Book Description
A powerful trilogy concludes with a look at both famous and lesser-known forces in the ongoing struggle for civil rights.
In the summer of 1955, Moses Wright braved mortal danger to testify against three white men accused of murdering Emmett Till — a brutal event that helped to spur the American civil rights movement. Nine black teenagers in Little Rock, Arkansas, headed out to a formerly white high school, despite warnings that "blood will run in the streets." James Lawson trained activists not to fight back with fists or words, no matter how many billy clubs rained down on them. Through ten turbulent years, black southerners filled jails and public places with the songs and strength passed down from their ancestors. This final book in a trilogy about the African-American experience is a tribute to the crusaders for equality and peace in America, a crusade that continues to this day.

Discovering shark books.......2005-09-12
Nancy field has produced an accurate, thoughtful and interesting book
for kids. A major stumbling block in protecting sharks is their bad
reputation and the many myths that have sprung up about these
magnificent predators. Field has written an exciting and factual book
that will help set the record straight with the most important
people-our children!

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to Amazon.......2004-04-14
If you grew up watching those "Jaws" movies then Nancy Field's educational and environmentally friendly children's paperback probably won't cure any fish phobias you might have developed. Then again, if you're old enough to remember "Jaws" you may be a little too old for "Discovering Sharks and Rays." It might, however, be a good idea to look it over before your next outing to the beach.
Filled with interesting facts and figures about a seemingly endless variety of elasmobranchs, the scientific name for the carnivorous sea dwellers, "Discovering Sharks" informs in a straightforward way that, at times, gets, well, dry.
But the cool stickers make up for it. Labeled for easy reference, the kids can have fun decorating their book or decorating their parent's oak furniture with them.
Besides the stickers, "Discovering Sharks" includes a nifty board game that teaches about birth rates and the threat humans pose to the ecosystem.
And Field successfully conveys the message of who is the truly dangerous species. For example, five people were killed worldwide by shark attacks in 2001, while as many as 100 million sharks are killed by humans in any given year.
Still, Field includes tips for a safe sea-faring experience with unintentionally humorous illustrations, by Michael Maydak, of a swimmer punching an aggressive shark in the snout and of the similarity between a surfer and seal.
Most children probably won't read "Discovering Sharks" from cover to cover, but a variety of activities are bound to keep children interested and learning.

Eric Sloane-Master of the Ordinary.......2005-10-04
Eric Sloane wrote "Our Vanishing Landscape" in 1955 as the United States was entering the Atomic Age and our rural past was rapidly vanishing. He wanted to document through his wonderful illustrations and writings, a material culture that would soon be gone.
Sloane's take on American history ignores the big names and the famous dates. He is more interested on the mundane and ordinary. Sloane's point of view is that most Americans were farmers a hundred years ago and therefore had to master a whole series of skills that are now gone. Purchase this book, if you want to see how are ancestors lived and functioned on a daily basis. Sloane's wonderful illustrations are like a window into a time that is long gone.
Eric Sloane's books are addicitng. If you like this book, you will have a whole series of outstanding books to purchase. In this same vein, I would also recommend the works of Edwin Tunis, another master illustrator an historian of America's material culture.
early american life.......2000-03-23
This book presents early american real life on the farm with many wonderful detailed illustrations. Learn how a grist mill works, how roads were dug, how stone walls came to be, and other wonderful information about early america. The illustraions only add to the reader's understanding and amazement at how ingenious, hardworking, and skilled our early american ancestors were.

Essentail reading for wierd architecture junkies!.......2000-05-12
If you're fascinated by what the authors term 'rogue architecture', this book is even more compusory owning than its previous editions! This definitive folly-hunter's guide now is clearly broken down by British counties, and even better, now has an Ordinance Survey map reference for each of its three-dimensional eccentricies, so there should be no more futile driving up back lanes in quest of the architecturally absurd. A book to live in the glove compartment of your car - when you're not gloating over its extensive photos and engaging text in the anticiaption of planning more folly-hunts!

Customer Reviews:
For those that still do this..........2007-09-11
This book is a nice and detailed overview of the process, but for me the best part has to have been the darkroom setup ideas for "alternative" spaces. If you've got very little room to work with but you're stubbornly attached to the idea of setting up your own darkroom, this book is definitely worth a look.
The perfect book!.......2004-08-15
This book is amazing. It really has everything you would need to know to build a darkroom, from building the walls, doing plumbing and electricity, to how to build a sink. I am so happy I bought this book - there were so many little things I didn't even consider until I started reading this book. Now I know what I need to build the darkroom, and can actually envision what it will be like. I have so many ideas, and I'm really excited about building my darkroom!
This is the book you want if you are going to build a darkro.......2003-03-14
This is the book you want if you are going to build a darkroom. It is excelent! I got another book and half of it was how to build a wall using drywall. This one was not like that and really had plans and technical information that you want.
The only guide you will ever need to building a darkroom.......2000-04-01
I just purchased this book because i am planning to build a darkroom in my basement, and it has provided me with alot of information. And if you have a really small bathroom and you think it's impossible to turn it into a darkroom and use it at the same time, then you better get this book. There are floorplans/layouts & elevation provided, as well as pictures to give you an idea of how your darkroom will turn out. There are so many alternatives given that you can't go wrong in builiding the perfect darkroom of your own and save money as well.
A GREAT BOOK FOR LESS THAN PERFECT CONDITIONS.......2000-02-14
I found this book to be very practical and direct. What impressed me most was that the authors took into account the fact that not everyone has the ideal accomodations for a darkroom. Each section goes into the how-to of every phase of setting up a simple, basic to the sophisticated darkroom. Everything is spelled out in detail allowing you to "opt out" of any part of the process that you feel may be "over your head" (call the plummer) and to deal with those that are within your reach. In between, the book allows you to peek at how others have set up their facilities. Over all a great book for anyone looking to set up a dark room the "right way".

Customer Reviews:
Nothing like it!.......2001-08-06
What an excellent guide to photagraphy, with excellent pictures as well. As I started to look at this book I saw talent on first hand. The way each picture supported a different figure of photography. I hope to see more books like this one and 'Capturing the Night With Your Camera' soon.
Pretty Darn Informative.......2000-07-26
This book addresses a realistic approach to the current world of photography. It's not just digital cameras and computers: it's film, illumination and composition. Carucci feels that certain ideas are necessary to produce a good image regardless of the technology. The book is well written, though it seems that some of the passages, especially at the chapter beginnings, are a bit too creative. The book doesn't read like a textbook. Instead it's friendly, especially to the newbie. His introduction is poignant and the images are incredible. The kid turned into a statue is both shocking and wonderful.
Good book for contemporary phohotography.......1999-10-26
The author of this contemporaray photo manual is not caught up in the technology, rather he uses a common sense approach to new technology. The book starts off with the thought process and preaches conventional rules of pictorial composition, instead of the technical jargon that so many books of this type contain. One has to go no further than the book's introduction to realize that Carucci bridges the gap between art and technique. As for the images, I forgot for a moment that this was an instructional manual. The artwork is first rate. That's not to say that the writing is less than clear and informative. I especially liked the child/statue composite. I recommend this book to anyone interested in digital photography.
Very Cool........1999-06-14
This one is better than most of the books in its category, although by far is not one of those "most complete guides". Good writing style, Real life examples. Type of camera, film and exposure settings are listed next most of the example pictures. What this book has that others don't, is a pretty good overview of digital input and output(especially printers and scanners), and how it's related to "film" photography. Highly recommended for beginners.
Book Description
Wednesday, November 7
My father gave me and my brother a little money. My stomach is all twisted up with hunger, but I don't want to spend the money on anything as frivolous as food. Because it's money my parents earn with their sweat and blood.
I have to study well so that I won't ever again be tortured by hunger. . . .
In a drought-stricken corner of rural China, an education can be the difference between a life of crushing poverty and the chance for a better future. But money is scarce, and the low wages paid for backbreaking work aren't always enough to pay school fees.
Ma Yan's heart-wrenching, honest diary chronicles her struggle to escape hardship and bring prosperity to her family through her persistent, sometimes desperate, attempts to continue her schooling.
First published in France in 2002, the diary of ma yan created an outpouring of support for this courageous teenager and others like her -- support that led to the creation of an international organization dedicated to helping these children . . . all because of one ordinary girl's extraordinary diary.
Customer Reviews:
what is this book about.......2007-03-14
this book is about a girl's strugels to go to school and how she had her dream of going to school she wrote a letter to her mom saying that she wanted to go school because she didnt wanted to stay home and work she wanted to go to school
A very touching story.......2007-01-28
I loved this story because of Ma Yan's spirit. This is the true story of Ma Yan who stuggles to stay in school in spite of her families severe poverty. She does not give up no matter what obstacles she faces.
Excellent read.......2007-01-09
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am only sorry that more of her diary did not survive. Ma Yan proves herself an articulate young woman. And this book will make you appreciate Americans' access to education and opportunity.
An eye opening look at life in rural China........2006-06-27
I enjoyed this book, though it is painful to read about the poverty and hunger Ma Yan and her family experienced. As mom to a daughter from China, I can't help but wonder if my daughter's life would have been similar, had she not been adopted.
This book was also very hopeful, as Ma Yan's diary brings her some fame and brings world attention and help to her family and schoolmates.
The Diary of Ma Yan.......2005-09-16
I came to find out about this book by listening to an NPR interview of the French journalist who originally was given the diaries by Ma Yan's Mother. His interview was so moving that I ordered the book from Amazon. Ma Yan was writing about her life in a village where no foreigners had been in more then 60 years. I have since given this book as a gift to several girls and boys of Ma Yan's age (12-13-14) so that they can read first hand what it's like for kids their age in a remote part of our World.
This book is a lesson for all ages. Well worth reading.
