This new monograph documents the work of international master of design Achille Castiglioni. During his half-century career, Castiglioni has designed over 150 objects, including lamps, stools, bookshelves, electrical switches, cameras, telephones, vacuum cleaners, and car seats. Many of his designs, like the Arco and Brera lamps, the Firenze wall clock, the RR 126 stereo system, and the Primate seat, achieve the highest standards of visual art as well as design, and several of his works are featured in the design collections of major museums. Taking as his motto ''Design demands observation,'' Castiglioni has created objects that are inspired by and respond to the demands of everyday life, basing some of his most famous designs on quotidian objects like a street lamps or a car's front reflector. His work is marked throughout by an attention both to the timeless essentials of great design and to the changing behavior and values of modern culture. Anyone wanting to learn the fine details of training their dog for hunt tests or field trials could learn a great deal fromn this book. Mr. Spencer breaks down the various factors which play in setting up training sessions or tests into component pieces. I have found many people do not understand why their dogs do what they do faced with various factors of wind, terrain and mark placement. This book will help the novice and experienced trainer begin to analyze these factors. One result is a better sense of what your dog dog nees to learn to be successful in field competitions. It's a great book for someone aspiring to become a judge.

Great retriever training book.......2001-03-08

James Spencer shows different scenarios to set up for training your retriever. These tests can help all hunting retrievers: from your companion in the blind to your field trial champion. Note this book does not go into teaching commands. It focuses on marking and blind setups. He also goes on to discuss different types of competition. This book is filled with ideas and concepts you can put to use next time you are in the field.

The book is well written and has excellent pictures detailing each herb. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know about many common herbs, their history and their uses.

THE NEW HERB BIBLE was written by a garden designer, a beautician, and an osteopath/naturopath. The authors provide a much useful information about the major herbs used in cooking, cosmetics, and healing. Some of the material is quite good, but there are omissions and discrepancies the novice will not catch. The book is filled with many lovely photographs, a must for best selling gardening books these days, but not always an indicator the text is the most comprehensive, accurate, or current.

The "gardening" section of the book covers herbs that do well around London, but many of them may do better or worse in the States. For example, England sits on a nice chalk base and English Lavender does quite well along walkways. In the hot, humid, and acid soil found in many parts of the states, Lavender rots (does well in the Great Valley of Virginia which sits on a limestone bed!!). The authors suggest that the blue Cranesbill Geranium `Johnston's Blue' and the Lady's Mantle Alchemilla Mollis will bloom all summer, but they won't south of the Mason-Dixon line or in most of the west beyond the Mississippi. These plants bloom in the spring in the Upper South, and then they fry. Experienced gardeners know that certain roses do well in London, but others do well in the States.

The "cosmetic" section of this book is fun, and probably the best reason to buy it. However, making cosmetics is work, and if you have Fresh Fields next door, you may prefer to buy herbal cosmetics-I do. However, if you feel adventuresome, you too can make mint eye lotion and rose and basil perfume, provided you are able to grow the roses that produce the attar you need for the latter. You won't have any trouble at all growing the mint.

The "medicinal" section of this book is interesting, but I prefer Penelope Ody's COMPLETE BOOK OF MEDICINAL HERBS (she's English) or THE GARDEN PHARMACY by James Duke (retired from the USDA). RODALE'S ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HERBS is also a good bet (organic). You will probably want to own more than one book on the subject of medicinal herbs since some herbs can kill if they are misapplied. As the medicinal use of herbs is a tricky subject, I believe in a little cross-referencing. For example, the verdict is still out on Ginko, an "herb" recommended by this book (with caution). THE NEW HERB BIBLE mentions recent drug trials where possible, as does Dr. Duke and the RODALE book. Even when you are fully informed by books, a little trial and error will be required as all of us have different constitutions.

THE NEW HERB BIBLE is a useful survey work, but probably more useful for those living in England (5 stars) than the States (3 stars).

I don't mean to detract in any way from this book. The guys are beautiful, and the pictures are superb, but I was disappointed that this was not a collection of total nudes. Ordering books and discovering after the fact that all the models are still wearing their underwear is something that happens to me a little more often than I would like it too. I live in Florida; if I want to be teased by partially nude men, I can go to the beach.

One of the most important books of modern Korea.......2004-02-16

My review title reflects my own experience in Korean society during the 1980s as a college student. At that time, the Korean translation of this book 'Ariran' (actually, the correct Korean sound is 'Arirang') was read among many Korean college students in addition to the biography of Cheon Tae-Il, a young worker who self-immolated in 1970 protesting against the harsh working condition and the poor treatment of factory workers by employers and the military regime. These books' consciousness-awakening influence may have been like that of Marcuse in the US during the 1960s and 70s or that of Howard Zinn now, and they are still being read in Korea.

Many college students awakened by their modern history's agony and workers' poor condition just dropped out of school and went to factories and other sites for engaging in or organizing social movements for progress and emancipation, which people now call 'democratization' in a more or less technical way.

Actually, this book was published in 1941 in the US by a prominent American woman journalist, Nym Wales, who went to China for the purpose of writing newspaper articles and interviewing the leaders of Chinese revolution with then her husband, Edgar Snow, who was the author of a well-known book, the Red Stars of Chinese Revolution.

If you read this beautifully written book 'Ariran'(actually, Arirang is more corrent in terms of pronunciation, which means somebody who is loved and missed so much according to a general interpretation of the term, or a lost country by imperialism according to a more political interpretation), you can get some ideas of not-so-much studied events in East Asian history during the 1920s and 30s from the author's description of a Korean revolutionary (Kim San, whose real name is Jang Ji-Rak), who left Korea occupied by Japanese imperialism at that time, went to the mainland, and finally engaged in the several battles of Chinese Revolution believing the Revolution as the first step toward a region-wide revolutions including Korean and Japanese ones.

His earlier experience in Korea of changing his identity from a Christian to a Anarcho-Socialist revolutionary after seeing the Japanese brutality of bloody suppression during the March 1st Independence movement in 1919 is also revealing(tragically, he was executed in his thirties by Chinese communists who labelled him a Trotskyist shortly after this book was published in the US, but his contribution to the revolution was recently recognized by the Chinese government). This is a tragic but inspiring saga incorporating a history of imperialism and revolution and an existential story into one person's life.

Kim San, whom Nym Wales found as the most attractive figure among her interviewees including famous revolutionaries, was a person who could discuss in English with her and translated some Russian revolutionary texts into Korean as an intellectual but also was a combatant in several significant battles in the revolution. He may be considered someone like Che Guevara in the East.

This book is a classic. And I wonder why this book is out of print. Nym Wales wrote a great book, which stimulated a historical imagination so strongly that many people could change their own lives in Korea by reading it even after the book was published decades ago.

Kim San, a Korean Communist who triumphed over himself.......2002-04-15

Kim San was executed during the Communist revolution in China. He was a promising communist who dremt korea's independence. He thought that the success of chinese communism would ultimately bring about the defeat of japan. And this would produce korea's independence. That's why he worked for Chinese communism.

He said that I was defeated to everything, I lost my mother country, and I lost my youth because I was devoted to independence movement. But I triumphed over myself.

Even though, he lost his life during revolution movement. His life itself is the reflection our modern era.

Try to read this book, you can get a glimpse of Korean culture and korean people's way of thinking.

Most of korean intellectuals have read this book. Before '90, south korean government prohibited the publishing of this book.
