Well Written. .......2006-09-12
"Sky", by Hanneke Ippisch. Subtitled: "A True Story Of Resistance During World War II." Simon & Schuster Books For Young Readers, New York, 1996.
The number of works on the Resistance in Belgium, Denmark and The Netherlands are few and far between; so, I was happy to see this personal memoir by Hanneke Ippisch about the Dutch Resistance. It is a concise and sweet autobiography of one woman inside the Dutch Resistance.
Time wise, the author's resistance story actually begins with May 10 1940: the "Sitzkrieg" turned again into the "Blitzkrieg" and Belgium and The Netherlands had soon capitulated. Hanneke Ippisch records how she and her family were awakened by the drone of heavy bombers and then everything changed. From page 17 to page 138, she tells the story of her involvement with the Dutch Resistance, support for the Jews, her own arrest, her interrogation and finally, her release just before the end of the war in Europe.
I found her writing to be direct and informative as she describes events that occurred. Contemporary black & white photos illustrate the book throughout. As the author said in her preamble, she was now seventy and ..." I cannot find the excuses to postpone this any longer." Nicely done.

This book was a very interesting story, although it was short and not very in-depth. The photos were a good addition, and it was different from the Jews' perspectives. Instead of being sent to concentration camps during the war, she secretly fought for the Jews, leading them to the countryside to escape Nazi persecution. This different angle (coming from a resistance worker) made this story a good change from other WWII books.

All preteens and teenagers should read this story of heroism during a time far before their birth - not just for the story itself, but for the true lesson of tolerance and understanding of those who are different than ourselves.
Everyone who takes the opportunity to read this book should also attempt to invite the author, a marvelous woman now resident in Montana, to visit their community for one of her outstanding presentations to the local youngsters. They'll be touched by a most-humbly recounted true story of a young girl's heroism in an environment which most of us can only imagine in our worst nightmares. But they'll also be engaged in dialogue which will open their eyes and broaden their horizons to the way that people view and treat each other.
It's an extraordinary experience.

The book Sky is a true story about a wonan's experiences during WWII. It takes place in Holland and told about the author being caught and put in prison. It also told about her younger days in Girl Scouts and working underground with the resistance. The photos added to the story.

Sky is about a girl in World War II. When she was in eighth grade, the war began. Holland was taken over by the Nazis. When she finished high school, she went to the Academy of Physical Education. Her father was planning a resistance. Hanneke wanted to join. When she joined the resistance, her first mission was to bring food and I.D. papers to the Jewish people. She also helped families travel to different parts of the country to escape the Germans.
Sky is easy to read, but has great detail. Some true stories aren't fun to read, but when you read this book you feel like you're there. The people in the resistance had a hard job to do, and they risked their lives to save others.

Very comprehensive and thorough look at the Norwegian Elkhound breed. Gives the history of the breed as well as an excellent discription of the breed and their temporament, both positive and negative points. Great book to have if you are considering an Elkhound, or, already have one.

I have a 12 year old Norwegian Elkhound and always have difficulty finding things for this dog breed, especially calendars. This calendar has great pics of adults and puppies. We will enjoy it throughout the year. It was a great price and was delivered promptly. I would definitely order from this company again. Thanks so much to the photographer!

This is a great calendar and the pictures are all different. There are puppy pics and adult pics. Any norwegian elkhound lover will love this calendar. I got if for my husband and he loves it and so does our little norwegian elkhound.

Great for beginner dog owners.......2003-03-26
This book is well indexed, as it may be easily read from cover to cover, or it may also be used strictly by section, allowing for quick and easy reference.
While the beginning portion gives great detailed physical description as well as AKA standards, I have found the vast majority of the book to provide very general information that can apply to just about any dog. While I have adopted an adult, most of the book talks to the prospective puppy owner/trainer. Thererfore, I do not feel that it addresses breed-specific problems that may exist in adult dogs adopted from unknown previous owners.

This is a must-have for Elkhound owners........2007-03-12
I read several other books on the breed in an effort to understand my dog, but nothing came close to explaining to me her weird personality quirks and why she has them. Then I read THIS book and I swear the light was shining and the angels were singing. Nina Ross and Pat Craige Trotter, from whom I actually got my dog, explain the elkhound in clear, exact detail. No other book can explain this wonderful, ancient breed like this one does. Now that I can "speak" Elkhound, I couldn't imagine ever having another breed!

It seems that most authors on the finer spirits tend to take an antiseptic view of their work. They may simply chronicle the historical background of some of the largest distilleries and review the high-end labels. But Mr. Murray writes with a distinctive passion about his favorite of all spirits (his admission on a radio talk show in Scotland). If you enjoy bourbon but have been afraid to plunk down the cash for a high-priced bottle, check out this book and then go for it! You won't be disappointed.

I am a fan of architectural photography and when I came across this book at the Hirshhorn, I couldn't leave without it. As other reviewers have stated, these are not your typical "tourist" shots of DC. This book features unique perspectives of architectural details you might normally miss. It has certainly become an inspiration for me to make more trips to the city with my camera!

Anyone who has grown weary of the typical DC monument pictures will love this book, with its gorgeous black-and-white photos of less commonly photographed buildings and places in DC. It's a sophisticated photo book of DC, one that you can give friends who actually live in DC and are tired of all the same old same old, or it makes a great gift for people visiting DC for the first time as well, or who have never been to DC. It's a DC photo book with a flair, the best one I've seen.

Gottlieb, a Washington lawyer turned full-time photographer, shares his love of our nation's capital with stirring photographs of the city. There are the classic pictures of the Mall and the famous monuments, along with less-photographed areas in surrounding parks and neighborhoods. By shooting at sunrise and after dark, from all angles and during all seasons, he successfully highlights many special features about his subjects. It's a worthy addition to any coffee table and may compel a trip to D.C. to see for yourself.

This book is a book with pictures only. There is a short introductory essay by D.P. Moynihan about the history but the rest is pictures with no captions, these can be found in the back. The photo's are all black and white, which is fitting for a city in which nearly all the important buildings and monuments are white greek columns. Get it when you have been to DC, it looks good next to your own pictures.
