Beautifully produced compendium of Brit-flora watercolors.........2005-06-13
This atmospheric book preserves a classically British place and time -- country Great House, 19th century. Ladies of sensitivity and breeding painted watercolors (oils were for "serious" male artists).
These 2 generations worth of works are reproduced finely enough for framing the larger examples. Backgrounds are age-yellowed; the drafting, composition, and coloration are impressive for unknown amateurs (again, ladies were considered charming dabblers).
The cover (printed same as the shiny DJ, with a bit of an incongruous linen-texture finish that will nevertheless wear well) is done in fancy marbled paper/leather-tipping simulation -- a great "old time" look for the country decorated sunroom table, etc. Nice peek into a bygone era!

Customer Reviews:
Great little book to get ypu around LV.......2006-08-01
This is a great little book to get you around LA if you are a shopaholic and even if you are not. It inludes even the most obscure shops and has very honest critiques and good directions - plus lots more!
Top Notch :-).......2006-01-02
This is the second book of theirs that I've bought. They are great because they are up to date, and so helpful. With each store, it has the address, phone number, opening hours and everything else about it that can be of use. They give good descriptions of what the store carrys and a tid bit of info about the owners etc. At the back of the book there is a few restaurant picks as well. Another great thing about this book is that it caters to anyone of any financial status. There are high end stores and stores geared to people with a budget in mind. The only possible bonus they could maybe include next issue would be a few photos here and there, but really, in general, this guide is great for helping you choose the best spots to go to and you can narrow down what is and what isn't of interest to you. Although I know Los Angeles very well, there are a few stores in here that I may not otherwise have known about and for that, I'm happy to buy a copy every couple of years or so.

Book Description
This beautifully written book, illustrated by four-time Caldecott Honor recipient Jerry Pinkney, makes the story of Harriet Tubman's childhood accessible to very young readers. As a young slave, nicknamed "Minty," Harriet Tubman was a feisty and stubborn girl with a dream of escape, and whose rebellious spirit often got her into trouble. Pinkney's expressive illustrations bring every emotion to brilliant life-from troubled sorrow to spirited hope for freedom.
"Rich with melodrama, suspense, pathos, and a powerful vision of freedom. This exquisitely crafted book resonates well beyond its few pages." -Kirkus Reviews, pointer review

Customer Reviews:
Good Classroom Book.......2006-03-11
I used this book as part of a Black History Month. The class loved it.
A powerful book.......2002-12-31
Eight-year-old "Minty," a fictionalized version of a young Harriet Tubman, suffers greatly while working as a slave on a Maryland plantation. Her rebellious nature adds an extra degree of conflict, and she has several traumatic experiences. With the guidance of her father, she starts planning to escape.
Scenes of Minty with her family are very tenderly rendered in this 1997 Coretta Scott King Award winner. Illustrator Jerry Pinkney effectively combines pencils and watercolors to add an appropriately subdued, somewhat dreary cast even to bright, sunny scenes. The strong text describes the horrors of scenes too disturbing to show in the illustrations.
The story really tugged at my heartstrings. It is a very moving story, well told, but still very sad.
Minty the girl.......2002-01-17
Minty was treated awful wiped to her bones. Most of us don't know how badly Minty was treated and this story will help you under stand Black history please read this book and you will know how i feel.
Young Harriet Tubman.......2000-07-03
A fictionalized story mixed with facts about the young Harriet Tubman. It chronicles her life from the Maryland plantation from which she escaped, and provides details of what life was like as a slave on a plantation. Wonderful book that is dramatic and full of interesting details about a famous American. Harriet Tubman was a hero of her time and this book does an excellent job of telling her story. Schroeder's mixture of fact and fiction make this book a joy to read.
The life of young Harriet Tubman........1999-07-13
As a teacher, I found this book to be helpful in introducing my students to one of America's famous female heroines. This is an appropriate book for third to sixth grade students. Fifth and sixth graders should have an easy time reading this book; however, third and fourth graders will probably enjoy it more if it is read to them. Pinkney's illustrations are wonderful. If you enjoyed his use of pencil, colored pencils, and watercolors in other books (e.g. The Patchwork Quilt) then you'll cetainly enjoy the work he's done in this book. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to remind children that it's important to dream, hope, and have faith.

Great book for children!.......2005-09-26
I purchased this book for my 8 year old daughter, who had to sumbit a book report for school. It was an easy read and the pictures were great. I recommend it to other parents as we were very pleased with the book.
A Picture Book of Harriet Tubman.......2002-03-01
This is a great book for young readers. I used it to introduce second graders to Harriet Tubman and the times in which she lived. David Adler uses simple sentences to explain complex issues including slavery, the Underground Railroad, the Civil War, and other issues surrounding this time in American history. I highly recommend all the David Adler Picture Books for young readers to get their first glimse into the lives of important people in history.
Be careful reading to younger audiences.......1999-02-22
It is important to monitor the word choice that the author uses when you are reading this book to a younger audience. They do not understand how you can die from a paper weight being thrown at them or harsh things like whipping or beating. Such vocabulary can be abrasive for you children. Overall the book is beneficial for African American History month.
Book Description
Illus. in full color. Cassie, who flew above New York in Tar Beach, soars into the sky once more. This time, she and her brother Be Be meet a train full of people, and Be Be joins them. But the train departs before Cassie can climb aboard. With Harriet Tubman as her guide, Cassie retraces the steps escaping slaves took on the real Underground Railroad and is finally reunited with her brother at the story's end. "Cassie learns her people's history well; so will readers of this impressive picture book. Ringgold's dynamic paintings combine historical fact with strongly realized emotions."--(starred) Booklist. "Groundbreaking!"--(starred) School Library Journal.
Customer Reviews:
maybe not so good for 1st and 2nd graders.......2007-02-08
I love Faith Ringgold's work but think Tar Beach might be a more appropriate title for younger students. I read it aloud to some younger children (first and second grade) and didn't think the book was appropriate for them.
There are some strange moments in the plot (and I realize the book is supposed to be surreal and dream-like). For example, Be be writes Cassie a note that says "We stayed at the house of a millionaire. He gave Aunt Harriet lots of money. We will never be hungry again." I'm not sure if this is supposed to reflect a real event in Tubman's life (I know she went on to become a Union spy but not many other biographical details) or if it's supposed to illustrate the value of charity and kindness of the people who helped escaped slaves, but it certainly does little for the narrative. While it's true that slaves had no money and runaway slaves would face economic hardships even in the free states, I'm just not sure how this plot twist fits into the book, especially because it is never mentioned again.
Another issue is that there is a scary white figure lurking in many of the illustrations--peering through a window, popping out in a graveyard. His presence definitely brings attention to the bounty hunters that would capture slaves and the danger that lurked all around, but my students didn't seem to grasp that Cassie re-lives the time of slavery. I tried the "maybe the train is like a time-machine?" tact, too. No luck.
It was a fun book and my students did like the flying=freedom metaphor but I would use it with older students next time!
Great learning tool.......2006-11-03
I have purchased this book as a learning tool for an Education Committee at our local quilter's guild. This book is well written and wonderful for young people.
An imaginative journey based on historical information.......2005-04-07
This well written children's book recounts the story of slavery in an easy to understand langugage with corresponding pictures. The pictures are primitively done with paint and canvas, but are detailed and represent drawings from that time period. The overall story draws in historical aspects of a time period using actual information that every child shoud be aware of. Aunt Harriet's Underground Railroad in the Sky portrays life as a slave from the viewpoint of someone who lives in the that life and compares their hardships to our life today. For furthor reading,at the book there is biographical information about Harriet Tubman and a map of the Underground Railroad in 1880. Young readers can see that although this story is fiction, it is based on real events.
An excellent book.......2002-03-05
This book is fantastic - its illustrations are haunting and lovely, and the story is magical and historical at the same time. Faith Ringgold's approach makes the history simpler for children to understand while not undermining the depth and horror of slavery in America. I highly recommend it to any parent.
A Magical Trip on the Underground Railroad............2001-08-19
"One day, my brother Be Be and I were flying among the stars, way way up, so far up the mountains looked like pieces of rock candy and the oceans like tiny cups of tea. We came across an old ramshackled train in the sky." So begins Cassie Louise Lightfoot's tale of meeting "conductor" Harriet Tubman and riding the underground railroad to Canada. Based on Harriet Tubman's account of a dream she had while very sick, of flying to freedom and enhanced with historical facts and imagination, Faith Ringgold has authored a superb story that transports youngsters back to the slave holding plantations of the south, over one hundred years ago, and then sends them on a terrifying, yet exhilarating journey to freedom. Her engaging poetic text, full of imagery and magic, is complemented by her bold, expressive, evocative illustrations and together, word and art bring this emotional story to life. With additional biographical notes and map, tracing the underground railroad routes, included to augment lessons and discussions, Aunt Harriet's Underground Railroad In The Sky is a masterpiece youngsters 6-10 shouldn't miss and a wonderful addition to all home libraries.

Book Description
Indoor plants bring living warmth to any interior décor. Arrange them in beautiful containers, root them creatively in varied textural beds, and enjoy the stunning results. Author Rosemary McCreary has designed 40 dazzling tabletop gardens to inspire the indoor green thumb year-round — gardens that enhance the home with more drama than potted houseplants and greater durability than cut flowers.
McCreary’s innovative designs include stylish gardens under glass; floating plants whose roots, visible in clear water, are part of the allure; and miniature landscapes that grow in every type of beautiful tray, container, and basket imaginable. Among the projects are a collection of succulents springing out of a colorful gravel bed; a basket of savory Mediterranean herbs to perk up winter meals; cascading ivy, trained to frame a north-facing window; and a charming miniature tea rose in a jar.
To ensure success, each project includes step-by-step design and planting instructions, a complete checklist of required materials, ongoing care advice, and full-color photography of materials and the completed garden. Exotic orchids, soft grasses, easy-to-grow herbs, and colorful bulbs are among the dozens of popular plants McCreary encourages gardeners to work with in her designs.
For every dedicated gardener who has spent dull winter months longing for the scent of dirt, tabletop gardens are the answer. Their elegance and vitality connect the housebound grower to summer’s cycles of growth.
Book Description
The Peshitta version of the Syriac translation of the Old Testament was made during the first centuries of the Christian era and has been used ever since in the non-western churches of Semitic signature. Much like the Greek translations of the Old Testament, this ancient version is an important source for our knowledge of the text of the Old Testament. In contrast to the manuscripts of most Hebrew traditions, which date from the beginning of the Middle Ages, the extant manuscripts date from the fifth century.

Book Description
The Peshitta of Leviticus deals with the Syriac (Peshitta) text of Leviticus, discussing presuppositions of the manuscripts' scribes as well as the intentions of the translator. Its starting point is the critical edition of the Leiden Peshitta (E.J. Brill, Leiden, 1991). The first part of the book examines the variant readings of the manuscripts, assessing their use in the Leiden Peshitta, and evaluating their interpretative significance. The second part considers causes of resemblance and difference in Peshitta, Targum, and LXX interpretation, ending with comments on other printed Leviticus editions, and the origins of the version. This volume is of particular interest as a study of translation, and the relating of a text to its church origin and context.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting photos!.......2007-05-19
This book contains interesting photos! It includes many of the common landmarks that tourist like to visit (though not all), and shows other sites that tourists rarely see. The large photos are nice.
Breathtaking.......2004-02-16
As an anglophile and collector of British coffee table books, I'd like to say that this book is just terrific. The format is unusual with the short spine and wide pages and shows off the 360 degree photos to good advantage. While not all the photos are of the 360 degree variety, all of them are at the very least interesting and at best absolutely breathtaking. All the historical sites are accounted for as well as some more obscure places like Brixton Market and the Horniman Museum. If you like unusual color photos of this historically fascinating and architecturally beautiful city, this book is for you. It is atypical and wondrous to look upon.
From a London lover.......2003-12-31
From the little bakery of Brick Lane, to St James's Park, this is a very good present to make to people who know and love London. The shots are pretty original and the fact that the photographer actually lives in London gives it more of a personnal touch.
Also check the one about New York.

A Great Read!.......2000-04-11
I first read Maxine Hong Kingston's Woman Warrior when I was in 10th grade and I fell in love with it! I am Asian American myself and I could relate to various aspects in the novel. However, a lot of the novel can be confusing so I was not sure if I had gotten enough out of it. So, when I saw this book, I had to buy it! I wanted to know her thoughts and feelings about the book and everything else. I was not disappointed! This was a great supplement to her novels and a great read in general. If you are a fan of Maxine Hong Kingston, this is a definite must have!
