Easy to follow field guide of the major plants of the Austin, Texas area. Good line drawings. This will not replace Trees, Shrubs, and Woody Vines of Texas by Robert Vines, but it certainly easier to carry

Book Description

INTRODUCTION

St Lucia more than lives up to the paradisal Caribbean stereotype: a glorious mix of honey-sand beaches, translucent waters sheltering reefs swarming with tropical fish, lush interior rainforests and a thriving culture that encompasses literature and theatre as well as music and dance. However, in contrast to other islands in the region, where the tourism infrastructure has been steadily expanding since the 1960s, St Lucia has only recently begun to attract visitors in any number. As a result, tourism has a much lower profile here, and this low-key feel is one of the island's biggest assets. With little of the jaded hustle that can mar more established Caribbean destinations, you'll find St Lucia a relaxed, informal and incredibly friendly place to visit, especially if you venture out of the heavily touristed enclaves in and around Rodney Bay and take the time to explore Marigot Bay, Soufrière and - even more authentic - the small villages of the Atlantic coast and the south. Here, you'll find plenty of inexpensive, no-frills guesthouses, roadside dining establishments and open-air village markets. If you'd rather take advantage of the more established tourist facilities, be aware that those that do exist are typically top-notch and predominantly designed for the rather well-to-do, with luxury hotels, world-class restaurants and large duty-free malls to indulge in the odd shopping spree.

It's probably best to shoot for a range of experiences, and there's really no reason not to: St Lucia's 616 square kilometres are ripe for exploration, and though a rental car is the optimum way to get around, bus links to most areas are good and taxis are always available. If it is beaches you're after, you'll probably head first to the tourism strongholds of the northwest coast, where scores of hotels and restaurants are clustered in Rodney Bay and on the stretch between that village and Gros Islet. Reef-fringed swaths of white sand along this stretch of coastline justify its "Golden Mile" nickname. There's plenty of historical intrigue - as well as more idyllic seashores - at former pirate hangout and British military bastion Pigeon Island, on a spit of land just northwest of the tourist enclaves; the remains of stone forts scattered throughout the area are a telling reminder of the fierce Anglo-French battles for possession of St Lucia, which saw the "Helen of the West Indies" change hands more than a dozen times. South of Rodney Bay, the bustling capital of Castries is also worth visiting, with its grassy town square named after St Lucia's Nobel Prize-winning author Derek Walcott, and a clamorous, colourful market that provides vivid insight into everyday island life. Castries is also surrounded by some decaying fortifications, such as Fort Charlotte and La Toc Battery; the odd wondrous beach is also within easy reach of the city.

These days, visitors are gravitating more and more to the south of the island, where the pace is slower and the bays are lined with brightly painted fishing boats rather than the garish concrete of resort hotels. With a deep-water harbour framed by St Lucia's best-known landmark - the monolithic twin peaks of the Pitons - the attractive, laid-back town of Soufrière boasts gorgeous colonial architecture as well as unusual stretches of dark grey-brown volcanic sand. Within reach of the town are numerous attractions: sugarcane plantations established by French and English colonists have been opened up to the public or transformed into botanical gardens, while the bubbling, malodorous La Soufrière Sulphur Springs have been re-packaged as the world's only "drive-in" volcano. These mineral-rich waters have been harnessed at nearby Diamond Estate, where you can take a restorative bath in an outdoor pool.

Southern St Lucia is also the most convenient starting point for excursions into the rainforest-smothered mountains of the interior forest reserves. Laced with hiking trails, abundant with swimmable waterfalls and home to some rare and exotic wildlife, the forests provide an absorbing alternative to beach life; perhaps the most accessible of these, if you're staying in the south, is the Des Cartiers Rainforest, inland from the east coast highway.

While you're out this way, see more of St Lucia's tropical environment at the protected nature reserves along the southeast coast: the Fregate and Maria islands are home to magnificent frigate birds and endemic lizards, while pristine offshore reefs make for great snorkelling. Windswept, wild and pounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the spectacular beaches of the east coast are better for hiking than for swimming, and leatherback turtles visit more regularly than tourists.

A fusion of French, British and African traditions, St Lucia's Creole culture is an intriguing mix: while the official language is English, the lingua franca is a mellifluous, French-based Patois that employs African vocabulary and structures. Similarly, the local cuisine blends French traditions with island ingredients, focusing on local seafood and root crops originally imported from Africa on slave ships. However, the most conspicuous - and exciting - expressions of St Lucia's culture are its festivals, Christian in origin but African in character. Carnival is by far the biggest event, a colourful, animated round of frenetic parties, calypso contests and parades of revellers decked out in wild costumes portraying spirits and devils - probably most exuberantly celebrated in the Castries area. If you're not lucky enough to be in St Lucia for Carnival, or for the more intimate summer saints' festivals, you haven't entirely missed out. The St Lucian propensity for partying is indulged each Friday when the tiny village of Gros Islet is overtaken by a classic West Indian "jump-up", a street party where tourists and locals alike descend for a night of eating, drinking and dancing under the stars. St Lucia's fastest-growing event, the annual Jazz Festival is a more sophisticated gathering, with some of the genre's biggest names performing under the palm trees of Pigeon Island, as well as in grassy spaces down in Vieux Fort, in the south.

This guide could have used more updated information. In listing
the restaurants in Gros Islet/Rodney Bay some of the restaurants
and clubs were either closed or didn't exist. The other information was accurate like the Sulphur Springs in Soufriere
and downtown Castries. also more pictures and detailed maps should have been included. Overall the guide was mediocre during my visit in St. Lucia.

3 out of 5 stars This book is a little too "rough.".......2004-03-19

I was planning a honeymoon to St. Lucia, however, this book actually made me change my mind! It included reports of Dengue Fever, documented poisonous tree sap, stated that the roads and many of the tourist sights are dangerous & rickety, and also boasted polluted rivers and waterfalls. Although I am not entirely sure about the truth of the text, I don't want to risk it and find out that the book was true. I didn't want to give it a 5 for truth telling, however, I didn't want to give it a 1 for scaring me away from the island...so I'll settle for a 3, you decide for yourself!

2 out of 5 stars Maps Are Lacking.......2004-03-04

I found the three or four maps included were not detailed very well. I was hoping to be able get better maps so I would know what to expect and how to get around.

5 out of 5 stars Mini Rough Guide to St. Lucia.......2002-04-10

I purchased this guide to use on our honeymoon (2001). Neither of us had ever been to St. Lucia before (or even considered it as a destination). This is the first "rough guide" from this series either of us had used but it proved extremely useful. I must admit I was impressed by the accuracy of the information provided and I would not hesitate to purchase another guide from this series in the future.

While it did not tell everything we really needed to know, it definitely lead us in the right direction and helped in planning our itinerary.

2 out of 5 stars Just the facts.......2001-01-25

I bought this book because I am going on my honeymoon to st. Lucia. I thought that it would give some ideas of what the island was like, and what to see there (maybe some pictures of some of the sights). Instead It gives facts for people who are not planning on going to one of the resorts on the island, ie. passports, airlines, rentals. I was a little disapionted I could have found the information in this book online.

The Battles, the Leaders, the Presidents - And How Their Paths Intertwined

Triangle Histories introduce a new concept for American history series. Each title interweaves, intersects, and overlaps with others in its own unique way. And each title provides a different perspective on the broad subject at hand.

Because the Triangle Histories provide a format in which major subjects and themes can be considered from various angles, each collection offers a truly multi-dimensional way to learn and understand more completely. Though each book stands alone, as a set the Revolutionary War collection forms a powerful and engaging way in which to learn about one of the greatest struggles our country has ever endured.

This whole series is just fluff. the work from the companies is great, but the book doesn't give you a sense of it. it's thin, the pictures are unhelpful, not even tasty enough to be eyecandy, and the stories are PR bull. type in the URL instead.

A visually impactful glimpse into the world of Frog... Great thinkers and designers, this shows their best work to date, but to fully appreciate them, the more recent online work should also be looked at. Perhaps an update someday would show the transition from industrial/environmental design into excellent online customer experiences... something that few firms have been as successful at as frog. Great book!

Revised and expanded edition of the classic Mammals of the Great Lakes Region.

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Whistle Pigs, Bog Lemmings, and Wolverines.......2004-05-14

One of the first things I learned from "Mammals of the Great Lakes Region" is not to chase away the woodchuck that has made its den (actually its 'plunge hole') right beneath my bedroom window. It may gnaw occasionally on the deck, but if it abandons its burrow, Professor Kurta opines that a skunk is likely to take up residence.

Plus it's fun to watch the woodchuck amble across the lawn, chomping the heads off of the dandelions--I guess I can put up with the occasional gnawing noises.

This book, first published in 1957 and brought up-to-date in 1995 is filled with the natural histories of eighty-three mammals living in the Great Lakes ecosystem, livened by the occasional wry personal anecdote. There are numerous black-and-white photographs and drawings, including range maps and multiple views of mammal skulls. "Mammals of the Great Lakes Region" is meant to be backpacked into the field and has chapters on capturing small mammals and specimen preparation.

Some of the author's language is specialized but there is a good glossary at the back of the book that explains terms like "altricial--poorly developed at birth, usually with eyes and ears closed, often lacking hair, and requiring large amounts of parental care."

There is no need to rush out and apply for a scientific collecting permit and a set of traps, as the author includes detailed information on the identification of mammals by their signs and habits. For instance, the bog lemming feeds on grasses, rushes, and sedges and since the seed heads tend to be out of its reach, it snips the stems into evenly spaced lengths. This small mammal leaves other clues: "Piles of bright green [excreted] pellets and discarded plant clippings, all trimmed to about the same length, are indicative of bog lemming activity." Another visual: "[Their] runways interconnect feeding sites, toilet areas, and the nest."

"Mammals of the Great Lakes Region" is both fun to browse and good for a straight read-through on a cold winter's weekend, when many of the local mammals are hibernating, or scampering through their cozy tunnels beneath the snow.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book.......2004-01-11

This book is very well written and organized. It is written in a way that the typical nature lover can understand and avoids the technical words that must of us don't comprehend. Its moderate size makes it easy to carry with you, and the photos are extremely helpful in identifying mammals of the region. It is truly a bargain at this price, compared with other field guides that cover the entire continent and give substantially less information on each animal.

3 out of 5 stars Small book with some garden designs.......2003-12-22

Five easy gardens is what you are buying here and is exactly what you get to see. This book is suitable for anyone who wants to see how some other growers do it. Cervantes goes to Europe to interview and photograph growers. He then uses the information they give him to write a book about how they grow. Interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the small timer.......2003-04-29

Jorge Cervantes, Mel Frank and Ed Rosenthal to the literate (not quite stoned out of thier head smoker) these names should mean something, these three guys have not only writen books that have recieved international recognition but have grown crops that have won yearly at the Cannibis Cups, all you people who say you read and review High Times, please take a break from your swag stuff and do some reading. This book is full of info for the first timer and those who want to start and stay on a small scale, if you just want to know how to start this will get you there, but if you are going to hang with the big boys get off the porch and start studying.

5 out of 5 stars Debugging the lies.......2002-02-03

I've read this book several times and found it very useful. Though decievingly complicated, a little extra attention can help you make a cheap and effective system. The top three reviewers are obiously all the same person(they have similar comments and come from the same place; no coincidence). The reviewer didnt even read the book, saying that there is no information on making system. There is plenty of info on making cheap to expensive systems, organic or hydroponic. He then pats himself on the back to sell his own book, whos title i was too disgusted to read. Ignore the above three commments and buy this book, it will change your life.

1 out of 5 stars Totally Misleading Title.......2001-12-07

When I bought this book I thought it looked great and would give me the information needed to set up a small grow system. But, there was absolutely no information about setting up systems of any kind, instead it was all basic info, like plants need water to survive! I just wish that there was an option for negative stars. I would recommend Sea of Green by Hans, Marijuana Grower's Guide by Mel Frank, or Indoor Marijuana Horticulture each of these books, in contrast to this one, give clear and relevant information thatwould help anyone set up a basic grow system.

1 out of 5 stars Very little practical information........2001-11-20

I agree with the other reviewers that this is a very basic book. It really seems to just cover the basic theory of marijuana and cultivation without ever getting into the specifics. There was absolutely no guidance on how to set up a closet system, why you should, what the benefits or problems would be. The illustrations were all of large scale gardens and didn't explain how to set the room up. The color pictures were ok but not anything I haven't seen before.

1 out of 5 stars Just the Basics.......2001-10-23

This book is poorly written, full of outdated information, and is not for serious growers. Might be interesting for a teenager who is considering growing, but lacks the information needed to be successful. I've read a lot of grow books, and this is one of the worst I've seen. In fact, I've thrown it in the recycling bin.

This book is great for the casual smoker that wants to learn to grow but doesn?t plan on becoming a full-scale commercial grower. It?s easy to understand combination of graphs, lists, and high quality images are easy on the eyes and entertaining to the brain. Easy Marijuana Gardening will provide anyone with the know-how to set up a small plot in their basement or closet (or any other place indoors) with little fuss. I definitely recommend this book for a good brief read; at 73 pages this book can?t be beat.

1 out of 5 stars Not very good........2001-12-07

Like most of the grow books this contains basic information that most growers need but there was a complete lack of information regarding how to actually set up a system. Save your money and buy a different book.

4 out of 5 stars A great book for beginners.......2001-12-07

Two months ago, I had an interest in growing, but no real idea about where to begin. Thanks to Ed's book, which abounds with step-by-step instructions, huge full-color pictures, and simple cost-effective growing tips, I now have a closet garden with nine healthy females to be harvested in just a few weeks. I'm no horticulturalist, but the instructions in EMG are so easy to follow that I'm set for smoke for a good long time! Thanks Ed!

1 out of 5 stars No help to a grower........2001-11-20

I've read a lot of marijuana grow books and this has to be the worst I've ever read. I even find it hard to believe that this comes from the great writer Ed Rosenthal, for years I'd followed his articles and columns with wonder at the endless supply of knowledge he posses, but this book doesn't even give you enough informnation to grow one plant! For anyone that wants to learn how to grow, either on a small scale or large I'd recommend Marijuana Grower's Guide by Mel Frank or Marijuana Grower's Handbook by Ed Rosenthal. These books may be older and not as flashy as this but they contain everything any grower would ever need to know.

                          5 out of 5 stars A FUN READ.......2001-07-24

As someone who has much more experience with smoking marijuana than with growing it, I found this book to be informative and entertaining. Clearly, Ed is trying to expand his horizons with this book by reaching out to a completely new audience that approaches the subject in a more casual manner. The book has a great look to it and is filled with photos that work hand-in-hand with the text to give the reader as much info as possible in the simplest manner possible. The text avoids the statistics and elaborate details that characterize Ed's other books and sticks to the basics. Granted, this book is not for the "professional" pot grower but rather for the other 95% of us who have at some point considered growing their own weed. This book is perfect for the novice grower or anyone who has a casual interest in marijuana. To sum up, it's fun to read, has many pictures and is fast moving.

Newspaper columnist, writer and NPR commentator Patricia Raybon admits that she hated whites for years. She even tried unsuccessfully to whip up a similar rage in her parents. But anger got her nowhere. Eventually, in the philosophies of Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi, she found an alternative: forgiveness. The first part of the book is a series of essays on the life experiences of herself and her father, and the racial history of the country; it ends with "Letter to My First White Friend," a grateful acknowledgment of a white girl at her mostly white high school. In part two of the book, further essays explore the process of moving beyond hate, and the new world it has opened up for Raybon.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't Read This Book Fast Enough!!.......2005-11-28

I couldn't put this book down!! I love her writing style. Easy to read, easy to get into, but not easy to put down. I liked the sharing of other people's lives and struggles that she included such as Ghandi and Martin Luther King. I must admit, I have a few other pages to read before I'm finished, but I want to buy a copy for several of my friends for a Kwanzaa gift, so came online to order. This is a good book for anybody to read. And I strongly recommend it to any 'haters'. Hopefully your viewpoint will change too!

5 out of 5 stars My First White Friend: Confession on Race,Love & Forgiveness.......2005-08-06

I brought this book because I couldnot put her other book. This book is interesting because it deals with issues in my own life.
It lends it self to a therapy session everytime you pickup the book. I am not Afro- American but I am Hispanic and have dealt with alot of the same issue that Pat has. But not to the extend she has. She has a way of writing that by the time you finish the chapter you have really gotten to the core of the matter being spoken about.
I will continue to look for books by this author she is great!

4 out of 5 stars great understanding of race relations.......2002-03-25

My first white friend tells the life of Patricia Raybon, an African American women growing up in Colorado. Through her life, she felt on the outside because of her race and did not fully trust Caucassions and held a lot of hostility towards them. However, as she grows and matures, Raybon begins to become friends with a white women in high school. Through her life, she is faced with challenges dealing with her race like people questioning her credential when she teachs college. Through her life, Raybon is able to reflect and come with a better understanding of race relations. She begins to realize that the racial hostility she had can be overcome and that we can all get along.

This book is a great book to read regardless of your race or experiences with other races. We can all gain from a book like this.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for anyone needing to forgive.......2002-01-02

At first, I wasn't sure I wanted to read this book because of the title. But, I had an occasion to interview the author so I decided I should read the book before I went. I found the book to be exceptional in both the writing and keeping my interest.

This book also helped me in some of my own healing because I related to so many challenges that Patricia speaks about that were directly related to her family. The book was about forgiveness and how one woman decided it was time to move on with her life.

Because I work with women regularly who are attempting to do the same, I will recommend this book to many.

5 out of 5 stars You HAVE to read this book. Have to........2000-12-17

I've belatedly begun studying African-American culture and history, and stumbled across this marvelous book. It's not a fast read, because you savor her language--each phrase, each paragraph is rich. But it is a compelling, raw, and honest look at race relations in America, and a very well-written book with beautiful, poignant prose. It should be on _everyone's_ required reading list. I'll try to explain why I feel this way, as this book moved me very deeply.

As a white but "color-blind" American, I feel my life has been vastly enriched by reading this book. I feel I understand so much better what it means to be Black in America from reading Ms. Raybon's words and her heart-wrenching life experiences. I never quite understood racial hatred, posessing none of my own, and through her eyes I began to comprehend the pain many individuals go through every day in this country. I was so unaware, so oblivious to this. My lack of awareness has been a crime. I will never again look at life the same way as I did before reading this book, and for that I am extremely grateful.

As an author myself, and a critical reader, I don't hand out such high praise easily. This book is an absolute must-read for _all_ Americans. Her theme of forgiveness is truly the only way to heal the terrible scars of not only the evils of racism but all human wounds. I would like to thank Ms. Raybon for having the courage to publish this book, and encourage everyone, of all backgrounds, to read it.

Journalist, wife, and mother of three, Claire Newman juggles work, soccer games, birthday parties, and errands. A successful writer at Nationweek, America's second largest newsweekly, she makes her living by being, as she says, "a relentless snoop," but she never was able to figure out why her best friend of twenty-three years, Lydia Finelli, dropped out of her life with no explanation. Claire hasn't seen Lydia in five years, and her unresolved hurt and anger still linger, brought to the surface by a chance encounter at the local bakery. When Lydia calls Claire and asks for her help, urging her to come discuss the situation in person, Claire figures it is one of "life's rare opportunities to tie up a loose end."

But when Claire arrives at Lydia's house, she finds her ex-best friend dead. While all the obvious signs point to suicide, Claire can't shake the feeling there's something very wrong. The irrepressible, feisty Claire starts investigating, and soon the list of suspects includes Lydia's neurologist husband, her psychiatrist neighbor, and even her son's handsome soccer coach. As Claire uncovers the secrets of her friend's past, and their relationship, the puzzle becomes even more complicated, and she finds that she really didn't know Lydia very well at all.

But knowledge comes with a price, and as Claire unravels the mystery of Lydia's death, she puts herself -- and the people she loves -- in harm's way.

Smart and funny, with razor-sharp storytelling, My Ex-Best Friend is the debut of a fresh new voice in contemporary fiction.

2 out of 5 stars Not who dunnit, but who cares?.......2005-10-14

Anyone with half a brain will figure out who the killer is at least half way through the book. The ending is clumsy and requires the reader to make large leaps out of reality/believability. Of course every murderer confesses everything into a hidden tape recorder while waiting for you to pass out! Doesn't every working mother have a live in nanny/housekeeper who tends to your children while you are out solving murders and your husband is out of town?

The book seemed promising in the beginning....what woman does not have at least one friend that she abandoned or was abandoned by. The author should have stuck to that relationship theme instead of writing a second rate Nancy Drew mystery. The characters are 2 dimensional and rarely spark the reader to invest any passion into the plot resolution.

1 out of 5 stars A dreadful waste of time.......2004-03-14

By page 51, I figured out the entire plot without any effort. Dreadful. Don't waste your time!

                                  1 out of 5 stars Did I miss something!?.......2003-10-20

From the first page, I felt the book was badly written and even more badly edited. So I read some more. My opinion didn't change and the story got so dumb that finally I did something I hardly ever do - I stopped reading it.

I really wanted to enjoy it but with this one, don't waste your time. The main character is annoying, the writing sloppy and the ending beyond believable.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Very well-done.......2003-09-03

Beth Brophy's new mystery has everything: sympathetic characters, believable plot, and good writing. It's...well, cozy!

Claire Newman's best friend, Lydia, dies just as Lydia has moved to re-establish contact after five years of extrangement. At first the death appears to be a suicide but of course we soon begin to share Claire's suspicions. Claire's investigation takes her to a psychiatrist, a soccer coach and, of course, Lydia's husband, a neurologist.

The action unfolds smoothly and it is easy to care about the characters. Most people will guess whodunit, but that's not a big deal. Even Claire's investigation fits her character: journalists learn how to dig behind the obvious.

I hope we hear more from Beth Brophy. It's a welcome surprise to find a new writer who's got "it."

                                  2 out of 5 stars My Ex-Best Flop.......2003-08-22

I was excited to read this book because it was featured in the Washington Post, a newspaper which normally is fair and honest with its book reviews. What I found though was this is book is similar to all the other Bridget Jones Diary-wannabes who try to make a modern suburban angst book.

The plot was determinable within the first 30 pages. I read the book from cover to cover because I wanted to see whether I actually had guessed the who-done-it and I in fact had. It was filled with cliches from start to finish and seemed to be a conglomeration of every genre the author has read and seen since birth. The conversation, retorts, thoughts were all predictable and really boring.

The aspect of the book that bothers me the most is the name-dropping of location and materialistic what-have-you. I too live in the same area in which the author lives and I too understand the "Bethesda-Potomac-Metropolitan DC" mind set. However, it seems to me that the author is more at a crux as to whether she is for or against the very lifestyle she embodies. She obviously tries to show disdain for it but at the same time she pathetically shows how much it means to her to identify with that certain mentality. ...

At any rate, this is one of the most sophomoric books I have read to date. Given the fact that I am relatively young but well read, it bothers me that this book was so poorly written, was so poorly developed and yet still got the reviews that it needed to be entered into a credible newspaper. I think that we have beaten the horse dead enough, people. We don't need any more present day reality books written. I think they have become a dime a dozen and the modern reader can read more than the drivel this book has to offer.

Do what I should have done. Save your money; buy this book on clearance or wait to borrow it from a friend or the library.
