatology, and it's rather hard (impossible in some Country!) to decide to become a "true" primatologist: too much informations, and too little possibilities to find them! This work is one of the main friend a primatologist may ask to have if he wish to take that way, and if he really want to begin study primate biology. It may be the main help for the student and, at the same time, the best reference for the researcher. Systematics change, biological concepts evolve and informations become aged while they born, but every culture needs some support to build on it: for Primate Biology, this work is one of the best you can find!

Toy Buildings 1880-1980.......2001-03-04

An outstanding book for dollhouse collectors. Toy Buildings is a must for any collector with interest from Bliss to Converse to Keystone buildings. This book is not limited to dollhouse, but covers a wide variety of toy buildings, many that my brother had. It is an excellent refernce for history of manufactures to present day values for many toy buildings of this era. The color photos are of high quality and does an outstanding job of detailing many old toy building. Most dollhouse collectors have accumulated many Mystery buildings, this book is very useful in unraveling these Mysteries. Written by two excellent collectors, who have written several dollhouse books, this book offers new photos and information on houses and buildings not discussed in past publications. I am a collector of over 25 years and am very glad that I have added this outstanding book to my library.

Caveat emptor: Misleading and dull.......2006-03-04

Sealed as it is cellophane, it is impossible to view the photography in this book before purchase. This is good for the publisher, because this is not a book of Edwardian men. It is a book of dull contemporary nudes rendered in sepiatone to give the illusion of the era. Spada is about as good a photgrapher as he is a biographer: unimaginative, cliche-ridden and dull. He has got away with terrible showbiz bios, but it is more difficult for him to shade his mediocrity in the realm of pictures. One sees rightoff a negligible talent. There must be excellent photographs of actual Edwardian men in archives in the UK, if not here in the US. Some enterprising chap should do us a favor and deliver the real thing. To buy this book is to lead to real disappointment.

Capturing the Essence of Edwardian Times with Contemporary Photographs.......2005-08-07

James Spada's beautifully designed book of his own photographs is a strong dose of nostalgia - a longing for quieter times when solitude and elegance were treasures found in the settings of old roses, old lace, opulent furniture, and that most important ingredient - the sub rosa contexts that so often were associated with the arts of the Edwardian period.

Emphasizing and truly using as his starting point Spada's love for his Victorian house and the foggy, subjugated sensuality of the fin de siecle it represented, this collection of photographs of male nudes eventually took the photographer beyond his own environment, seeking out old bed and breakfast places and locations up and down the East Coast. The uniting thread of this collection is his placement of these beautiful masculine nudes in tandem with Spada's concept of Edwardian atmosphere. The decision to render these photographs, images flooded and shadowed in light and wisps of air, in sepia tone only serves to magnify the overall 'old photograph effect.'

Spada elects to use the written word to further the 'Edwardian spirit', here using excerpts from Shakespeare's sonnets placed strategically throughout the book. James Spada has published his best book yet. Not only are the nude men in this book BEAUTIFUL, but James Spada's use of light and shadows in his photography is remarkable. These are some of the most wonderful specimines of fine art photography I have ever seen.

Wow! This is the most beautiful book of male nudes I've ever seen. It's so sumptuous--the cover is padded and the whole look and feel of it is rich. The men are gorgeous, and the scenery is too. A really unusual and distinctive book of nudes.

This is one of the sexiest, most uninhibited books I have read in a long time. The best part is that it is true classic erotica -- originally published in 1913. In the three volumes of The Intimate Memoirs of an Edwardian Dandy, I read about Rupert Mountjoy's erotic exploits from growing up in the countryside to his prestigious Oxford education. The reader gets a glimpse into the life of a real sensualist with audacious imagination. I marvel at this wonderful book. I love classic erotica, for the fact that said books were written so long ago make it all the more delicious. I couldn't put this book down. I read this book in two sittings and I cannot wait to read something like it. I'm not a big fan of Blue Moon books, but this one's very special. Highly recommended to all erotica bibliophiles...

Memoirs of an Eduardian Dandy' and was edited by James Jennincs the absolute master of erotica ....First published in in London in 1913 these books I am sure have weathered time in many of daddys desks bottom drawer to be discovered .....

The books are an autobiogrphy of Rupert Mountjoy's introduction and growth in the world or erocticism. Being a wealthy young Englishman with no concers for his income he certainly is able to give hedonism a new name.

In the first volume names 'First Stirrings 'Rupert and his friend Frank meet Diana and Cecily two very very easy coming and going young ladies that help with their real life education ... and, this education, as one would expect, both the boys had to be helped over and over by these very very willing little vixens...

Volume 2 is a continuation of Ruperts education 'A Freshmans Tale 'with an enlarged group of friends that continue their education in the softer and yummie things in life. They don't seem to get much school work done in these books but then with those friends neither would I ....

Volume 3 called 'A Menu to Savour' we continue to enjoy Ruperts exploits as a young man after Oxford. He manages to maintain contact with Diana and Cecili and a whole new expanded group of friends that facilitate their very gregarious need to seek every single pleasure of the flesh that is imaginable ....

Finally although the title says it's and Edwardina dandy, trust me this is classic Victorian erotica writing and does not use that dark brooding Edwardian erotica style ....
