Florida Wildflowers.......2007-07-23
Very good reference and wonderful photos! A must for any native plant grower or nature lover!
Useful when paired with a key-style field guide.......2006-07-17
This guide gives a good overview of the plant communities and the wildflowers found in them, as opposed to being a field guide whose only purpose is plant identification. The arrangement by community is very handy, and there are many fine photos. While you will get a nice education on habitat from this book, the lack of a key may be off-putting to some people.
The missing key does force one to know what community he or she is in (which is the point of the book) and then requires flipping through the pictures, which makes the book a bit unwieldy for me to use in the field. Since I can finally use a key fairly well, I will likely use Taylor's guide as a supplement to my favorite keyed guide.
Not Very Helpful.......2003-04-15
This book is very limited. You have to look at each page to ID the flower. Some pictures are not very clear, and some do not show the leaves. If the plant you look at is not excatly like the book's pix you can't be 100% sure of the plant's ID.
Handy field guide.......2002-04-13
I like to take this book in the field. The organization allows me to quickly scan what flowering plants I can expect to see in the habitat I'm in. This is especially useful for a lay person who doesn't yet know how to identify family or genus by sight.
A must have guide for anyone interested in wildflowers of Fl.......2000-06-26
This is an easy to use guide that provides quick identification of Florida wildflowers. The organization is intuitive. Each species treatment is thorough and the photography is top notch. This user highly recomends this book.

Customer Reviews:
Good Supplement.......2007-01-15
As one who uses the cuisine as a guide for their travelling, this is a must. Markets tend to be one of the more immersive activities tourists can experience, this book gives explanation of which markets in which cities, on which days can be found. Certainly worth buying in addition to the main Lonley Planet book. One could also find good advice of 'foodie' blogs in and around Hanoi / Saigon.
This particular version (Vietnam) gives a full pardon to establishing dietary restrictions in terms of unwashed vegetables and overall quality of meat. Not sure if this is correct, but then again I've never been there. Would be skeptical that this is indeed the case, but a paranoid Westerner I might be.
Essential Culinary Roadmap to Vietnam Even for the Non-Traveler.......2006-07-12
Any traveler worth his or her salt knows the best and easiest way to get to the heart of a country is to experience firsthand the culinary delights that country has to offer. Lonely Planet has figured this out by publishing a series of fine, pocket-sized books under their "World Food" series, and the Vietnam tome is one of their best thanks to the zeal of the author, Berkeley-based food adventurer Richard Sterling. This book was an invaluable guide for me when I visited that epicurean paradise five years ago as he covers the vast landscape of food and drink there. Sterling moves fluidly from the culture and history of Vietnamese cuisine through the staples and specialties you would find in a Vietnamese kitchen to the nuances of regional fare, whether it's the heavy influence of Chinese cuisine in the North or the use of exotic tropical fruit in Southern dishes.
I particularly like the sections that focus on celebrating with food, the delicacies you find in street kiosks and the chapter on the bold palate, which includes dishes that use toads, cobras, rodents and of course, dogs. Obviously not all the food is meant to be savored by everyone, but this provides a comprehensive, easy-to-read guide to the variety of tastes and sensations to be experienced including a definitive culinary dictionary, a quick-reference glossary and useful phrases when you order food and drink there. Sterling includes recipes, city maps highlighting his favorite eateries, and the "Faces of Gastronomy", which highlights local chefs and food experts. In fact, when I visited Hoi An, I visited one of them based on the author's recommendation, Miss Vy, who owns the Mermaid Restaurant. I took one of her four-hour cooking classes and was able to discover for myself many of the epicurean joys found in the pages of this helpful book. If Sterling's knowledgeable prose is not enough, the wonderful photographs should convince you. Regardless of whatever guidebook you purchase for more general information, no trip to Vietnam should be without this one. Armchair travelers will rejoice as well.
Thumbs up to this book.......2005-12-18
We just went to Vietnam this year. The book was very helpful to identify and discuss various food items in Vietnamese cuisine. It is also small and easily "packable". It seems it is not intended to be a listing of restaurants, and some of those that are listed do not exist anymore. Nevertheless, we still found the book useful. It does seem to be written from an Australian point of view, if that makes any difference to you.
Fine fun book.......2000-06-03
As a food writer planning a trip to Vietnam (for personal, not food-related reasons), I found this book to be an excellent introduction to the culture and cuisine. I may never cook any of the recipes in it, but it's helped me know what to look for when I go, and to anticipate my trip even more. I thought it was very well-written. Sterling's sense of adventure and good living are apparent in the guide in an infectious, inviting way. He is judgemental about no one but the foreign young people who go to Vietnam to eat fake burgers and wiener schnitzel instead of the light, beautiful food. And the photographs are as compelling as the writing. Buy this book!
fact correction on previous review.......2000-05-10
the reference to dog meat preperation contrary to Lonely Planet's description is from Robert Templer's _Shadow and Wind: A View of Modern Viet Nam_.

Book Description
With its first issue in January of 1918 Wendingen set a new standard in arts publishing. The pioneering journal sought out the newest ideas by the most creative practitioners in all of the visual arts--architecture, graphics, typography, sculpture, ceramics, glass, and theatrical design--and then reproduced them in sumptuous, hand-bound editions of unparalleled beauty. Over its fourteen-year history, Wendingen, which translates roughly as "upheaval," featured the work of such diverse artists as Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann, Eileen Gray, and Erich Mendelsohn. It introduced the work of Frank Lloyd Wright to European audiences in a series of seven issues published in 1925 and 1926. But it is best known for its covers, ranging in style from the art nouveau to the constructivist to the art deco, all of which are reproduced here in color. In this first comprehensive study of this extraordinary magazine, Le Coultre gives students, scholars, and collectors access to this now scarce magazine. He also calls long-overdue attention to the role of Wendingen's founding editor, Hendricus Theodorus Wijedveld, in shaping the course of modern design.
Book Description
Precious Ramotswe is the eminently sensible and cunning proprietor of the only ladies’ detective agency in Botswana. In
Tears of the Giraffe she tracks a wayward wife, uncovers an unscrupulous maid, and searches for an American man who disappeared into the plains many years ago. In the midst of resolving uncertainties, pondering her impending marriage to a good, kind man, Mr. J. L. B. Matekoni, and the promotion of her talented secretary (a graduate of the Botswana Secretarial College, with a mark of 97 per cent), she also finds her family suddenly and unexpectedly increased by two.
Customer Reviews:
What's not to love???.......2007-06-04
Loved it! This author writes with clarity and passion such that I find myself immersed in his work. Truly a don't miss!
A Beautiful Life.......2007-05-31
An enchanting book for all ages, of a good, quiet, content, polite world. No violence, no sex, no sadness. Characters are satisfied with the way they look, and the way they live, and have plenty to give! This book encourages moral, social, and family ties. It promotes the almost-forgotten concept of active involvement in bringing happiness to others, and hence to oneself. In this novel, Africa is forever warm, colorful, friendly, and proud.
Outstanding Stories.......2007-04-06
I have read everyone of Alexander McCall Smith's books of life in Africa and I loved everyone of them. Alexander McCall Smith is a great story teller and his characters come to life. His talent in describing the everyday events in the life of his characters is nothing less than brilliant. Do yourself a favor, read any one of his books and you will be transformed into the life of
people you don't meet everyday.
The Adventures of Mma Ramotswe continue.......2007-03-03
In TEARS OF THE GIRAFFE the wonderful sequel to THE NO.1 LADIES' DETECTIVE AGENCY, Mma Ramotswe, the strong, feisty, proud but compassionate lady detective (the only in Botswana, maybe Africa) faces new challenges both in her life and in her work. Upon her engagement to the kind, reliable mechanic, Mr. J.L.B Matekoni, she ponders a possible move, negotiates the purchase of her engagement ring (diamond, of course!) and suddenly finds herself a new mother of two children. She is also called upon by an American mother to resolve the mystery of her son, who disappeared in the desolate Kalahari Plains many years ago, and track the modern, 'wayward' wife of a honest butcher.
Like its predecessor, this book is not your typical "who dun it" detective story- in fact, the detective element figures in this story even less than in the first novel. Mma Ramotswe only solves two cases- actually, she solves only one, as the other is solved by her able, newly promoted Assistant, Mma Makutsi. Rather, the novel focuses on developing solid characters (apart from Mma Ramotswe, we get much more insight in this novel into the characters of Mr. J.L.B Matekoni and Mma Makutsi) and highlights life in Botswana and the views of its proud people.
Unlike its predecessor, this book has more of a focus on ex-pats and development workers, which I found interesting as an ex-pat development worker in Africa. Mma Ramotswe comments that Ex-pats often do not have good manners (ie, would shake with one hand, leaving the other hand free for 'mischievous activities') and do not understand simple, obvious issues such as the fact that the dead are always with us. Ex-pat development workers, although well-meaning, are always coming up with bizarre, idealistic theories and schemes. They are always giving advice, always trying 'to change the world.' But, as Mma Ramotswe says, vegetables just were not meant to be grown in the Kalahari desert! Furthermore, "Africa needs its own solutions."
This novel also focuses on moral issues: Mma Ramotswe and Mr. J.L.B Matekoni both lament the loss of 'the Old Botswana morality' which promotes hard work and a respect for elders. Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi struggle with moral questions such as, does the end justify the means? Ie, is it okay to lie, manipulate and blackmail to get a desired, even just, result? The novel ends on a beautiful note, suggesting that in order to heal after loss, compassion, understanding and reconciliation maybe more important than strict justice.
love the detective agency.......2007-01-24
I love the descriptions of the life and places in these books. Very rich.

Book Description
Stories about wealthy collectors who spent enormous sums of money on their collections. The World's Greatest Stamp Collectors is a completely revised and updated edition (1990) of a book that was released in 1981. Bierman, a lifelong collector himself, takes a probing, and often irreverent, look at the lives of 19 men and one woman who dominated the world of stamp collectors for over 100 years. More of the World's Greatest Stamp Collectors was an all-new book when Linn's published it in 1991. It is devoted exclusively to a select group of U.S. stamp collectors and dealers from the 1890 to 1950 era.

Book Description
This volume of the Editio Maior Critica of the works of Gregory of Nyssa, founded by Werner Jaeger, comprises the third and final part of the sermons of this fourth-century Church Father, which deal with a number of religious festivals as well as theological issues. The present work contains the following sermons: De deitate filii et spiritus sancti et in Abraham (ed. E. Rhein), In diem natalem (ed. F. Mann), In sanctam Pentecosten (ed. D. Teske), Adversus eos qui castigationes aegre ferunt (ed. D. Teske), and De iis qui baptismum differunt (ed. H. Polack). The edition is based on no fewer than 159 manuscripts, a clear sign of the major influence Gregory's sermons had on the life of the Church and on the theological debate. These codices are discussed in individual introductions which analyse how they interrelate, the results of which analysis are illustrated in a Stemma. The text is printed next to the apparatus criticus, together with the apparatus fontium. The book concludes with a number of indices which provide an overview of all sources of Gregory of Nyssa's work.

Book Description
After the death of Hermann Langerbeck, the Patristic Commission of the Academies of Science entrusted Heinrich Dorrie and the "Forschungsstelle Gregor von Nyssa" set up by him at the University of Munster, West Germany, with the edition of the second part of the sermons of Gregory of Nyssa. Because of the size of the corpus, it was decided to split into two the single volume (X) of the Opera Gregorii Nysseni in which it was previously planned to publish these texts. Volume X 1, now published, contains Gregory's sermons on saints and martyrs: De vita Gregorii Thaumaturgi (ed. G. Heil); De sancto Theodoro (ed. J.P. Cavarnos); In sanctum Stephanum I, II, In Basilium fratrem and In XL Martyres Ia, Ib, II (ed. O. Lendle). These sermons were later to exercise a great influence on the Greek church and were quickly taken up into the standard collections of hagiographical texts. They are to be found today in a total of 376 manuscripts, which form (with the exception of a few less accessible manuscripts) the basis for the present critical edition of the texts. The editing of these many copies of the text was greatly facilitated by the editorial method for use with richly attested Patristic texts developed by O. Lendle in the course of preparing his preliminary edition of In Sanctum Stephanum (published 1968). J.P. Cavarnos); In sanctum Stephanum I, II, In Basilium fratrem, In XL Martyres Ia, Ib, II (ed. O. Lendle).

Book Description
Cheeky and clever, and often darkly subversive, these poems are vintage Silverstein. His poems are humorously seditious, full of rhyme, rhythm, and energetic word play. Silverstein's pen-and-ink drawings extend and explain the words, making them the perfect accompaniment.

A very especial book.......2007-04-06
This is one of the most beautiful stories I have read . It will touch your heart .
El árbol masoquista y el niño egocéntrico .......2006-10-28
After reading all the 5 star reviews for its spanish version, I bought this book for my kids . I am SO sorry I did not see the reviews for the English version (which include some 1 star reviews) before buying it. A total waste of money. I would give this book minus 1000 stars if I could. I would even love to see it out of print. I was horrified when I read the story. My kids like it but I am thinking about getting rid of this book soon, before my kids are able to understand its message.
This book is pathetic. It is about a tree that is willing to give absolutely everything he has in order to make the boy happy. The tree would represent the love of a mother who is willing to give everything for her child. But enough is enough. As a mother, you sometimes have to say NO. If you really love your child you are not going to let them become the child in the book. It is not a lesson to teach your child... you should not give and give and give them everything they ask for. THey need to be able to feel empathy toward others and they have to be able to meet their own needs eventually. The boy just goes to visit the tree when he needs something and shows NO apreciation, no gratefulness, no emotion toward the tree that is giving him absolutely everything he has.
I could not believe my eyes when I saw how the tree kept self mutilating until it had nothing else to give to the ungrateful, selfish, egocentric boy. The boy represents a spoiled monster child that is uncapable of feeling any empathy or love for the one that loves him so much. They boy simple went to visit the tree over and over again, each time asking for something he needed to satisfy his own needs, and then left with the trees apples, branches, trunk, without even saying thank you.
I know this book is popular but think about it before buying it to your child... Popular is not always good. Read it, think about the message it gives and please, DO NOT read it to your children. The world does not need more people like the little boy in the book...
Excellent book for children and adults.......2001-03-01
This book wraps up many beautiful teaching about life. It is excellent for people of all ages and from all over the world. I highly recommend this book.
The Meaning of Being a Parent.......2000-12-04
I love this book! This book is the story of all the things that a parent provides for their child: love, attention, and comfort. The tree is the "parent" and gives to the child all that it can, until it has no more to give and what a parent expects in return...the child's happiness, in order to be happy.
I loved the book ,I'm 29, I cried when I read it ...........1999-04-29
I'm a mother of two , Just got the book ,I have been reading it to them every night. It breinges tears to my eyes every time I read it ...I know I'll keep this book for ever ..not just for my kids but even for thier own kids ....

A Mother's Love Never Fades.......2001-05-10
As a hispanic man I enjoy books that celebrate cultural diversity and lifelong learning. Although the author Judith Kan is an Asian woman, I feel as if I can relate to the hard won advice she gives her daughter in Essays From the Heart. My wife died two years ago and won't be able to see our daughter graduate this year. It breaks my heart not only because I miss my wife, but because my wife and daughter were so very close. I gave Essays From The Heart to my daughter as an early graduationm gift. She says that when she read it she was flooded with memories of time spent with her mother. She felt as though her mother was there, ever so gently helping her make important decisions for her future. At a time when a daughter needs a mother most, Judith Kan has given us a gift that will last a lifetime. Thank you so very much.

A Beautiful Book!.......2001-05-10
Life is hard and full of opportunities to make mistakes. It is my opinion that any help from outside sources should be welcomed with open arms and a discerning mind. One of the joys of being an adult is that we have permission to make decisions based on our experiences and knowledge.
Judith Kan has drawn the roadmap for a successful transition from childhood to adult life. Based on her own life experiences, and the experiences of her colleagues and friends, Essays From the Heart offers an incredible link that offers no option other than success. Kan herself admits that there is no one right answer to the problems we face in life, and she also admits her own human mistakes. There is no way to totally avoid the pitfalls in the road of life, however after gleaning knowledge and understanding from those around you, an adult should have the ability to dust themselves off and start down the road again.
Judith Kan's book is beautifully written and her fresh literary voice offers pearls of widsom that are timeless and appreciated by audiences worldwide. Whether you are looking for an inspirational gift for a young person or an adult needing to refocus their life, this book will help in their search for answers.

Judith has given the most precious gift a mother could give a daughter - her candid and honest tales of successes, failures and advice. All mothers should read this book.
Don't wait for Mother's Day to pick this up!.......2000-06-01
Judith Kan's debut work resonates with wisdom and experience, delivered from the hip as well as from the heart. I recommend this book for anyone who has children, as well as for anyone needing a primer on how to make the most of the joys, wonders and challenges that are Life.
