Bulky but handleable.......2000-06-15

This is a botanical reference work on the trees of Southern Africa (mostly S-Africa & Rhodesia/Zimbabwe?). Its printing history speaks for itself. First published in 1977; second revised edition by Dr E.J.Moll in 1984, third impression 1988 (when 12 pages were added with updates on nomenclature); ninth impression in 1997. What can I add to that?

This is an identification key and reference work to Southern African trees, giving per species a short description, a distribution map and one (or more) line drawings of a detail, usually a leaf (sometimes a fruit, sometimes both. Upon occasion a tree habit). Names listed include full scientific name, in some cases synonyms, always an english name and usually an afrikaans name. There are close to a thousand pages of this, supplemented with over a hundred pages of color illustrations (both photographs and colored drawings).

Shows Lack of Knowledge of Boston.......2006-06-11

As a native of Boston, who routinely entertains friends who visit and spend time in the city, I am constantly looking for the best guide to recommend to our guests when they are out and about exploring. Unlike many guidebooks to Boston, this one lacks actual knowledge of the city. I question the author's time spent in Boston. I wonder if he simply read Fodor's Boston and wrote his own version full of comments manufactured to make you believe he had spent a considerable amount of time here. It appears he never ventured out of the tourist areas of downtown and he missed a large part of the city, which makes Boston so unique and provincial. On top of this his analysis of downtown, the Common, and Back Bay give you no insight, and would not help a tourist go beyond what they could learn about Boston from a tourist information booth. He speaks of various parts of Boston at times with even contempt.

He includes inaccuracies (such as the fact that Dorchester Heights is in Dorchester - actually it is in South Boston) and paints whole neighborhoods in just a paragraph (what he groups together as the south part of the city). This only glosses over or misses the great charm of such areas of the city as Centre St. in Jamaica Plain, Jackson Square, Franklin Park and the Forrest Hills Cemetery, the ethnic foods and stores of Dorchester and Roxbury. He actually goes as far to recommend you avoid much of Dorchester and incorrectly describes south Dorchester as a place your life may be in danger, which is just factually incorrect (and beside this much of the crime exists in the northern parts of the neighborhood and parts of Roxbury where he suggest people visit). Why discuss neighborhoods in such a negative light, with no actual knowledge of them, intentionally deterring people from going there who would not have gone there in the first place?

This is one of the worst guidebooks I have read about the city of Boston... And I would not recommend it to any of our friends if they were visiting.

turtle and tortoise TOME!.......2006-08-22

as the caretaker of a red-footed tortoise, and being terribly curious about what's going on "under the hood," i found all the answers that i wanted in this amazingly informative book (and then some)!

curious about prescription drugs? diseases? anatomy? surgical techniques? husbandry recommendations? it's ALL there, with wonderfully vivid illustrations. a word to the squeamish, though -- there are many graphic photographs from study cadavers and of case studies that show the effects of major illness, injury, and neglect/abuse.

while the cost is, yes, prohibitively expensive, please don't let that veer you from trying to check this book out for yourself. many public and university libraries participate in inter-library loans, and you may very likely be able to read it that way (that's what i did!).

The new gold standard in chelonian veterinary science.......2004-05-24

Wow! Only rarely does a book come along that will obviously become the gold standard in its field, and this is definitely one of them. At first glance the price is hefty, but once opened it is clear that this text is worth every penny. At almost 600 pages, this is the most comprehensive veterinary text on chelonians published, and is so far ahead of the rest of the field it is impossible to compare it. The book contains lavish quantities of colour photos. This is further supplemented by illustrations and tables to make the vast quantity of information more accessible and user friendly. This is in no way an anecdotal text, but a copiously referenced resource, assembled by well known authors in the forefront of the field of herpetological veterinary medicine. The book itself is a large hardback volume, printed on good quality paper, with a robust binding that promises to withstand many years of use. This text will without doubt soon become the standard in chelonian medicine and surgery. It is an absolute must for any veterinarian working with tortoises or turtles, either in a practice or a zoo situation. It will be equally useful to serious herpetologists, zoo keepers, and those involved in the captive management, breeding, or rehabilitation of chelonians.
