very good for the price.......2004-09-13
If this were an expensive book, I wouldn't rate it so highly, but it has more information than you'd think for a cheap little paperback. The koi varieties section is mediocre, but you want a big glossy hardcover for that anyway, right? The advice on koi handling and transport is outstanding, with great emphasis on minimizing stress to your fish. There is also information on plants, something most koi keepers disdain to mention. Another reviewer thought the author was against wheat germ sticks for koi--he's not condemning them, just saying there's no proof they make a difference in over-wintering. So much of koi advice is unsupported, it doesn't hurt to mention the fact.
Ok.......2002-06-04
Where's the part about behavior, the part about training your fish to come on over (admittedly this is easy) and how about a more comprehensive types and markings - it was also sad they really skipped over butterfly koi. Otherwise nice pictures and a good disease section.
Oh well. Nice book to have, but it is not by any means complete.
Good, but could be better.......2002-05-16
This book includes everything you need to take care of koi, but sometimes in too much detail. Many of the items in this book are exactly the opposite of what I have read elsewhere (e.g wheatgerm sticks are bad for koi??)
While too much detail is usually the problem, there are also many parts when there are not enough facts to actually understand what thi book is trying to say.
It's an OK beginners guide, but some parts can be tedious and confusiong.
One of the two books you need........2002-02-07
This book has all the information you need on keeping Koi. Don't let its small size fool you. I have browse through all available Koi books, this book is the only one you need. You will not get more information from other books, except for more pictures. Buy this book and another book titled "The ponder's Bible" for excellent information on pond building and maintenance. These two books will be more than enough for keeping Koi sucessfully.
Excellent.......2000-07-18
If you're a beginner at having a pond and keeping koi, this is a great book. It has everything from digging the pond, filters and pumps...to everything you need to know to keep the pond clean for your fish. The book identifys the various breeds of koi, with a complete section on diseases.

Book Description
Though Norman C. Fassett’s classic, Manual of Aquatic Plants has been superseded by a comprehensive new edition from Garrett Crow and Barre Hellquist (see below), it still has an affectionate following, much like old editions of classic cookbooks and dictionaries. Fassett prepared the data to make the identification of aquatic plants as simple as possible, not only when they are flowering or fruiting, but also in sterile condition.
The Manual covers a region from Minnesota to Missouri and eastward to the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Virginia. Originally published in 1940, the Manual was reissued in 1957 with revised nomenclature and other updates by Eugene C. Ogden. A Manual of Aquatic Plants includes 219 elegant line drawings and seven photographs of aquatic plants, a glossary, an appendix of nomenclature revisions, an appendix on the use of aquatic plants by various fauna, and an index

Book Description
In 1938 James Speyer departed Harvard's School of Design in order to become Mies van der Rohe's first American graduate student at the Armour Institute of Technology in Chicago. During the 40s and 50s he taught architecture under Mies while at the same time, as an architect in his own right, he completed houses in Chicago and Pittsburgh that represented the cutting edge of new glass-and-steel design. In 1957 Speyer traveled to Greece on a Fulbright fellowship, where he taught at the Polytechneon in Athens; upon returning to America, he became Curator of Twentieth Century Painting and Sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago. He held this position for the next twenty-five years, and his tenure witnessed over 125 exhibitions and a remarkable expansion to the Institute's permanent collection.
This volume includes a biographical essay by Franz Schulze and six accounts from Speyer's friends and colleagues who remember different aspects of his life and work. Floor plans and photographs direct special attention to Speyer's extraordinary, ultra-modernist designs--not only for houses but also for innovative exhibitions at the Art Institute during the 60s and 70s.

Book Description
The first comprehensive survey of the important corpus of Indic literature on Sanskrit grammar, extant in Tibetan translation in the Buddhist canon. Core of the study is the description of the forty-seven Sanskrit grammatical treatises covering some two thousand folios in the canon. The contents of these texts and the historical information regarding their Tibetan translators are examined in detail. Further chapters are devoted to the grammatical analysis in an eighth-century Tibetan handbook for translators, and to data from Tibetan historiography. The book offers the first systematic study of the extent and the historical development of the Tibetan expertise in Sanskrit grammar, a central scholastic discipline in Buddhism. It opens up a section of Tibetan literature essential to the understanding of the Indo-Tibetan indigenous grammatical traditions.
Book Description
These beautiful instruments have long been a favorite with musicians. This book is a history, source book and owner's manual for players and fans which covers the facts and figures necessary for serious collectors. In addition to many black and white historical photos, there is also a 32-page color section highlighting models. The book covers the company's full history, specific styles and models of all instruments, Hawaiian, blues, and jazz artists who have used Nationals, a history of their advertising, set-up and maintenance, and much more. Appendixes include serial numbers for all instruments, a company chronology and a Hawaiian Artist Discography.

History And Artistry of National Resonator Guitars by Bob Brozman.......2007-03-11
This book is the standard by which all or any others will be judged. Every aspect of the National resonator guitar world is comprehensively covered in detail. The book starts with the history of the Dopyera family emigrating from Hungary and setting up a musical instrument repair business in L.A.
There follows a very detailed family history covering what each of the family members of the next two generations did, including family feuds.
The history concludes with a chapter on the current owners.
After the formation of the National Guitar Co. we get a comprehensive discussion of its history including detailed early drawings of prototypes of guitars etc. and copies of the patent plans submitted. Every model of instrument made by the company is discussed in detail with reference to the different materials used and the various levels of decoration etc.
A qite sizeable section of the book deals with a number of National and Dobro players including Sol Hoopi,Tampa Red,Son House,Blind Boy Fuller et.al.. The book finishes off with a chapter of prints of early catalogues and advertisements which are fascinating for their historical content. There is also a discussion in the book of setting up the guitars and maintenance etc.
The book is a must for anyone interested in the behind the scenes development of National Guitars. My only criticism is of the section of colour plates contained in the book. While the photographs of the instruments cover a very large range and show the exquisite detail of the decoration on some very rare models, the photos mostly have a dark background that makes them feel oppressive and slightly indistinct. Having said that, the collection of instruments photographed is outstanding;very early tricones, mandolins, tenor guitars, ukes etc.
For anyone interested in the history of or looking at National Guitars
and other instruments this book is indispensible.
Must read for Resonator buffs.......2007-01-10
This book presents a fascinating history of the development and production of National Resonators and a comprehensive catalogue of vintage instruments. Brozman, in addition to being a spectacular player, is a fine writer. That this is a labor of love is readily apparent in his writing and the obvious effort he has expended in researching the subject. The prose is supported amply by numerous black and white photographs and the color plates of vintage Nationals are spectacular.
The only complaint I can offer is that it barely touches on the rebirth of the National company, a significant development especially in light of the high quality instruments they are currently producing. Hopefully this will be addressed in a subsequent edition.
A great book!.......2006-12-05
Bob Brozman is a great player, a great expert and collector of vintage National resophonic instruments, and overall a great man. This book spreads light on the history of National guitars, with a very detailed story of the Dopyera Brothers (founders of the National company). The numerous photos are beautiful and make you wish you own those splendid instruments - actually pieces of true art.
Also the wide section on blues and hawaiian National players is absolutely interesting.
A MUST for every lover of acoustic music and of guitars.
History of National Resonator Instruments.......2006-03-15
Bob's book gives a great insight into who actually researched, tested, and invented the instruments, where and how they were manufactured and sold, and who played them (blues, jazz, and Hawaiian musicians) the sound and music is terrific. What is really amazing is the craftsmanship of the old world engravers, I would love to own an original Tricone IV or Single Cone IV. This book introduced me to a new side of acoustic music I was not aware of, the readers of this book would do well to purchase Tone Poems III, Vintage Slide and Resonator Instruments played by three gifted musicians, David Grisman, Mike Auldridge, the Bob Brozman, the author of this book.
Excellent, Interesting, Worth the read, well worth the $.......1999-01-23
!! Bob Brozman put in a huge effort into this book. Very little Fluff, tons of detail, lots of vintage photos (where does he get this stuff?), and lots of new beautifully shot pictures. It's obvious that this was a true labor of love for him, as the end product (the book) is also a work of art. Great read, also a great coffee table book.

Biography of an exemplary Buddhist.......2005-06-06
In the course of a long-life, spanning almost 120 years, Xu-yun (1840-1959)had become something of a living legend. By the time of his passing in 1959, Xu-yun was the most renowned Zen Buddhist in China. Hence this biography makes fascinating reading. It details the struggles - as well as the rewards, of a life dedicated to the Dharma. Philip Kapleau Roshi used to read portions of this book to his students to inspire them and provide spurs for practice.
Born around the time of the Opium Wars - Xu-yun's life spanned some of the most violent upheavals China had ever witnessed -what with being occupied by several foreign powers, the formation of the Republic, then civil war, leaving China under Communist rule. Few of China's modernisers - communist or otherwise, were sympathetic to Buddhism, leaving the fate of the Sangha uncertain. Unlike the days of yore, when official patronage and funding could be counted on, these were hard times. Hence, Xu-yun's endeavours to restore Chinese Buddhism or bring about a revival seem all that more remarkable. Similar challenges had been encountered by the eminent Ming master Han-shan, so Xu-yun came to be known as "Han-shan come-again."
This book also documents Xu-yun's pilgrimages and travels - for the most part on foot, to neighbouring Buddhist lands - India, Tibet, Burma, Thailand etc. While in Thailand, the King was so impressed by Xu-yun, he became a personal disciple of the master. On a practical note, supplementary material has been added, detailing Xu-yun's instructions on Ch'an/Zen practice, at the Jade Buddha temple, Shanghai. These were highly practical and can be put to use anywhere. Master Xu-yun's inspiring story deserves a place in every Buddhist library.
