It also includes plants that would produce the same effect but will be detailed in other chapters. For each plant, signs, pathology, treatment, and problems and causes are discussed followed by general information on the plant, keys to identification of that plant, illustrations, and location maps.

The hefty price tag of this paperback may limit it to college-level collections, but there it's appropriate and important for any collection strong in environmental science, veterinary science, agricultural science or botany. The organ or body system affected by the plant poison serves as a point of reference here, with chapters organized with vets, livestock owners and students in mind. Each coverage begins with the system and moves to an explanation of the toxic plants that can affect it. Color photos of each plant round out the details. An invaluable reference.

Excellent sourcebook on poisonous plants.......2002-09-10
Toxic Plants of North America is a grandiose work, fruit of many years of intense labor, as one can confirm just by leafing through its hunderds of pages. More than just an academic resource work, this treatise is one of the very few that can actually be used as a textbook for a course on poisonous plants.
Burrows and Tyrl's book is one of the most ambitious projects ever to be undertaken about North American toxic flora since 1964. Indeed a newer source of information was long overdue.
The book has also many salient features including its clarity, objectivity and a usually neglected feature in other publications, which is the inclusion of pertinent information about poisonous plants of Mexico.
I highly recommend this book as a text for courses dealing with poisonous plants offered by Universities in their colleges of Animal Science, Range Ecology and Veterinary Medicine.
Toxic Plants of North America is destined to be a definitive work on the subject.

BEST IN CLASS, THOUGH NOT THAT GOOD.......2006-04-02
Among all guidebooks I have seen on the Amazon, this one did the best job of gathering information and putting it in an easily readable fashion.
The book is divided among the different countries in the region. Knowing the attractions mainly of the Brazilian Amazon, I can say that about half of the businesses, phone numbers, addresses, etc. are outdated. It is to be expected, since this guide was published 4 yrs ago. The Brazilian section is good, with good advice especially on the surroundings of Manaus. It also provides good advice on what to bring and what to look for in the Amazon, which is useful and timeless.
To someone considering a trip to different places in the Amazon, if you want to get just one guide, I would recommend this one. If you are going to just one place, perhaps as a second guide book this would help, but I would not rely too heavily on the companies listed there, many of them no longer exist.
An excellent overview of the region.......2004-09-17
I was lucky to stumble onto this book, which is relatively difficult to find in most chain bookstores. It is an excellent trip planning resource, although it is likely that you will want to supplement it with country-specific guides or one of the "shoestring" type guides for the South America (e.g., Lonely Plant, Footprints). The book provides useful overviews of each country in the region with attention to major transport/tourism hubs and to major attractions and parks. The guide will help you focus a trip on one or more countries in the region. It also is helpful in terms of considering how to navigate adjacent countries in terms of transport, visas, etc. The overviews of flora and fauna provide more information than you will find in other guidebooks. The lodges and travel companies listed tend to skew upscale, although they do mention budget lodgings in cities like Manaus and Iquitos. The number of hotels and restaurants surveyed in any one place tends to be limited, so you'll want a country-specific guide to provide more depth. The value of this guide is its overview of the Amazon region, however, it's likely that you'll want a country-specific guide esp. if you are a budget traveler. I found the Lonely Planet Brazil guide to be the best of the major Brazil guides (it also takes in the Triple Frontier area with Peru & Colombia and Roraima which borders Venezuela) for the Brazilian Amazon, although it has some deficiencies for other places like Rio & Salvador.

Holistic Guide to the Amazon Region.......1999-04-08
This is a marvelous guidebook, replete with useful and interesting information on any and all aspects of Amazonia, from the flora and fauna to the people and culture. It only is lacking in one respect -- coverage of Brazilian music, which is another "environmental" element that surrounds you wherever you travel in Brazil, from Manaus to Rio. For that, I also recommend a book called "The Brazilian Sound," which is an excellent musical guidebook.

As an author who has published two guidebooks myself (and as a critical reader and user of guidebooks), I highly recommend Harris and Hutchison's The Amazon. This book is really two guides in one: Practical advice on where to go, where to stay, what to see and do, etc. and a valuable natural history companion. Biologist Roger Harris provides fascinating and highly readable information about the flora, fauna, and cultures you may encounter in a well-organized fashion. Not to mention thumbnail sketches of history, climate, language, health issues and other subjects of interest. The writing is rich enough to classify it as armchair travel but the hard information provided makes it practical and well worth the reasonable investment. We bought it before our trip, used it extensively during the expedition, and still refer to it now that we are home. As a writer, I'm envious of the product; as a reader I'm satisfied.

In this major contribution to an understanding of the development of Ottoman architecture, Godfrey Goodwin focuses on the work of one of the greatest sixteenth-century architects, Sinan Abdulmennan, showing how he revolutionized inherited Ottoman building methods, a tradition based on structure by an awareness of the psychology of space.
Until Sinan, Ottoman architecture had been a reading of parts. He broke down the distinct forms that had created a certain rigidity, thus freeing interior space and interior form simultaneously.
Underlying his architectural concepts are the mathematical theories and practices of Classical Greece. Sinan shared these ideals of proportion and balance with builders in the West indeed; the author argues that the work of Sinan and that of Bramante and Palladio must be seen as part of the same intellectual revolution.
This is not a life of Sinanvery few biographical materials are available. Goodwin nevertheless shows the importance of the architect's long years in the army and his experience of bridges, siege-works, fortifications, and the behaviour of stone and masonry before he was appointed Royal Architect in 1538.
Goodwin bases his analysis on a detailed comparative study of certain of Sinan's buildings, the supreme example being the imaginative leap represented by the mosque of Selim ll at Edirne, second capital of the Ottoman Empire.
Of particular importance are the chapters on light and space; the dome, the minaret and the apsidal form; decoration and tiles.
The text is illustrated by photographs, plans and elevations of many of Sinan's works ranging from the grandiose Suleymaniye complex in Istanbul to the experimental Kilic Ali Pasha mosque. Of outstanding interest are the plates by the nineteenth-century German architect Gurlitt, many of which show features before later restoration.
