Good easy read.......2007-03-17
If you have an hour or two to kill and you are unsure what being a Bridesmaid entails then this is a very useful book. It is a very easy read. The author keeps everything upbeat and postive and offers advice for crazy situations. I borrowed this book from my sister who was the Maid of Honor at my wedding she found the book a little dull because it says some stuff that is so basic it is almost a given people know it.(ie buy a gift for the Bride and Groom) But I found it helpful to read as a Bride so you have a better understanding of what worries the Bridemaids. All and all a useful book.
Useful on many levels.......2004-11-05
This is a great book for someone who's never been a bridesmaid before (like me). There were a lot of practical hints about what kinds of events you'll need to set up and attend and how much you may end up spending and so on. I do have the occasional quarrel -- Ms. Rung says being pregnant is not an acceptable excuse for bowing out of a wedding party, which I completely disagree with, and I also thought her estimates on what a bridesmaids' dress and accoutrements might cost were frequently low -- but overall, this book is an easy read and often funny too. There is also a lot of repetition, which is probably geared towards those who are only going to read a few chapters.
The nice thing about this book was the reminder that no matter what, you are there to support the bride! I bet this is a point that a lot of people can easily forget in the hoopla surrounding any wedding.

What To Do Before "I DO"
Along with helping you plan out each aspect of your wedding, from buying your engagement ring to making the honeymoon reservations, The Everything Wedding Book also explains how to alleviate a lot of the pressure and many of the hassles by using some simple advanced planning. But if all you want to know is where to have your wedding, what to wear, who should take your pictures, and how to resolve all other practical issues, there's plenty of that kind of stuff in here, too.
You will find everything you need in , The Everything Wedding Book. You will find answers to the questions of who (to talk to), what (to say and do), when (to do it), and how to handle (budgeting, styling, scheduling, etc.) and anything else you may need to know to plan your perfect wedding. The year-long calendar will help you map out an overall strategic time plan, and keep track of appointments, fittings, and payment deadlines. Keep this book handy and you'll have everything covered.

The book stinks.......2007-04-05
This book stinks--literally!!!!! The book is good for planning a wedding but it smelled so bad I couldn't read it. IT smelled like stale cigarette smoke and must. It made me sick to read it. It should have been disclosed that the book had a stench to it.
I was so looking forward to passing it on to my future sister in law but I had to throw it away because it smelled so bad.
Please warn buyers of the condition of books being purchased.
Eh.......2005-08-16
Not terrible, but not the easiest read and a tad difficult to follow along with. Seemed to go out of order or jump around a lot. I would recommend the Unofficial Guide to Planning your Wedding or The Dummies Guide. Or better yet, do what I did and check them all out from the library first, and THEN decide which one to buy
A must have for all Brides to be!.......2005-08-04
I don't know what I would have done without this book! It told me so many things I didn't know. I only have 2 friends that are married so I am new to all this wedding stuff and this book definately pointed my in the right direction. I even recommended it to someone else that is getting married! Get this book.
Offensive and contradictory.......2004-10-24
I'm going to run out of room if I say everything I want to about this book. Suffice it to say that much of its advice is straight out of the Fifties (including all the stuff about your dad getting his Heart Broken because his Little Girl is All Grown Up Now....barf). Also, one page says that invitations should never be addressed "and family," and then about 100 pages later there's a sample invitation addressed to "so-and-so and family." This is what happens when 3 people write a book.
Nothing Special.......2003-09-30
I bought this book off of the used section of Amazon.com, and boy am I glad I did. I would have been furious if I had paid full price for this book. This book does not have any information or worksheets in it that you couldn't gather from wedding magazines or off of the many different wedding websites. The only benefit that I can see is that all the information is in one place - but personally, I'd rather get it for free and assemble the information into a binder of my own. My advice - either buy the book at a discounted price, or skip it all together and invest some time surfing the web or a few magazines.

Book Description
Berlin-based artist Olaf Nicolai focusses on the perfect combination of high-art, pop and visual design. The book is based on his first personal exhibition at the well known Migros Museum for contemporary Art (Zurich/Switzerland), but this is not a classic documentational catalogue: designed by young Swiss studio Norm and accompanied by compositions of established German electronic band To Rococo Rot, this artist book represents well-rounded cohesion, perfectly exemplifying Nicolai's foremost production principle - the visual and musical reflection of quoted content.
Book Description
The second edition of this comforting anecdotal book addresses issues of health, finances, living arrangements, communication, and emotional struggles. It includes new chapters on baby boomers, family dynamics, and resources.
Book Description
For decades, bookstore childcare sections were dominated by books for women that is, until Quirk's Baby Owner's Manual offered a fun and refreshing alternative for male readers. Getting Engaged (popping the question, finding a ring)

Good book.......2007-07-28
I got this book to go along with another one to aide me in studying for an equine massage therapy course I'm about to take. This book not only has fantastic discriptions of exactly why a certain muscle is so important, but also has some really good illustrations and basically breaks down a certain joint and/or muscle in a mechanical way to really show how they work together. Great book and very decent price.
For the horse owner!.......2003-12-16
This book is of value for the horse owner or enthusiast to gain an understanding of the mechanics of movement for the horse. It will help those who may have concerns that could be answered with this knowledge. It is of limited use for an artist looking for good muscle in motion illustrations. If you are an artist looking for more information on this subject and you have already aquired adequate reference material you may want to add this to your collection but the price is a bit high for that purpose. If you own a horse and want to understand what is going on with the mechanics in movement this book may very well be worth the price.

Interesting, colorfull, but not really needed by any serious or longtime USA collector. Maybe the novice USA collector will find this "entertaining", but you could certainly put the money you will spend on this book to better use "buying stamps", etc. It wouldn't surprise me if Scott subsidizes the printing of this book through their high retail prices for their yearly catalogues.
Book Description
Ezra Haggard, author of the popular Perennials for the Lower Midwest (1996), literally takes landscape design to a higher level with this gorgeous book especially for Midwesterners. Trees and shrubs add mass and the all-important vertical element to a garden. If well chosen, they also contribute beauty, texture, and color all year long and for years to come, beautifying the home and adding to its value, screening out unattractive elements, providing privacy, and getting better as they get older.

Sentiment at its funniest........2003-10-26
This story will awaken many feelings & many memories. It explores one of the most complex relationships we have, with our mothers, with humor, love, joy, regret, nostalgia and longing. Very touching.
Is there any limit to Tremblay's genius?.......1999-10-21
Another brilliant success from Tremblay.. He makes us care profoundly about his own history and family, bringing us into his world completely. I continue to marvel at his skill in confounding time without confusing his audience. His humor is as profound and entertaining as ever, his insight touching and relevant, and the staging he builds into this play... two characters, one seated until the very end and then a sensational and spectacular ending that is impossible to read without laughter and tears and must be a thrilling experience to see on stage. Amazing connections and linkages with his previous work.
Humourous and Touching, but difficult to perform........1999-09-17
I picked up this play because I really liked the title. I really enjoyed reading the play. At a few points I was laughing uncontrollably, but at others I was unable to grasp the concept at what I should be laughing about. Take into account that I only read this play last night, and it was my first read at it. I think that this one would be difficult from my point of view as a director because the Narrator (one of the two chars) never leaves his chair until the end. It would be difficult for me to keep things interesting, but It would be a nice challenge to be able to pull it off. I, as an actor, would love to be able to pull off learning one of Nana's HUGE monologues, but since I am not even close to the age of that character I won't bother for now. I think that it is a wonderful play which has a lot of hidden meaning in it, and I am planning on reading it again this weekend so I can discover more. Thanks Michel.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan: A Novel
ASIN: 0525942572 |
Amazon.com
The Chinese this century have endured traumas inconceivable to modern Western generations. Beyond the Narrow Gate is the story of four girls who fled extreme violence, privation, and the Communist Red Army in 1948. Author Leslie Chang hoped to uncover the family history that her mother, one of the girls, was unwilling to talk about and learn her own identity in the process. The gulf between their experiences is profound. As Chang says of her orphaned mother, "At thirteen, she had learned to expect only the worst from life; at thirteen, I thought the greatest tragedy was losing a contact lens." Chang's tale weaves together several themes: her mother's passage from Chinese student to American housewife; the varied experiences of three friends her mother made at an elite girls' school in Taiwan; the mother-daughter relationship; and growing up in an alien culture.
Chang brings great empathy, passion, and descriptive elegance to this important book about the contemporary immigrant experience, exploring territory opened up to us by Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club and Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior. When the book ends with mother and daughter celebrating Chinese New Year in Taiwan, we share in the understanding that enables them to sit quietly with the ancient aunt who took advantage of the mother when she was a defenseless teenager. For the first time, Chinese celebrations hold meaning for Leslie Chang. --John Stevenson
Book Description
An epic of four Chinese women and their journey from East to West. When the Communists took over mainland China, among the many that were forced to flee their homeland were four remarkable women. Arriving in Taiwan in 1948, Dolores, Suzanne, Margaret, and Mary met at the elite First Girls School, the "narrow gate" where a lucky few could become eligible for U.S. visas. In this refuge, their characters were built, their friendships were formed, and their eyes were focused on the future--a life in America, where their paths would diverge dramatically. But this group portrait does not end once the women reach America. Beyond the Narrow Gate chronicles the struggles and hardships the women faced in their new country and breaks new ground by taking readers outside of Chinatown into diverse communities and families, effectively re-drawing the map of Asian America. The daughter of one of her subjects, journalist Leslie Chang weaves her own personal story as a second-generation Chinese American into her narrative, illuminating generational differences and conflicts. She unflinchingly examines the experience of feeling like a stranger in both the white and Chinese communities, the constraints of parental expectations, and the complexity of interracial relationships. Impeccably researched, beautifully written, Beyond the Narrow Gate is an unforgettable epic of American immigration, a true story as riveting as any novel.
Customer Reviews:
Mediocre.......2003-10-19
This is not a terrible book. But it's not a good one either--especially in a field that has so many extraordinarily well-written memoirs (like "Wild Swans").
"Beyond the Narrow Gate"'s lack of originality and style are its biggest problems. The author is telling a story that has been told many times before. Although Chang's women immigrants are better-off financially than the immigrants most memoirs are about, that fact actually makes "Narrow Gate" LESS interesting, because the women's hardships are less stark, more psychological than physical, and thus extremely difficult for Change to adequately convey.
Chang's writing style is unexceptional. Her words do not draw the reader in, and there is a lack of complementarity between the story Chang is trying to tell and the words she uses to tell it with. Her language could be much richer, her descriptions more textured (adjectival phrases are our friends!). Worse, this story, of which the personal impact for the author is constantly reiterated, is not told in an intimate manner or with any sense of humor whatsoever. The telling is extremely straightforward, with too few embellishments and too little intimacy, which is off-putting, to say the least.
There are also some smaller, but similarly irritating problems. First, this book touts itself as a record of four Chinese women's journey to America. In fact, that story is recounted as a background for excessive odes to Chang's mother that are not related to the story. There are frequent and redundant discussions of Chang's mother's exuberance in life, complete with unnecessary anecdotes that are neither contributory nor all that interesting.
Also, especially in the first half of the book, Chang goes into long tangents about poets, such as the rather obscure Wallace Stevens, or earlier American authors. She tries to weave their experiences into the story of the Chinese immigrants' experiences--to what end, I have no clue. The device merely irritated me.
Chang jumps between spaces, time, and characters in a wholly disconcerting manner. It's never made clear why certain characters, like Suzanne and Delores, feature heavily in some chapters and not others, since the book is not written in a consistent chronology. Chang also throws in a lot about herself as she was doing the research for the book--half of one chapter is devoted to a visit to an old priest in New York, who doesn't even remember Chang's mother. For a book that's supposed to be about the elder Chang's immigration experience, there is an excess of anecdotes about the author's research-related experiences.
Last, Chang's insistence on writing out the character's exact words, no matter how broken their English, is annoying. Most children of immigrants, while acknowledging that their parents' English is nonstandard, have grown up hearing that version of English and therefore it sounds natural to them, and not broken. Therefore, Chang could still be true to her subjects by recording their speech as standard English, because that's how their children actually understand them. The broken English is very hard to read and takes away from the seriousness both of Chang's subject and often of the conversations that are being recorded.
Overall, like I said, this isn't a TERRIBLE book. If it dealt with a topic that had fewer volumes already written on it--say, for example, the Thai or Hmong immigrant experience--I would actually give this book another star. But the Chinese immigrant experience is one that has already been recorded in some of the best tomes of this century, and so I don't think readers should waste their time with as mediocre a book as "Beyond the Narrow Gate."
thoughtful and well-written.......2003-01-01
Ever since the Joy Luck Club came out, it seems like "Asian heritage" books have been everywhere. I can't get into many of them - not entirely sure why - but this book is one of the exceptions.
This story rings very true for me. My mother went to the Taipei high school where the four main characters meet, and this is what first drew me to the book. It was like finding out about her life though I'd never been able to ask the right questions (a process described early in the narrative, too). And I can see parts of my growing up reflected in most of the second-generation characters.
But I like this book mainly for its wisdom, for the perspective Chang has gained through the process of writing these stories and how she shares that with the reader. It reminds me about the freedom we have here, to define our dreams however we want and do all we can to pursue them. (We're not forced to study biochemistry just because we're good students, and our culture helps give us the courage to change careers if we're not satisfied.) It's also interesting to see how the parents' experiences affect their children's lives in this area. Wei goes to New York to be a dancer, and Peter tries to pursue public policy instead of medical school. There's a line about a father who was so American that he encouraged his child "to go to Oberlin instead of Harvard" - perfectly characterized, I thought.
I thought this book was nicely written, other than the occasional awkward foreshadowing. The stories do jump around, but this is inevitable, and they are described clearly enough that they really aren't too hard to follow.
This is a relatively quick read, and definitely worth it - it paints an accurate picture of both generations' lives in the U.S. and throws in a nice China/Taiwan history lesson as well. It's definitely among my favorite "Chinese" books now, along with Mona in the Promised Land (Gish Jen) and Legacies (Bette Bao Lord).
An interesting perspective.......2001-05-01
A daughter researches the life of her mother through the eyes of her mothers friends.
Beautifully Written.......2000-11-22
A fascinating story of 3 generations of Chinese/Taiwanese women. Chen beautifully paints a contrast between the older generation and her young self on a personal journey to discover her roots. What makes this book so wonderful is that Chen not only tells of the difficult journey from Taiwan to America but also the battle of thoughts and emotions that take place in their hearts.
Poorly written but it was helpful.......2000-05-20
Unfortunately this book was written very poorly. Author swings from one end to another trying to catch a big fish. However she is a good observer and takes you into the complicated relations of four women with their families. She described well each woman during different time periods of their life in China, Taiwan, and USA. Unfortunately, this book consists of many small stories of each of them. There is no main story. However I found it helpful as well.
