The nutrition of a vegetative fungal colony can be viewed as a web of interconnected processes. In this volume, the author provides a mechanistic basis to the subject, focusing on processes at the plasma membrane, considering the modulating effects of the fungal wall and describing the fate of nutrients entering the fungus. The major emphasis is physiological, but biomechanical and molecular biological information has been drawn upon as appropriate to reflect the power of the multifaceted approach and encourage such further study. A comprehensive review of what is known for the more commonly studied fungal species is complemented by information on other fungi to provide an indication of the diversity of nutritional processes that exist in the fungal kingdom.

Not for the serious traveller, or any traveller.......2006-08-08

Compared to other Route 66 books, this one rates far below them. I can appreciate the love for the mother road in it, but there's too much fluff. I don't care about what songs the author recommends, or the cars. There's also some glaring mistakes, which could throw you off. If you want to travel '66, this is NOT the book you want to use.

For a "look see" book, OK, but your money would be better spent on something like "Route 66: The Mother Road" by Michael Wallis.

If you want to travel the route, spend you money on "Route 66 Adventure Handbook: Updated and Expanded Third Edition" by Drew Knowles or "Route 66: EZ66 Guide for Travelers" (best choice) by Jerry McClanahan.

If I had it to do over again, I would not have purchased this book.

Get your kicks too!.......2004-03-02

This book has become my introduction to the Mother Road legacy and it was unforgettable experience! Perhaps, its most thrilling feature is in a "stereoscopic" layout of the pages where vintage and contemporary photos neighbor "native" food receipes and period vehicles. Now that I have sensed ambience of the past and have get my kicks I can readily recommend reading this book before, during and after a real trip.

The big little book of Route 66........2002-10-20

It's small but its got it all. Rather than turn out another normal size book on Route 66 the publishers had the great idea of making it pocket size, four by six inches, landscape and with FOUR-HUNDRED all-color pages. I predict that this will be the standard book for those who want to make the trip. Each of the eight states that 66 goes through has a chapter, they start with a simple map, comments about landscape and climate, then the text details what to look for along the way, with the help of historical and contemporary photos, a linear map with places and mileage goes across the top of all of these pages.

Between all the route pages are some lovely spreads of Route 66 Americana which repeat themselves throughout the book, Route Food (pages 174-175 has Red-Hot BBQ Beef Ribs) Transport (168-169 has a 1936 Harley-Davidson) Music of the Road (Woody Guthrie on 156-157) and Famous Sites (Wigwam Village, Holbrook, AZ, on 294-295). The books production is excellent, good choice of photos, well laid out pages (a tip of the hat to designer Phillip Clucas) with colourful graphics behind the text on most of them. The back has a book list, useful resources guide (including websites) and index.

I recently reviewed 'The Final Cut Route 66' by German photographer Gerd Kittel. Eighty-three wonderful photographs of what he saw along 66 and I think it is the perfect book to complement Nick Freeth's travelogue. Kittel has the knack of producing really good color in his photos. Both books do justice to a unique and fascinating bit of America.

Big Book in a Small Package.......2002-05-09

Don't let the size of this book fool you. Approximately the height & width of a post card, it is packed with vibrant full color pictures and information. Archive photos, current conditions of Route 66 icons and roads, and text that is very well written. Even regional culinary receipes from the Mother Road! What more could you ask? An excellent book for both actual and arm chair Route 66 travelers.

a new Branzi.......2000-05-16

The book is divided into 2 sections - the first is an analysis of design in the 90's and the 2nd (last) consists of commentary from the designers on various subjects.

The first section reminded me of the writings of Andrea Branzi in the way that the authors tried to pin down the overarching themes and drivers of 90's (French) design. Work was used largely to dramatize the authors point, rather than as a showcase. The only criticism I would have is that if you weren't familiar with the specific works, there were no visual aids to bring you along.

The second section seemed like a series of interviews repackaged into book format. Sometimes the reponses of the designers conflicted with the analysis in the first section, as well as with eachother. If you're looking for personal anecdotes this is interesting, but did little to shed light on the motivations of the individual designers' works, and less as a collective.

Nonetheless, the first section was golden - well thought out and documented. It did an excellent job of concretizing the abstract essence of the period.

An interesting read.......2000-04-30

Unfortunately the first half of the book on the subject "design in the 90's" really needs to be read by someone familiar with complicated design terms and theories. I found it too draining....a bit much. The second half however was great and includes interviews with some French designers (listed in title) that have collaborated with Philippe Starck. I found what they had to say extremely interesting and current. It gives a great insight into the design discipline and more importantly the designers themselves.

Many of us keep pet animals; we rely on them for companionship and unconditional love. For some people their closest relationships may be with their pets. In the wake of the animal rights movement, some ethicists have started to re-examine this relationship, and to question the rights of humans to "own" other sentient beings in this way. In this engaging and thought-provoking book, Stephen Webb brings a Christian perspective to bear on the subject of our responsibility to animals, looked at through the lens of our relations with pets--especially dogs. Webb argues that the emotional bond with companion animals should play a central role in the way we think about animals in general, and--against the more extreme animal liberationists--defends the intermingling of the human and animal worlds. He tries to imagine what it would be like to treat animals as a gift from God, and indeed argues that not only are animals a gift for us, but they give to us; we need to attend to their giving and return their gifts appropriately. Throughout the book he insists that what Christians call grace is present in our relations with animals just as it is with other humans. Grace is the inclusive and expansive power of God's love to create and sustain relationships of real mutuality and reciprocity, and Webb unfolds the implications of the recognition that animals too participate in God's abundant grace. Webb's thesis affirms and persuasively defends many of the things that pet lovers feel instinctively--that their relationships with their companion animals are meaningful and important, and that their pets have value and worth in themselves in the eyes of God. His book will appeal to a broad audience of thoughtful Christians and animal lovers.

Extremely Insightful.......2000-07-04

I have read virtually everything I can find dealing with theology and animals, because of my strong interest in both, and I find this is the most insightful book in print. Webb offers profound wisdom in his thinking about human/animal relations from a Judeo-Christian perspective, and his analysis of other writers' thoughts is very cogent. This is a serious and challenging book, but it is so well-written that it should be readily accessible to wide audiences.

What Animal Lovers Always Knew.......1998-03-27

I loved this book, especially the section devoted to after-life of animals. I ride endurance horses, (long distance competitive riding) and KNOW what a bond with an animal is. My champion endurance horse and I completed over 3000 miles together before a blood disease claimed his life in January. I've never felt separation like that before. As I have said many times since then, "There are a lot of people I would have rather buried that day than my best friend, my horse" The author captures many of these solid and two-way relationships. My own pastor has a hard time relating to the grace of God shown between humans and their animals. Animal lovers knew it all along!

Such a great resource for plants and how to take care of them. This is my second copy, since my first has gotten a little ragged around the edges.

I have scads of gardening books. When I moved South from Albuquerque and changed zones, I bought a half-dozen more.

As I slowly decorate my new desert I find myself constantly going to this one...rather than the giant tomes that I purchased.

Why? Because Ms. Phillips tells you how to grow the stuff. And, she's culled the zillions of plants down to the best...the easiest...the most forgiving. She tells you why, gives you the best cultivars, suggests companion plants. And, again, tells you why.

Every time I ignore her advice, I'm sorry that I did.

Great pictures and great format. There is a picture of the plant along with all information about the plant on the same page, no need to search to match the plant with its picture.

I liked the information presented in this book but would have liked to see a larger photograph of the plants. Most of the book is black and white with a section of small photographs of the plants. I cannot see leaf definition or perhaps even the look of fruits or blooms. In books of plants that someone like me, from another part of the US, needs more detailed photographs to be truly helpful.

Helping me through the transition.......2004-04-02

I am a novice gardener and native Kansan, and was extremely daunted when moving into my new house made me mistress of a well-established, water-hungry New Mexico garden. By covering each kind of plant individually, with both practical and aesthetic advice, this book has allowed me to proceed with confidence.
Its strengths:
- I have found very few among my existing plantings that I couldn't identify (and care for) based on the descriptions and color photos in this book.
- The coverage includes both xeric and water-hungry plants that are hardy here, which has helped me maintain what I inherited while preparing to transition to a lower water use spread.
Its weaknesses:
- Now that I have survived spring clean-up, I am interested in more generalized landscaping advice that isn't included here. The focus is entirely on specific plants, with only passing reference to subjects such as designing a layout or installing a drip system.

Useful and well-organized info for New Mexico landscaping.......1999-01-10

As a fellow person in the landscape design profession locally, I am pleased with my purchase, though I don't agree with every bit of information in the book. Most important, though, Judith illustrates the subtle, yet important factors that influence how plants can grow sucessfully and where in our region. I have had some different experiences with climate data and some plants (Mesquite is one) than she has, but I highly recommend that natives and new arrivals alike apply the facts in this book to avoid the common plant mistakes made in New Mexico!

Essays reflecting on working photography experiences.......2004-03-04

Pictures via camera reflect not only what the photographer sees, but what he thinks about. The most successful reflect an understanding of things as much as their image, and Jerry Thompson's exploration of the relationship between seeing and thinking in Truth And Photography provides a set of fine duotone photos to illustrate essays reflecting on working photography experiences.

Autobiography/History.......2005-02-23

I was given a copy of this book, with only a pink sugarpaper cover, on a beach in Sri Lanka in 1981. It is still on my bookshelf.

Han Suyin is a half Chinese, half Belgian doctor and writer, who returned to China during the Japanese invasion of her country prior to World War II and the civil war. Her autobiographical account - she was only in her early twenties and married to a member of Chiang Kaishek's coterie - combines the personal with excellent explanations of chinese history, although it does help to have an atlas to hand as you read it.

First published in 1968, the book begs the question how far she felt able to express her true feelings, at the time of the Cultural Revolution, but politically, the novel leans to sympathy with Mao's Red Army during the civil war.

Highly recommended.
