Not up to date.......2005-04-15
I bought the 4th edition of this book, copyright 2003, looking for fun local places to go with our three year old son. I do see many places that I hadn't though of on my own which will be fun to try. But I can also see that we will need to call ahead before going anywhere recommended in this book! The most glaring example of outdated information that I found was the authors' recommnedation, "as New Englanders," to make sure to attend a Hartford Whalers game. Well, that will prove a little difficult as the Whalers played their last game in 1997! It's always a good idea to call ahead when travelling somewhere mentioned in a travel guide. With this book it's essential.
Watch out for outdated information........2001-08-17
I bought this book thinking it would be really great to find some new and different places to take my son. Well we have gone to these new areas but didn't get to do anything because they were out of business. I'm sure that they were all there in 1998 but it is now 2001 and there should have been some updating and checking on these places. I already knew of quite a few places in the book by doing web searches. Save yourself the money and look for places on the web.
great ideas for places to take kids that you wouldn't expect.......1999-10-03
Not just the usual suspects, like the Children's Museum in Boston, but some intriguing possibilities, like a lobsterboat cruise in Maine and polo matches in Massachusetts. It's obvious that the authors searched high and low to come up with some inspired, creative choices. This book is a great gift for expectant parents; everybody we've given it to has raved about its usefulness. This is the kind of book you'll reach for, time and time again. We've discovered nearby places like a butterfly arboretum and a museum with real suits of armor, that we didn't know existed. A good family guide for native New Englanders and vacationers alike.
Too many scattered listings, not enough information.......1998-08-24
A travel book cannot be all things to all people. This book tries, within the parameters set by the authors, to try to find places unique to New England, that are fun for parents and kids. In this, they do succeed.
But because they cover *all* the New England states, each section is necessarily full of capsule information, and no useful maps. (the state map of MA, for example, doesn't even show some of the towns mentioned in the text, or show where sites are located in relation to each other) It's basically a useful list with phone numbers, addresses and hours. The authors assume that the reader will have maps available, since written directions are nonexistent. So, I'm not sure if this a travel guide for native New Englanders, or visitors. Either way, it's damned inconvenient.
It did surprise me with some of the selections - like Harvard's Museum of Culture and Natural History and Myopia Polo; but coming from Boston myself, I noticed there wasn't a heck of a lot "new" in the MA section. In all fairness, it's hard to come up with new kid friendly sites in Boston. Most guidebooks cover that territory exhaustively. Restaurants are featured in each section (excellent idea) but no listing tells you how near the eateries are located to sites. Do you need to make special trips to eat out?
Another quibble I've got is that many of the sites chosen assume that readers are families with older children. However, it is angled for families going on weekends or vacations together, so I can't complain too much about the limited number of listings for those with toddlers in tow.
I sound pretty negative. I bought this book expecting to find lots more listings relevant to my needs (at this time), and am only partially satisfied. However, the authors have done their homework. You can tell that they visited the sites they mention, and that's no small thing. What they do say about the places they visited has a ring of authenticity, and I feel I can trust their word. It's hard work researching (esp with children in tow)...now if only they could fix up the flaws.

Book Description
This book traces the influences that have shaped the secondary school history curriculum during Hong Kong's prolonged political transition between the 1960s and the early 21st century, focusing especially on the relationship between history teaching and identity formation. The author's experience as a local history teacher during the mid-1990s made him conscious of the peculiarities of the history curriculum at the time; in particular, the neglect of Hong Kong's own history in both syllabuses and textbooks, and the unique division between 'History' and the entirely separate subject of 'Chinese History'.

disappointing.......2003-01-02
The information provided in this book is so basic as to be almost useless for anyone except perhaps those with absolutely no knowledge about the whippet or dogs. However, the quality of the writing is so poor that I really can't recommend it even to those looking for the most elementary guide. At times I was so distracted by the grammar, structure etc that I couldn't absorb the little information that was provided. It's certainly not what I would call a 'manual'. Gorgeous cover picture and lovely shiny paper but value for money, no.
Neither Complete Nor Reliable.......2000-01-05
Unfortunately I can only suggest you buy this book if you are seeking to complete your whippet library with all possible titles. There is too much information of a generalized (and somewhat outdated) nature, and not enough breed specific info and much that IS breed specific is misleading or outright wrong. For example, under whippet racing he states that the American Whippet Club sponsors the Award of Racing Merit - a program that was discontinued almost 5 years before this book was published. Another error (in the grooming section) states that "Like the Greyhound, the Whippet's narrow chest cavity can make them vulnerable to illness or even death if the chemicals are too strong" It is true that whippets are chemically sensitive, but it has to do with body fat ratios and metabolism, NOT deepness of chest... The author, Dean Keppler, is an experienced whippet owner and should have done a better job. For an excellent all round whippet book I cannot recommend more highly "Whippets, A Complete Pet Owner's Manual" by Caroline Coile, which is everything the Keppler book should be and is not.

Book Description
From the jungles of Vietnam, where he shot a photo of "the loneliness and desolation of war" that won a Pulitzer Prize, to the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton, David Hume Kennerly witnessed and photographed most of the history-making moments of the last third of the twentieth century. As the millennium turned and he set out to cover his eighth presidential campaign, however, the veteran photojournalist sensed something missing. In his words, "I had the uneasy feeling that I couldn't focus only on the story at hand while bypassing the texture of life that surrounds it.... This time I wouldn't speed across that covered bridge to get to the big event on the other side, but instead I would slow down a bit, maybe even pause to take a picture of the bridge."
Photo du Jour is Kennerly's visual diary of "the texture of life" at the start of the twenty-first century. As he traveled more than a quarter of a million miles across thirty-eight states and seven countries, Kennerly took a picture every single day in the year 2000, using just one camera and one lens. Some offer candid, behind-the-scenes glimpses of the men who would be presidentJohn McCain, Al Gore, and George W. Bush. Most of the photographs, though, seek to capture not the big, historic moments but rather the ordinary, even whimsical moments when the essence of a person or a place reveals itself to the observer who takes the time and has the heart to really see. Travel with him from Beijing to Boston, Moose to Miami, and Whynot to Weimea in
Photo du Jour, and you'll quickly discover that David Kennerly is just such an observer.

Photo edit of the day.......2007-02-17
Maybe my expectations are over the top, maybe I know more than the average joe/jane when it comes to photography, or maybe I just got the whole idea of this book wrong. Whatever the reason, David Hume Kennerly's Photo du Jour is nothing more than a document of his time and access throughout 2000. For some reason, I got the idea in my head that here was a photojournalist going to lug around an extra Leica and only shoot one image a day with it. How would he choose and at 11:59PM would there be regrets over the shot passed up for the possibility of another later in the day that never presented its self? I really wanted this guy to only have ten rolls of 135-36 for the project- I wanted this to be the photo equivalent to Zen in the Art of Archery. I obviously got it wrong. Another thing that gets me about this book is how it is promoted ie. Rosenthal saying "one camera and one lens". Again, all of the conceptual limitations on this project that never materialized! If you are shooting a 21mm on an M body, setting the hyper focal distance around 5ft. and using f8 you are basically good from 2ft to infinity. Fine, understandable and I love wide angles on 35mm format but then you go a crop the image!!!!! This is my biggest jab at the book, if you are going to say one camera, one lens be photographer enough to print the FULL FRAME! I guess if you spend you life getting paid to "get the shot", you learn to shoot it close and wide and then crop what you want later. Some images in this book look like 6x7, some 135-36, and some 6x9 or even a Panavision 16:9 so again, where is the skill/discipline? The fishing equivalent would be using dynamite. The book is what it is and unfortunately is billed as something else. Howard Fineman states in the introduction that this book shows Kennerly in an "uncharacteristic mode" and says this puts him "effortlessly" in league with the likes of Evans, Smith, and Robert Frank...........Please don't insult my intelligence or these photographers. The sophomoric juxtaposition on pages 142-143 is a Photo 1 shark jump that sounded like "badap bumb". Maybe all the text and praise from a Winogrand, Cartier-Bresson, or a Davidson book got mixed up with the images in this one. More hype than hypo. With all that said, the book is beautifully bound a put together. The reproductions are clear, well printed and maintain an elegance and crispness that is not out there in many books today. If you are interested in a slice of time kind of document and are just plain addicted to looking at images, then you should be happy with this book. If you are at all knowledgeable of the work of Winogrand, Cartier-Bresson, Davidson, Friedlander (there is a lame rip off on Like a One-Eyed Cat in du Jour page 156) or even Eggleston in a color version, you may be disappointed in the cost/benefit analysis as I was. I can't remember his exact words but Duane Michals said it best- (paraphrasing)- many photographers shoot hundreds of shots hoping, amidst all of the confusion, to come up with an interesting image...but the difference between the artist and the photographer, is a sense of control. I will keep this book, shelve it with a ton of Magnum issues, and I am sure pull it down once a year or so and flip though it because that's what I do. This could have been brilliant both conceptually and perceptually but end the end, just another guy with a camera and access.
Exquisite.......2002-11-24
This book is a must have. At the Texas Book Festival (2002) this book caught my eye. Never heard of the photographer before but the book was exquisite: filled with stunning black and white pictures. Pictures of everyday things. Of people laughing, of streets and events - capturing the magic moments without a pose. It was a simple concept: One camera. One lens. One year. The results are photos that also capture the routine, sometimes humorous and often extraordinary moments of everyday life.

The Hitler Book: The Secret Dossier Prepared For Stalin From The Interrogations of Hitler's Personal Aides
ASIN: 0755311493 |
Book Description
As a soldier in the first World War, Adolf Hitler never rose above the rank of lance corporal, and before that, he had been an impoverished drifter. Yet within months of the war’s end, he had embarked on a path that was to lead Europe into years of conflict, terror, and the Holocaust. In The Man Who Invented Hitler, David Lewis pinpoints what he believes were the key events in his transformation. He documents the fact that Hitler emerged from the war with hysterical blindness, not blindness from mustard gas poisoning, as commonly believed. Hitler was treated by the controversial psychiatrist Edmund Forster, whose methods included telling patients that only the strength of their will and personality could bring them recovery. Once Hitler found that by sheer will he could cure his own blindness, the next step was obvious to him.

The making of evil.......2004-10-18
What are the causes of evil? Why do some people commit
evil acts? What is evil? Does evil always carry
within itself its own destruction?
These are eternal questions. And questions that we as
a society must be able to answer, if we are ever to see
an improvement of the human condition.
The rise and fall of the Third Reich and Adolf Hitler is
a case story of evil. But all too often the intricacies of WW2 battles and details of Holocaust crimes overshadows the psychology of the people and leaders involved in this the most epic of wars.
With his new book David Lewis tries to correct this by giving
us the psychology of the man who was to be known as the Fuhrer.
Raised in a family with a distant and unloving father,
the young man becomes an orphan after having watched his mother die in agony. Hitler then travelles to Vienna where he soon
joins the ranks of the down and out. Sees his artistic dreams
squashed and eventually welcomes war as a salvation
from the hell he finds himself engulfed in.
All of this we have heard before -
surely the seeds of evil are there, but still there is a mystery:
In ww1 Hitler never rises above the rank of corporal and never
shows any leadership potential. Then after ww1 the former outcast suddenly has a purpose in life and an iron will to make all his dreams come true. Before the war he is without the will
to make anything happen except being down and
out in Vienna on his own. After the war he eventually rises to the position of absolute ruler of Germany.
Surely ww1 did something to Adolf Hitler. But
this books offers more - the tantalizing new theory that the psychopathology of post ww1 Adolf Hitler was also the result of psychiatric treatment for hysterical blindness gone horriblely wrong. That the doctor who was supposed to cure Hitler for his illness after (the supposed) gas attack, actually pushed him further in the direction of megalomania and world conquest.
I suppose the theory is still speculation, and I am not sure
that it actually adds that much to the picture of the causes of evil that we have already.
But the book makes it plausible that evil was not cured by doctor, but made worse by a doctor.
Thats pretty stunning stuff.

Book Description
A uniquely relaxing yet energizing way to achieve balance and healing.
Traditional Thai massage is a dynamic yet comparatively little-known form of bodywork that combines elements of acupressure, stretching, reflexology, the application of herbal compresses, prayer, and meditation. This therapy has benefits for anyone-young or old, active or inactive, healthy or not. Sometimes called "lazy man's yoga," it stretches the muscles, increases the joints' range of motion, and balances the flow of energy throughout the body to promote healing and well-being.
Thai Massage provides fully illustrated, step-by-step instructions that enable the reader to use this integrative and interactive therapy (with a partner) at home. It also explains the history and philosophy behind the techniques and discusses their connections with Buddhist thought and practice, yoga, Ayurveda, the body's energy lines, and acupressure. It is a complete guide to an ancient practice that benefits body, mind, and spirit.

A tremendous contribution to Thai Massage.......2006-10-25
This is a must have for every practitioner of Thai Massage. Ananda is a gifted master of Thai Massage and has done a great service sharing her vast knowledge of this healing art. The photographs showing the wide variety of moves unique to this modality are easy to understand. The accompanying text is well written with precise descriptions of the techniques, the anatomy and how it is affected, and valuable information about the Sen lines I have not found elsewhere. It is meticulous. I love this book and often use it for reference. Along with Asokananda's books, this is the best Thai Massage book available.
learning thai yoga massage.......2005-04-30
Before I began my journey with Thai Yoga massage I looked at a number of books on the market. When I found this book I knew it was the right one for me. The text is easy to read and understand and the illustrations are clear. Miss. Apfelbaum is someone who is able to articulate a bodywork treatment that is complex, beautiful and above all healing. I would advise anyone who wishes to learn Thai Yoga massage to use this book as a tool. She also has a website, a video (that is great for when practicing at home) and does workshops.
The best Thai massage book on the market!.......2005-04-16
With Thai Massage, Ananda Apfelbaum has made an important contribution by capturing this sacred healing art with clarity and precision. It presents a comprehensive overview followed by a clearly illustrated, complete, full-body Thai sequence. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in experiencing
the tremendous benefits and joy of this ancient practice.

Excellent workbook.......2005-04-07
Ananda's description of Sacred Bodywork is beautifully illustrated, explained and documented. She has captured the essence of this art and science.I can attest to this as I was with her in Thailand one of the many years that she studied with Pichest Boonhumme. She gathers in this book her years of studying, practicing and teaching Thai Yoga Massage. She combines her deep spiritual awareness with a detailed knowledge of anatomy and physiology in a way that elucidates the therapeutic value of her craft. Its usefulness is enhanced when used with the video tapes although one could learn without the visual aide. I do use this book in my own teaching and practice and am appreciative of its authentic, detailed methodology.I highly recommend it.
Great Book!!!.......2005-04-07
This book is clear, comprehensive, easy to follow with good photos. A good learning tool.

Good book for your collection.......2007-07-17
I liked the book. It had good recipes and information. But it also has a weakness that most barbecue books have. It doe not guide the user on setting the fire and how to maintain it. I wish it had dedicated a whole chapter to it.
I also noticed that the author doe not have a high opinion of spit roasting which I disagree.
Overall, good use of money.
If you want to learn how to barbecue and grill better buy this........2007-06-13
As the author Smoky Hale points out most barbecue books, bibles and manuals throw a few pages of instruction and a lot of recipes at you. This is the only book I found that actually gives meaningful instruction. If you have a question not covered by the book email the author and he'll answer it. He also has a website with an "Ask Smoky" FAQ page but it's still well worth buying the book.
It covers everything from selecting your meat to selecting your equipment, from preparing your meat to preparing your "fire", and a myriad of rubs, sauces and recipes as well.
Highly reccommended. The Great American Barbecue & Grilling Manual
I predict you will enjoy this book..........2006-03-28
...even if you never follow any of the author's advice.
When was the last time you really enjoyed reading a cookbook? Actually, when was the last time you really read a cookbook? I mean REALLY read the entire book from cover to cover? This is the one.
Smokey Hale is an opinionated cuss with a sense of humor that keeps you reading. His advice is also pretty darn good, too.
Highly recommended.
best bbq book available.......2002-08-20
This book is the bible of BBQ. I read several books and checked the internet sites and this is far and away the best. Mr. Hale not only teaches you proper technique for cooking he teaches you WHY the techniques work. I recently did my very first brisket in a high quality offset style cooker using Mr. Hale's recipes and instructions and it was one of the most tender, juicy and flavorful briskets I've ever had. If you only buy one BBQ book - this is the one to get!
Pretty Darned Good Book.......2001-08-13
Far from being faint praise, saying that this is a "pretty darned good bbq book" is the greatest compliment one bbq'er could make to another. As a life long (ex-Kansas City) proponent of the slow, lazy method of cooking ribs and other treats, this is undoubtedly the most dead-on manual for anybody who wants greater insight into cooking outdoors. For the novice, it is a definitive introduction to serious grilling and bbq. For those of us who have spent as much time trying to figure out WHY we try to coax any goodness out of a nasty cut of meat like the brisket as we do actually doing it, it is a great resource. The book is filled with information that will improve the efforts of bbq'ers of any level. This is the one bbq book every cook should own.

good resource for wire jewelry.......2007-01-19
This book was recommend by the instructor from a chain maille class. It is a good resource. Photos and layouts are good.
beginners book with a small focus.......2006-05-03
I purchased this book at a jewelry crafting shop after leafing thru it, specifically for the chain mail instructions in the second half. for anyone interested in chain mail in a jewelry application this book is a good start, contrary to most of the online sources i found that focused on the armor and period specific applications of the art. as for the wire knitting, i do like some of styles but have also seen other books on wire weaving that were a bit better and had more clear instructions.
Very specific.......2005-12-22
I agree with some of the other reviewers in that this book is not what you'd expect. With that in mind, however, I love the book. It shows a different direction in wire jewelry than I had considered and it is quite an adventure to create these pieces of art. If you want to be a skillful wireworker, then this book is a definite addition to your library. Learning the techniques included here brings a greater dimension of talent/skill to my work and I'm better for it.
Not As Represented.......2005-09-30
Instructions are brief and incomplete. Inadequate photos or not helpful. Extremely disappointed in the entire book
It's Hot!!!.......2005-01-07
Loved the patterns in this book, especially the chain mail Queen's Necklace/Bracelet. I have purchased three copies now, and keep giving them to fellow jewelry makers. The bracelet my nephew made for me, a variation on the Queen's Bracelet, has been a very popular item with people who notice it on my wrist...I have to be careful that people don't rip it off my arm! I have had people just walk up to me and ask to see it, ask me to take it off, and when they learn it's handmade, they just freak! This is a great book for beginner's, as you don't need to know any special techniques, and you can choose, after making a few designs, to take it to a higher level. Great book!
