I received this books as a gift and was hooked from the start. The author's got a way with words, and he makes all his subjects interesting, some of them fascinating, and many of them downright funny.
Contrary to another reviewer's stormy opinion, I liked the short, timeline-centered format. The title says "brief," not "totally in depth." But Fairbairn doesn't skimp on details, either -- he just doesn't try to cover all of agricultural history. This book has led me to think and read more about some of the topics he's exposed me to, which is really what a good book should do.
A thoroughly enjoyable read.
It's in chronological order..........2002-09-21
The only thing that kept me from giving this book a no star is the fact that it is impossible to do so and, indeed, it's at least in chronological order. The book is a mish-mash of facts that read like an extended sidebar to missing content that would "connect the dots" for the readers. Lots of pictures, but none of them with captions or any meaningful symbolisim to let you know what "spurt" of histroy it's connected to. Check this book out carefully in your local bookstore or library before sending away for it.

Enhanced with 350 illustrations, the text also features a time line to guide the reader through eras of agricultural trends and places events and movements within an easily identifiable context of human history. The short essays address a wide spectrum of subjects from what the Japanese noel "Tale of Genji" tells us about Japanese flower fetishes, to how herbalist healers were targeted in the Salem witch trials, to what the "Kama Sutra" has to say about gardening. A Brief History Of Gardening is highly recommended for anyone who has ever enjoyed the feel of working the earth to bring forth a crop, or labored in a grove or vineyard for the season's harvest, or simply shopped in nursery for seeds, plants or bulbs for their household garden.

One of the basic theories of politics, put forth by Aristotle centuries ago, is the theory of the middle class and its causal link with democracy. According to Aristotle, a large, prosperous middle class may mediate between rich and poor, creating the structural foundation upon which democratic political processes may operate. Beyond Aristotelian theory, the specifically commercial nature of the middle class is also made central, as the democratic institutions of law, power limitation, and electoral participation were carried by a commercial middle class. This volume traces the development of democracy and the rise of the commercial middle class from ancient Greece to Renaissance Italy, to post-feudal Europe. Socialism, communism and fascism are discussed as reactions to capitalist-democracy. The book concludes with an analysis of the structural and cultural bases of democracy.

I have read volumes 1-12 and am so pleased with all the volumes which are full of adventures and lives of the related characters which the author has skillfully created. I also love the stories being woven around history. I love the family tree diagrams. I am so pleased that I am looking for other volumes after 12 if there any written. I feel like I must have more. This declaration alone, at a time where postmodern self-congratulation is so often confused for deep thinking, has nurtured my writing and reading of poetry more than any of the many books I read about the poetic craft.
This book is more than a collection by a poet speaking of what he's dedicated his life to, it is a treatise on how to live one's life. This is not something I'd say about many works, yet here is stunnigly clear.
Replace the word "writing" for "life," and you decide ...
"When I write, I like to have an interval before me when I am not likely to be interrupted. For me, this means usually the early morning, before others awake. I get a pen and paper, take a glance out of the window (often it is dark out there), and wait. It is like fishing. But I do not wait very long, for there is always a nibble--and this is where receptivity comes in. To get started I will accept anything that occurs to me. Something always occurs, of course, to any of us. We can't keep from thinking. Maybe I have to settle for an immediate impression: it's cold, or hot, or dark, or bright, or in between! Or--well, the possibilities are endless. If I put down something, that thing will help the next thing come, and I'm off. If I let the process go on, things will occur to me that were not at all in mind when I started. These things, odd or trivial as they may be, are somehow connected. And if I let them string out, surprising things will happen."
I recommend it to budding poets, those whose writing is growing tired, or anyone trying to make sense of being in this world. People like me perhaps, hoping for some guidance who -as Nietzsche wrote- earnestly endeavour to "becoming who you already are."

William Stafford has a way of writing that makes you feel like a welcome guest in his house. Here he talks in prosaic passages about what is important in writing, how to inspire your own writing, together with examples of his own work.
Reading this book is much like reading Stafford's poetry. The tone is relaxed but captivating, and he makes the task of writing well seem effortless. This book, together with "You Must Revise Your Life," is a fantastic read for writers of any level or ability.
