Book Description
Hawaii's Ferns and Fern Allies is the first comprehensive survey of Hawaii's ferns to be published in more than 100 years. The book covers endemic, indigenous, and naturalized ferns and fern allies (including rare and endangered taxa), providing dichotomous keys, basionyms and synonyms, technical descriptions and distributions, a glossary, and statistical information. The author addresses unresolved taxonomic problems and offers suggestions for future research. He includes information from Hawaiian folklore and mythology, describes uses of ferns by native Hawaiians, and updates Hawaiian common names. More than 100 line drawings illustrate all 222 species, varieties, and forms, and some hybrids.
The volume is based on extensive fieldwork, studies of herbarium collections worldwide, and consultations with pteridologists, local ecologists, and collectors. It provides the much-needed scientific basis for a new, worldwide appreciation of Hawaiian ferns and fern allies and for major efforts to protect and conserve them. This well-researched and highly readable book will be enthusiastically received by amateur and professional naturalists, fern enthusiasts, and professional botanists.

Best guide available for Hawaiian native ferns and their allies.......2007-09-06
As complete a guide as possible (so far) for identifying the myriad of ferns and their allies on the Hawaiian Islands. Far more complete than any other available publication.
At last, a summary of Hawaii's little known ferns.......2006-11-23
It is said that the most thoroughly investigated natural environment on Earth is the countryside within a day's walk of Oxford University. But the Hawaiian islands, the greatest natural history "laboratory" on Earth, are well up on that list.
Nevertheless, there is so much here to know that some sectors of the natural world have been skimped. One is the ferns, which until now have not received a comprehensive review since before World War I.
In "Hawaii's Ferns and Fern Allies," Daniel Palmer has his work cut out for him. Worldwide, many families with representatives in Hawaii have not been thoroughly studied. Here, there are quite a number of doubtful species, and considerable confusion due to misnaming or giving the same name to different species over the decades.
One endemic species, Doryopteris takeuchii, was not discovered until 1988, though its location is hardly obscure -- it grows all over Diamond Head.
Palmer, a dermatologist and tree farmer who divides his time between Hawaii and Michigan, tentatively concludes that there are 200 species of ferns and 21 allies (such as Lycopodiums) in the islands.
Unlike flowering plants, where aliens now outnumber natives, the ferns of Hawaii are almost all (85 percent) natives. Of these, nearly three-quarters are known only from these islands.
Only a handful of native ferns are thought to be extinct, but 29 species out of 144 are either rare or designated as endangered.
Most, from tiny plants that are hardly ever noticed, to tree ferns, live in wet areas, but a few species have made homes on sunburnt rocks, even at high altitudes.
Another few are aquatic, including Salvinia molesta, a floating plant that has become a serious weed, along with a small number of other imports.
Most aliens are not weedy, but the popular staghorn ferns (Platyceriums) are "potentially serious invaders of native forests." Platycerium bifurcatum was found spreading into the wild on Maui in 1991.
The Hawaiians, of course, have the longest experience with native ferns, some of which served as food, as medicine, as a source of glue for making up kapa (bark cloth, also known as tapa) and in rituals.
Curiously, though, the fern most often seen in Hawaiian cultural contexts today, Physmatosorus grossus, is an alien.
Called laua`e, this fern smells similar to maile (a fragrant native forest vine) and is used by dancers and in lei.
But Palmer says this may be a confusion. A scented plant called laua`e is referred to in old Kauai lore, but it may not even have been a fern.
William Hillebrand, who attempted to treat all known Hawaii ferns in his flora of 1888, did not include P. grossus, and the oldest example in scientific collections dates only from 1919.
Apparently, P. grossus was brought in from the South Pacific within the past century and because it happened to have an odor similar to maile, the name migrated over. The original laua`e is somewhat mysterious but ethnobotanist Puanani Anderson-Wong concluded that it was the fern Microsorum spectrum, although that native is found on all islands, not just Kauai.
M. spectrum is now known in Hawaiian as pe`ahi.
There is a fair amount of this sort of lore in Palmer's book, although the bulk of it is technical. Because both amateurs and professionals have been in need of a guide to Hawaii's ferns, Palmer designed his book to be usable by both. A variety of typographical stunts makes it easy for amateurs to find the common or garden variety information.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful advice! Perfect for a busy woman!.......2007-04-06
Short, spicy, and fun to read! Not too long- bullet pointed tips are helpful as they are easy to see, and tips are very concise. Bond inspires me to get on the road, and reminds me to continue to listen to my inner voice! Can't wait for my next traveling experience!
Useful Tips at your Fingertips.......2003-03-16
While this book contains plenty of travel advice that I already know, it is quite handy for acting as a reminder to things I may forget along the way. The bulleted lists are helpful. I don't have to search paragraph after paragraph to find something I want to know. Armed with this book, I shall fearlessly begin my pan-Pacific adventure!
A ValuableTool.......2002-11-08
The author has written a book packed so full of valuable information and wisdom that every woman who travels anywhere should read it over and over again. Many of the tips are just as valid when applied to domestic travel as to travel in foreign lands.
Some of the topics are safety and security (TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS is her mantra), women traveling together, health and hygiene, keeping in touch, bargaining, tipping, packing.
I especially appreciated these tips:when to purchase plane tickets (Wednesdays) and when not to do so (Saturdays); to carry a combination lock -- you never know when it might come in handy; always carry enough money in your shoe to get you out of a tight spot----these are things I probably could have thought of but hadn't.
Bond leads the traveler-to-be through all she should do to adequately prepare: reading guidebooks, making an itinerary (and leaving a copy of it at home with family and friends), getting information from other travelers, doing research, learning a few words in the language of the countries you are visiting, and making checklists.
This book is wonderfully organized and is a MUST for every woman who wants to travel and feel both safe and well-prepared.
Good, but better books exist.......2002-08-19
This book is a nice place for women travelers to start, but the book Travel Tips for the Sophisticated Woman by Lara Vestanen has far more depth and really useful tips.
Thanks for another great book........2001-05-03
Marybeth Bond is one of my favorite travel writers. Whether she is compiling stories about women's travel: "A Woman's Passion for Travel," "A Woman's World" or "A Mother's World" or providing us with sound travel advise through the Gutsy Women's series, Marybeth is a source of sound advice, untempered passion for adventure and an umitigated belief in the strength of women. Read her books and you will be inspired, touched and ready for adventure.

Book Description
Several times in my Enterprise Architecture (EA) practice, people asked me which framework shall I adopt or what are the benefits of the Zachman framework over TOGAF, etc. Others asked me to help them to define their own corporate EA framework. Before answering these types of questions, it is important to know what the differences and commonalities are of these frameworks and standards.
This book explains the role of Enterprise Architecture Frameworks and shows the differences between the most popular Enterprise Architecture Frameworks now a day available in the world.
With the growing importance of Enterprise Architecture [EA]; at the same time, the discussion started how to create or choose the right Enterprise Architecture Framework & Tools for your organisation in the jungle of the existing ones.
Giving an overview of the history of most Enterprise Architecture frameworks as well as their purpose, scope, principles, structure, guidance and compliance, will support you in identifying the usefulness of these Enterprise Architecture frameworks for your own situation. For the in-depth details of the described Enterprise Architecture Frameworks, references to the original sources of information are added in the chapter References & Bibliography.
Separate chapters are addressing the most popular Enterprise Architecture tools on the market and their support of existing frameworks.
Download Description
The first Enterprise Architecture book that compares the 14 most popular Enterprise Architecture Frameworks in the world. A unique book for CIO's, Enterprise Architects and all others interested in EA.
Customer Reviews:
Waste of money and time.......2007-09-14
I bought this book because the title suggested that it would have a good comparison of many enterprise architecture standards available that would guide us to shortlist and then choose one of them. To my surprise I did not find any comparison of such standards. The book lists various standards but there is hardly any specific information highlighting strengths or weaknesses. No doubt that the subject itself is dry but the author does not help to make it any interesting. Neither the book has any flow that will give you structured information nor is a valuable resource even as a reference.
I found better information on the internet than that given in this book. I returned my copy back to Amazon.
Poor Quality Diagrams and Coarse EA Information.......2006-08-29
If you're able to preview a copy of this book (3rd ed), turn to page 15,29,52,102,139, and 241 to see if you could read the characters on one of those diagrams. It seems that lots of them could be just a copy-and-paste from some low-resolution image files, which make these "Enterprise Architectures" unreadable. Then turn to page 116 "Section 15.6.1 What is the Federal Enterprise Architecture (FEA)". It tells you that it's a collection of interrelated reference models, which are defined as: Performance Reference Model (PRM), Business Reference Model (BRM), Service Component Reference Model (SRM), Data and Information Reference Model (DRM), and Technical Reference Model (TRM). Period. No explanation about these models and how they relate to one another. This is far beyond "concise". The sub-title of this book is "Creating" or "Choosing" an enterprise architecture framework but there is no comparison among them through out the entire book. Not to mention creating one with the coarse information given in this book. What else is missing? Index, table of figures, and more for you to find out if you decide to buy one.
starts slow - ends strong.......2005-08-10
At first glance of this book the typos and alternate spellings gets annoying, but after some acclimating the information starts to sink in very easily. Each Framework is explained concisely and doesn't try to get into every detail. There are books for each of the frameworks for that. Overall, I am pleased with it and would suggest it to anyone that is early in their Enterprise Architecture career or anyone that needs to catch up with all the frameworks.
Don't bother.......2004-09-22
If you are already an expert in Enterprise Data Architecture then this book may make some sense to you, but as an introduction the book tries to cover too much material without explaining any topic in sufficient detail. The author's first language is clearly not English, and the book is full of sentences that just don't make sense in English.
Valuable compendium.......2004-07-11
When I received this book I quickly scanned it and dismissed it as a niche book for architects working in the US Government or contractors working in that environment. After reading it, though, I believe that this is an invaluable book for enterprise architects in the commercial sector as well.
For those working in or with the US Government, and especially the Department of Defense, this book's in-depth comparison of enterprise architectures within that domain is an amazing resource. Among the government- and DoD-specific architectures covered are Federal Enterprise Architecture Framework (FEAF) issued by the CIO council, Command, Control, Communications, Computer Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) Architecture (a part of the Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DODAF), and Joint Technical Architecture. This book also covers CCA architecture compliance. This is an interesting part of the book because lessons learned from CCA compliance requirements may possibly translate into an approach for aligning commercial architectures to Sarbanes-Oxley, which is a hot topic in the commercial sector.
Enterprise architectures in the commercial domain that are covered include the Zachman Framework, Enterprise Architecture Planning, The Open Group Architecture Framework, and the Integrated Architecture Framework. More importantly, there are manufacturing-specific frameworks covered, such as the Purdue Enterprise Reference Architecture and the Computer Integrated Manufacturing Open Systems Architecture, which round out this book's comprehensive survey of architectures.
The manner in which the above architectures are covered is what I most like about this book. The author has performed the mind-numbing task of collecting relevant factors of each architecture, then presenting them in a set format: history, purpose, scope, principles, structure, guidance and compliance. This format allows you to use this book as a catalog of architectures, as well as the basis for comparing the strengths and weaknesses of architectures that are suitable for a specific environment.
I also like the first eight chapters, and chapters 11 and 12, which provide general information about enterprise architectures, definitions, and advice on how to select the best architecture based on requirements.
This is an important book for enterprise architects that will serve as an encyclopedia, idea book, and general resource.

Customer Reviews:
Very informative.......2007-02-17
I recently got my first Red Rump parakeet. Ordered this book to get good basic information on care and such. Felt it was a good basis all around book for all Australian parakeets. Went into many types of the Australian keets.
Good book but ordered for someone else.......2006-08-22
The only reason I gave this book 3 stars is because I simply looked through it briefly. I ordered it for a friend of mine who has a Pale-headed Rosella. I assume she finds it helpful. Sorry I couldn't be more specific!
Field guide for broad-tailed parakeets.... .......2005-01-09
THE NEW AUSTRALIAN PARAKEET HANDBOOK by Matthew Vriends, is a relatively technical volume covering "everything about purchase, housing, care, nutrition, behavior, breeding and disease' and a special chapter on `understanding the Australian Parakeet'
Ever wonder where that blue or yellow budgie you own fits into the larger scheme of the Parakeet world? This book won't tell you. NAPH describes the whereabouts of selected parakeets native to Australia, not `Melopsittacus undulatus. You won't find `Budgies' in the index either, and the `Grass Parakeet is not the Budgie according to this book.
Vriends book covers the so-called `broad tailed parakeets' ornamental birds you might encounter on a field trip and want to breed yourself, could you catch a pair. Vriends Includes descriptions of Nymphicus hollandicus known to most of us as the`Cockatiel' and he also writes about lesser known species such as Rosellas, Ring-necks and Red-rumped Parakeets, as well as the Yellow-vented Blue Bonnet parakeet which must be a sight to see in the wild. Vriends book is really a breeding and "birding" book comparable to those published by the Smithsonian on captive breeding programs for `threatened' birds held in captivity and/or finding them in their threatened habitats, and would make a good companion on your next trip through Australia to search the bush and back roads. In fact, one great shot shows an old guy with camper in the background, feeding a wild flock of Australian King Parrots with bright red heads (could this be the author?). The book includes many photos with poor captions and plenty of black and white drawings which I find offputting when trying to determine which species might be lurking on the fence post yonder.
The New Australian Parakeet Handbook.......2002-08-07
This was one of the very few books that covered to any degree the rare species of bird that I recently purchased.
I have also seen this title in a highly respected local bird farm library.
Highly recommended for not extensive information on each breed, but short summaries on about every breed of Australian parakeet you need to know about.
Excellent resource book.......2001-04-30
Dr. Vriends is one of the formost authorities on birds, and this book is an excellent example of his knowledge in unusual species. It covers all Australian parakeets that are usually kept, and is currently the most comprehensive guide to these interesting beauties. Highly recommend this book for all who own or are considering owning Australian broad and long tailed parakeets.

Old, INCORRECT information.......2001-08-04
This book was the the first book that I purchased when I began researching getting my first bird. As my knowledge grew I learned that most, if not all of the information in this "new" book was VERY out of date. When this book was written we were still catching birds in the rainforest, feeding them only seed and water, and not understanding their basic emotional, dietary and medical needs. There are many wonderful books out there that help you choose, and raise the right parrot species for your lifestyle - this is not one of them. Check the copywrite date. Anything written before 1992 (when we stopped importing and started really hand raising and learning what our feathered companions need) is probably out of date and is only good for the pictures.
Please, for the sake of your future companion, get a book written recently, with up to date information, or find a breeder to ask what to read. Do your research first, but make sure that it good research.
Not the best, but still not the worst. Inexpensive........1998-10-01
This book showed a lot of promise when I bought it, but after the first few pages it was appearant that this was a book written for European collectors, not American breeders or pet owners. Diet recommendations are possibly harmful, as are some of the training tips. I was hoping for much more from this nicely presented book, but got one collectors opinion and some poor photos. If nothing else is available, this is a start.

Not a great book, not really a good one. Poor editing and proofing. Ms. Childers should spend some time with Daniela Mascetti -- and a spelling tutor. A hardcover attempt in a softcover product.

best in the serie.......1999-12-06
Still the best watch book edited in the serie of three by this publisher. well documented and spectacular close up of pictures.
Excellent example of incompetence.......1999-08-16
So-called "historic reviews" is awful. For example - on page 156 we can read: "In 1810, King Louis XVII of France appointed Breguet as Watchmaker to the Royal French Navy". Did you hear about Napoleon I? Sophie Ann Terrisse (editor of the book) no. For editor information - Louis XVI were executed much earlier 1810 and next Louis XVIII claimed as King in 1814. Louis XVII never was as King in fact.
A great addition to my book collection.......1999-04-11
This is by far the most attractive book on watches that I have read to date. It is somewhat wider than most books so ensure you have a deep bookshelf. The photographs are of the highest quality and the editorial is well written and researched. This book is not a technical manual, it is a collectors book that portrays the most beautiful examples of the watchmaking tradition.
Excellent introduction to fascinating timepieces.......1999-03-21
One of the best books to start learning about watchmaking. A great introduction, easy-to-read, well-documented and graphically stunning. Perfect as a coffee table book to keep around or as a gift to those who need to be initiated.
I can't recommend this book at all........1999-02-14
Glossy pictures, looks more like a picture book, a little bit of history of some companies, absolutely no in depth information, almost no information about movements. I regret that I wasted my money on this 'book'.

Watches-A Buyer's Guide...? Watch out!.......1998-12-15
"Watches..." was about, well, watches. Time dragged as I read this bland book--the literary equivalent of puffed rice. I actually threw my watch away after reading this.
bad translation of italian editor.......1998-09-28
none only this compilation is constantly outdated (the collection showed are in fact the one showed at the basel fair 2 years before) but the lay out and design is desesperatly poor of creativity and boring article about the companies full of typos. Obviously somebody is trying to make money on the back of the fascinating watch world.
Good but incomplete reference.......1998-08-24
This is a good reference book for anyone starting out collecting or just interested in watches. The pictures are nice and glossy and it also has pictures of the movements. Not a lot of history of the various manufactures although it does list most all the major companies. I would have liked to see more information on recent models; it appears the book has not been updated in the last two or three years. Definitely lacking was any listing of vintage models from the various manufactures. Overall very good but incomplete.
Excellent bible to prestigous watches.......1998-03-29
Great pictures and details of watch movements and materials, usually with prices. A must for any collector or even someone looking for that one of a kind piece that may suit their needs. Only drawbacks - Some of the newer, what I consider high end brands are not included and the extra leaflet that comes with it shows no prices. More or less useless (leaflet only) unless you are rich and don't care about cost. I don't credit any of these problems to the publisher/author. The industry is fast paced and I am impressed they have as much info as they have. I Call it "My bible towatches" (with minor exceptions

Book Description
The Rainbow of Desire is Augusto Boal's bold and brilliant statement about the therapeutic ability of theatre to liberate individuals and change lives. Now translated into English and fully and comprehensively updated from the French, this books sets out the techniques which help us ``see' for the first time the oppressions we have internalized.
Boal, a Brazilian theatre director, writer and politician, has been confronting oppression in various forms for over thirty years. His belief that theatre is a means to create the future rather than passively wait for it has inspired hundreds of groups from all over the world to use his techniques in a multitude of settings. This, his latest work, includes such exercises as:
The cops in the Head and Their Anti-Bodies, The Screen-Image, The Image of the Future we are
Afraid of and
Image and Counter-Image.

Inspiring ideas for a theatre of therapy........1999-04-08
If you enjoy theatre theories, The Rainbow of Desire is a mentally stimulating read. If you believe that theatre has the power to change lives, it is an inspiration. As a young actor/director myself working in educational theatre, Boal's techniques are an exciting departure from standard improv "games," though not having read Boal's previous books made some of the activities described sound a bit confusing. Currently I am in the process of applying these ideas in the creation of an outreach piece, ask me in a few weeks how well it worked.
