The Visual Method for the Practical Identification and Recognition of Shrubs (and vines and ground covers) -- and an important supplement to existing botanical methods.
The book is in two parts: Pictorial Keys and Master Pages. The Keys are designed for easy visual comparison of details which look alike, narrowing the identification of a shrub to one of a small group -- the family or genus.
Then, in the Master Pages, the species of the shrub is determined, with similar details placed together to highlight differences within the family group, thus eliminating all other possibilities. The details of laurel blossoms on this plate are an example and are followed in the book by details of laurel fruit, leaves, and bark.
All of the 3,550 photographs were made specifically for use in this book and were taken either in the field or of fresh material carefully selected from the more than 20,000 specimens collected. Wherever possible, details such as leaves, fruit, twigs, etc., appear in actual size; otherwise, similar details are reproduced in the same scale.

A Very Useful Book.......2005-07-21
While it is nearly a half century old, it is still quite relevent, as well as being easy to use. It is, unfortunely, all b/w photographs (no clumsy line art), but they are very sharp & clear, and the colors are printed next to the pictures. No matter what part of the plant you have available, there is a pictoral key you can use to identify the plant.
Identify, however, is the operative word. The only other information given about the plants is the scientific name, approximate flowering date, range, and height. Once you have identified the plant, you will need to look elsewhere for more info, but it is the most comprehensive book of it's type I have found. There are numerous books on what you can do with any given plant, but first you need to know what plant you have. That's where this book really shines.
best shrub identification book.......2005-07-07
This book is the best manual for the identification of shrubs and shrubby plants. The photographs are in black & white. There are a set of master pages and then sets of pages with flowers, leaves and fruits. All are very descriptive and enable one to identify with only parts of the plant.
We just were able to identify low alpine plants that look herbaceous using this manual.
I have had this book for a long time and like it so much that I just purchased another for a friend. I am pleased to know that it is still available.

I think this book is great. I've been able to id almost every tree/shrub we've got in our woods (I also purchased some of the other books by this author so I can id vines and things too). True the pictures are in black and white but it really isn't a big deal. You're looking at leaf shape and vein designs and things like that - it would be green and white if it were in color. I think its a terrific reference and I'd buy it all over again

I bought both Symonds' Shrub guide and Tree guide. They are both terrific! The Shrub guide has not only shrubs but also vines and ground covers. It has plants that I've been wanting to be able to id for ages but because the only book I had found until now were wild flower guides, I was always at a loss. This book is fantastic. It has master plant pages a the back so you can look at all the parts of the plants together (I use this when i have an idea of what it might be already and just need to narrow it down) or you can go to the parts sections in the front of the book and go to "leaves" for example and search that way. Its the best approach I've seen and the pictures, although black and white - are terrific. They show great detail and actuall because they're b/w you're not confused by variations in color. Definitely one one my best books - the one I go to first.

We used this guide to choose and find trails to hike during a three week trip to Hawaii in 2002. We only went on 9 of the 44 hikes described, but this guide was nearly ideal for us with clear and easy-to-use descriptions and instructions.
well rounded reference............2003-08-26
As time is of the essence while travelling, I wanted to make the most of my time on the islands. This book allowed me to explore and choose a hike that was perfect for the length of my stay. I felt comfortable with the route laid out on paper. I was dissatisfied with THE BUS route and scheduling on Oahu as compared to the simple statement under how to get there. I had to explore a different route and connection but felt that THE BUS system was to blame. Otherwise, I felt that the book did sufficiently lead to the perfect hike for me at the time. The trail was beautiful and I look forward to using the book again down the road.

Awash with skullduggery, malice, terror, and opportunism, here are 28 first-hand memoirs and contemporary reports of the most famous pirates to sail the seven seas, including Blackbeard, Captain Kidd, ‘Calico Jack’ Rackham, Anne Bonney, and Jean Lafitte. These range from the Golden Age of piracy, beginning in the mid 16th century with the birth of the ‘buccaneers’ in the Caribbean, to more recent times.
Some of the accounts covered are Francis ‘Scourge of Spain’ Drake’s audacious night treasure raid on Nombre de Dios, the capture of Panama by Henry Morgan, cruelest of the ‘Brethren of the Coast’, Alexander Exquemelin’s fly-on-the-wall telling of the ‘wicked order of pirates or robbers of the sea,’ and the journal of William Dampier which was found stashed in a hollow bamboo tube, after he fled life as a Somerset farmer.
In addition, this book offers the Pirate’s Code of Honour (article 4: lights out at eight o’clock, 'if after that hour any still remained inclined to drinking, to do it on open deck'), a listing of pirate songs, and a full pirate chronology.

Swash buckling fun and full of info.......2007-04-11
Amazing book, chock full of facts from the horses mouth. Many of the tales printed are from actual journals, documents, diaries, manifests etc so its very interesting to hear first hand stories of these tales. Some of them are a little hard to follow as most of the author wrote in 3rd person but other than that its awesome.

First of all I'd like to comment on the previous review. It is clear that the reviewer stopped reading the book within the first chapter as their review is based completely on a poor chapter to begin a book. After you fight your way through that one first chapter and give the book a second chance, you won't be let down -- that is if you find history interesting in the first place. Some chapters are written by actual pirates and some are written by historians. Either way, each chapter is fun and interesting. If you want to learn about pirates, I recommend this book.
A cheap, hastily piled-together jumble.......2006-06-09
With The Mammoth Book of Pirates, Lewis has done little but compile several first-hand journal entries relating to historical pirates into one volume. The accounts themselves are often dry, somewhat archaic, and lack any real narrative flair. The book as a whole has no continuity whatsoever, and offers only a brief, vague, and poorly researched introduction to each (apparently) unedited piece.
If you are interested in raw primary sources, and patient enough to wade through tedious descriptions of foliage and ship manifests, you may enjoy this book, but I doubt it. Don't expect any kind of story to unfold before you.

This book is a source for visual designers, architects, and interior decorators. It is a reproduction of the plates of a larger theoretical opus Hessemer published around 1840, collecting interesting mostly geometric designs from Italy and Egypt. This has no text at all after the publishers note explaining this, and a list of the plates and their sources, followed by 120 pages of color plates, many with multiple designs. The reproductions of the old plates have lost something through the generations, and aren't particularly accurate regarding the details being presented. When you actually go to Italy and see these things, the reds will pop your eyes out. Docked a star because it's pretty dull here. A clever people would scan the images and alter the colors both to match their needs and to approach the correct clarity and intensity.
The publisher claims some restrictions on rights to reproduce the designs: "You may use the designs and illustrations for graphics and crafts applications, free and without special permission, provided that you include no more than ten in the same publication or project", and, "reproduction of any illustration by any of the graphic service [...] is prohibited." You'd think anything published in 1840 would be Public Domain by now.
We may use the 4th down on plate 96 (parts of the mosaic bands on the Duomo of Florence) in our entry hall.

Little book, BIG advise!.......2006-12-13
Pete Davey has once again writen a great little book. However, don't let the tiny size fool you, it's loaded with tons of information that will help aspiring marine mammal trainers break into the field. From his own beginnings to sound advise on writing a great resume and interviewing tips, Davey's book is for anyone looking to have a dolphin in front of them!
Helpful, but not very in-depth.......2006-12-05
I purchased this book after having difficulties transferring the advice from various "mainstream" resume books to my search for a job in the animal care field. I had heard that there was a section specifically on resumes, and thought it might be helpful.
When the book arrived, I was a bit surprised. The book itself is very small in size, about the size of a 4"x6" photograph. I was able to read it all in about a half hour. Overall,I feel it would be a really useful book for high school age kids who are unsure about where to start on their path to a career in dolphin training, but not for someone with experience in the field. The resume section was very vague, as was the interview section.
Overall, the book was OK, but not the resource I expected it to be. Unfortunately, there are very few books on the market dealing with the unique challenges faced in this career field.

this book is great for people who want to persue the carrer of bcoming a marine mammal trainer. i myslef have always dreamed of becomeing a trainer and this book gave me great pointers of how to become one. I thoughrougly enjoyed reading this book.

This volume deals with the social legislation of Zhu Yuanzhang, who founded the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), following the era of Mongol rule in China. It recounts the circumstances under which the laws were enacted and what the Emperor claimed he was trying to accomplish - a restoration of traditional Chinese social norms. The contents of several codes are discussed in terms of the groups to which they applied and the range of activities they purported to regulate. The early Ming codes formed one of the most comprehensive and cohesive bodies of law in all of Chinese history. Taken as a group, they constituted an autocrate's blueprint for the ideal society. The texts of three codifications - an imperial clan constitution, a general summary of the laws, and guidelines for village life - are translated as appendixes.
