Ok, go and buy this book. I am saying this because it is indeed a good read on Mexico and its historic towns and not just because this author devotes 16 pages to my adopted town of Guanajuato!

I think this is an excellent book. I was delighted to find a guidebook that focuses on such an under appreciated topic. It is well researched and well writen. It describes many of the major colonial towns in central and southern Mexico. It provides a brief history for each town, describes the significant buildings, as well as near bye attractions. The maps are accurate and easy to read. It will be one of the few guide books that I bring on my next trip to Mexico.

                    Book Description

One of the most reliable stock market predictors is Dow's Theory, developed by Charles H. Dow, the founder of The Wall Street Journal. That theory, which makes sense of the fluctuations of the Dow-Jones Industrial Average, is clearly and simply explained in The Stock Market Barometer by W.P. Hamilton. As Hamilton wrote, "The Dow-Jones average is still standard, although it has been extensively imitated. There have been various ways of reading it; but nothing has stood the test which has been applied to Dow's theory." Besides providing this valuable explanation for anyone wishing to understand the rise and fall of stocks, Hamilton analyzes the history of the stock market since 1897. WILLIAM PETER HAMILTON was an editor of The Wall Street Journal and also wrote for Barron's. He worked closely with Charles H. Dow, founder of the Journal, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, and the Dow Jones financial news service.

                    Book Description

For two centuries the barometer has been an indispensable laboratory instrument. Yet, despite its revolutionary influence on science, W. E. Knowles Middleton here offers the first complete history of the barometer as a scientific tool.

Middleton relies on research from Western European documents and manuscripts of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. He begins his story with a pre-history of the barometer, the Torricellian experiment, the subsequent experiments and controversies in the 1640s, and the barometric experiments during the remainder of the century.

Later chapters are concerned with the mercury barometer as a scientific instrument, discussing the efforts to expand the scale to render the instrument portable, and to attain greater accuracy. These chapters follow accounts of mercury barographs, the history of the corrections to the barometer, the history of the mercury barometer in North America, and the luminescence that appears when a barometer is moved in the dark. The final chapters discuss barometers other than those using the weight of a column of mercury.

A large number of the more interesting barometers seen by the author in his extensive travels appears in the appendix. Nearly 200 figures and diagrams depict the wide variety of barometers studied by the author over his long career at the Smithsonian Institution.

William Hamilton was the successor (both at the Wall Street Journal and in expounding the Dow Theory) to Charles Dow, and the one who clarified the Dow Theory as most people understand it today. To students of the Dow Theory, and of Wall Street and Investment history in general, this is a must-have volume. Also see works by Robert Rhea.

                        Book Description

Philosophers are often asked for their views on the "meaning of the times." But how should philosophy deal with world events? And what makes a philosopher more qualified than anyone else to editorialize in the daily paper? In this book, Descombes's intention is not to offer his own reading of
the signs of the times, but to interrogate modern philosophers about how they come up with the barometers they use to tell us about modern reason and the spirit of the times. For Descombes, a "philosophical discourse of modernity" should be rejected, for the true subject of modernity belongs not to
philosophers, but to writers, moralists, and sociologists of individualism.

                                    Book Description

The "picturesque" or "natural" garden was the rage in eighteenth-century Europe. Inspired by painting, it also reflected changing attitudes to nature. Largely created and crafted in England, it was exported to other countries, which strove to adapt its forms to local conditions. This is the first book about that famous episode in garden history to look at the larger, European map of landscape design.

The book traces the rise of the picturesque garden in England, exploring intricate dialogues between practical place-making and the theoretical formulations of the picturesque that began with Alexander Pope and Joseph Addison and ended with the writings of William Gilpin, Uvedale Price, and Richard Payne Knight in the 1790s. It surveys a wide range of sites—Rousham, Stourhead, Kew, Hestercombe, The Leasowes, and Hafod, among others—and the contributions to their creation by both amateurs and professionals. Europeans visited and wrote about many of these famous English landscapes. But the impact on European countries of the English example was complicated by the parallel rise of a picturesque garden in France, which had its own cultural direction even while it looked to England and China for inspiration. The French produced a crop of theoretical essays on the new "modern" garden as well as a set of astonishing designs—Méréville, Désert de Retz, Monceau, Moulin-Joli, Ermenonville—that were wholly and distinctly French, despite some superficial similarities with English creations.

Finally, the book surveys the impact of English and French design upon other countries, in particular Sweden, the German-speaking lands, and Russia. The range of effect that could be created on European sites is considerable and belies the notion that the picturesque was simply a process of making 3-D pictures in the landscape. 182 illustrations, 75 in color.

                                          Book Description

Poet, scholar, philosopher, and master of Vajrayana (Tibetan) Buddhism, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche led a life of profound dedication to spiritual enlightenment and teaching. During the final fourteen years of his life his personal assistant was Matthieu Ricard. Together they traveled throughout Tibet, Bhutan, India, and Nepal, returning to the places of Khyentse Rinpoche's youth: his birthplace in Eastern Tibet; the monastery of Shechen which he had entered at the age of eleven; and the retreats where he spent years in meditation and study. At every stop on his journey, Khyentse Rinpoche was welcomed with elaborate ceremonies and outpourings of devotion.

Ricard's deeply personal photographs of this journey are enhance by a biographical narrative that is interspersed with extensive passages from the writings and teachings of Khyentse Rinpoche. Together, these images and texts form an inspiring portrait of one of the great spiritual leaders and teachers of our time. Many masters of Tibetan Buddhism studied with Khyentse Rinpoche, including His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who regarded him as his principal instructor in the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.

Journey to Enlightenment brings us the color and pageantry of the spiritual life and cultures of Tibet, Nepal, India, and Bhutan-- the countries where Khyentse Rinpoche taught and traveled. The story imparts a rare view of a spiritual leader's journey to enlightenment, against a backdrop of a land whose traditions are both ancient and remarkably relevant to our times.

"Khyentse Rinpoche was a model for all other holders of the teachings. We should not only admire his inconceivable knowledge, wisdom, and accomplishment, but, more importantly, we should follow his example and emulate those qualities ourselves. The Buddha's teachings are of enormous value for everyone, not only to dedicated practitioners but to lay people, too, and we must all try our best to practice and implement them, and to emulate the great teachers who have followed him."--His Holiness the Dalai Lama

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional photos, powerful teaching, a special life.......2006-08-28

I admit that much of the time since I've owned this book, when I go thru it, it is just to look at the photographs. Ricard has captured "Shangri-la": I don't know of any more evocative photographic collection. The faces, the costumes, the landscapes: all the mystic of Tibet and its Buddhism. A good reason to want to visit Tibet.

If you can disengage yourself from the photographs (which I find hard to do) then there are many teachings from Khyentse Rinphoche that point to the benefits of naked awareness.

The combination of amazing photos and amazing teaching may be just what we need to begin to eschew distractions and meet reality head-on. It soon overwhelms me each time I try that, but, as I get older, I wonder how often I can put off the challenge that teachers like Khyense Rinpoche present. Is it trickery or the deepest insight?

5 out of 5 stars A Rare and Fantastic Book.......1999-04-09

Whether you are Buddhist or not, this book will be a rare gem. Here are some reasons I would own this book :

                                          1) Rare and beautiful pictures on the most sacred place in the world

                                          2) Learn something about the mysterious Tibetan Buddhism

                                          3) Words of Wisdom (I mean real Wisdom, in condensed form) throughout the pages would awake you and set you contemplating

This is a great memoir on one of the greatest spiritual teacher that takes the reader on the journey of history and geography, culture and tradition, religion and philosophy. With or without realising it, you are learning the most important lesson in life, with enjoyment.

If there was a book that kept you awake till 3.00am in the morning (of course it depends on what time you started reading), this is it!

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring visual portrait of devotion in Tibet.......1998-11-13

An astonishingly beautiful photographic essay of the life of one of Tibet's greatest lamas of this century. Khyentse Rinpoche was a teacher of the present Dalai Lama and of many other high lamas whose sparkling wisdom and warm compassion shine through even in photos. The author Matthieu Ricard is an ordained monk in the Tibetan tradition. He recently accompanied Khyentse Rinpoche on a trip to Tibet. The photographs in this book document the trip in a most vivid portrayal of a living Tibetan culture. It is amazing to see how glorious was the greeting given to this renowned lama upon his return to Tibet. We are treated to a pictorial feast of rites, costumes and throngs of devoted welcomers. The accompanying text tells not only the story of this wonderful trip but also of the life and teachings of Khyentse Rinpoche, the profound influence of which can be felt just by browsing the pages.

                                            Book Description

Taking the form of a diatribe from a grumpy Zen master upset with the slow progress of his pupils, this translation of a seminal Buddhist text examines the misconceptions that surround Buddhism. Humor is used to cut through unexamined beliefs and misplaced faith as the old master Ch'eng scorns his young students' impatience and mistakes. Drawing on Chinese Taoist and Tibetan Buddhist traditions, these teachings profess and entertain by playfully undermining Buddhist clichés and pointing toward a simpler way of life.

Rooting around in a Kyoto antique shop, Stephen Addiss came across a fine example of literati painting by a hand he didn't recognize. Little did he know then that he had discovered an artist he now calls the last of Japan's great literati, Fukuda Kodojin. Kodojin, who styled himself "Old Taoist," should have gone the way of other effete scholars with Japan's radical 19th-century modernization. Instead he wandered in the boundless realms of the three treasures--painting, poetry, and calligraphy--until his death in 1944. Addiss discovered the genuine article, a scholar of cultured sensibility who had mastered the ancient Chinese arts and expressed them with a style all his own. Addiss introduces us to that style through dozens of examples of Kodojin's painting and calligraphy, and over 250 poems. To translate the Chinese poetry, he recruited Jonathan Chaves, who shows the scholar's work to be elegant and wistful, echoing themes of Confucianism and Taoism. Kodojin's work transports us back to a time when art was a way of communicating among friends and not cheapened by exchanges of money. Old Taoist reminds us that even in a modern world, the pursuit of beauty and genuineness are not only possible but necessary. --Brian Bruya

                                            Book Description

In the literary and artistic milieu of early modern Japan the Chinese and Japanese arts flourished side by side. Kodôjin, the "Old Taoist" (1865-1944), was the last of these great poet-painters in Japan. Under the support of various patrons, he composed a number of Taoist-influenced Chinese and Japanese poems and did lively and delightful ink paintings, continuing the tradition of the poet-sage who devotes himself to study of the ancients, lives quietly and modestly, and creates art primarily for himself and his friends.

Portraying this last representative of a tradition of gentle and refined artistry in the midst of a society that valued economic growth and national achievement above all, this beautifully illustrated book brings together 150 of Kodôjin's Chinese poems (introduced and translated by Jonathan Chaves), more than 100 of his haiku and tanka (introduced and translated by Stephen Addiss), and many examples of his calligraphy and ink paintings. Addiss's in-depth introduction details the importance of the poet-painter tradition, outlines the life of Kodôjin, and offers a critical appraisal of his work, while J. Thomas Rimer's essay puts the literary work of the Old Taoist in context.

A good, continually absorbing study of a contemporary though tradtional Japanese poet names Kodojin(d. 1943). The writing style holds one's interest throughout and the story of the poet's life along with his poems, paintings and drawings is always delightful and interesting. If you love Japanese haiku by such masters as Bassho and chinese poetry from the Tang you will find this study worthy of your attention. I have never read a book quite like it.

Translations of and commentary on one author's Taoist poems are presented in a warm blend of spiritual, religious and philosophical inspection which considers the last of the great poet-painters of Japan. Over 150 of his poems are treated to an appraisal which considers both form and content in a fine coverage worthy of inclusion in any strong Asian collection.

Probably the BEST book I have ever read on attaining mental peace and physical health. I consider this the ultimate guide for achieving purity of mind and body. Of all the books I have on health and longevity, I am amazed at how often I refer to this one for guidance. Da Liu can be considered the father of T'ai Chi in this country as he introduced the ancient exercises in the U.S. in the 1950s. The book provides programmed guidance on not only T'ai Chi itself, but also specific breathing and dietary instructions. But probably the most important information in this gem is the advice on achieving internal peace. I most highly recommend this book if your interested at all in improving your health and living a life of internal calm. The book would probably be most useful and appealing to anyone that has been exposed to other eastern or Taoist literature.

From the supplier: 'The Old Man and the Sea' reflects Ernest Hemingway's recognition of a symbiotic relationship between the spiritual and natural worlds. An ecological critical view clarifies Hemingway's intent to reveal the natural world. Hemingway's portrait of a spiritual traveler draws similarities with Taoist concepts of the path of correctness.
