This book is awesome. We love Maine and this book has helped us explore it. I tell everyone I know to buy this book if they are going to Maine, whether it's their first or 30th time there.
"...An Explorer's Guide" is the tops.......2006-04-29
"Maine: An Explorer's Guide" was my first purchase in the series. Since then, I have used "Vermont..." and "Maryland...". While perhaps not ideal for novices in a region, they are excellent for one who has some familiarity with the state one is visiting. The descriptions of history, geography, cultural and recreational offerings; and the listings of inviting, independent restaurants, shops and accommodations have always been accurate, informative and insightful. If you are likely to visit more than once, or stay longer than a few days, this is the book for you. As a piece of advice, buy a good map to go with it.

Guests frequently take it with them on their day trips and
I have found it to be full of very comprehensive information
on what the State of Maine has to offer.

My husband and I re-located to Maine in 1995. We have used this book extensively to plan day and weekend trips around the state. There are so many wonderful places to explore and this book always gives us some good tips and starting points. We currently have the 10th edition.

This was just a so so book on Maine. It has some good stuff and some not so good stuff. I bought it because it was the only one in the store with an extensive section on the little town of Kittery which is near the border with New Hampshire. It was a good section and I got a lot of information and use out of it. However, when I started reading the rest of the book I kind of got a little lost. The sections on "where to eat" and "selective shopping" were confusing because they were organized differently. They've put phone numbers for places without an area code and directions like "North along Route 1" which doesn't make any sense to me not knowing where anything in Maine is. I suppose it would be a really good book for someone with some knowledge about Maine or someone who actually lives there and wants to get away for the weekend or something. On the plus side the maps were really good and the photos were nice (black and white, but nice). My copy had five pages in a row that were upside down. Not sure what that's all about. I wasn't able to make it to Maine on a trip I made to the area, but I plan to go one of these days and I will take this book with me when I do because it still has a lot of good information.

A concise, entertaining chronicle of an amazing discovery........2004-06-16
The discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb is probably one of the most famous and significant contributions ever made to the study of Ancient Egyptian religious traditions. But, the unusual events and mysterious deaths of numerous people linked with the opening of the tomb that soon followed, and the growing, widespread belief in a curse guarding the young pharaoh's mummy is now a legend almost as famous as the discovery of the tomb itself.
Drawing his information from a rich selection of sources and carefully piecing it together in as factual and chronologically accurate account as possible, the author takes us in an exciting journey of exploration, adventure and sinister developments. He offers a realistic portrait of the men behind the discovery, a clear picture of the breathtaking treasures of the pharaoh, and an excellent look at the events that sparked the imagination and gave way to the belief in an ancient curse.
As a bonus, the book is illustrated with pictures of Carter's 1922 expedition, includes a very detailed chronology of relevant events, presents a full plan of the tomb, complete with measurements, and gives us an introductory survey of early Egyptian life and culture.

Great for information on illness, but not so hot on care........2004-01-29
I love the section on rabbit diseases. Its very easy to look something up and it does cover a wide-range of diseases that most rabbit books don't. However, many of the opinions on rabbit care that the author has I do not agree with.
From the very beginning the author states that young bucks are easier to keep and train than older animals and those of the female gender. After going through the teenage stages of several rabbits I swore off adopting a rabbit under the age of two. Older rabbits, in my experience, are more predictable and less destuctive indoor companions. As for gender issues, I haven't noticed a difference in ease of training between altered males and females.
Later on she advises small rabbits as good pets for children. The hefty weights tend to be more laid back for kids. Sure, the kids have trouble picking them up, but kids shoulding be picking up rabbits anyways. Rabbits don't like it.
As far as diet goes, a pet owner is advised to look elsewhere for information such as "The House Rabbit Handbook", or their website rabbit.org. The same can be said about her advice on house rabbits.
There's some interesting information in this book, but I only recommend it to someone who is already quite familiar with the proper care of rabbits. As a beginner's book there is just too much bad information.

I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning about their rabbits in depth. The book covers history, all aspects of rabbit care - pets (outdoor & indoor), show, breeding, meat & fur - types of housing, feed, anatomy, diseases, treatments and an extensive list of rabbit breeds. The chapters are kept short and to the point in an easy to read format.

This is an excellant book for people familiar with the basics and wishing to move beyond "a shrub in a pot." Adams is a world class teacher of the art and science of bonsai, but his books are hard to get. They are worth the effort.

As always, Peter has managed to say some new words about his first love which is bonsai. There are many helpful guidelines in this book that we can all use when designing our trees. Peter is a real genius at this task.

Book Description
This study deals with the intricate problem of the deuteronomistic composition of the book of Kings. Its particular aim is to reconstruct the compositional process underlying the final chapters of Kings. The literary-critical assessment of these chapters is a central issue in various theoretical models on the composition of the Deuteronomistic History. The author draws attention to the - often crucial - importance assigned to the Manasseh pericope and related passages in this assessment. He notes that in many models the appraisal of these texts appears to result from general theoretical concerns rather than from an independent literary-critical analysis. This study fills the need for such an analysis. The results lead the author to advance a fresh view on the composition of the last section of the Deuteronomistic History.
