5 out of 5 stars Old dogs can learn new tricks!.......2003-03-27

My husband travels to Los Angeles often for business
so he knows a lot about the city but I went for the
first time on his last trip. Since he was going to be
in meetings a lot I was worried about being on my own
so I bought this LA for Dummies guide and I'm so glad
I did! It was fun to read and so informative - it
even showed my husband the "LA expert" a few tricks.
    I totally recommend it!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2003-03-27

We visited Los Angeles for the first time recently and were worried about what we had heard - that the city is a big sprawling mess, difficult to get around, etc. All of which is true, but this book made it less intimidating and actually a lot of fun. We took the author's advice to heart and wound up not feeling like dummies at all! This is a great book for the first time visitor.

4 out of 5 stars Great for anyone visiting or living here.......2003-02-04

Totally agree about the locals comment. I just moved here from San Francisco and found great stuff in the book to make me feel like a native. Well-written, funny, entertaining, and a great resource for anyone visiting or living here!

5 out of 5 stars Good For Locals Too.......2003-01-28

Some friends of mine from high school were coming to visit me here in LA and bought this book and had a great vacation, largely due to the terrific advice given in it. LA is a big sprawling mess of a city and the book helps narrow it down to a manageable size, especially for first time visitors. The surprising part was when I looked at the book while they were here - the stuff I learned on restaurants, attractions, and more that I never knew existed was amazing. It's opened my eyes to a whole new LA. Excellent all the way around.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Leave Home Without It.......2003-01-27

This guidebook is witty, useful, and trail-breaking.
Mary Herczog takes Los Angeles and somehow makes it fun, organized, and not scary. What I liked best about it, she focuses on things most people miss, the sort of thing that you absolutely want to know about if you're going there without any kind of inside knowledge or friends in town, and she makes it all so fascinating and entertaining to read about. You can have a good read here even if you're not going to LA anytime in the foreseeable future.

Also she knows where all the really cool places are. And I know the title says "For Dummies" but obviously she's not, and she doesnt' treat her readers as dummies either. A terrific book.
    Highly recommended.

      Book Description

This illustrated fabric dictionary explores the fascinating and satisfying characteristics of the multitude of fabrics available today. Comprehensive lists of fabrics for many uses are given, and over 600 names and terms are illustrated and/or explained. It provides a place for actual fabric swatches, and gives information about mounting swatches. Cerlox binding allows the book to lie flat when open. A comprehensive overview starts the book; it explains how to use the glossary, fiber families, fabric weights, and end-use categories. A section called “Fabric Files” follows, with notes on mounting swatches, alphabetically-listed fabric files, and references and resources. This book is an excellent resource for use on the job for those in textiles, textile marketing, and the fashion industry because of its clever layout and wealth of information.

It has places to attach sample of fabric so you can feel, touch, and learn about them. It is organized alphabetically which is nice if you know what fabric you are looking for. It should have an extra source to look up by the weave of fabric.

      5 out of 5 stars all good.......2007-09-11

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Wonderful Reference.......2004-03-13

Fantastic book! One that is extremely useful and one that I take everywhere with me. Perfect for new designers acquiring fabric sense. I know several firms where this book is a staple reference guide. A+++++

3 out of 5 stars Good Text, But No Color.......2000-06-28

I was a little disappointed that all of the pictures were blackand white. In order for this book to be useful to me, I would have topay [approx. $20.] plus shipping and handling to get the actual swatches used in this reference book.

The text seemed to be very thorough and all fabric types are covered. For the price, I would have expected color photos of the swatches since it is difficult to judge texture from black and white. If you don't mind investing [more money] for the swatches, you'll be happy with this book.

      Book Description

In his consideration of the language of the fashion magazine--the structural analysis of descriptions of women's clothing by writers about fashion--Barthes gives us a brief history of semiology. At the same time, he identifies economics as the underlying reason for the luxuriant prose of the fashion magazine: "Calculating, industrial society is obliged to form consumers who don't calculate; if clothing's producers and consumers had the same consciousness, clothing would be bought (and produced) only at the very slow rate of its dilapidation."

3 out of 5 stars an important book but hard to read.......2005-08-19

I love fashion theory writings. I really do. And i know this is a seminal text in fashion theory. But man, oh man, is it a doozy! I'd give this book a 5 for the concepts, but a 1 for the ease of understanding. It is really hard to plough through - it is translated from French so features some tortuous sentence structure, and feels like the writings of a guy who really loves to read his own work; the higher the word count the better. I feel that it is work like this that leads people to view academic writing as necessarily dry, dense, verbose and pretentious, when there are amazing theory writers out there who are accessible and interesting to read.

OK, admittedly a lot of this style is because of the era in which it was written; maybe a little because of the gender of its writer, and a lot because of the complexity and originality of the ideas Barthe is illuminating. But I would strongly recommend leaving this book until graduate level. Undergrads are better off with any of the contemporary writers in fashion theory, gender or cultural studies who have addressed Barthe's ideas in simple language.

      4 out of 5 stars Center/Fold.......2000-06-13

For any reader who has had a father that read *Playboy* "for the articles," even Barthes' highly analytical approach to the relation between image and text--which he insists *produces* Fashion or "real clothing"--can be funny. I.e., reading in translation the American reader may not identify so much with the eccentricities of Barthes' style so much as his choice of subject. Barthes' work remains entirely relevant, even though the book was published in 1967--the decade where fashion models withered, along with any grand sense of ethics on the part of commercial artists, clothing designers, and filmmakers, down to nothing. Perhaps Barthes would say this Nothing was a *commentary.* Perhaps not. But certain details of Barthes' analysis hold very interesting still: for example, the fact that Barthes refers to the way the "written-garment" in a layout calls attention to specific portions of the "image-garment" as "amputations" (15).

For the reader, it's important to place the book into some sort of context, as Context is Barthes' entire position when he insists that in relation to popular imagery, text "arrests the level of reading at its fabric, at its belt, at the accessory which adorns it" (13). Barthes' idea that the language used by magazine writers does not comment upon but rather *creates* Fashion arouses some questions about certain social centerpieces in, for example, popular (once "folk") music: Janis Joplin to Madonna to Britney Spears. While Barthes clear interest is a structuralized definition of Fashion, not women, studying Barthes' book may help us understand at a more analytical level just what these women "mean" as they are mediated through imagery and arrested by their respective (worn and written) articles. Barthes is crucial for anybody who has ever noticed that, compared to that which accompanied artists of Joplin's caliber , the accompanying texts of contemporary magazines read, more often than not, like a report of Time Temperature and Date.

Furthermore, the book certainly becomes enjoyable for the more fantastic-minded who could envision a day when fashion magazines no longer have to rely on flamboyant nudity, tasteful or otherwise, or suggestive postures, but wherein nudity and erotic positions are implied in a truly Barthean, truly erotic manner: by the fact that all text has been stripped bare. After all, even in a picture-mag where there is no writing, there is still, if one reads Barthes, *writing*. This reviewer would imagine that in Barthes' eyes, the old fashioned critique of the ironic incongruities between the image and the text of other vestments of fashion (such as shampoo commercials whose orgiastic imagery and sounds have nothing to do with the actual product) could be easily solved by one magazine, of any kind, that had no writing at all but consisted entirely of centerfolds.

Elinor Donahue is a superb storyteller. This little book holds you lovingly in its grip from the first page to the last, through a journey of extraordinary relationships between people and their pets. You will laugh and cry and be amused and entertained throughout. Anyone who has loved or been loved by a family pet will recognize as familiar the range of emotions involved in this unique bond, and will be intrigued by the inexplicable behavior of animals in these true stories. With a light and whimsical style the author creates an abundance of visual images, and combined with some truly gripping stories, makes for fascinating reading.

What can I say, Joyce has done it again! Pre-Happy Meal toys were always a mystery, and people never had a real idea of what they were all about. But now, thanks to this book, the mystery has now been eliminated. There are pictures of just about anything and everything that you could imagine. There are even McDonald's Newspaper Articles and Advertisements from the 50's through the 70's. The details on these toys and giveaways are VERY thorough and VERY accurate. This book brings fun, and gives you more to look for to expand your McCollection!

4 out of 5 stars It's okay. Some great information, but cluttered........2002-07-20

Book contains about 154 pages and is divided into 6 sections. The sections discuss Light, Artificial Light, HID Lamps, Reflectors, Setup, and Electricity Basics. Appendices include Radiant Energy, Requirements of Plants, Troubleshooting, Types of Lamps, Glossary, and Index.

The book is a mixed bag of great information and cluttered lists of data. The major theme of the book wanders about. Some of the discussions contradict each other. For example, Van Patten does a masterful job describing why useful light for plants should not be measured in lumens. But then he goes ahead and displays his huge listing of light readings in lumens. Why? You made your point, use PAR Watts.

In another section, Van Patten decribes every possible detail about horticultural lamps and reflector systems, but draws no summary with a specific list of brands and models. Don't get me wrong, he lists lots of data. Pages and pages of spreadsheet like lumen data for over 115 models of bulbs. Pages and pages of 54 three dimensional charts. Yah, great, you did lots of research - but I don't need to see all the raw data. Just tell me which bulb I should buy. Maybe give me a top ten list. Should I really care what the lumens are for the 97th best bulb?

Many conclusions are very vague. For example Van Patten actually writes, "we still do not know which lamp is best". Gee, that a great reason to write a book.

I'm torn as how to rate this book. The book contains many jewels of information that are well researched and finely written. Some of Van Patten's findings are exciting, extremely interesting, and even thought provolking. But in between is a littered jumble of confusing tables and charts. It's disorganized. There are lots of typographical errors throughout. He should have hired a book editor before publishing this (or hired a smarter one).

If you plan to garden indoors with HID lights, you must buy this book (you have no other choice but this book, because there are no other texts available). The book is most valuable to purchase BEFORE you select a HID system. It will save you from making a costly mistake.

PS: I use two HID lamps, a 400 watt Agrosun and a 400 watt Sunmaster Warm Deluxe. Both are installed in identical Hydrofarm Super Grow Wing Systems. I love the results - I can grow anything!

4 out of 5 stars Getting bright before starting grow lights.......2000-11-12

"Gardening Indoors with HID Lights" is a cross between a technical manuscript and an How To book for beginners. With a bachelors in cellular biology, this book was perfect for me. It explained how plants react to different parts of the light spectrum for different parts of their growth cycle. It steered me away from what would have been an ineffective fluorescent to maintain my citrus trees during the snowy winter. Instead the authors skillfully discuss the relationship of cost, watts, and effective indoor growth area for what is essentially artificial sunlight. As a novice, I decided not to take all their advice about an indoor lighting system, since I wasn't sure it would really work as advertised. But the practical science which is woven throughout this book would have been an equally effective guide for a much more elaborate set up. The salesperson where I ended up purchasing my HID system did not recommend this book since it was "too technical." I myself would recommend this book to anyone who studies their gardening and purchases other garden books. A high intensity discharged lighting system will cost several hundred dollars. My system had no information with it guide me in it's use. This book neatly fills the gap.

                      Book Description

Nagisa Oshima is generally regarded as the most important Japanese film. director after Kurosawa and is one of Japan's most productive and celebrated postwar artists. His early films represent the Japanese New Wave at its zenith, and the films he has made since (including In the Realm of the Senses and Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence) have won international acclaim. The more than 40 writings that make up this intellectual autobiography reveal a rare conjunction of personal candor and political commitment. Entertaining, concise, disarmingingly insightful, they trace in vivid and carefully articulated detail the development of Oshima's theory and practice.

The writings are arranged in chronological order and cover the period from the mid-1950s to the mid-1980s. Following a historical overview of the contemporary Japanese cinema, a substantial section articulates the theoretical and political rationale of 0shima's film production. Among many other topics considered in his essays, Oshima questions the economics of film production, the ethics of the documentary film, censorship (both political and sexual), and the relation of aesthetics and social taboos.

4 out of 5 stars Vital writings on cinema..........2007-07-08

Oshima on Oshima - the bulk of this extremely intriguing collection of translated essays details his 60s heyday, with 1976 as the rough cutoff point.

The essays detailing years before the start of his film career are the most intriguing - childhood, grade school and university - as Oshima devotes considerable detail to intellectual influences that drifted into his life beginning at a very early age; this writing recontextualizes quite a bit of his cinematic output, which seems far more organic now than it would first appear to be. Writings touching upon his entry into the film industry are similarly insightful; throughout Oshima does less political theorizing than the title would imply, instead gravitating towards material that provides additional personal and historical context for his startling and intuitive films.

Oshima held a fascination with 'outsiders' of all varieties - in the hands of many filmmakers this is either a camp affectation, or a stylistic and symbolic one, but the writing here pulls another theme from Oshima's body of work - strong interests in human rights, the persistence of discrimination and arbitrary social hierarchies in seemingly developed societies, oppression and personal liberty, and these interrelated themes are very consistent through several films, all made during the 1960s. His writing here detailing trips to South Korea makes these concerns more explicit, and after a read through these pages, certain films - 'Death By Hanging' in particular - seem less like new wave stuntmaking, and more like some of the more urgent protest missives to emerge from the 1960s.

I would have liked to see a bit more detailing of the technical process behind certain films - the frenetic creation of 'Death By Hanging' is discussed at some length, which is very welcome. But it is clear from viewing several of his provocative and very tightly-constructed late 60s films that Oshima is one of the more formidable film theorists to emerge during or since the 1960s - making use of bold stylistic experimentalism ("Diary Of A Shinjuku Thief"), reality-based psychological dramas ("Boy" and "Ceremony"), or an overlapping mix of both ("In The Realm Of The Senses" and "Death By Hanging"). Thus a bit more technical discussion of his varied structural ideas and theories would have been a nice addition here.

But this remains a vital bit of film writing from one of the more genuinely iconoclastic filmmakers out there.

                      -David Alston

                      3 out of 5 stars Fascinating insights into Oshima's screenwriting * directing.......1998-11-03

This book is written specifically for those who are interested particularly in the filmmaking of Nagisa Oshima's earlier films. I was a bit disappointed to find that there was little (if anything) written about MERRY CHRISTMAS, MR LAWRENCE (1983), EMPIRE OF PASSION (1980), and MAX MON AMOUR (1988?-his only French parlour comedy). Otherwise, there is plenty written about Mr. Oshima's aspirations and political/social ideas which account for his unusual and sometimes unpopular films. Of interest to most readers will be the chapter concerning IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES (1976), his drama (Oshima describes how he questioned his male actors, asking if they could 'arise' in front of a camera-most of the Japanese potentials were intimidated). Not at all like other Japanese filmmakers in terms of some of his opinions and methods, Oshima certainly stands out as the eccentric director of the Japanese 'new wave'. Note that the book is several years old, so it does not cover films after EMPIRE OF PASSION.

                              Book Description

It has been more than a century since the birth of Mao Zedong. From the collapse of the old Chinese Empire in 1912 to the foundation of the People's Republic in 1949, his history is linked with that of contemporary China, and beyond national borders, with the history of communism as well. His version of guerilla warfare and revolution resulted in the construction of a socialist society that became a model of socialism throughout the world.

Both a tyrant and rebel, Mao wanted to rule through revolution. Yet the Big Leap Forward (1958) and the Cultural Revolution (1966) each plunged China into chaos without saving it from totalitarianism. After 1978, de-Maoization and economic reforms by Deng Xiaoping helped heal the country's wounds, but the future yet remains uncertain.

Whether to be an empire united or broken, serenely "open" or in conflict, democratic or authoritarian, egalitarian or prosperous-so many lingering questions remain of those that Mao and his generation began asking nearly a century ago. Was the Maoist Revolution futile? Would China have been better off without Mao-and is such a thing imaginable? AUTHOR BIO: Yves Chevrier is a professor of modern and contemporary Chinese studies at the School of Eastern Languages (INALCO) and at the Paris Institute of Political Studies. He is the author of numerous books on 20th-century China.
