Product Description
This book is the visual record of Lepp's love affair with California's state flower, and his annual migrations to poppy centers where the blooms paint the land with color so brilliant it seemsto have spilled from the sun itself. As a rich tribute to California's heritage and its disappearing wild lands; the book also serves as a reminder to consider carefully what's being lost. In celebration of California's state flower. Wonderful photography!
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful photographs, interesting reading.......2004-12-01
With stunningly beautiful pictures of California poppies from a truly talented photographer, Golden Poppies of California is a visual feast. The state flower of California, it is well represented in this collection of photographs. While it is the primary flower in the book, it also includes other flowers commonly found in the same area as the poppies. While leafing through the book the reader soon comes to realize why this flower would be chosen for the state flower. The author provides the reader with historical and other information on California and the history of the poppy. Golden Poppies of California is recommended for people who enjoy coffee table books, and especially anyone who likes poppies.

Firsthand glimpse into the birth of the US.......2002-04-14
This book provides a firsthand look back at two crucial events in the forming of the United States: American's response to and reasons for fighting against taxation by the British, and arguments about the Constitution.
In the first half, Letters from a Famer in Pennsylvania, John Dickinson takes great care to explain why Americans should oppose all taxes that the British impose merely to raise money, namely the Townshend Acts. Dickinson expresses his concern over precendents being set, and draws heavily on the previous American refusal to pay the Stamp Act. This section was fairly interesting in that it helped explain some of the reasons Americans didn't want to pay British taxes, but it did become fairly repetitve throughout the letters.
In the second half, Letters from the Federal Farmer, Richard Henry Lee puts forth his arguments about the Constitution before it was ratified by the states. Arguments included why state governments should wield more power than the federal government, whether a bill of rights should be included in the Constitution, and why too much power was located in the federal government outlined in the Constitution.
All in all, the book was a fairly difficult read that was boring at times, but it did provide an interesting look into the opinions that shaped the US.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent History Book on Pennsylvania Colony.......2001-01-31
This book presents a thorough but not overwhelming picture of Pennsylvania from its colonization through statehood. It reads like a history book, not a novel, but is well written and flows easily, so that my children did not get tired of hearing it before we finished. Influential people in history and their ideas are integrated into the book so that it seems to be almost a story, though it is written more in the style of a text. Unlike many 'story style' histories, the dates, places, and events are thoroughly presented in this work. The original inhabitants are covered to some extent, with the focus mostly on the Delaware tribe. The black and white illustrations are also interesting and contribute to the interest of the book. This was the first of this series we read, but we intend to read others after the good experience we had with this one!
Book Description
Our founders, reformers, and leaders braved tremendous challenges to establish democracy in America. Authentic documents, easy-to-read text, and history illustrations create compelling portraits of early American life.

Loving, personal, direct, playful, perfectly observant and a little crazy, Avignon crafts a visual critique of society, exposing everyday absurdities from business to love with an apt, sympathetic bite.
The third issue of Attack Delay, a personal magazine in book format, presents current highlights by this hero of modern multitasking in his unmistakable Technicolor cartoon style. In addition to Avignon's own work, "You can't always want what you get" features pages done by guest artists including DJ Kid Koala and musician Angie Reed.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent............2006-02-24
I really enjoyed this one. So much information and so wonderfully presented. Even if you don't like GSP's, you WILL after reading this book!
The New Complete German Shorthaired Pointer.......2000-01-16
Mr. McKowen picked up where C.D.Maxwell left off. This is the breed bible. Mr. McKowen's extensive experience and knowledge of the breed affords novice owners and people researching the breed with a wealth of valuable information. The book also provides veteran owners with a nicely organized reference. Required reading!
gsp forever.......2000-01-12
Robert McKeown gives a through knowledge of the history of the german shorthair without being bias. Robert gives alot of factual data of how the blood lines where developed from imports to what the gsp is today and the future. Robert McKowen includes every type of organization that evaluates our hunting/show partners if its navhda, nstra, field trials, bench shows,or the hunt tests. He has listed every champion from bench to field that has shaped of what the gsp is today in the U.S. If you are a proud owner, breeder, or just wanting to learn about the "greats" that started the german shorthair in the U.S. this book is for you. Great book I really enjoyed reading.
An excellant updated history, especially of the GSP in USA.......1999-06-06
This not a "how to" book, rather an updated story of the German Shorthaired Pointer. Up to date and accurate. The very best since C. Bede Maxwell's fine book from 1982. If you want to know the history and the direction of the breed in America this is the best thing available.
This book is great, but does not tell how to train to hunt.......1998-12-18
This is a great book for the person who wants to know the history of the GSP. There is alot of information on the breed and where it came from and is going. If you think this book is going to give tips on specific training for the GSP it does not!! Over all it is a good book if you want to learn the history of your GSP past and present. This book also gives names and {BLK/WHT} photos of champions.

Book Description
As charming and elegant as the 17th-century original, this groundbreaking herbal guide combines Nicholas Culpeper’s fascinating text with up-to-date information and modern full-color illustrations. Culpeper—a famed astrologer, physician, and author—covered almost 400 herbs and plants from Aconite and Adder’s Tongue to Yew and Yucca. For each entry, he gave both the Latin and common names, details on where to find it, its flowering time, astrology, and medicinal virtues. Following the alphabetical list of herbs comes the inventory of illnesses and their cures, as it appeared in 1649. Many of these plants still occupy a prominent position in the dispensaries of today’s herbalists, so in addition to Culpeper’s entertaining and often caustic comments and descriptions, there are notes on contemporary usage by an established practitioner
Customer Reviews:
a classic book for the student of holistic health!.......1999-04-30
This is a great book with wonderful color illustrations by one of the master practitioners of our Western Medical Tradition. This is one of the few books that identifies each herb with its planet association. This relationship is an important element to an holistic approach to health. "As above so below". "
interesting for the historically minded..........1999-01-27
...but I do not recommend Nicholas Culpepper's prescriptions. It is interesting to read what the 17th century physicians considered to be appropriate remedies and the illustrations are a wonderful aid to identification. However, if you want to practice medicinal herbalism, get a modern book to use in conjunction with Culpepper and take the advice of the modern book if there is a difference.
An Valuable and Even Charming Reference for Herbs.......1999-01-21
It is rare to find an herbal reference guide to herbs so charmingly and exactly illustrated. Gardeners will find the illustrations helpful to see what less familiar herbs look like. But Culpeper's Color Herbal offers much more. Each herb is listed individually with a color illustration, a description, other information, specific exerpts from 16th century herbalist Nicholas Culpepper, and description of modern medicinal uses. This allows the reader, or the herbalist, the unique opportunity to compare traditional uses of the past with modern uses and current scientific research on active compounds. It is interesting to see which herbs science has proven to have medicinal value similar to the old uses. I was surprised, for instance, to find that Culpepper's old remedy for bronchitis, Colt's Foot (a familiar garden weed), is actually the source for a substance used in modern over the counter cough remedies! I was even more surprised when an Eyebright solution stopped a case of conjunctivitis - my first venture into herbal treatments! Descriptions are given for which parts of the herbs are useful medicinally. Appendixes I have not seen elsewhere provide 1) definitions of old time ailments, like the agues, for which old Culpepper prescribed, 2) a listing by ailment which herbs old Cullpepper used for which ailments and 3)a modern listing by ailment of which herbs are considered useful now. All of this information is presented extremely clearly and concisely - about half a page is devoted to each herb - making it an easy reference in a world of complicated herbals. I would not say this is THE total, definitive guide to herbs. It IS an herbal to come back to time and again in my library for reference and just plain pleasure. I recommend it for beginner through intermediate herbalist, those who want to venture into / expand their herb garden into specifics, the history lover and to the curious. A keeper.
Generally a good basic book.......1997-06-25
I really enjoyed this book and I enjoy using it. The drawings of the plants are well done, and usable for basic identification of plants, and I really enjoyed the updated usages of the plants that are shown. This book is worth purchasing but, I would not consider it a all in one reference book if you are interested in using herbs.
For general information and for the historical aspects its a good fun, enlightening book. Well worth buying for your personal library.

Book Description
This volume contains the first critical edition and a complete English translation of the well-known correspondence conducted by the fourteenth-century `sceptic' author, Nicholas of Autrecourt, with Bernard of Arezzo and a Master Giles. In the Introduction the extant manuscripts are analysed and the different positions of Nicholas, Bernard and Giles are discussed; the purport of Giles' reply to Nicholas is, contrary to common opinion, identified as a defence of Aristotelianism rather than of Bernard's `sceptic' views. Two appendices contain the first critical edition of the records of the Avignon trial against Nicholas found in the Vatican Archives, and the "Condemned Articles" with an English translation. The volume is rounded off with extensive indexes, which facilitate the use of the book as a source for the history of fourteenth-century thought.
Book Description
This user-friendly guide to essential skills includes feeding, haltering, tying, grooming, clipping, bathing, braiding, and blanketing. The wealth of practical advice offered is thorough enough for beginners, yet useful for experienced riders improving their skills.

Horse Handling and grooming.......2007-06-22
I needed a book for students getting to know horses for the first time.
This book provided the information they needed in quick and easy slices.
This laid the ground work for more intensive sessions which they will receive later on in their veterinary and general animal care courses.
I am very pleased with this book.
G.Stratton, SGU.
Limited........2007-03-03
This book is good for folks who have a basic knowledge of horses but want a little further advice. People who haven't had lessons or are just starting to work with horses for the most part will get confused easily. I got this book for a friend and while there is plenty of useful information tha main things we were looking for were hoof care. The most useful information I found was the section on tying the horse and approaching the horse. This book is helpful but definately not a complete source. We actually got Horses for Dummies and THAT book had ALOT of helpful information... including information on what you should consider BEFORE you become a horse owner.
Hard to find a good grooming book.......2004-09-15
I bought this book because I thought it would be just as good as another in this series "Getting the most from Riding Lessons". I was really looking for specifics on grooming with highly detailed photos and step by step highly detailed instructions and tips. This book has some of this.
There's a good section on catching, tying, and handling the horse. There is some basic safety information omitted.
The hoof care is completely lacking. There is only information on how to lift and support your horses feet. This should be a VERY detailed section of the book considering how important it is to a horse.
Daily grooming info is only OK.
Washing section is acceptable to good.
Clipping section is good but doesnt cover special clipping patterns.
Mane and tail care and braiding is good.
No leg wrap information is included.
No transport of horse information is included.
This all said - it's really hard to find a great grooming book.
Beginner-Great Picture Guide.......2004-02-24
This book matches exactly what the title says it is providing the beginner with the basics of handling and grooming on a horse that is use to both (in my mind set it pretains to a very gentle well trained horse that is use to a lot of handling, like someone else stated a sound horse).
The pictures and text appear to be complete on how to do things right and it's my kind of book, no long winded, wasted or unneeded words to make a bigger book thus wasting my time or book shelf space.
It does just cover the basics on how to do it (not with a horse that is unruley) and on handling you will quickly out-grow the book. It does contain more information on grooming than it does handling so if you are new at that it should be very helpful.
Waste of Money.......2003-11-08
I condsider myself a beginner. This book is very simplistic.
I learned most of these things in the first month of taking lessons. If you have a minimal amount of knowledge, this book would be a waste. Don't waste your time or money. I wish I hadn't.

The arts somehow survive when all else has vanished.......2004-10-22
In this magisterial autobiography, Josef von Sternberg reflects about his personal career, film and its history and art.
Von Sternberg will always be remembered for one of the most impressive movies of all times 'Der blaue Engel', but his career covers the sound and silent movie period.
It is a very revealing book, not about his personal life, but about his professional viewpoints and struggles.
His actor's direction was based on a penetrating insight into the real human nature. First, he considered that 'the guinea pig of the artist is his own self' and secondly, that 'the average human being lives behind an impenetrable veil and will disclose his deep emotions only in a crisis which robs him of control'.
His professional life was an enduring fight with
(1) the film studios and its producers. He knew their blatant commercialism: 'If a snail were to offer a contribution of value to Hollywood, it would be located instantly'.
(2) his actors (an E. Jannings or a C. Laughton behaved like bad children on the set. A notable exception was his miraculous actress Marlene Dietrich.)
(3) his rivals within the director's guild.
and ultimately when the movie was produced (4) the moral establishment and its servile movie critics.
Von Sternberg understood the profound impact of the film medium, which revealed 'the real world where wealth and poverty live side by side, and where cruelty and indifference can no longer be ignored.' The medium has an amoral basis: 'the strongest appeal to the masses was the simplest one: the formula always revolves around sex and its biological associate, violence. ... One bond that links all audiences is the animal in man.'
He also gives us a penetrating portrait of some of the greatest masters of cinema: D.W. Griffith ('remove these 10000 horses a trifle to the right'), C. Chaplin ('the comic side of humiliation') or E. von Stroheim ('the intensity of his actor's direction').
His ultimate goal was to create 'art', for 'it is easier to kill than to create.'
The overall picture shows us von Sternberg as a noble, passionate, honest, craftful and extremely intelligent movie director.
This autobiography is part thriller, part melo, part drama, part psychoanalysis.
It is an essential read, not only for the film historian.
Sternberg on life, the movies, and Dietrich........2001-08-12
Full of cynical, razor-sharp and often very funny opinions. It's so one-sided, however, that I came away very curious to read what Dietrich herself thought about their relationship-- preferably in her own words.
Sternberg was definitely quite a character, and his autobiography is vastly entertaining.
