Awesome book.......2007-03-13
I bought this book when I was a kid from a book fair or something and it was one of my favorites. It had all these different facts about killer plants and I was all like "whoa, that is totally radical!" and made that face that kids have in commercials when they enjoy the product being sold. Anyway, it's a great book with amazing photographs.
Don't bother with this one..........2006-06-01
older title, thin paperback book. there is so much better out
there today, this si a waste of money.

Book Description
This friendly and easy-to-use book will guide you—effortlessly, and at just the right tempo—through the cultural, artistic, and culinary generosity of a beautiful city. —Alice Waters
Nestled between the Alps and the Po River, Turin was hailed by Le Corbusier as the most beautifully situated city he'd ever seen, and by Giorgio de Chirico as the “most profound, most enigmatic, most disquieting city not only of Italy, but of the world.” Today Turin, an elegant city of more than a million people, with views of the Alps around every corner, is home to Italy's most vibrant contemporary art scene, as well as extraordinary architecture, sophisticated shops, and food and wine that are an epicurean's dream.
A Civilized Traveller's Guide to Turin features:
* detailed listings of Turin's cultural attractions, from the one-of-a-kind Museum of Cinema to the world-renowned Museo Egizio, which holds the most significant collection of Egyptian artifacts outside of Cairo
* personal recommendations for hotels, restaurants, cafes, and shops
* walks through the city's medieval, Baroque, and modern neighborhoods
* suggestions for short trips around the region, ideas for what to do with children, and more

Paul Fleischman offers a glimpse at the Trojan War through modern day newspaper headlines. By equating such events as Agamemnon offering sacrifice to the Greeks before sailing to Troy with George Bush's declaration of a national day of prayer after sending troops to the Persian Gulf, or the massacre of the Trojans by the Greeks to the My Lai incident in Vietnam, Fleischman helps young scholars understand the myth through present-day events and attitudes. Each page of text is enhanced by a collage of newspaper clippings relating to a particular piece of the myth.
Customer Reviews:
Not appropriate for grade schoolers.......2005-01-27
My 11-year-old son brought this book home from the grade school library and, upon first glance, I thought it would be an interesting book. However, as I flipped through the book and saw the newspaper clippings the other reviewers mentioned, I was somewhat startled. Some of them read: "Japan Admits WWII Use of Sex Slaves," "War Protester Burns Herself To Death Here," and "Newborn Found in Dumpster." There were several other, similar articles. This may be fine for young adults of junior high age or higher, but not for grade school kids.
Are modern humans and institutions like Ancient Greece?.......2003-08-14
I have read, both in my childhood and adulthood, many different versions of the Trojan War. The version in this book is well written for both adult and younger audiences.
What is most interesting in this book, however, is its attempt in every page to relate something about behaviors and practices in Ancient Greece to those we find in modern times. The author very ably does this by placing selected newspaper articles - mostly from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s - across each page of the the text as the story of the Trojan War unfolds.
Thus, the book presents subtle comparisons between King Priam's consultation of the Priest of Apollo and a newspaper report of how former President Reagan and his wife used astrology; the competition among Greek godesses to find the fairest among them with a study in the 1990s by some Pennsylvania scientists on how infants respond differently to images of pretty and plain looking women; the spreading of disinformation during the Trojan War to the modern use of psychological warfare; and other comparisons between Ancient Greece and the modern world.
This book thus provides both adult and young readers a foundation to dialogue on how human civlization and institutions have both evolved - and also remained constant in some respects - throughout the ages. This is a very interesting and commendable effort by the author.
Dateline: Troy.......2003-02-27
Dateline: Troy
Book review
The book Dateline: Troy is all about the war against the Trojans and the Greeks. They are fighting over a woman named Helen. The reason that they are fighting over her is because a guy named Paris was asked by 3 goddess` which one of them was the fairest. He eventually picked Aphrodite the goddess of love. Since he picked her she granted him the love of any one he desired. He chose Helen, a married Greek, to be his love. She went to him under the spell. The Greeks didn`t like this, so the war began.
I think this book is confusing because almost every page is about a different person. I also think this book is very exciting because they attack each other all the time. My favorite part is when the Greeks build the wooden horse and pile inside it. They give it to the Trojans saying that they give up. The Trojans take it inside their walls. When the Trojans fell asleep, the Greeks inside attack them while they`re unaware.
If you like books about war, love, and myths, this is a good book for you.
joe's review.......2003-02-26
There was a king and a queen of Troy and they had a kid that was put to death when it was born,it did not die. He grow up and become the leader of Troy, than he went and fought the Greeks. It was call the Trojan war and Troy lost. They wanted even so they made a big horse filled with Troys men. They sent it to the Greeks castle as a present and they the Greeks took it in the castle. The man in the horse came out at night and killed all.
I would recommend this book to someone who likes Greek myths. If you like hard books this is the book for you with all of its hard names. If you like war books you may like this book.If you like all of the above this book is for you you would love it. It is also a good because it has things that are going on in the story on one side of the page and on the other there are things happening from the First World War to the Gulf War.
Even know my opinion of this piece of literature is I did not like it you I do not like these kind of books so if you do my opinion is you should get this book. Just because my opinion of the book is one thing does not mean you would not like it.
Dateline Troy book reveiw.......2003-02-25
Dateline Troy takes place in the ancient days of the Trojan war. The main characters are, Hecuba, the queen of Troy and the mother of Paris. King Priam, The father of Paris and king of Troy. Paris, the lost prince of Troy,Helen, King Menelaus' wife and queen of Sparta, and Odysseus the brave warrior and king of Ithaca.
One of the important events in this story was the Trojan War and the story of the giant wooden horse. That's one of the themes of this story. Never let you guards down,But I think the author had something more important to get through to the readers. This book shows how modern events can parallel with the events that happened in the ancient times by showing pictures of newspapers with the events from the past years. Specially abridged text for young readers.
Customer Reviews:
Not quite what I expected, but just what I wanted.......2005-09-08
This "coloring book" is not just a coloring book: it's a book that you can color. It is a little more than 50% text, with 31 illustrations (usually half-page or less) over 48 pages. The line art pictures are detailed and could be colored or left alone; they are not at all baby-ish in their qualities. The text is a reasonable abridged version that I think an above-average second grader might be able to read without difficulty, and would be appropriate for girls up to about age 12.
The paper is relatively thick and high quality -- not at all like the cheap pulp/newsprint sort of coloring books that you find for 99 cents at the grocery store. The binding is three staples, but since the book is large (8.25 by 11 inches), it will lay flat enough to color. The cover is thick, glossy, and has full-color illustrations inside and out.
I bought two copies of this as a gift, to go with a copy of the original book, which will be too difficult just now for the children in question. I had expected simpler drawings and only a very few lines of text, and had been wondering if I ought to buy an abridged book so they could read it. Consequently, I am absolutely delighted to discover that this coloring book includes a simplified story with wonderful, beautiful drawings.
This coloring book is "not what I expected, but just what I wanted."

this book is not for the never owned a dog,new dog owner........1999-10-13
While the author's approach is very no-nonsense, the book had no flow, examples of specific behavior problems where scattered throughout, and some sections did not even have a complete solution. the author is writing this for experienced dog owners. Of course most refrences were to puppies, and I did not agree that these methods work with older dogs.. very confusing book.
Must read for every dog owner. Common sense dog training........1998-12-06
As a former dog owner considering getting a new canine friend, I was very impressed with this book. The author's approach is extremely no-nonsense and focussed on effective training techniques. The book is highly readable and both I and my wife read the book in less than hour each. Compared to this book, most of the other books on dog-training that I have read pale, and seem outdated in their methodology.
I was looking for his second follow-up book but could not find it.

Great book!.......2007-02-03
My daughter and I just read this book last week. It is a great book and I'm glad to have it in our library! :)
Cool subject matter!.......2003-12-02
I bought this book for my daughter and she loved it! And I found an adult companion book on Amazon: "Chats de Venise" by Robert de Laroche, that I loved, but it turned out to be handy with her, because I could show her the pictures of the real cats in Venice, like Papa Piccolo and his "found" kittens!!
Rich in learning possibilities.......2000-04-05
The illustrations are very eye catching for young children. My5 yo child enjoyed learning about Italy. She was interested to learnmore about why a city would have streets of water. This book was a huge hit. We must have read this book at least six times the first week after getting it.
This book is a great springboard to learning possibilities such as cats, adoption, fatherhood, gondolas (boats), and Italy. The inside front cover has information to inhance the understanding of the book. Information given on Marco Polo, Venice, Italian words and phrases, and more.
I'm glad to have this book as part of our home library.

In the spirit of Hans Silvester's brilliant feline photo collections, including Cats in the Sun and Asleep in the Sun, Shin Otani's The Cats of Venice celebrates the charming Italian city and its bewhiskered inhabitants. Eighty full-color photographs capture the legendary waterways, gondolas, and glorious Renaissance architecture. Asleep in shop windows, lolling on park benches, and ambling along the cobbled streets are an assortment of content kitties, some strays, and some household pets. The featured felines are mainly good old-fashioned tabby cats, a sprinkling of black-and-whites, and grays. Otani skillfully portrays the mystery and romance of Venice as well as the enigmatic cats that wander its streets. --Naomi Gesinger
Book Description
Famous for its beautiful waterways, Venice is also renowned for its slinky, stoic, adorable cats. Presenting 80 gorgeous color images, photographer Shin Otani offers a cat's-eye view of the city that has enchanted travelers for centuries. Peering through the morning mist, prowling along the Grand Canal, or basking in the golden Mediterranean sun, the cats of Venice embody all the mystery and grace of old Europe. Stone and terra-cotta plazas, languid canals, windows with brightly painted shutters, and spiraling wrought iron set the stage for the ramblings of these lucky cats. At once a portrait of Venice's famous felines and an homage to a magical place, The Cats of Venice will delight lovers of both the city of canals and its favorite four-legged citizens.

Book Description
This calendar continues to create chemistry with the imaginative sensibility of capturing felines relaxing, sleeping or at play in a city that first imported the animals around 900AD for the purely utilitarian purpose of rodent control. While they managed effectively at this task, they themselves began to proliferate. Their population rose significantly and they slowly began to add to the folklore of Venice, a native of the "Venetian Bestiary". Venice is a perfect habitat for cats. It enjoys a mild climate for most of the year. It is the absence of cars and the maze of alleys that really make up this cat haven.
This certain perfection is reflected in the cats themselves. They hold a regal aire and behave as though Venice and her Cats have co-existed for time immemorial. They can be seen sitting in the middle of a busy piazza, creating a small detour for shoppers on a busy summer afternoon. What is most fascinating is the unusual relationship between cats and dogs. In Venice, dogs do not give chase to cats. They, instead, tend to cautiously walk around a cat, and not without great interest. They will look confused as their instincts are overtaken by the feline's presence, which often includes a powerful stare from the cat. Interestingly, should the cat break the bond and run, the dog will take chase. But that is rare indeed.
The population of feral cats has declined significantly sine the introduction of a catch and release program called DINGO. Cats are trapped, spayed and neutered and released. Housing is built and food is provided. This program is entirely community supported. Since its introduction, the DINGO has served as a model for more and more cities around the world combating this serous problem of cat overpopulation. This calendar features several DINGO cats.

kitty envy.......2003-01-04
I recieved this calender as a wonderful gift and have brought it to my place of work in a hospital. All my co-workers love it and we have lots of fun looking at the photos, imagining ourselves there with the cats. This of course between dashing off to care for another patient. Thanks for offering this great year long enjoyment.
Great Photography!.......2002-12-14
Even though cats often make willing subjects, they can be challenging to photograph in unique and interesting ways. This calendar combines the beauty of Venice and the undeniable charm of cats in a perfect setting. Well done! I look forward to more of the same next year.
Charming and sophisticated........2002-12-11
I got this calendar for myself since I almost always get a cat calendar. This one did not disappoint. The images are a far cry from most cat calendars out there today. Yes there are many cute cat pictures, but there are also Venetian pictures - the canals, bridges, piazzas, churches...and the cats just look like naturals! There are 3 additional photos on each calendar page, each very good. I highly recommend the calendar for cat owners or Italophiles.
Sophisticated and Cute.......2002-12-11
I bought this calendar because I love Venice and adore cats! I
received my copy today and was pleased right away with the thick glossy paper and packaging. Once inside, I turned the months and found each main image very unique. None are quite the same, each having a certain feel that captures Venice and at the same time brings out the cat's adorable nature. It also has an addded touch by providing an additional 39 photos. Very good photography. I highly recommend this for any cat lover.
Great Gift!.......2002-12-08
If you are like me, a cat lover dreaming to go to Venice, you will love this calendar. Buy it for anyone you know who enjoys cats and beautiful scenery. It is sure to bring smiles throughout 2003.

Book Description
After the successful 2003 edition, Jeanne Good and Christopher Gudenzi are back with an even better pictorial essay of the Venetian cats. Not just close ups of cute cats, this calendar shows cats against a setting of scenic Venice. With its maze of alleys, lovely palazzos and its absence of cars, Venice is the perfect place for cats. Cats were first introduced to Venice over a 1000 years ago to control the rodent population. As such, the Venetians hold their felines in high esteem. Depicts captivating cats and kittens in piazzas, palazzos, on boats and on bridges. Some of the cats are feral, or "Dingo" cats. These cats are captured and fixed, then released. Shelters resembling little dog houses are built and food is provided by the DINGO orginazation. DINGO is funded entirely by citizen donation. The months of March, July and August show beautiful DINGO cats. One of the inset images shows a "DINGO condo", or housing. Includes 13 monthly, 39 inset images. Wall Calendar, 24" x! 13" wide, open. Soy based inks used. USA, UK, Australia, NZ, Canada holidays included. A portion of sales are donated to the SPCA. ggcalendars.com

cats are part of the scenery.......2003-12-04
One of the things I like about this cat calendar is that the cats are part of the scenery rather than placed in a contrived setting. Even without the cats, the images of Venice would be beautiful and make a great calendar.

the story of a wonderful brother.......2000-06-03
This is the true story of a wonderful Christian brother - Harry Lee. A man who lived in the times of the cultural revolution in China, who at one time lived quite well and had servants, but who later would lose everything that he loved including his sister and brother. And his Russian refugee sweetheart Nadia would flee the country. It is the story of a man who unjustly spent 7 years in a prison cell no wider than you could spread your arms along with three other men, who slept every night sardine style with a toilet bucket by his head. He had only a bowl of rice a day, which he would put water into to give it the illusion of fullness. When the propaganda announcements came over the loudspeaker everyday he would sing his Christian hymns under the noise so that even those who knew him wondered if he had become a communist. This is the story of man who would then spend another four years on a prison farm after being released from prison - a prison farm that killed his brother. This is the story of a man of great conviction and courage who waited his entire life for the Lord to bless him and use him.
But the story does not end where the book ends. After graduating from seminary - dream that he waited his entire adult life to realize, he met his old sweetheart Nadia again, but she was married to another man - she had received no word from Harry and had decided to get on with her life. But as only God knows why, her husband died and after her grieving was completed she married Harry Lee. So finally, after years of waiting, he was reunited with his lost love. But alas, during one of his never-ceasing speaking engagements, Harry became ill, and he shortly thereafter passed from this life to the next.
I will always remember Harry Lee as a softspoken gentleman who bore the marks on his body from the nightly beatings that he suffered at the hands of the communists. I will remember him as the missionary who happened to come into town when I was befriending some teenage Chinese Acrobats and that he gave me tracts to give to them. But what I remember most is that he was the epitome of what we all strive to become in our walks with the Lord. May his story richly bless you.
