Thomas Pakenham, a distinguished historian of Africa, takes a new tack by writing an old-fashioned kind of book: a catalog of trees of the British Isles. The last such book was published in 1826. In Meetings with Remarkable Trees Pakenham assembles a beautifully photographed gallery of 60-odd trees of Scotland, England, and Ireland, and magnificent trees they are. One is a 600-year-old king oak that looms large over Charleville, Ireland; another is the yew tree that Wordsworth called the "pride of Lorton's vale"; still another is a sequoia brought from the United States and planted in a Herefordshire grove in 1851, where it has since flourished. Pakenham helpfully includes a map showing the locations of his scattered dramatis personae; you could make a fine tour retracing his steps and having a look for yourself.

Inspirational!.......2006-03-27
Pakenham's Meetings with Remarkable Trees and his Remarkable Trees of the World are portraits, not just pictures, each book documenting the impressive presence of sixty venerable trees from around the world. Pakenham groups them by their histories: Natives, Travelers, Shrines, Fantasies and Survivors. Each is a testimony to the majesty of Nature's creativity, diversity and adaptability.
Pakenham shares the unique history of each of these outstanding personalities, in the context of its species and its struggles for survival - ever threatened by man's over-cutting and under-husbandry of these irreplaceable resources.

a Wonderful Tree Lovers Book.......2006-03-17
This is an amazing book from the stunning photographs to the detailed stories about each remarkable tree. It is also scattered with beautifull 18thC etching of illustrated trees that refer to the tree being discussed.I found this book quite beautiful. I would definately recommend this book to anyone who is passionate about trees. Or to anyone who is looking for great photograhic reference as I was.
Beautiful trees, beautiful writing, beautiful book........2005-07-21
If you need a gift for a nature lover or photographer that you really like, this is the book for them. And get yourself a copy while you're at it.
Briefly, the author takes wonderful photographs of trees that affect and inspire him in Great Britain. Included with each tree is a history of the tree and facts and vignettes associated with the tree. His camera-work is impeccable and if you've ever tried to photograph a whole tree you will recognize the talent and work that have gone into this book.
The writing that accompanies the pictures is compelling and interesting. The author has obviously done his homework.
You can lose yourself for an hour at a time, or you can put this on your coffee table and get compliments from your guests, but have one in your library where you can get inspired and calm at the same time.
An Amazing Book! Beauty so deep ..........2004-06-28
Photos so beautiful of trees so magnificent you are moved to emotion. Feelings of smallness overcame me looking at these trees. And feelings of shame at what we, the human race, have done to entire forests of trees. The UK for example, especially Ireland, once almost completely forested. What a loss.
I cannot look at trees the same after this book. I always loved them, but now I can hardly bear to consider cutting any down due to thoughts of what they can become.
Beautiful pictures........2003-08-15
Worth the price for the gorgeous photography.

Customer Reviews:
Learn about cats and how to take care of them.......2007-03-12
I own several cats, and always enjoy picking up a book on cats because I find them so fascinating. This is a good book for the novice cat owner. I liked the many color pictures throughout the book, the history of cats throughout the ages and so much more. This book is more contains more information about cats, and their place in history than it does being a pet owner.
The book has many different sections about where cats have come from, when and where they have been regarded in history, and so much more. This book will give you a good background on learning all about cats. The book does contain some information on owning cats, and how to take care of them.
My copy of the book was a paperback book that is about 8 inches high. I know other reviewers may have had a different experience. I found this book to be very entertaining in learning about cats. If you are looking for a book about how to take care of cats, you may want to chose another book. Overall I found this to be an enjoyable and an entertaining read.
2000 Edition: CATalog.......2003-04-03
I'm submitting my review under this book as it is essentially -- almost exactly -- the same book in a beautiful thick little paperback. I adore this book! Of course it could be because I found "dead ringers" for both my Sabrina (pg60 -- Norweigian Forest cat) & my best friend's Gracie (pg 222-223 in my addition -- a Chartreux) We were both wrong on our cats' heritages. (Adopted.) I always thought she was mostly Maine coon because my neighbor's Norweigian was so much bigger. (Think he's just a tad overweight though.) 'Brina is a fit 15 lbs. I just love her long whiskers, big eyes & loving disposition. She is also good with my little grandchildren.
Anyway, it's like a cat show in a book! Dr. Fogle knows his stuff.
LOTS OF CATS...BUT STILL DISAPPOINTING.......2001-08-01
There is some interesting information contained here but it is still a major disappointment. Unless one physically sees the book before ordering, one can easily take note of the 400 pages and feel they are getting something of value for their dollar. However, it should first of all be noted this book is less than four inches high! I found the book just too overwhelming small and frustrating to bother with and certainly not worth the price.
If the reader truly wants value for their dollar, I highly recommend any and all of the books by Desmond Morris, such as "Cat Breeds of the World." Readers should not be disappointed in any of his books. They contain an endless wealth of information and beautiful photographs of cats. In my opinion, all of his books are worthy of a five-star rating and certainly worth the money.
great book - but watch out for the size!.......2000-07-10
This book was everything I would expect from DK - great pictures, good information, easy to search through, but I did not expect it to be only three inches high! Now I know to look for the dimensions with every book I order. A great book for children to look through, because the book is really to small for adults to use on a regular basis.

Book Description
This volume brings together a rich interdisciplinary selection of some of the best and most up-to-date research in the field of Sephardic Studies by scholars from all over the world. Covering both pre-Expulsion Iberia and the far flung Sephardi diaspora, the essays deal with social and intellectual history, literature, folklore, linguistics, musicology and art history. The volume concludes with an important discussion on education and the future of Sephardic Studies as a field. Most of the contributions in this volume are in English, and a few in French and Spanish.

This revised and updated portfolio includes nearly 200 images by the master portrait photographer. The best known faces of our time have been memorably "Karshed"--a glowering Churchill (his trademark cigar having been just snatched out of his mouth), a beaming Khruschev peeking out from a massive fur coat, a serene Helen Keller reading a book of Braille with quiet delight, a pensive Tennessee Williams at his typewriter, an impish Margaret O'Brien yanking at her pigtails. Karsh's portraits of fellow artists--especially sculptors and architects--are among his most sensitive and intuitive.
Customer Reviews:
An insightful and sensetive look at famous 20th cent. people.......1999-06-15
A wonderful retrospective view of Karsh's most famous photographs. Most portraits are in black and white and capture rare insights of the most influential people in the arts, politics, academics and entertainment. All photographs are brilliantly reproduced, most in full page format. The comments by Karsh reveal personal insights adding a dimension of accessibility to the most revered in our century. There are also numerous excellently reproduced color portraits, which along with the black and white portraits, are reproduced in a wonderful satin finish. There are many portraits from the 40's and 50's including his most famous portrait of Winston Churchill and powerful portraits such as the back of Pablo Casals playing the cello in an austerely but masterfully lit setting.
This book is a genuinely beautiful work of art. It will bring joy to the young and old at heart and will prove to be one of those treasures which one is proud to cherish for generations.
Exceptional photographic studies of familiar faces........1999-03-25
This is a must have book for the portrait photographer. Or for anyone who just enjoys famous faces.Years of wonderful portrait studies of people we all know and admire. These portraits make us feel as if we are really getting to know these people up close. Such emotions are rare to be captured as still images. A SUCCESS in portraiture!!!
Book Description
Sixty Years of Photographs, back in print after many years, is one of the most comprehensive surveys of the power and force of a major photographic figure of our time. Before his death in 1976, Strand spent his last days going over his photographic prints and his many books with an eye to the completion of this volume. Because of his insistence on growth and movement toward perfection throughout his career, and to be true to his vision, the editors examined over three thousand photographs, constituting the main body of the work of Strand's lifetime. This volume, includes an insightful biographical profile by Calvin Tomkins and excerpts from Strand's correspondence, interviews, and other documents.
Customer Reviews:
Valedictory for a Great Artist.......2005-06-01
PAUL STRAND: SIXTY YEARS OF PHOTOGRAPHS is an immensely successful book. Not only is it a true pleasure to renew acquaintance with the famous images of Paul Strand, it is the knowledge that Strand himself selected the images to be included in this book just before his death in 1976. Calvin Tomkins provides a sensitive and insightful history and eulogy and elected to include documents of Strand's correspondence and various writings to round out this memento mori.
But words are words and cannot begin to explain the simple, haunting beauty of the photographic images of Paul Strand. Whether the viewer's preference is for the portraits of mesmerizing faces captured in the direct simplicity of an encounter on the street or for the light sculpted landscapes or the still life images that are rich in metaphor, this collection of Strand's work is simply impeccable. The only appropriate words this reviewer can summon would be those encouraging lovers of fine art to buy this collection. It is Strand's own valedictory to an immeasurably important career. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, May 05

Book Description
In that exciting decade, Britain and France exchanged ideas but devised their own powerful and different responses to the aspirations of sixties' youth - in painting, photography, graphic art, film, posters, fashion, music, architecture and interior design, television, revolution and protest. The striking visual momentos of these years of unprecedented prosperity and consumerism have become almost mythical - from images of the Beatles, the Who and Johnny Halliday, to Pop and Op Art, students' revolts and pleas to make peace and love, mini-skirts and fshion magazines, happenings, swinging London and Carnaby Street, to psychedelic fantasies, material abundance, outrage and scandal.
British Pop music flooded across the world, Quant invented the mini-skirt which was popularised in France by Courreges and Ungaro, CND posters, drawings from Steadman and, in France, comic strips perpetrated protest and satire. The New Wave films of Godard and Truffaut were admired in Britain, and television became central in the family life of both nations. The collection of pictures here shows the work of the most famous artists and designers - Peter Blake, Richard Hamilton, Allen Jones, Pauline Boty and Eduardo Paolozzi as well as Rancillac, Erro, Cueco and Martial Raysse - and of such photographers as Robert Whitaker, Lewis Morley, David Bailey and Sarah Moon.
At the end of the twentieth century, this book examines the effects of the revolution in behaviour and politics brought about in the sixties, as well as generating astonishment, gaiety, the pleasure of discovery and the warmth of memory.
This book accompanied the exhibition 'Les Sixties' at the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery.

Lifeless Review of 60 Lively Years.......2000-05-09
This surprisingly short (less than 200 pp) book attempts a vast sweep of coverage and falls short. Its failings extend beyond gaps, however, which are arguably inevitable in a survey of this sort. One might more readily excuse the gaps (such as omitting AIDS and the gay rights movement from the "Protest and Unrest" section, or JFK's assassination from the section on the presidency), if it weren't for the redundancy of having both a "Hollywood" and an "Arts & Entertainment" section, plus "Fashion, Fads & Fun," which cover far too much of the same ground. Worse, even those who expect less substance from Life than I may have hoped to see are likely to be disappointed by the all-important photos. Far too many are presented in awkward two-page spreads which are crossed in the center by the book's binding, ruining much of the photos' effect.

Excellent photographers - and life is not always friendly.......2000-06-20
"Black Star"? In this case Golden Stars! The book describes in images and text the work of the "Black Star" agency and their member-photographs, and because the agency was founded in a time when photography in newspapers and magazines was becoming a major information source, you will naturally see what has been created for them. So don't expect Art (although some "art" should be shamefull hidden compared to this), but reportage photography from the finest photographers, and pictures of a world which wasn't nice (and still is not for all). The book is also good as a reference for photographers of this time, if you just wish to start collecting.
A good realisation that our lives are not that hard.......1999-01-06
The photography in this book is as expected, brilliant. However I found a concentration of grim images giving people a perception that the world is really a dangerous sad place.
