Botanist's Little Helper.......2007-03-18
This is a pocket guide for the enthusiast. Some prior knowledge of the terms used would be useful but it does what it says on the cover. I wish that I had found it before my last two trips to the Rocky Mountains but I will be taking it to Alaska this summer and hope that it helps there too.
great for identifying unknown wildflowers during your hike.......2004-04-06
Of all the wildflower books I've seen, this one does the best job at helping you identify your unknown flower. This book uses a decision tree that guides you to the flower by answering questions about the flower's characteristics. e.g. if flower has regular shape go to p. 12, if irregular go to p. 15. Next, if flower has basal leaves, go to p. 20, etc. The book has an explanation and drawings of the terms used for identification. It has line drawings and written descriptions of the flowers. It is small and easily fits in your pocket for a hike.
Excellent flower book.......1999-10-30
My family has always been very nature oriented, which may explain why I have become the owner of several of the "finders" books. Since moving to Colorado, I have watched for flower books and been disappointed in two I purchased. This book is exactly what I was looking for. At a picnic in the mountain woods, a guest brought a strange stalk in from a hike. It was covered with little pumpkin-shaped pods. Finding Pine Drops in this wonderful pocket-sized book sold it to me on the spot. When I went back to the same location the next year, I looked for the plant but didn't find it. Now I know I should not have been looking for a green plant, but one without chlorophyll. Aren't plants fascinating!

Suitable for information only - not for a travel guide.......2006-08-23
I purchased this book as a travel guide however it is more suited for those arm-chair readers. Having just returned from this region on an Artic cruise, many of the landings on my itinerary are not covered in this book. And many of the destinations in this book are rarely visited so I would not recommend this book as a travel guide to Svalbard. You will find more useful information on the search engines.
The author devotes too many pages on technical information rather than as a practical guide. Other travelers on the cruise had the same comment about this book being impractical.
Reliable Info on Northernmost Landmasses on Earth.......2006-07-27
This book is a great source for curious minded people who wonder about those hidden Islands within 500 miles of the North Pole!
It is amazing to note that this island of Svalbard, most commonly noted as an obscure territory in the game "Risk," has such an astonishingly warm climate due to the same Mexican Gulf waters that fueled Hurricane Katrina! Its capital city is Longyearbyen and the highest temperature ever recorded here was 21.3 degrees Celsius, confirmed in this book and elsewhere. That's approximately 70 degrees farenheit and in proximity to the North Pole equal to that of Washington, DC in relation to Boston,Massachusetts. Interesting to note, eh?
I think there's multiple purposes of using this book, whether planning to camp out in this warm haven in the far north or learning what's at the top of your sphere, purchase this now!

GREAT!!!!!.......2007-08-16
2 things - 1) you have to do the dissolving egg experiment... it's fabulous!! 2) pay attention to the age range - my nephew (the intended recipient) loves science (okay, exploding things...) just turned seven and he is definitely too young for the detailed explanations. He didn't like the delayed gratification but he did get a kick out of the results the following week... for the younger kids you might want to do the experiments yourself and then once you have results let them get excited about it... the bouncing egg... after accepting that it didn't happen just then!! ... was a huge hit the next week. This really is just an AWESOME book...
Great intro to Science for kids.......2007-05-14
My 7 year old daughter and I have been going through some of the experiments in the book. The experiments are easy to follow and the explanations are basic enough for a 7 year old to understand.
Fantastic!.......2007-05-08
The experiments are simple enough to implement yet the results are very REACTIVE! Which is GOOD!
Also the kits are not difficult to find. Just stuff you'll have in your kitchen, really.
good choice to start some new things with a youngster.......2007-01-12
I am happy with the choice and so was the family who received it as a gift for their young daughter who is ready to start something new to do with her father in the cold winter months of Maine.
Fun, fun, fun!!!.......2006-08-28
I have a just turned 5 year old that LOVES science and experiments. Although this book I believe was recommended for older children, there are plenty of experiments that I can do with him at his age and get immediate results. Since there are experiments that are targeted for older children, this is one of the rare books that we'll be able to use for several years down the road. I love it so much it's going to be one of my staples in gift giving - it's easy & fun enough for those even not interested in 'science'.

The story that is threaded around the challenge paints the principle of universal love and the brotherhood of mankind with the colors of romance, passion, politics, conspiracies, love, religion, wide horizons, even a universal sense of marriage and scientific moral freedoms, reaching for a platform where the impossible becomes achievable. And so the race is on. Is anyone daring to join the protagonists?

Book Description
A six-inch square isn't a lot of space to convey the essence of a seventy-four minute selection of hot jazz, smoking blues, or mainstream pop, let alone the raucous noise of the colorful, image-conscious "alternative" scene. Yet, a decade into the compact disc revolution, CD packaging design has evolved into a rich pop art medium. This book shows how designers of blues, jazz, and pop/rock CD artwork use the limited space in the booklet, jewel box, tray card, and disc itself to create images that complement the music and musicians.
In the pages of The Best Music CD art and Design, more than 300 full-color images showcase 200 CDs. Informative captions explain how the design fits the music; quotes from artists, designers, and record company art directors give further insight to the creative process. Surveying the best designs of the 1990s, this volume is sure to inspire CD designers for years to come.
Customer Reviews:
very limited to mostly poorly designed blues covers.......1998-11-11
The title is very misleading in two ways. One the title simply states it's the "Best Music Cd Art + Design" when it's focus is the Blues. Second is that the book uses the term "best" which doesn't apply here at all.
Beautiful album cover art with discussion about each........1998-07-03
A wonderful book! Taking the time to look closely at selections of music CD art is a worthwhile pastime. The authors have selected the best in three genres: Blues, Jazz and Rock/Pop. They have interviewed the musicians, designers and producers about the process of creating the packaging design. Interesting stories of how art was chosen, who has input and how it relates to the music are all included. And the book is beautiful to look at!

The fact that many birds learn to talk (and know what they're saying!) is proof that birds are not just a pretty addition to the living room. Bird owners know that their pets have unique personalities and that they demonstrate their thoughts and feelings. This book explains why birds behave the way that they do, how to recognize behaviors that indicate boredom, stress or poor health and how to work with a pet bird to modify undesirable conduct.

my two wonderful blue and yellow golden macaws.......2006-08-08
hi, my husband and i seem to be having difficulty in mating our birds, some days, they both seem to be enjoying eachothers company, but yet, other days ,they seem to fight like they hate one another. weve been told to put them in a different room where they will be alone and have privacy, but iam afraid that abbott (female) will rescent us or feel that we dont want her anymore. do we stop handling them all together? our birds are very needy, love attention, effection, to be held and played with, how can we get them to mate without making them feel hurt, not loved, ect.? abbott(female) is 12 years old and gizmo(male) is about 10 years old, i know that abbott would be a great mother to her babies, think she needs this. please help us to try and learn how to do the right things the right way. my birds are like my kids, i love them and would do anything i possibly could to give them a happy home, and keep them knowing that their loved. thank you so very much, very glad to have found your page on my computer tonight, have a great day or night, GOD BLESS YOU, rick and christine mcknight 7-8-06 2;03a.m.

Interesting, light reading.......2000-08-16
This book is not authoritative but rather anecdotal in presentation. The author does not present herself as an avian expert, but does provide some good, "readable" information in a easy going format. It is comprehensive, and DOES cover a wide range of species. True, the author's Grey, Sinbad, is mentioned and shown throughout the book, but other species do recieve her attention. She recommends nuts and bolts for toys, but fails to mention that they must be free of zinc. (Stainless steel for example). I would not rely upon this book as my primary source of information, but rather as supplemental to other more authoritative texts written by avian experts.

Book Description
Parrots are sensitive creatures whose intelligence is often grossly underrated, and, as a result, frequently exhibit behavior that is misunderstood by their owners. This reference guide to owning a parrot answers questions about problems and tensions between these feathered creatures and their owners. The basic elements of parrot psychology are explained, as are environmental factors that can cause biting, screaming, and feather plucking. Case studies of specific relationships are used to illustrate both good and bad examples of the pet/owner relationship.
Customer Reviews:
great book for all.......2003-06-17
To the person who wrote the review stating about the Back remedies I say that homeopatic remedies can be a valid alternative medical treatment in some cases, (it is even in people many times) and Rosemary Low states that one should be "reffered to a homeopatic vet", and not just administer different essences as one please to a sick parrot. Closing this parenthesis I think this book is an excellent reading for new parrot owners who want to learn the most on how to keep their new friend happy and healthy, for old owners who want to understand some behavioural motivation of their parrot, and lastly for breeders who sell hand fed babies and should therefore understand parrot education and much more (hopefully to the advantage of their potential buyers).
Recommends useless quack treatments.......2002-12-24
This book does a great disservice to pet owners by its endorsement and recommendation of unproven alternative treatments.
"Bach" remedies contain alchohol and have never been tested or proven effective as treatment for any medical or behavioral problems by any recognized scientific study.
Why does my parrot...? Good advice, nice format.......2001-01-03
This is a great book with excellent basic information and advice written for the PET parrot owners. The format is especially helpful for finding the appropriate information quickly. I found the chapter on different species profiles to be the least interesting; It could have been omitted. Still, I consider this book a "must" for all first-time pet parrot owners and those who do not have a lot of time to research and read on parrot behavior.

Excellent, FOR WHAT IT MEANS TO BE.......2006-10-16
Based on other reviews I purchased a used copy, and feel it is an excellent introduction for parents, students, and more serious-minded "civillians" like me. It's important to rate a book by what it intends to do; this does not intend to speak to an experienced acting student looking for a tome of advanced rehearsal drills,or a wanna-be Semi-Pro who already knows many basic ins-and-outs of getting started, or perhaps has a little bit of performing under their belt and is indusry savvy. This is a book for folks staring 100% "cold." You work during the day, or you're in high school and have never done a single act of public speaking or performing, but you've got "it," meaning the desire to perform and embrace the arts in some way that fits into your obligations as a Spouse, Parent, Boss, Co-Worker, or Student.
This not the book for passionate theater lovers who already know exactly how to put together a press kit or have nice headshots. It's for those who've never heard of a head-shot and assume it's the bullet that killed Kennedy.
The reason I bought the book is two-fold. I made a decent chunk of income as a Tavern Singer for 10 years, till 9/11 and the economy killed my day job leaving me with a wife, new baby and no health benefits. I had to lay down the Arts as a money maker. Now, my child's a little older, things are more stable and I want to start getting back into performing but wanted the perspective of a true working actor who made a living at it and was excellent on stage. You see. that's the second reason I bought this book: I saw Paul Baldwin whhen I was @ 13. He was AMAZING. I never had a conversation with the man, never met him or shook hands, but when it comes to acting heroes, he's mine. In the book he mentions his many times playing Cervantes/Quixote in Man of La Mancha, specifically one time which was such a runaway hit, the Thearter by the Sea in Matunick, R.I. cancelled the remainder of the 1979 season to do a second run of the show. He was riveting. I can't say I'm a musical fan per se, but I don't dislike it either. This show blew the audience away. I saw Kiley as well in 1983 in Boston, and while Kiley and Bladwin were equally powerful, on the whole, the overall production/cast was stronger in R.I.!
Sadly, Ive been informed recently that Paul Baldwin passed away just a few years ago, shortly after this book was published. I hope the information is incorrect. If its true, then America lost a great un-sung working actor who obviously carried himself humbly, like the great Kiley before him.
If you're a total newbie, but serious about getting some great introductory info, I'd say the book's well worth it. If you're already in pursuit of that goal, buy a used copy for an enjoyable read by a great actor and, as he recommends, pursue voice and acting lessons one on one with teachers to develop your talent. The only addition I'd recommend for future printings would indeed be a small chapter which includes some typical lessons in body movement, voice excercises (vocalizes), some soliliquies, 2 person scenes, etc. It would seem to me that it would improve the books potential audience.
Should Mr. Malone, or someone who knew Paul Baldwin well happen to read this minor tome in criticism, I would love to hear from you and ask a question or two
What no mention of the great Olivier?.......2006-03-14
Laurance Olivier was considered the finest actor of the 20th century and he doesn't appear to make it in here (he's certainly minus from the index). About what its says about overrated method acting giant Marlon Brando having the ability to speak clearly when his son was on trial and Marlon the witness stand the latter mumbled his speech as he did in most films. Maybe it took many outtakes to get MB to speak clearly for Julius Caesar as this book claimed he spoke clearly for that film. The book was way too weak, brief and easy on method acting techniques as they often call for actors to get really beaten on just for "authenticity". Shakespearean acting (as most English actors do) is preferable to method acting.
Significant Endorsement.......2005-12-20
'The Complete Idiot's Guide to Acting' is a well-written, practical manual. As Russell Crowe wrote in the Preface, 'I figured that if it worked for Jim Carrey, it'd work twice as good for me, even though I'm not a complete idiot because no-one's perfect.'
Find a school.......2005-08-14
Interesting very, very, very basic approach to acting. Will give you the basic tools, then go and find a school.
(...)
OK.......2004-09-23
The book was OK to read, but as far as learning about acting, it didn't teach me much. Maybe a local library or a friend has a copy of this book?

Customer Reviews:
A great ready, a great start into theatre.......2007-08-24
A wonderful book for those looking for some theatre basics. The logistics planning sections are great. The extra references in the appendices are very useful. The budget management section is a bit short and lacks some more details. However, the book accomplishes what it needed to: give the reader a good first glance at the complex world of producing a theatre play.
Invaluable for the amateur theatre company!.......2007-08-23
I got all the help i needed to build an amateur theatre company from the book. From choosing the plays to putting a winning team together to financing a show to licensing issues to working with actors and crew to scenic design, lighting, costumes, rehearsals, the whole enchilada. It even has a sample production calendar, a week-by-week schedule. It tackles everything from assembling a team to auditions to strike set. And it gives a list of licensing companies and the corresponding musicals/plays.
I like the little sidebars too. GREMLINS gives out warnings. BACKSTAGE WHISPERS gives you useful insider tips. ON STAGE gives you real-life theatrical events. DEF-I-NI-TION of course defines theatrical terms most amateurs are unfamiliar with.
Then there's the appendix which gives you suggested readings (where i got the titles of the other books i purchased) and online resources (for actors, directors, and a list of theatrical suppliers)
Read This Book!.......2006-12-06
Oh how I wish this book had been around when I first became involved in community youth theatre! It clearly lays out essential information for any amateur working in theatre - or anyone working with amateurs in theatre. It covers everything from getting started to cleanup, with specific and practical discussions of all aspects of financing, organizing, mounting and enjoying this wonderful participatory art form. Very worthwhile.
