Romance, Recipes and Remedy Folklore.......2003-03-30
The presented material of commonly found wild berries is done in summarized fashion, making this book an easy read. Plus it's all very inviting, rich with quotations, eye-catching color photos and wonderful illustrations, giving the book much appeal.
Wild berries of merit are divided into three sections and those found in the first two chapters are described in a basic layout with: Introduction, Description & Locality, Edibility & Recipes, Etymology, History & Folklore plus Reputed Medical Virtues. It also goes through various common names given to many wild berries. All of these details, which include some idea for bloom season and ripening season, are mostly provided for general idea, kept very basic. With even less information highlighted in the following chapter aptly labeled Minor Berries. Before the book ends it also furnishes a brief notation of fifteen poisonous berries, in common and Latin names but simply says to avoid them, giving no visual description beyond the four pictures, or any other useful clarifications for awareness. So the book is not very consistent with providing adequate information and a few times I had questions come to mind and where not being answered as I continued to read. For the more than thirty different berries found within, this book alone is not really well suited as a source for indentification.
The many recipes supplied are quite interesting and most are vintage. One recipe that struck me as curious, found on page 32 was for a 17th Century Blackberry Wine, I also loved the author's trick for a Bloddy Mary drink on page 100, using juniper to get a flavor of gin without the alcohol. Not all recipes are very practical or necessarily healthy, calling for generous amounts of sugar, but there is at least something to experiment with. Recipes to be found range from jellies, jams, syrups, wines, drinks, pies, puddings, other desserts and more. Not much is provided for instructions on making remedies. Mainly just interesting American Indian medical folklore and comments on past usage and beliefs throughout history. A sample of the wild fruits highlighted in this book (in common name) range from strawberry, blueberry, blackberry, various raspberries, elderberry, bayberry, gooseberry, cranberry, currants, mulberry, mahonia berry, may apple, hawthorns, rosehips, sumac, saw palmetto, wintergreen, pokeberry, snowberry and many, many more.
In addition to her wonderful introduction on the topic, the author does a lovely closing chapter to the book as well, telling more of her personal accounts, memories and opinions on the beneficial aspects of harvesting from the wild, which uniquely, is where an added touch of romance falls in. Certainly is great as casual reading for the experienced berry hunter and because of its good advice it's a decent introductory book for the beginner.
The Wild Berry Book is the book to buy! A+++.......2002-09-16
If you are looking for a book to buy that has great color and depth in each picture and you really want to know what berries your about to pick if they are poison or not......this is the book to buy.....it's not like a lot of books that have pencil sketches of a berry...what a joke those are when so many berries look a like! This book is GREAT! You won't be sorry!
Thank you Lee's Books in St. Paul MN for such a beautiful book and fast order!
So many berries!.......2000-06-12
Having been a berry lover and berry picker since a young girl, I found this to be a very lovely and interesting book. Lovely for the beautiful pictures of so many berries. Interesting for the variety of berries pictured and described. There are so many berries I've seen and wondered about, not daring to pick and eat, or being aware they are edible, not knowing how they are to be eaten. Now I have a reference. The book is a feast for the eyes with lots of useful information. A good book for wanderers of the forest who come across these delicate fruits and wonder.

Customer Reviews:
Good advice.......2007-05-28
If there's one thing the Philippines has in abundance, it's water and diving. I picked this guide up to help narrow my selections down, since the amount of spots to go to is simply overwhelming. It helped narrow things down a bit, and from there you head to the divemasters and started hitting the spots one at a time. This book will definitely save you time.
Diving in the Philippines, Details!.......2007-05-02
This book is wonderful. It educates the diver with degree of skill, pros and cons of each site, photos as applicable, and maps. It's a well rounded, informative guide and I recommend it. The maps are not as they could be, but thats why you go out with a group and dive master.
Nice concise guide.......2006-09-20
This book was well laid out and an easy and interesting read. It covers all the main diving areas throughout the Philippines. It gives a brief description of the terrain, difficulty, what you will see and the general conditions you will experience on diving to each location. It also gives tips on traveling to each location, though this could be a little more thorough, due to the difficulty of getting to each site. This book is great if you are planning a dive trip and have no idea which areas to head to. It allowed me to pick certain areas and islands to research further on the internet. It will be a great resource to take to each dive shop when deciding which dives to participate in.
Lacks map of fish. .......2005-09-23
Very good and contains a lot af info. Lacks a map of fish.
It would be nice to have pictures of the fish you are going to see.
The best Diving Guide to the Philippines.......2003-02-14
Well written guide with alot of information and contacts for dive locations throughout the Philippines, well worth the price even if just snokeling. Covers Malapascua in northern Cebu, Southern Leyte, best diving around, and Camiguin plus all the well known sites. Alot of good maps.
Customer Reviews:
Lots of detailed info & resources. Sloppy editing........2007-02-03
This book is Pre -tsunami. & Pre-enviromental-ban for Sipadan
CONS:
1) This edition is basically the same as the 2nd edition. If you have #2 then you don't really need #3. Just call ahead and make sure the LDS info is correct.
2) Although some of the information may have been updated since the 2nd edition, sloppy editing ruins the book. Maps are not on the page indexed and are not on the page referred to in the paragraph. You'd really expect better editing and not just #2 regurgitated with add-on info.
3) Many of the contributors also have their own Dive Guide/Book published, so you may find some duplicate info.
4) Doesn't list all major dive shops in the area, (but it comes pretty close). Doesn't list dive shops on the smaller islands (not even reputable ones).
5) Publishing company extremely rude (Periplus Singapore) and unhelpful to the public when called at the number listed.
PROS:
1) Maps of the entire region are very helpful especially if you want to be sure whether you are diving island 3 or island 4a. & your dive guide doesn't know - unfortunately happens more than you think since everyone wants to do their divemaster/instructor training course here. Just show the boat captain the map and he'll tell you.
2) This book packs a lot of detailed info on each and every area and dive site. All you need is a Guide that knows where the fish are and how to get back to the boat.
3) This book often contains more pertinent and detailed info than many "single area" books out there.
4) All the contributors are highly respected and very well-known in their own areas and beyond. Most are regular contributors to dive magazines and have their own guides published. Some still take groups out despite owning their own dive shop, travel agency, internet cafe, Tshirt stand, satay and fruit juice stall.
5) Good quality photos and paper.
6) Nice map of the region inside the front cover.
Overall one of the better dive books out there. You will find this one really helpful for:
*Planning dive trips in S.E. Asia
*Knowing where you are
*What to look out for at a site/area
*Alternative dive resources for S.E. Asia (Lists of websites diving & otherwise).

Very Good First Reference Book.......2003-12-10
This book is not a "How To", except for perhaps the floor loom sampler. I agree with the comment that the history is the best part, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I also enjoyed the explanations of fibers and yarns. It reads like a college text and has been used as a college text. This book is very good for a broad introduction to weaving and some other related fiber arts.
Don't waste your money!.......2000-05-31
Don't waste your money on this "handbook". There aremany better books on weaving. This book reads like a collegeinstruction manual for students who will never continue on in weaving. The historical section is the best part of the book. Following the simple historical info section are completely pathetic section on card weaving, inkle weaving and loom weaving. ( ) this book is way way way overpriced! Maybe if it was offered (it for less money) I might purchase it again as a very simple reference manual but I would have some doubts at that! END
An excellent college textbook.......1998-11-04
This book is the standard college textbook at the two universities where I studied weaving, and includes historical information, practical instruction, and design information. The practical instruction assumes you have a floor loom. Recommended.

Dog-doo.......2000-08-19
Not worth the price of the paper it's printed on! And it's in paperback!!!
Fabulous training tips for every dog...and every dog owner!.......2000-07-11
Martens' energetic style of training the pet *** and the owner*** is fresh, logical, easy to follow, and something other trainers overlook. Her approach of people-training is essential and she's taught *me* to have patience with my pup, making the training process all the easier. It is obvious that she has a real passion for what she does and that she does it well. The step-by-step instructions, hints for owners of both new and adopted/older dogs, and the stories of how her celebrity clients have overcome their dog-training hurdles are fantastic. Not only is this method effective, the book is fun, too! Paws for a Minute is perfect for anyone starting a new adventure with his/her first puppy, and it is a great refresher course for anyone who has had a dog previously and has just taken in another.
Outstanding.......2000-07-05
This is an outstanding book in every aspect. It is well written, funny, informative and most of all very useful. Ms. Martens approach to not only train the dogs but their owners is very effective. My black Labrador is already behaving better and now I look forward to walking him down the street to my local coffee store!
Essential Tips for Dog Owners.......2000-06-15
This is a must buy for ALL dog owners or for anyone planning on getting a dog. If your dog scratches you furniture or bolts out the door the book gives good advice as to fixing the problem forever. It really helped me control my 2 year old Rotty. Now Mr. Growls is the perfect pet!

Book Description
Since they were first described in Europe in the 16th century, passionflowers have held a special fascination among plant collectors for their bold, beautiful, complicated blossoms and delectable passionfruits. Most are perennial climbers, but some are trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, or even annuals, and all lend a dramatic, tropical flavor to any situation. Since they have such a broad range of cultivation requirements, passionflowers can be grown by just about anyone, and cold-hardy species can be grown outdoors year-round. This authoritative, comprehensive volume describes 207 Passiflora species and 31 hybrids. A chapter is devoted to the remarkable coevolution of passionflowers with Heliconius butterflies, which many passionflower enthusiasts now raise alongside flowering vines in the greenhouse. As lushly illustrated as it is informative, Passiflora: Passionflowers of the World reveals the immense variation found among members of this extraordinary genus.
Customer Reviews:
passion flowers.......2007-01-29
I've found this book to be more than informative. It helped me to identify a volunter that sprouted up in my garden. This book gives you information on the history, cultivation, propagation (various forms), and most inmortantly in depth descriptions with beautifull color photos. It make you want to have all the passion flowers you see!
It also has info on the butterflies that feed on them. I would recommend this book if you really are into passion flowers.
Fantastic photographs - Great for Gardeners!.......2005-04-18
Hundreds of gorgeous photographs and lots of information about a flower that is not well known, beyond the usual nursery varieties. Passionflowers are a spectacular species and this volume tells you how to grow them, where they are found, the legend associated with Christ's crown of thorns and even more detailed knowledge for horticulturists or biologists. It's a good buy just for the pictures alone. The authors are experts, yet communicate clearly for everyone. Some of these flowers are out of this world!

Book Description
Body and Soul is a collection of striking black-and-white images of breast cancer survivors. It presents a thoroughly inspiring and original look at a critically important subject for millions of women.
Customer Reviews:
Captivates your soul.......2006-11-08
A look into the lives and hearts of real women around the world. Jean demonstrates that the strength and beauty of women transcends any challange that life may presents. She created a sisterhood of women across all walks of life and around the world.
An Uplifting & Beautiful Book!.......2004-10-15
Ms. Karotkin's powerful photographs truly capture the spirit of her subjects, whose stories of coping with breast cancer are told through brief vignettes. This is an inspiring, provocative book that challenges American ideals of physical perfection and redefines what it means to be beautiful. I imagine "Body & Soul" will resonate with anyone who has either experienced breast-cancer first-hand or known someone who has; but I hope that all those teenage girls who aren't happy with their bodies will also read this book and take its message to heart.
