          Book Description

From the Northwest Territories of Canada as far southeast as Virginia in the United States, tree bark became indispensable to the everyday life of Native peoples. Simple to cut, light to carry, easy to work with, it was used for food, containers, clothing, and canoes. But nothing showed their skill, ingenuity, and inventiveness as the way bark was used to make shelters.

            Book Description

Before the white men came to America, woodlands stretched from the Atlantic to the Mississippi, from Canada south to what is now Virginia. In the clearings of this deep forest, and on the shores of lakes and rivers, the native people built their villages. The forest provided them with food and supplied the materials from which they constructed their houses. In this generously illustrated book, Charlotte and David Yue chronicle the daily lives of the woodland people.

                Release Date: 2001-10-23

                Book Description

                Am I pig
                Enough for you yet?
                The more I gorge,
                The more gorgeous I'll get.

We have all gazed at sheep and cows in fields by the side of the road. And we have seen them gazing back. What are they thinking? And what about those funny looks we get from horses, pigs, geese, ducks, llamas, and, yes, chickens? This book opens up the inner lives of livestock, revealing their concerns about relationships, food-chain issues, and why people see cows and want to go "Mooo."

Valerie Shaff and Roy Blount Jr. have created another classic -- combining incomparable photographs with Blount's brilliant verse to give readers rare insight into the weird world of the denizens of the barnyard.

                In Texas, Ohio, Massachusetts,
                Here's what is for certain.
If you cross paths with an angry goose, it's
                Your butt will be hurtin'.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not for young children.......2006-12-21

We bought this book for our 8 and 10 year old, who LOVE the "I'm a Puppy, Hear Me Yap." However, we quickly learned that this book has some content that is not for children. My 10 year old was confused by all the "bad" words. She wondered why it used the word "jackass" and why it talked about animals having sex.

A great book, but beware of the content for younger kids.

                4 out of 5 stars THE BEST TITLE---AND MORE.......2001-12-29

Not only does this slender volume have the best title of the year, it also can boast wonderful photographs by Valerie Shaff and charming verses to match the photos by Roy Blount, jr.

Here are dozens of farmyard animals: chickens, cows, horses, mice, etc. and to complement these first class black and white photographs, short, smart quotes from the animals, themselves. In other words, we are let into the animals' thoughts via Blount.

One of my favorites is a calf with markings very much like a calico cat telling us, "My politics are simple: I feel/Strongly about one issue: veal..." The lamb, on the other hand, looking exactly as if he just escaped from F.A.O. Schwartz lets us know, "You will never know fully,/What it means to be woolly."

Both children and adults will find enjoyment in this lovely book.

4 out of 5 stars First In Fishing Lure Collecting Information.......2004-12-01

The "Bible" was the first book that I knew of, that gave collector's information on fishing Lure collecting. Originally the bible came in a three ring binder. This book, while not in the same format of the current books, carries forth the original ideas and information of the author and gives the readers some idea of how much work went into being the first book on collecting. This book is still valid today with information on obscure manufacture's that are not listed in some of the other reference's. Always a good read, but not to be confused with the coffee table reference books that are also available.

                  2 out of 5 stars The Fishing Lure Collector's Bible - R. L. Streater.......2000-02-17

I was disappointed. To begin, this book is a very difficult read. The 'Color Gallery' is beautiful but the picture captions give little or no information and refer the reader to the 'Value Guide'. Here is the problem. The 'Guide' appears to be nothing more than a collection of 400+ pages of poor b&w photocopies of old magazine ads! The copy consists of small, hard to read newsprint; tiny, type-written 'values'; hand-lettered, cartoonish descriptions and comments and some 'hand-drawn' depictions of various lures. The rest of the lure pictures range from coarse 'line-drawings', to 'blotchy', to totally black silhouettes. All told, it is difficult to judge the content due to the lack of detail, which should be the priority here. Perhaps I have been spoiled. My first book on this subject was Carl F. Luckey's "Old Fishing Lures & Tackle", a totally classy and professionally done work. It is everything the 'Collector's Bible' is not. Mr. Luckey's publication is done, and done well. Mr. Streater's publication looks like a second or third draft, not yet ready to go to the printer.

                            Book Description

A lavishly illustrated introduction to the unique qualities of Japanese gardens and what they express, as well as a practical guide to their design, creation, and care.

For the Japanese, the garden is a microcosm of the world, rich in symbols; it is also the perfect expression of their affinity with nature. Designing and Creating Japanese Gardens explains the spiritual and philosophical symbolism of the Japanese garden and how the Western gardener can recreate its beauty and serenity. Among the topics are: history, philosophy, and spirituality; changing styles, designs, and fusui—from pavements and stepping stones to gateways and lanterns; plants, and planting—the importance of the cultivation, choice, positioning, and care of plants; water and structural features; and the gardens of Japan, with advice on gardening in the West. Inspiring as well as practical, Designing and Creating Japanese Gardens features more than 300 color photos and drawings.

                              Book Description

This study is an attempt to identify and describe the distinctive features of the poetic style of the acclaimed medieval Andalusian poet Ibn Khafaajah, who has been credited with starting a new school of poetry, in Andalus and elsewhere. It offers a close reading of his poetry, concentrating on the three basic elements of style -- imagery, rhetorical devices, and structural patterns. It shows how Ibn Khafajah creatively uses the poetic tradition available to him to form new images and scenes, create multi-layered poems, and bestow different levels of unity and coherence on his poems. The study demonstrates some of the ways by which the various elements of style are combined and interrelated, to produce original, meaningful, and highly moving poems in the Khafajian style.

5 out of 5 stars Important overview of the 2002/03 New York Theatre season.......2005-04-18

The BEST PLAYS series dates back to 1920. Each year the editors selected the season's 10 Best plays (or musicals) and provided a detailed synopsis including lengthy excerpts from the scripts.

The rest of the volume chronicles every play/musical/solo show to open in New York that season with full opening night credits, and tallies of the number of performances, awards, and other important theatrical data.

The format changed in 1996/97 to present only the prize winning plays of each season. Because most scripts are published now, it is no longer as important for the series to offer their condensed versions of each script. Hence the new format providing essays on each major new play. The New York theatre scene has changed a lot since 1920 and THE BEST PLAYS series has always changed along with it.

As always, for any theatre fan, it is a valuable reference book. I am the proud owner of the entire series and look forward to each new edition.
