Disappointing photos.......2006-10-31
With half of each page dedicated to a photograph of the species, there should be no excuse for not providing an excellent, high quality photograph. Most of the photographs are grainy and washed out. Several photographs lack depth of field needed to key in on leaf or flower characteristics. There are better south Texas guides out there.
OK.......2003-12-01
This guide book devotes a page to each species treated, with half the page taken up by a color picture of a flowering or fruiting specimen of the species in question. On the same page some data are given. Arranged by family (look for Leguminosae under Fabaceae, Buddleja under Loganiaceae, etc). Picture quality varies from pretty decent to quite good, although it is noticeable that a curious grid tends to be visible in the background (a digital camera?). Some pictures are a little overexposed. Occasionally the composition could be better (sometimes a lot better). Text seems unremarkable, but the choice to include author citations in the botanical names has not been followed up by doing this properly (needs a lot of work). Synonyms are provided. The "Trees" in the title should be taken to include a palm; the "Shrubs" is meant in the widest possible sense (including subshrubs and smaller stuff) and this goes for "Cacti" too (= "succulents"). Printing quality is just short of excellent. All in all this is OK, but unremarkable.

Too Bad Rick Steves Doesn't go This Far South.......2004-07-06
Yes, as other reviewers write, Ellen Grady's book is full of rich and detailed history of the places you'll visit, but it lacks essential practical information. We used it only for Taormina (beautiful town, highly recommended) and Catania (Sicily's second largest city, which you could skip), so the book may be more helpful elsewhere on the island. As for these two destinations, the book lacked essential information (like the frequency and cost of various public transportation options between towns). Also, it had virtually no narrative description of restaurants, just a mere listing. If I wanted history, I would have bought a history book. I wanted practical information to get the best out of our short time on the island, this book didn't have it.
Paradise on Earth: SICILY seen by Ellen Grady.......2003-11-28
And wonderfully described and brought forward in an uncanny, friendly and witty manner. Nothing is left to question, only see, explore and enjoy for yourself! Wonderful Hotel, B&B, Restaurant, Beach listing!! Siteseeing tour needs no other guide book!!
Earthly paradise.......2003-11-22
This new edition of the classic Blue Guide Sicily is packed with information, not only about cities and places to see, how to get there and so on, but also lots of hotels, B&Bs, farm accommodation, and the best places to eat! (Which doesn't mean the most expensive). Sicily is so different compared with any other place in the world that it can seem intimidating at first; everybody seems to shout instead of talk, traffic whizzes around, yet Ellen Grady takes you by the hand and helps you relax and enjoy, appreciating all the wonderful things about Sicily that make this island unique, a true earthly paradise. I love Sicily thanks to her, and I just can't wait for her next book!
Perfect book for the traveler that likes detail and history........2001-02-17
Comprehensive and detailed book that covers it all. Drawings of the greek temples of Agrigento, Selinute and Segesta. Maps of what the sites would have looked like. Explanations of the dozens of layers of history and conquest that is Sicily's legacy. 319 pages of well layed out information in a region by region basis. Good overview of transporation options and how to get to the more remote sites. Minimal hotel information. Good color map section in the back. Did not need to buy the local english guides with this one along on the trip.
Perfect book for the in-depth traveler!.......2001-02-17
Comprehensive and detailed this 319 page book covers it all. Sicily is a gold mine of history and with this book you can follow along at the most involved historic site. We used it during all 14 days we spent in Sicily and found that we did not need to buy the english site guides while there. A lot of drawings that show how the greek sites would have been layed out and the structure of the temples. Of great use in Segesta, Selinute and Agrigento historic sites. Highly recommend for the traveler that likes detail!

Customer Reviews:
I much admire Harriet Rochlin's latest work..........1998-10-01
"I much admire Harriet Rochlin's latest work, The First Lady of Dos Cacahuates. Freida and Bennie are as engaging a couple as one could meet in the pages of an historical novel; and Ms. Rochlin's command of her research--in the interest of fiction--is not only impeccable, but sensitive as well. The portrayal of Jews in this western setting could become either stereotype or caricature, but Rochlin invests her narrative, her people, and their lives with fully dimensioned frshness and energy."

Book Description
The monastic ideal is a complete renunciation of the world, and involves an inner struggle necessary for the soul's ascent towards God. Those who have been most faithful to this ideal have been the desert dwellers--hidden away from the seductive tumult of the world.
In the first half of the 19th century, the Russian land was rich in dense woods and forests in which the sound of the axe was rarely heard. In these dark forest preserves--in the mysterious silent depths of dense green thickets--it was not only wild animals who lived but many desert dwellers also made their dugout dwellings in the earth. There they performed secret ascetic labors known only to the One to Whom they had dedicated themselves in their hidden and deliberately buried life.
MARIA OF OLONETS offers an extraordinary account of one woman's solitary struggle. Maria's life is a witness to the reality of Christ's otherworldly Kingdom.

Book Description
Arizona Territory, 1886-1887: When her visiting kid sister is abducted, Frieda, blaming herself, abandons her husband and children to search for her. On her own in a scruffy hotel, three jails, a makeshift law office, a Jewish-owned inn, two boisterous courtrooms, and at a melodramatic execution, Frieda learns where and with whom she belongs.
Customer Reviews:
A Fine achievement.......2001-07-09
Harriet Rochlin has given us a gift: three stories about feisty Freida Goldson and her ambitious husband, Benny, as they settle and struggle in Arizona during the 1880s. Readers of Rachel Calof's story by Jacob Calof and the Diary of Mattie Spencer by Sandra Dallas will be equally intrigued by Rochlin's Desert Dwellers Trilogy. On Her Way Home can stand on its own, but to really appreciate Frieda's strength--and Rochlin's achievement-- read The Reformer's Apprentice and The First Lady of Dos Cacahuantes in sequence. The stories are wonderful for book clubs, for readers who like historical fiction, and for anyone who appreciates how much women had to overcome to reach their present equality. Frieda is Jewish so her story reveals little known information about the Jewish experience in the West. Rochlin's research is outstanding.
A Wonderful Rollicking Read.......2001-06-10
"On Her Way Home," the third novel in the Desert Dweller's Trilogy, deomonstrates Harriet Rochlin's uncanny ability to enter the hearts and minds of her 1880s characters. A wonderful, rollicking read, the book is as contemporary in its psychological insights as it is historically accurate. I highly recommend this book to all those interested in reading a good story about interesting people living in a vivid, vital slice of time.
A fascinating story.......2001-06-07
This fascinating story gives us a dark view of pioneer life in the form of the criminal justice system and its distructive effect on women who are caught up in it. Women do not count. Unless the woman is Frieda Goldson whose ferocious will takes her far from home to the side of her abducted and abused younger sister. When the girl is falsely jailed for murder Frieda pits herself against a primitive justice system that shows little mercy. Author Harriet Rochlin once again gives us the experience, superbly rich in the details of sight, sounds, taste and smells, of living in an earlier, harsher time. Excellent writing.
A unique writer.......2001-05-07
This is a book with the marvelous flavor and texture of the 1880's Arizona Territory--a mix of not only the pleasure of cooking and good food but the ethnic stew of the place and time. The plot: Frieda, the leading character, is a flawed but admirable woman of passionate loyalties and a sense of mission that pushes her on a dangerous and self-sacrificing quest to save her younger sister. The characters are special, with perils aplenty. There is a point at which the book really catches fire and races ahead excitingingly, and I finished it at a gallop. Ms.Rochlin's writing is a gift not only to anyone interested in the Old West as it really was, but to anyone who appreciates the ring of an honest voice in fiction.
Third in the Desert Dwellers Trilogy.......2001-05-04
I just finished it-sadly-because there were no more pages to turn. It's wonderful. The characters are true-I really cared about them - not so easy to do in some novels. What strength and courage those pioneers had! I don't think that I would have been able to survive such conditions. Also - what deeply impresses me was the love Frieda had for Ida - what sisters should and rarely do, feel for one another.

A must have!.......2001-08-22
This book is great and a MUST HAVE for serious and casual or would be collectors of Candy Containers. I have been collecting glass Candy Containers for many years and have just begun collecting the plastic containers. This is the BEST book on the subject. It is well organized and provides just enough background on the history of candy containers. It must have taken thousands of hours to compile such an extensive list and take all those pictures... Such great detail! The price evaluations are surprisingly accurate. Even though there is a disclaimer that value is what it is worth to you and the hobby is ment for fun. What a book. I bought 6 of 'em for gifts.
First Book on mostly plastic candy containers!.......2001-06-24
I'm so happy a book finally came out on this, not so old, collecting of plastic candy containers. I can now see so many that I do not have, that will make the "hunting" so much more exciting. The book title says it all, "Modern Candy Containers & novelties", because there are few older ones listed. All in all, I think this is a great book and do recommend it to any one that enjoys collecting fun "stuff"!

Modern Candy Containers & Novelties: Identification & Value Guide
ASIN: 0764314823 |
Book Description
In an effort to attract children to their products, manufacturers of candy have used a host of gimmicks and promotions. With everything from baseball cards to Cracker Jack*r toys and premiums, they sought to bring their little customers back again and again. One of the more enduring strategies was the packaging itself. Over a hundred years ago manufacturers began putting their candy in novelty containers that would be cherished long after the candy was gone. These range from fancy lithographed cardboard boxes to glass figural containers, and include containers in plastic, celluloid, paper mache, tin, and fabric. From the earliest glass jars to the latest Pez or M&M dispensers, collectors are anxious to find candy containers with snappy slogans and innovative packaging. In this wonderful book, nearly 400 containers are shown, with color photos, descriptions, and pricing. It covers the whole range of containers, including some of the earliest, with a focus on the highly collectible area of plastic. This book is guaranteed to whet your appetite.

Book Description
Plant identification employs an extensive and complex terminology. Professional botanists often need several years in the field to master this terminology, and it presents a daunting obstacle to the student of botany.
The meaning of most botanical terms, however, is immediately apparent when an illustration is available. That is the purpose of this volume. Plant Identification Terminology provides over nineteen hundred clear illustrations of terms used in plant identification keys and descriptions. Customer Reviews:
Photography and the myths of the American west.......2004-04-14
"Print the Legend" is an insightful study of the co-development of photography and the image of the American west. Sandweiss begins by discussing the limited uses of daguerrotypes as intermediaries for other forms of visual information in the context of the Mexican-American war and the unfolding western landscape. She goes on to show that as the technology of wet-plate photography developed, so did the direct use of supposedly objective photographs in building the mythology of the western United States. The chapter on photography and representations of American Indians was particularly strong and nuanced.
"Print the Legend" is recommended for anyone with an interest in early photography or western American history. But above all, I found it to be a deep examination of photography and photographic representation.
How the West was Spun.......2003-04-17
Heroic cowboys and savage Indians. Homes on the cozy range. Gold for the taking in them thar hills. Print the Legend shows how the first photos of the American West were cropped and captioned to embellish the stories and myths that drew the pioneers westward. Few historians write this gracefully, and Sandweiss's prize-winning scholarship is free from pedantic distractions. The engrossing section on photography and the American Indian is worth the price of this handsome. deliciously intelligent book.
