Terrariums: An easy guide to growing a host of miniature.......2000-03-15
I thought this was a wonderfully good book. It emphasizes the art form, as well as the botany of terrariums. A nice directory of plants suitable for various types of terrariums. The section on Orchids is very provacative.

good overall book.......2007-09-11
i like this book since it covers all of southern utah. the feature i use most often and like best is the way they rate all the hikes. i do what i can and can't do, how long it will take and whether or not it's appropriate for kids. it also gives useful information such as average temperatures and nearby towns and what they have available such as restaurants, showers, laundry, stores, etc.

A great guide. Not only does it have the usual food and lodging recommenddations of usual guidbooks it also has great trail descriptions. this was the main reason I bought the book. Each trail guide is headed by distance, duration, Elevation cahnge, Effort and trailhead location. This info helped me narrow down the best hikes for my allowed time. Three good color maps in the front of the book: Southern Utah, Zion and Bryce, plus the various maps in the book with major roads and unpaved roads in the hiking areas. Highly recommennded especially for planning day hiking trips.

I was planning a photo trip to utah and so collected a large number of books on the area. I would rate this book as one of the best and most useful. It gives very handy hints on planning your trip. Most guides have so much info you can't wade through it all. This Moon guide assumes you have only a limited amount of time and helps you make decisions appropriatley. Highly recommended.

A perfect introduction for the beginning bibliophile........2001-02-26
A wonderful book for the novice bibliophile. This slim (87 pp.) volume is a relaxing and enjoyable afternoon's read. It mixes helpful hints on how to read dealer's listings with snippets of historical lore and suggestions for must-have reference books. I learned that 8vo in a dealer listing referred to the dimensions of the book (not the number of volumes), that the pulp that formed the basis for early European paper came from recycled underwear, that the reference book I was just outbid on on Ebay was one that I really DO want in my library and more. Two things sum up my reaction to this book: a immediate desire upon finishing the book to write the author and tell him how much I enjoyed reading it; and the feeling of kinship I had when I read one of the included quotes - one that I want on my tombstone when the time should come.

Best gardening book, so far........2007-09-06
I have been reading numerous gardening books. This is my favorite! The other books are usually good but assumed the reader new the basics. This book is an easy read, and it includes so much practical information in a conversational tone that I couldn't put it down. That is saying a lot for a non-fiction book. My other great find is Apprentice to a Garden.
So much more than a typical garden primer.......2006-04-17
I don't even remember how I found out about this book. I bought a used copy on Amazon about a year ago and am today ordering another copy as mine is falling apart and diry from being used outside. I couldn't garden without it in my Zone 7 shady garden with horrible clay soil. Along with the basics on gardening it is a personal, opinionated account of creating a garden. I may not ever grow the exotic tropicals Ms. Benson loves(I am too lazy to dig them up for the winter) but there is so much information in this book on what to grow, how to do it and what to combine it with you are sure to find something you love. Be aware that there are no lush color photographs, just some black and whites and line drawings. Love it, Love it, Love it!

I love to read books about gardening, and the best ones are also autobiographical.Dianne Benson Has imagination ,guts and grit!!I was hoping by now that she has written a new one because I read this one every year in the spring.She is inspiring about what to plant and how to plant and does her homework about the latest stuff out there.She is funny,personal and very, very sharp. This book is fabulous!! It is an entertaining book as well as extemely informative. This is a must-have book for the beginning gardener - but easily appeals to the expert as well. My copy is very well worn around all the edges!!

As the ower of a fixer-upper, I was immediately drawn into the book by Diane's description of her own property and house at first view. "The house was awful. Sort of '50s and not even gracious enough to be called ranch style. But the property was so raw and beautiful and overgrown....." I can relate!
This book is delightful and informative down to the details of what you should expect to pay and who has the best selection. Who would have guessed that a fashion maven like Diane B. would comparison shop so astutely. I love this book and very happy that it's been re-printed since I'm now telling all my friends about this delightful tomb.

Wow!! What a Book!!!.......2003-02-19
Any theatre buff will think he or she has died and gone to hog heaven. It is virtually impossible to put this gorgeous book down. Put together by the archivists who work for the Shubert Organization, this book covers Broadway with the Shuberts for the past 100 years. Currently the Organization owns 17 Broadway houses. A history of each theatre and what has played there is covered on these pages. The photography and beautiful design make this one of the best coffee table size books I have ever seen. And I have quite a collection. You won't regret your purchase!

An amazing book that I couldn't put down. The Shuberts have compiled a great tribute to Broadway theater. It's worth the money if you are a theater history buff!
The Shubert family did not present a 100 years.......2002-07-03
As far as I know, no Shubert family members contributed or added to the writing of this book. As a result, I disagree with the title, The SHUBERTS Present: 100 Years of American Theater. It should read: The Shubert Foundation Presents:
With a little research the author could have located our small family around the country to interview or get a thumbs up to fly.
Also, I don't think the Shubert Foundation "IS A GOOD THING", as mentioned in the end of the book. Consider the dark,sinister,devious and backstabbing individuals within the organization, taking over The Shubert Theaters after the very untimely and questionable death of J.J. Shubert.
The lawyers that once worked for the Shuberts now represented the "Foundation" garanteed the family would never have anything financially to do with the theaters again.
Think about it, what family would merrily walk away from Three Quarter's of a Billion dollars...Unless they were scared or frightened?
I believe the young Grandchildren of J.J. have a right to know the tragic truth regarding the takeover of their rightful dynasty. Someday soon I will tell them the story of their Grandpa and Great Grandpa and theaters they built. The most spectacular art forums in this country.

A stellar publication that covers all the bases!.......2002-03-13
I purchased this book shortly after its publication and it has fast become a treasured element in my collection.
The publication (yes, I know it's a bit pricey) covers all of the theatres currently owned and operated by the Shubert Organization in New York City (and a few across the country).
The beautiful, full-colour spreads give details that the average theatre-goer would not be able to see in a visit. History abounds in the richly detailed text that encompasses 100 years of American theatrical history.
There are many production photos that add to the story that each individual house holds in its history. Many of these shots are previously unpublished or are quite rare to say the least.
I can fully recommend this book to any person who holds a love of the theatre and/or the unique architecture that composes this luxurious world.
Note: The Winter Garden Theatre does not have a large spread of, shall we say, post Cats-era photographs (the way it would look today). I wish that the publishers could have waited a few months to get the new shots, it is a beautiful house.
All in all, I'm sure many will agree that the 5 star rating I gave the book is well merited. Don't let the price scare you, the endless hours of great reading and history will make the cost seem minimal.
