Great for Family Walks!.......2000-06-21
This is a great little book to take along on family outings. It's not comprehensive, but it was not meant to be; it does identify the most common plants that one is likely to run across and be curious about. The illustrations make the plants readily identifiable, along with regional distributions and common names. Small, easy to carry along, inexpensive enough take some rough handling by children. This small book could be the impetus for younger members of the family to find a new interest, but is also thorough enough to make walks in the woods enjoyable for the adults. I found it to be well worth the price.

Disappointing map of Eritrea.......2005-09-20
I bought the ITM Map of Eritrea hoping to get a detailed, up-to-date, and carefully drawn map of that interesting country in East Africa. I know Eritrea fairly well from several visits, careful study of their history, and friendship linking. But alas, this map is inaccurate, it contains few details, and the factual information inserted in the map is difficult to read. The map also contains a historical account of Eritrea. I find the narrative dubious in many regards. For instance, it is claimed that 'Arabs' developed the kingdom of Aksum by the third century, while historians now believe that the Axumite culture may well have originated in Africa. No mention is made of the interesting connection between Egypt and Punt (believed by many to be Eritrea) in the third and second millennium BC. To sum up: a very disappointing map - qualifying for one star in my evaluation.

Most detailed cartography of Eritrea I have seen so far.
It has been a lot of help to find my way around Eritrea.
Eritrea, specially the capital Asmara is one of the hidden gems in the world.
I advice any one to visit. I found it to be one of the calmest, friendliest and safest countries I visited.

If you only own one hamster care book..........2007-05-20
This book is very detailed and up to date regarding hamster care ranging from basic care and health concerns to breeding and showing hamsters. Because the book is detailed it may not be reader friendly for younger children who own hamsters than other hamster starter care books on the market featuring simpler formats. It has some very nice color illustration sections outlining different varieties of hamsters. I think it should definitely be in a hamster owners library for reference.
An excellent resource for beginning and experienced hamster owners alike.......2005-10-26
I've had a number of hamsters over the past several years, and have looked through a good many hamster books to find various information about caring for them. Unfortunately, a lot of the ones at the pet stores are often out of date and can even include misinformation. However, Hamsterlopaedia is neither of those things, and though it took a bit to find it, I'm glad I did. This is an amazingly detailed book that not only covers the basics, like how to house and feed your hamsters, but it even goes into hamster biology and the most common health problems to watch out for. It also provides information on breeding hamsters, including caring for a mother and her new babies, and not only includes information on Syrian hamsters but dwarf hamsters as well. Most of the book is text, but there are a good number of photo pages as well, especially to illustrate the various colors and types of hamsters. Whether you've just gotten your first hamster or you've been caring for them for years, this book has plenty to offer. I would highly recommend this book and I really appreciate the authors' work in writing it.

a down to earth read.......2006-07-22
Funny, witty and packed with useful information without being preachy. I first bought this book in the early 1990's when I came out and had never heard of Mrs Greenthumbs. I wore out that first copy and bought a second. I have since given it as gifts and passed around my own copy more times than I can count. Mrs Danz gives practical advice in a down home comfortable way with out being too scientific. The month by month book format works well too. A must own for my gardening book shelf.
Helpful tips but not particularly funny.......2005-04-15
I am a relative newcomer to gardening and this book has helpful tips. It is particularly useful if you want to garden in the style of Gertrude Jeykll. I never saw "Mrs. Greenthumbs" on television nor heard her on the radio. She may have been very funny in these appearances, but I didn't feel like it translated to the page very well. Nevertheless, Cassandra Danz died three years ago and this book is part of her legacy, about which she should be proud.
Warm, witty & wise.......2004-11-18
When I grow up, I want to be like Mrs. Greenthumbs!
This book doesn't have any glossy photos - just so much practical gardening information that it's the BEST gardening book I ever read (and I've read many, many, many). Cassandra Danz shares her successes - and her failures - and hard-learned lessons in a funny, easy-to-read, month-by-month format. I LOVE this!!!
One of Gardening's Sexier Tomes.......2004-02-26
This is a charming and delightful book, as enjoyable a read for the novice (who will appreciate the practical tips) as for the experienced gardener (who will shake their head knowingly in agreement).
Danz is a very funny writer, and I've reread this book just for the pleasure of such sections as translating DayLily Catalogue Language (basically, "red" = orange, "yellow" = orange, "orange" = bright orange, and "red with a yellow throat" = orange-from-more-than-two feet away).
She seems quite a lusty lady as well, and proud of her married status (she claims that as a married woman, she has a rough sense of what 6-8 inches means and thus doesn't need a ruler to plant bulbs).
Very recommended.
Note: a 3 star ranking from me is actually pretty good; I reserve 4 stars for tremendously good works, and 5 only for the rare few that are or ought to be classic; unfortunately most books published are 2 or less.

WOW, your delivery service is superb! I received this very entertaining book and couldn't put it down. I finished reading it the day Cassandra Danz passed on. I wish I could have seen her on the TV! I bet she was a kick! Her style and tips are helping me alot, being a new gardener and all.

We are all, it is said, looking for love. But what does love look like? Does it look the way it feels? The visual vocabulary of romance-its attendant comforts and vulnerabilities, ambivalences and unclarities-is the subject of Venus Inferred. This collection of 46 richly reproduced color photographs is Laura Letinsky's study of contemporary lovers as they are seen, as they show, and as they see themselves making love and inhabiting domestic space. Entering what might be called the intimate sphere, Letinsky's camera explores a space too personal to be termed public and yet whose cultural and emotional shape is uncannily recognizable. Over a seven-year period, Letinsky visited lovers in their homes, hotel rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchens and recorded in detail the promises, disharmonies, and disappointments that inhere in modern coupling.
Accompanying the photographs is an essay by critic Lauren Berlant, which presents an aesthetic and cultural analysis of the contemporary images of romance and intimacy. Berlant contemplates the burden of clarity that sexuality bears, implicit both in conventional romantic ideals and in the "counterpolitics of the flesh" that desires to escape them. Thus arises the sublime ordinariness of Letinsky's couples, Berlant argues: "As 'normal' pleasures themselves become deemed modes of domination, the already destabilizing aspects of sexuality can feel even more unsettling." An interview between Letinsky and Berlant unfolds the artist's intellectual formation while exploring the unsettling and pleasurable power of her images as they circulate through the domains of romance, sexuality, and contemporary culture.

Nothing new here, folks; move along........2002-01-01
From the warmed-over Velvet Underground reference in the title (and what the hell is she trying to say by using the word "inferred?") begins the parade of cliches in this book of mediocre faux-documentary photography.
To wit; Yale graduate student photographs other self-absorbed New York types pretending to make love. Heavy emphasis on recycled Nan Goldin archetypes. Other photographers do this better, but now that Goldin's off the wagon I guess everyone's trying out for her spot in the limelight.
Check out Letinksy's site at the University of Chicago for a laundry list of over-chewed postmodernist discussion about romance and photography. Heavy use of the term "informed by" should tip you off that this is just the waking embodient of an academic's wet dream.
the look of...love?.......2000-12-24
This is art photography at its' best--like Winogrand, Tina Barney, or Sturges, but emotionally much more raw. Letinsky's images turn conventional stereotypes upside down in this most provacative work.
