I think I got the first copy of this book. It's like nothing ever published by anybody, including Mr. T. An awesome amassing of information written like only Stienstra can. A must read: The story about his Old Green Canoe in the front of the book.

Very byist- .......2005-09-12
This was a good book for the facts but the writer chooses to be byist against the Europeans. He sends out the message that the Native Americans were PERFECT and the Europeans totally destroyed them. i agree that the Europeans massacred the Indians horribly, which was wrong but the Indians had their own flaws too which the author neglects to put in.

More tripe about how one "man" discovered other humans. The "objective" view of this man as a hero is still present, helping to perpetuate the myth that Natives were not as valuable as the oppressors who came to colonize them. I am not the type to say burn books, but this would make great kindling for the fires of truth. You might be able to use it in a discussion of racism and the epestimologies that help create and foster it. There are plenty of Italian people who were heroes, this person is just not one of them.

Book Description
To celebrate its fiftieth anniversary, the North Carolina Museum of Art plans to stage several special events involving all the arts in the state. As a part of this celebration, the Museum invited some of the state's major writers and poets to contribute responses to works from the Museum's permanent collection. The contributors were asked to submit a previously unpublished poem or a work of short fiction or creative nonfiction that connected the written word with the visual representation. The book that evolved from this project includes new works from forty-five writers and poets. Each written piece appears adjacent to a full-color reproduction of the artistic piece which inspired the writer. The anthology includes 19 poems, 13 non-fiction essays, and 13 fiction pieces. For example, Alan Shapiro responded to the image of a victorious hero on an ancient Greek vase by composing a poem about men weeping_and more generally about notions of sexuality, a subject he has examined in his recent work. Inspired by Milton Avery's "Blue Landscape," Lee Smith wove a haunting tale about a lonely little girl named Daisy who finds solace with an "orchard girl" on a nearby ridge. With The Store of Joys, the Museum has created a lasting tribute to its own collection and to the literary genius for which the state has become so well known.

On March 26th, 2000, I visited the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, where I found this marvelously creative book in their gift shop. Prominent North Carolina authors were asked to choose a work of art from their permanent collection and comment on it.
How I love connections! This book contains a beautiful poem and a scholarly article both inspired by F.C. Frieseke's painting "The Garden Parasol." F.C. Frieseke was my grandfather; the primary figure in the painting portrays his wife, my grandmother Sadie. You can find images of "The Garden Prasol" and many other Frieseke paintings by searching the web.
In this same collection, I found a wonderful poem by James Applewhite, who was my poetry teacher at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. His poem was inspired by Winslow Homer's painting, "Weaning the Calf." I had "chosen" this painting as the one I would most like to take home from the museum (their Frieseke is too big for my condo)!
For several years I lived across the street from another author represented in this book, Fred Chappell, who was then a professor at UNC-G. Although I was not priviledged to take any of his courses, I did enjoy a poetry reading of his in 1973.
I recommend "The Store of Joys" to all lovers of visual arts, literature, North Carolina, and interdisciplinary studies. The reproductions are excellent, and the authors' reactions add so much to our appreciation.

A Genuine Treasure.......1998-12-12
As a fan of the North Carolina Museum of Art since my Elementary days when we would take day-long field trips there this book is a real treat. Some of the museums most farmiliar painting are included, along with a very rich selection of literature. Its fun to compare the responses, especially those that have been derived from the same painting. In one case, The Eye of God by Minnie Evans draws not only the most rich and descriptive narrative of the book, but the coldest of the poems as well. My favorite is the recollections of David Sedaris on his cildhood trips and Mrs. Kingman's colorful guidance through them. This book- as the North Carolina Museum of Art- is truly a store of joys.

It's not often you get to find so many little gems of wisdom and lore mixed in with useless tidbits of trivia and wonderful illustrations that sometimes make you laugh aloud. This book is worth having just because it's so much fun, but it's also worth its weight in gold for helpful gardening hints. If you love gardening and know that some of the best hints are handed down through generations of experience from the people out in the field, you will LOVE this book.

David George calls his novel How Mao Died "reality fiction". Why not? We have reality TV. But he means more by calling his blend of biography, autobiography, history and fiction by this term. This book is a breath of fresh air in a recent spate of books on Mao which would have us believe he was simply a tyrant and murderer: they have been written by people who suffered during the Cultural Revolution and now want to get their own back. But as George reminds us, they are no more true - or false - than the old accounts of Mao the poet-priest. Besides, if Mao was just a tyrant, why did millions of people willingly choose to take up his cause and follow him?
George speaks from the vantage point of somebody who lived and worked in China during the 1970s, was a believer who became disillusioned, and is neither pro nor anti Mao. He avoids the pettiness of "taking sides" in order to pose the crucial questions: "Why did so many believe?" "What happens when we are left disillusioned--is it better to have believed and lost than never to have believed at all?" In the contemporary world where cynicism seems to prevail and to believe is naïve, these questions are more than historical.
All of the main characters in How Mao Died: Edgar Snow (the American journalist who made Mao famous), Yin-Wei (the "Girl with the swallow-tail plaits"), and David George himself had to learn how to live after the dream has faded and it is this which is the great strength of this novel: it faces reality in all its brutality but does not let reality dictate its sad message: How did the swallow lose its tail? Let Yin Wei tell us: "Once they had a single tail like all other birds, but when the winter came and the cold, they huddled in their caves until their tails froze to the walls of their nests. They could not move; they could only sing and they did, very beautifully. People heard them, came to catch them. To get away, they had to flap their wings very hard until they tore their body away from their frozen tail. Now they have two tails - one left, one right, so that whichever way the wind blows, they can find their way home.
When the spring comes and then fades too soon, they remember the winter they lost their tails and the songs they sang..."
How Mao Died is beautifully written, rich and complex: it is a tale of how history is made, how people are mislead but, in the end, a tale of hope; in the end a love story.
