Fabric Glossary, Third Edition

ASIN: 013098549X |
Book Description
This illustrated fabric dictionary explores the fascinating and satisfying characteristics of the multitude of fabrics available today. Comprehensive lists of fabrics for many uses are given, and over 600 names and terms are illustrated and/or explained. It provides a place for actual fabric swatches, and gives information about mounting swatches. Cerlox binding allows the book to lie flat when open. A comprehensive overview starts the book; it explains how to use the glossary, fiber families, fabric weights, and end-use categories. A section called Fabric Files follows, with notes on mounting swatches, alphabetically-listed fabric files, and references and resources. This book is an excellent resource for use on the job for those in textiles, textile marketing, and the fashion industry because of its clever layout and wealth of information.Customer Reviews:

Good Text, But No Color.......2000-06-28
The text seemed to be very thorough and all fabric types are covered. For the price, I would have expected color photos of the swatches since it is difficult to judge texture from black and white. If you don't mind investing [more money] for the swatches, you'll be happy with this book.

The Fashion System
Roland Barthes Manufacturer: University of California Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0520071778 |
Book Description
In his consideration of the language of the fashion magazine--the structural analysis of descriptions of women's clothing by writers about fashion--Barthes gives us a brief history of semiology. At the same time, he identifies economics as the underlying reason for the luxuriant prose of the fashion magazine: "Calculating, industrial society is obliged to form consumers who don't calculate; if clothing's producers and consumers had the same consciousness, clothing would be bought (and produced) only at the very slow rate of its dilapidation."Customer Reviews:
an important book but hard to read.......2005-08-19
Center/Fold.......2000-06-13
For the reader, it's important to place the book into some sort of context, as Context is Barthes' entire position when he insists that in relation to popular imagery, text "arrests the level of reading at its fabric, at its belt, at the accessory which adorns it" (13). Barthes' idea that the language used by magazine writers does not comment upon but rather *creates* Fashion arouses some questions about certain social centerpieces in, for example, popular (once "folk") music: Janis Joplin to Madonna to Britney Spears. While Barthes clear interest is a structuralized definition of Fashion, not women, studying Barthes' book may help us understand at a more analytical level just what these women "mean" as they are mediated through imagery and arrested by their respective (worn and written) articles. Barthes is crucial for anybody who has ever noticed that, compared to that which accompanied artists of Joplin's caliber , the accompanying texts of contemporary magazines read, more often than not, like a report of Time Temperature and Date.
Furthermore, the book certainly becomes enjoyable for the more fantastic-minded who could envision a day when fashion magazines no longer have to rely on flamboyant nudity, tasteful or otherwise, or suggestive postures, but wherein nudity and erotic positions are implied in a truly Barthean, truly erotic manner: by the fact that all text has been stripped bare. After all, even in a picture-mag where there is no writing, there is still, if one reads Barthes, *writing*. This reviewer would imagine that in Barthes' eyes, the old fashioned critique of the ironic incongruities between the image and the text of other vestments of fashion (such as shampoo commercials whose orgiastic imagery and sounds have nothing to do with the actual product) could be easily solved by one magazine, of any kind, that had no writing at all but consisted entirely of centerfolds.

Gardening Indoors with H.I.D. Lights
George F. Van Patten , and Alyssa F. Bust Manufacturer: Van Patten Pub ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1878823213 |
Book Description
Six chapters in over 168 pages cover light and it's relationship to plants, including, photosynthesis, photoperiodism, phototropism and light intensity. This book explains in detail the differences between sunlight and artificial light. Advantages of mercury vapor, metal halide and high pressure sodium lamps are detailed. A light bulb chart is included and explained in detail. Choosing, using and all details of HID lights in book.Customer Reviews:
It's okay. Some great information, but cluttered........2002-07-20
The book is a mixed bag of great information and cluttered lists of data. The major theme of the book wanders about. Some of the discussions contradict each other. For example, Van Patten does a masterful job describing why useful light for plants should not be measured in lumens. But then he goes ahead and displays his huge listing of light readings in lumens. Why? You made your point, use PAR Watts.
In another section, Van Patten decribes every possible detail about horticultural lamps and reflector systems, but draws no summary with a specific list of brands and models. Don't get me wrong, he lists lots of data. Pages and pages of spreadsheet like lumen data for over 115 models of bulbs. Pages and pages of 54 three dimensional charts. Yah, great, you did lots of research - but I don't need to see all the raw data. Just tell me which bulb I should buy. Maybe give me a top ten list. Should I really care what the lumens are for the 97th best bulb?
Many conclusions are very vague. For example Van Patten actually writes, "we still do not know which lamp is best". Gee, that a great reason to write a book.
I'm torn as how to rate this book. The book contains many jewels of information that are well researched and finely written. Some of Van Patten's findings are exciting, extremely interesting, and even thought provolking. But in between is a littered jumble of confusing tables and charts. It's disorganized. There are lots of typographical errors throughout. He should have hired a book editor before publishing this (or hired a smarter one).
If you plan to garden indoors with HID lights, you must buy this book (you have no other choice but this book, because there are no other texts available). The book is most valuable to purchase BEFORE you select a HID system. It will save you from making a costly mistake.
PS: I use two HID lamps, a 400 watt Agrosun and a 400 watt Sunmaster Warm Deluxe. Both are installed in identical Hydrofarm Super Grow Wing Systems. I love the results - I can grow anything!

Mao and the Chinese Revolution (Interlink Illustrated Histories)

Book Description
It has been more than a century since the birth of Mao Zedong. From the collapse of the old Chinese Empire in 1912 to the foundation of the People's Republic in 1949, his history is linked with that of contemporary China, and beyond national borders, with the history of communism as well. His version of guerilla warfare and revolution resulted in the construction of a socialist society that became a model of socialism throughout the world. Both a tyrant and rebel, Mao wanted to rule through revolution. Yet the Big Leap Forward (1958) and the Cultural Revolution (1966) each plunged China into chaos without saving it from totalitarianism. After 1978, de-Maoization and economic reforms by Deng Xiaoping helped heal the country's wounds, but the future yet remains uncertain.
Whether to be an empire united or broken, serenely "open" or in conflict, democratic or authoritarian, egalitarian or prosperous-so many lingering questions remain of those that Mao and his generation began asking nearly a century ago. Was the Maoist Revolution futile? Would China have been better off without Mao-and is such a thing imaginable? AUTHOR BIO: Yves Chevrier is a professor of modern and contemporary Chinese studies at the School of Eastern Languages (INALCO) and at the Paris Institute of Political Studies. He is the author of numerous books on 20th-century China.
