Book Description

The Plains Indians found medicinal value in more than two hundred species of native prairie plants. Unfortunately, modern American culture has not paid much attention.

White settlers did learn a few plant-based remedies from the Indians, and a few prairie plants were prescribed by frontier doctors. A couple dozen prairie species were listed as drugs in the U.S. Pharmacopeia at one time or another, and one or two, like the Purple Coneflower, found their way into the bottles of patent medicine.

But in both the number of species used and the varieties of treatments administered, Indians were far more proficient than white settlers. Their familiarity with the plants of the prairie was comprehensive--there probably were Indian names for all prairie plants, and they recognized more varieties of some species than scientists do today. Their knowledge was refined and exact enough that they could successfully administer medicinal doses of plants that are poisonous. All of the species used by frontier doctors were used first by Indians.

In Medicinal Plants of the Prairie, ethnobotanist Kelly Kindscher documents the medicinal use of 203 native prairie plants by the Plains Indians. Using information gleaned from archival materials, interviews, and fieldwork, Kindscher describes plant-based treatments for ailments ranging from hyperactivity to syphilis, from arthritis to worms. He also explains the use of internal and external medications, smoke treatments, moxa (the burning of a medicinal substance on the skin), and the doctrine of signatures (the belief that the form or characteristics of a plant are signatures or signs that reveal its medicinal uses). He adds information on recent pharmacological findings to further illuminate the medicinal nature of these plants.

Not since 1919 has the ethnobotany of native Great Plains plants been examined so thoroughly. Kindscher's study is the first to encompass the entire Prairie Bioregion, a one-million-square-mile area bounded by Texas on the south, Canada on the north, the Rocky Mountains on the west, and the deciduous forests of Missouri, Indiana, and Wisconsin in the east. Along with information on the medicinal uses of prairie plants by the Indians, Kindscher also lists Indian, common, and scientific names and describes Anglo folk uses, medical uses, scientific research, and cultivation. Descriptions of the plants are supplemented by 44 exquisite line drawings and over 100 range maps.

This book will help increase appreciation for prairie plants at a time when prairies and their biodiversity urgently need protection throughout the region.

5 out of 5 stars Ethnobotany in Schools.......2001-05-26

As a high school science teacher on the Omaha Indian Reservation, both my students and myself found this book to be an invaluable resource this past fall. As my students did their ethnobotanical survey of the reservation, I often found them waiting to use my one copy of the book. (I will be getting additional copies for the upcoming school year.) We found the information to be both accurate and thorough. The students especially enjoyed the well drawn pictures and easy to follow format. I would suggest this book to anyone interested in plains ethnobotany.

Medicinal Wild Plants contains information on nomenclature, habitat, Indian use, Anglo folk use, use in medical history, some entries for recent scientific research, and cultivation. Kindscher frequently cites Eclectic medical use for the plants. These books are authoritative. Kindscher has thoroughly studied the ethnobotany of each and presented the most useful information. What is most striking to me about these books are Kindscher's frequent comments revealing that he has personally seen and tasted these plants, and sometimes tested the methods he writes about, something rare in the ethnobotanical literatue of North America.

On several of the maps in this book the numbers do not match their descriptions. For example, on the map on page 18, item 95 is identified as the Hotel Hermitage. It is not. This hotel is several blocks away--it may be item 108, but the numbers of the descriptions end with 97.

Sadly, I have to agree with the previous three reviewers...

I have just emailed HarperCollins in Australia to see whether they have correct maps (the text looks ok) and will post the gist of their reply if it seems useful.

I HOPE the problem is only with Florence... I am going to Venice as well as Florence and the text looks useful.

It looks to me as though the text is correct and the maps are wrong - but I stand to be corrected :) by more knowledgeable readers.

UPDATE: The maps are indeed wrong, but HC Australia supplied correct ones. I suggest if you bought this flawed edition you contact HC and see how they can help.

HC's service in helping to find a reasonable solution (I go to Italy shortly) was excellent!

In general I've had good experience with the Access guides - Access Rome is my favorite guide for that city. This one, though, is disgracefully sloppy and full of errors. The Access books are organized around maps of neighbohoods of the cities they cover, with the location of each notable landmark, hotel, restaurant, etc. indicated by a number on the map; each map is followed by a text section with the descriptions keyed to the numbers on the map. The problem with this guide is that the numbers on the maps don't match the numbered descriptions in the text. A few examples: the map of the Centro Storico section of Florence (p. 18) has the number 8 where the Duomo is and 7 where the Baptistry is; but in the text the corresponding descriptions have numbers 9 and 18. In the section on the Oltrarno district of Florence, the Hotel Lungarno on the Borgo San Jacopo has number 22 in the text, but on the map (p. 116) number 22 is on a completely different street a few blocks away. In the section on the Castello sestiere of Venice, the text lists the Hotel Metropole on the Riva degli Schiavoni as number 40; but the map shows number 40 on San Pietro, about a kilometer from where the hotel actually is (it's where number 35 is on the map). Number 39 on the same map is right on the Ponte San Pietro; but in the text the Ponte San Pietro is listed as number 31. And there are lots more - at least half of the map numbers I checked are incorrect. Didn't Harper Collins proofread this book? They should recall it and give everyone who bought it their money back.

1 out of 5 stars DON'T rely on the map numbers!.......2006-01-09

I agree totally with the reviewer who complains about the lack of relationship between map numbers and street addresses. This edition is completely messed up, and unaware tourists are going to be standing in Florence, book in hand, wondering where the #$@&! the museum/gelateria/hotel is that was on the map for that location. What a shame - Access guides are usually just the best street-by-street guides around. And this isn't a matter of just being one number off, consistently, or of the location being just around the corner. Numbers on the map send you all the way across town sometimes, compared to where the location really is. Extremely weird and unexplainable. Why isn't HarperCollins pulling this off the shelves and/or offering buyers a corrected edition? Someone really dropped the ball here.

1 out of 5 stars Riddled with errors.......2005-07-03

We have used Access guides for almost twenty years for many locations. They have always provided a strong alternative to the traditional guides, with a particular emphasis on architecture and design. We have returned our copy of this book. The maps for Florence are completely inaccurate with no co-relation between text and map numbers. Essentially the guide is of little use without a separate map. .

          Book Description

Arts organizations across the country are actively expanding their efforts to increase public participation in their programs. This report presents the findings of a RAND study sponsored by the Wallace-Reader's Digest Funds that looks at the process by which individuals become involved in the arts and attempts to identify ways in which arts institutions can most effectively influence this process. The report presents a behavioral model that identifies the main factors influencing individual decisions about the arts, based on site visits to institutions that have been particularly successful in attracting participants to their programs and in-depth interviews with the directors of more than 100 institutions that have received grants from the Wallace-Reader's Digest Funds and the Knight Foundation to encourage greater involvement in the arts. The model and a set of guidelines to help institutions approach the task of participation building constitute a framework that can assist in devising participation-building approaches that fit with an institution's overall purpose and mission, its available resources, and the community environment in which it operates--in other words, a framework that will enable arts institutions to take an integrative approach to building participation in the arts.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous book for a gorgeous breed.......2006-03-20

If you are a totally smitten Bichon Frise owner, as I am, you will have to add this book to your collection. I own many many volumes but this portrays the breed in all its glory. The cover is your first clue to the beauty of the publication. I particularly like the personal short tales that are set in pastel color insets. And I find the photo section on grooming exceptionally helpful--you will definitely need these close-ups if you dare to try your hand at this art. Chapter 2 reminds you that this loving breed in NOT FOR EVERYONE; they should not be left alone for long periods of time.

Eight chapters and 128 pages of great information, super binding, heavy shiny paper, with sharp color photos; this book succinctly covers all you need to know.

Supplements to the Index Kewensis (1893-5) have so far been issued for five-yearly periods. This is the first of a new series of annual supplements to the Index that will meet the need for more up-to-date information. It includes, as for the five-yearly supplements, information on new and changed names of seed-bearing plants at the level of family and below. Entries are also given in an appendix for ferns and fern allies that have not previously been included in the Index Kewensis. The information in this volume is complete to the end of December 1986.

Here is the third in a series of annual supplements to the Index Kewensis. The latest Index includes information on new and changed names of seedbearing plants at the level of family and below, and serves as a reliable update of this comprehensive botanical reference which was first published
in 1895. Readers will find an informative and useful section that lists new and overlooked generic names, while valuable appendix material provides entries for fern and fern allies that were not presented in the original text.

Since its debut in 1964, the Pirelli calendar has featured the finest photography of the world's most beautiful women and has served as a fascinating mirror of the times in which we live. Looking through its pages year after year is like traveling through time, through varied representations of femininity, through changing fashions and concepts of beauty.

Big time waste of money. Pix are bland, boring, old, and most of them are small. Don't waste your hard earned cash on this log to add to the fire! Good for....propping up your loose table leg.

Calendar art supported by a company has to draw attention or the money is wasted. Although the Pirelli calendar is no exploitive garage display, it is certainly not art book quality until the last few years. Since 1994, the work has been solid. The 2000 calendar by Annie Leibovitz is well worth your time. The book's essays are a brief overview of cultural events since 1964 when the calendar was begun. I found the essays added very little. Much of the "best" art in this book will have only historical value for evoking past culture for you, as its aesthetic appeal is limited.

Before reading further, please realize that this book contains much female nudity of a sort that would earn it an "R" rating if it were a motion picture.

The images are supposed to respond to a charter to capture "the beauty of the world." As portrayed here, this beauty is of gorgeous women, generally displaying more skin than clothing.

A different artist is chosen for the commission each year. Since 1994, these photographers have been Herb Ritts (1994 and 1999), Richard Avedon (1995 and 1997), Peter Lindbergh (1996), Bruce Weber (1998), and Annie Leibovitz (2000). As you can see, this is about as good a group as you could draw upon for a calendar. Not surprisingly, most of the best images come from this period. I graded the book down for mostly having ordinary images before 1986.

Here are my favorites from the book:

Peter Knapp, January 1966; Harri Peccinotti, 1968 (page 51); Francis Giacobetti, 1971 (page 70); Sarah Moss, 1972 (pp. 71 and 75); Bert Stern, May 1986; Terence Donovan, March and September, 1987; Arthur Elgort, February and July, 1990; Clive Arrowsmith, September 1991; Herb Ritts, Cover and December 1994; Richard Avedon, April and August, 1995; and all twelve of Annie Leibovitz's images from 2000.

Ms. Leibovitz's work focuses on portions of torsos for the most part, done in subtle lighting. It evokes a display of partially broken antique statuary from Greek and Roman times.

I found some of the images in the book to be troubling. Perhaps the most unfortunate were a few that figuratively tied the women to the concept of a tire. Relizing that these images had a commercial purpose, it still seems wrong to turn people into products.

Perhaps the best lesson from this book is to be sure that you get the Pirelli calendar sent to you each year in the future. If the company is going to continue sponsor such fine photographic art, this calendar will be well worth having.

After you finish this book, think about ways that beauty should and should not be portrayed. How could Pirelli have presented this work in other formats to create more benefit for its viewers?

Seek beauty in all of its forms, and use it to elevate your soul!
