Book Description
Written for ranchers, landowners, 4-H-ers, veterinarians, and anyone interested in wild or ornamental plants, Toxic Plants of Texas is a complete, practical guide to 106 of the most common poisonous plants in Texas.
In a handy, well-illustrated format, experts Charles R. Hart, John C. Reagor, Bruce B. Carpenter, A. Catherine Barr, and Tam Garland provide descriptions of each plant, explaining where it grows, what makes it toxic, and how much an animal must eat to be affected. They also offer a primer on different kinds of poisoning, lists of symptoms, and strategies for treatment and prevention. An overview of integrated toxic plant management summarizes an economical and environmentally sound approach to reducing livestock losses by controlling toxic plants. At the back of the book, a field key cross-references animal symptoms with plant species.
An abundance of excellent color photographs aid in the identification of each plant's toxic features, including the flowers, fruits, pods, and roots.
Customer Reviews:
great info.......2007-07-18
This book is very specific about what animals each plant is toxic and how toxicity shows up in that animal. It gives tips on how to help that animal and when to call the vet. The opposite page usually shows three views of the plant being talked about - the bloom, the whole plant, and the leaves.
This information is available online, but is much handier in book form.
Native Plants of Texas.......2004-10-22
This is a marvelous book for anyone interested in the native plants of Texas. The color pictures are superb. This book covers many of the common Texas range plants that are not often considered toxic except when eaten by livestock to excess. It also describes the really poisonous ones in detail with clear photos.

Customer Reviews:
GREAT REFERENCE BOOK!.......2004-12-15
If this book had more pictures in it, I would have given it 5 stars. However, overall it is a very through book. We used it to create our new "The Best Florida Beaches / Waves Virtual Vacations" DVD here on Amazon. So, if you want to really see and hear what these beaches feel like, check out our DVD after reading this book.
Florida has a huge variety of beaches overall from the Keys to the panhandle and back down the Atlantic to Miami. You will see the beaches change radically in color (white, sand, orange, grey) and texture (clay, shell, and sand). Having shot the best beaches from the Caribbean, California, Hawaii, I'd say Florida has some of the best and unusual orange / yellow sunsets, I've ever seen and despite being very flat, has some very diverse and spectacular beaches. Enjoy!
Indispensable guide for the beach lover.......2003-07-23
The authors rate the beaches using a scale from 1 through 5. A beach rating of 1 indicates an "abysmal [beach]; keep driving;" a five indicates an "extraordinary [beach]; beach heaven."The criteria for the ratings aren't clearly spelled out, but become apparent upon reading the reviews.Areas with with plentiful beach access points, free parking, uncluttered views, amenities (such as showers, bathrooms, volleyball nets, etc.) are likely to rate highly on these authors' scale. The information here is well-researched and plentiful. The authors do make the point to bring up which beaches are good for those who want different types of beach experiences: surfers, families with young children, college crowds during Spring Break, adults looking for a quiet beach vacation, etc.Naturally, there are comments about sand and wave conditions and other notable conditions at the beach in question. An example: a note about the rocks which hide under the surf in Satellite Beach which can cause one to lose their footing, and for which there is no posted warning. Now that is useful information for the beach-lover who enjoys the surf, and as far as I know, is unavailable elsewhere. There's plenty of other good information here: where to stay, eat, drink, shop, rent bicycles and skates and other exercise gear, and attempts to provide an overall feel for the beach town (i.e. upscale, trashy-but-fun, snobby, havens for Brits on holidays, and more.)The book is unabashadly skewed by the authors' perspective that beach access should be plentiful and free for all residents and vistors of the state, who don't have the financial wherewithal to afford a beachside retreat or lodgings. There's even a sidebar about riparian rights. Fascinating stuff. But I digress.Do expect to read harsh words about those beach towns which provide little in the way of public beach access, such as Longboat Key. Overall, highy recommended, whether you plan to visit or already reside here. I'm a lifelong Floridian and found this to be an entertaining and informative guide for my last beach vacation.A quibble: this edition is the most recent available, but the information on hotels and some restaurants is dated. Use this book in concert with another planning guide for an extended stay (recent versions of Fodors, Frommers, etc.) I plan to buy the 3rd edition when it's published.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderfully interesting.......2005-10-17
In 1962, a crew of nine intrepid men set sail from Spain in a replica of Christopher Columbus's smallest ship, the caravel Santa Clara, known affectionately as the Niña. Expecting to recreate Columbus's easy trip from the Canary Islands to the far side of the Atlantic, the nine set out on their voyage. This is their story, a story of rancid food, spoiled water, storms, sharks, and ferociously boring (and frustrating) doldrums.
I was quite delighted to find this book. In fact, I once visited this Niña II, and actually met the author. The book is wonderfully interesting. I must admit that they were quite heroic to have put up with everything that they did.
Overall, I found this to be an interesting book. If you like stories of aquatic adventure, then this is the book for you!

Customer Reviews:
A Great Help!.......2006-07-11
This book is incredibly useful. It tells you everything you need to know and is well illustrated. It shows a close up of the plant and a view of the entire plant. But the best thing is that the pages are split three ways according to the plant's height. So you can mix and match pages to see how different height plants work together. It also has all the information about plants, sun, water, propagation, etc. I recommend this book highly to anyone landscaping in Texas and many of the plants work in other states as well.
Unique, creative, and fun.......2004-02-10
High marks for creativity, uniqueness and just plain fun. The book is spiral bound so it will lay flat. This makes it easy to use. More importantly each page has been divided horizontally into three independent sections. The flowers on the top section of the divided page are tall with a height range of 3-6 foot. The flowers in the middle section of the divided page are in the medium height range of 1-3 feet. The flowers on the bottom third of the divided page are of a low height ranging from 1 inch to 1 foot. So by choosing different top, middle and bottom sections you can get an idea of how the staggered heights of the flowers in your bed would appear simultaneously. By flipping back and forth between different choices for the top, middle, and bottom sections (which move independently of one another because of the division into three seperate sections) you can compare various color, height, and texture combinations. Alternatively use it to compare flowers that bloom in the cool season, those that bloom in the warm season, and those that bloom year round and get an idea of how your bed will appear over time as the seasons change.
There are 138 tall, 138 medium and 138 short flowering plants illustrated. Happily this is unique entries, that is, there is not 20 separate entries for tulips. So you are being introduced to many lesser-known varieties of flowering plants for Texas.
The general information is printed on a soothing happy shade of yellow paper. The wording is informative without being dry.
I am not awarding 5 stars for two reasons. First the illustrations are hand painted. While it is great that there is a close up of the bloom, as well as an illustration of the entire plant, this is not as informative as an actual photograph. Secondly because of the split page structure there is only a single paragraph for each plant listing. This leaves out some important information, such as pest problems (I see that disease problems are mentioned.)
I recommend this book for its fun factor. It would make a great gift for any Texas gardener. Give it a try!
The Texas Flowerscaper.......2001-03-19
I have lived in Texas for 15 years, this is a must have selection for your garden. The Texas flowerscaper gives you great references as well as care for each plant. Also many tips about which plants need alot of water for each region. Excellent book!!

Book Description
Two classic plays translated by a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet into English verse. In The Misanthrope, society itself is indicted and the impurity of its critic’s motives is exposed. In Tartuffe, the bigoted and prudish Orgon falls completely under the power of the wily Tartuffe. Introductions by Richard Wilbur.
Customer Reviews:
A CLASSIC!.......2007-03-22
Many people are turned off by the rhyming nature of Tartuffe. Personally I find myself so enthralled with the story that I often fail to notice that the story itself rhymes. Real belly laughs abound as we watch Orgon blindly walk through life, oblivious to the religious-hypocrite's misdeeds. It's an absurd story, but it's meant to be thus. It does miss something if you don't see it performed live but once you have, when you read it as it is presented here, you manage to get full enjoyment!
The Misanthrope exists in much the same credit. This work centers on the protagonist Alceste, whose wholesale rejection of his culture's polite social conventions make him tremendously unpopular. This manifests itself in the primary conflict of the play, which results from Alceste's refusal to compliment a sonnet by Oronte, a character who lacks Alceste's respect for unabashed sincerity.
I'm not as big a fan of The Misanthrope as of Tartuffe but I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was very happy to be exposed to the text this way. This is an excellent rendering.
The misanthrope and the religious hypocrite .......2005-01-20
Moliere's leading characters often have one major negative trait which dictates their behavior throughout the play. In this they often seem to be mechanical stock characters and not flesh- and - blood living human beings. In 'The Misanthrope' Alceste believes he must tell the truth to everyone he sees. This is despite the advice of his best friend Philinte. Alceste alienates everyone. At the same time he is madly in love with with Celimene. He wants her to go away with him to retreat from hypocritical society. She however flirtatious and light - minded prefers society to him. The play closes with Philinte trying to persuade Alceste not to leave society completely.
In the second play in this volume the leading character is a religious hypocrite. He finds his way into the heart and mind of a wealthy gentleman Orgon and dominates his family life. Tartuffe steals his money , leads Orgon to disinherit his son and offer his daughter to Tartuffe in marriage. Tartuffe attempts to seduce Orgon's wife. Orgon is convinced to hide under a table where he overhears Tartuffe's entreaties. Orgon then decides to eject him from the family but cannot. It is only with the intercession of the king that the religious hypocrite is stopped. This play raised a furor in its day and the Church opposed its production. Moliere's patron Louis XIV allowed its production in private but only after five years allowed its public staging.
In both these plays Moliere viciously satires the human propensity to remain fixed and static in one's own character, and reaction to reality. He derides human folly but always with the redeeming grace of laughter.
For the contemporary reader of the work who does not feel the special force of the work in its original language there often may seem something forced and artificial in the work. Moliere's work it seems to me gain much from being staged and to know them truly reading alone is not enough.
"Sincerity in excess / Can get you into a very pretty mess".......2003-06-20
Here they are. The Misanthrope and Tartuffe, arguably Moliere's two most famous plays, translated by Pulizter Prize-winner Richard Wilbur, the crown jewels of his poetic output. These translations are performed all the time, and have proved themselves on the modern stage. But the effect of them is not lessened by reading, as this bookshelf-ready edition shows. They are packed with hilarious observations about the pretentions in us all.
The Misanthrope is about a man who tells the harshest truth to everyone but himself; Tartuffe about hypocricy in religion. They read fast and funny, the rhyming couplets of the original faithfully reproduced. The language seems so natural and witty that you think perhaps these plays weren't written in the seventeenth century. But they were, this species of farce being extinct these days, except in rare places like The Simpsons. I can not only unhesitatingly recommend these, but also all of Wilbur's translations of Moliere. It is rare for a comic author to get such a seriously worthy treatment. Hooray!
Brilliant Balletic Comedy & Translation.......2001-08-12
In both these plays, Wilbur brings Moliere's true genius to real life. Previous translations of Moliere's work pale by comparison to Wilbur's brilliant translations. It was my feeling, that would Moliere by alive today, and writing in American English, he would write the way Wilbur translated it.
In comparison to prose translations in the past, Wilbur, past US Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner, truly gives the reader the real feeling of Moliere's "Balletic Comedy" style, as Moliere used his poetry and comedy to make complex and serious points about life of "regular" people, as opposed to royalty such as Shakespeare concentrated on, and so many other playwrites of the past.
In reading Wilbur's translations, one can virtually imagine the cast prancing and mincing across the stage as they humorously render these rhyming couplets at each other, and the audience. The true genius of both Moliere and Wilbur is illustrated most profoundly and strikingly in these translations. Any true lover of Moliere, and even those who have never read him before, should treat themselves to Wilbur's translations for a Moliere experience, that is unparalleled in any other versions previously published.
500 years old and laugh-out-loud funny.......2000-09-23
It is amazing that a 500 year old rhyming play can be laugh-out-loud funny. Celimene is surely one of the most sharp tounged, wittiest feminine roles in the theater. I saw the very long legged Umma Thurman perform a modern adaption of this play off broadway. Tartuffe is also good but it does not rhyme. Neither does Moilière's "Don Juan".

One-Act Comedies of Moliere: Seven Plays (Actor's Moliere, Vol 4) (Actor's Moliere, Vol 4)
ASIN: 0192833413 |
Book Description
'Why does he write those ghastly plays that the whole of Paris flocks to see? And why does he paint such lifelike portraits that everyone recognizes themselves?' Moliere, The Impromptu at Versailles This volume brings together four of Moliere's greatest verse comedies covering the best years of his prolific writing career. Actor, director, and playwright, Moliere (1622-73) was one of the finest and most influential French dramatists, adept at portraying human foibles and puncturing pomposity. The School for Wives was his first great success; Tartuffe, condemned and banned for five years, his most controversial play. The Misanthrope is his acknowledged masterpiece, and The Clever Women his last, and perhaps best-constructed, verse piece. In addition this collection includes a spirited attack on his enemies and a defence of his theatre, in the form of two sparkling short plays, The School for Wives Criticized and The Impromptu at Versailles. Moliere's prose plays are available in a complementary Oxford World's Classics edition, Don Juan and Other Plays.

Amusing.......2007-05-23
The book contains two of Moliere's best known works, "Tartuffe" (about a religious hypocrite) and "The Misanthrope." Clever and incisive, these works provoke commentary and poke fun at human qualities that everyone can relate to. Well worth reading for its humor and social commentary.

Understanding the Neoclassical Comedies of Moliere.......2001-05-12
This Cliffs Notes volume by Denis M. Calandra and James L. Roberts examines three Neoclassical comedies by Moliere. The volume begins with a section on the Life and Background of the author and an excellent section that distinguishes "Neoclassical Comedy" of Moliere from the "Romantic Comedy" epitomized by Shakespeare. Following a concise explication of Moliere's Comic Technique, Calandra and Roberts look at "Tartuffe," "The Misanthrope" and "The Bourgeois Gentleman." Each play is examined with a List of Characters, a General Plot Summary, Summaries and Commentaries that look at each of the five acts in turn looking at one or two scenes at a time, and then Character Analyses of the main characters. As always, the best way of making use of this little yellow book with the black stripes is to read the commentaries after you have read the corresponding scenes in the play. The greatest strength of this particular Cliffs Notes is the set up of Neoclassical Comedy and Moliere's comic technique. For those teaching/reading these plays that background information will allow better understanding of any one of these plays.

Book Description
When you come from a mixed race background as Paisley Rekdal does — her mother is Chinese American and her father is Norwegian– thorny issues of identity politics, and interracial desire are never far from the surface. Here in this hypnotic blend of personal essay and travelogue, Rekdal journeys throughout Asia to explore her place in a world where one’s “appearance is the deciding factor of one’s ethnicity.”
In her soul-searching voyage, she teaches English in South Korea where her native colleagues call her a “hermaphrodite,” and is dismissed by her host family in Japan as an American despite her assertion of being half-Chinese. A visit to Taipei with her mother, who doesn’t know the dialect, leads to the bitter realization that they are only tourists, which makes her further question her identity. Written with remarkable insight and clarity, Rekdal a poet whose fierce lyricism is apparent on every page, demonstrates that the shifting frames of identity can be as tricky as they are exhilarating.
Customer Reviews:
Complex issues, disturbing insights, but very readable.......2001-05-05
There are always stereotypes to be stripped down, aren't there?
Rekdal's themes (race, how Americans are perceived overseas, how Americans perceive each other) make you think, but her writing won't make you struggle. Her essays, built around episodes of her life, are sad, funny, entertaining and insightful.
An excellent book. Highly recommended. I wish I could teach a course called "Race in America" just so I could get more people to read this book.
A Book Well-Worth Reading.......2001-01-15
Ms. Rekdal's numerous observations are personal and touching. Many Americans have struggled with an identity crisis. I understand fully the crushing power of long and brutal silences mentioned in the text. I am so glad that Ms. Rekdal is not silent at all.
captivating.......2001-01-13
i am so happy to have stumbled upon this book. This author is so intelligent, observant, witty and creative. This book was charming and relatable. i laughed aloud as some of my own personal experiences were so similar, it was amazing. Rekdal is able to put into words feelings that i hadn't been able to describe. Even if one hasn't had cultural identity questions about him/herself this book is enjoyable and some sentences read almost like poetry. Her stories are very insightful and she captures the essence of how people think and react.
A wonderful book.......2000-10-26
Well, you have BOTH Ha Jin AND Arthur Golden praising it on the back cover--what can you expect? (I like one and not the other). While the cover made me think that this was going to be a "wacky," irreverent account by a young, half-Chinese woman, the book is instead an extremely well-written, thought-provoking colletion of essays on ethnicity and identity. Rekdal is a poet, and it shows in her evocative descriptions, in her lyrical passages, in an effortlessly beautiful line rendered for the reader's benefit. Grappling with the vexatious issue of personal identity, Rekdal comes up with great insight and meaning into the problem without being narcisstic or excessively introspective; the book succeeds brilliantly wihtout offering any simple, pat conclusions. Though the essay's topics are somewhat disjointed--they go from America to Korea to China to childhood, etc--the disconnected structure seems to be part of the point: as the subtitle suggests, these are "observations of not fitting in." I liked her juxtaposition of the uncanny, the frustrating, the disappointing things along with the beautiful, the personal, the "mini-epiphanic" aspects.
And yes, she is also very witty. The humor is very sharp. I found myself laughing hysterically at an Elvis reference and I normally don't find him amusing. Finally, as someone who also spent a year teaching high school students in a small city in Korea, I was delighted and amazed to read about experiences that I related to. I'm grateful for that alone, but it's a great book in all other aspect as well.
