A WELL WRITTEN AND WELL ILLUSTRATED BOOK. I HAVE FOUND THIS BOOK VERY USEFUL FOR IDENTIFYING THE FERNS OF FLORIDA. I DID NOT KNOW THAT THE STATE HAD SUCH A VARIETY OF SPECIES.

Not the best selection for Ixtapa.......2004-02-09

I bought this book to find out information on Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo. Unfortunately, only about 20 pages of the book is dedicated to these 2 locations, and the information is very limited. However, if you are looking for information on Acapulco, you may be in luck, there are about 80 pages on that location. If you are looking for information on Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo, check out Lonely Planet's, "Mexico's Pacific Coast", much more infomation can be found in there.

Needs more..........2001-07-05

Of 182 pages, only 29 are about Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo. Also, there is too much emphasis on restaurants and hotels and not enough information about the location. I am fairly confident that I can find a place to eat when the time comes. What I want to know is: "what is there to see and do?"

However, the information that is in the book is helpful and well-written. I would recommend this book as a place to start but not a complete or even moderate guide.

I found this book to be disapointing. It seems to be pretty good at listing where to stay and where to eat but greatly lacks in the "what to do" department. Supposedly written by someone who has lived and traveled extensively in Mexico you might think the book would be filled with an insider's view on where to go and what to do. I'm going by cruise ship and they've provided me with more information on what there is to do in these places than this guide. I'd put this on the "there's got to be a better guide" list and pass it by.

All of Mary Dobson's "Smelly Old History" books are an excellent way for elementary students to learn history and take whiffs of the many foul smells along history's timeline. The kids get so excited to smell the next foul smell they forget they are learning historical facts as they go. My first grade boy loves the books, but loves scratching the smells best. Some of the facts are a bit beyond 1st grade and younger, but they will still love the books. Ideal for 3rd-5th graders, who have some knowledge of ancient history and can remember names of people and important events in history. Excellent and fun choice for any elementary age student as a gift or for school.

"Victorian Vapours," and the other books in the Smelly Old History series, provide a fun way to expose the reluctant history student to some aspects of history. Dobson provides seemingly accurate information on some of the more common aspects of daily life during the Victorian period. The books are quite enjoyable and recommendable.

This collection of new essays, substantial expansions and elaborations of papers read at the 1987 York Manuscripts Conference, focuses on the complex relationship between Latin and vernacular in late-medieval texts and manuscripts. It includes examinations of many facets of bilingual literary culture, covering texts which incorporate both Latin and English materials, texts which are extant in both Latin and English versions, and texts which illustrate the problems and implications of translating Latin into English. Attention is paid to the ways in which the supposed difference in status of these two languages is reflected in literary and codicological practice. There are also discussions of the production of both Latin and vernacular manuscripts in the province of York during the late 14th and 15th centuries, and of the European dissemination of some spiritual writings in Latin. There is much to stimulate the critic as well as the codicologist, and those with broad interests in late-medieval literary culture as well as specialists inmedieval literature and languages.

I agree that this book is not for tech. ref. but is more of a commentary on why men are so obsessed about lawns and mowing and having the "Perfect Lawn." Many people have asked me why I love lawns and grass and mowing. I could not answer that. He(Mr. Scultz) answered that question for me perfectly and eloquently. He draws a story in your mind and this is one book you won't put down until you are finished with it. I loved it and I read it all day long, And I am a landscaper!

Enjoyable history of the lawn, not a how-to-do book.......2000-04-04

Overall I liked the book, especially its coverage of the history of lawns. I guess we all assume lawns have always been there, which is decidedly not the case. On the other hand, as a how-to book it needs some work. The author gives numerous recommendations on lawn care but never mentions something as important as adding lime to bring up the pH when necessary. Good coffee table book, but I'll look for another how-to lawn care book.

Wow! Every thing you wanted to know about your lawn and then some. Warren Schultz has made it easy for the man who only has the weekend and then thenmaybe an hour or two to get rid of mold, fungus and unsightly weeds. It is loaded with information for the casual grassologist, but it is written in a user friendly, humorous fashion. Everyone should find a place for this book on their must read list.

The Victorian family album is one of the few surviving records of everyday life in the second half of the 19th century. This book is a comprehensive study of portrait photography in Victorian times. Portrait photography began with the introduction of the daguerrotype process in 1839. This established photography as an alternative to painting but, at first, photographers continued to be strongly influenced by painting traditions. In 1898 Cather Borland married George Macartney and, as a bride of 21, journeyed with him to one of the least accessible places on earth - Kashgar in Turkestan, on the remote borders of India, Russia and China. George Macartney represented Britain at Kashgar from 1890 to 1918. Officially he was responsible for looking after the interests of the small British Indian community there, but unofficially he kept a watch on the activities of the Russians. For at that time Kashgar was Britain's most advanced position in the Great Game, the long and shadowy struggle with the Tsarist Russia for political and economic supremacy in Asia.
