The descriptions of the walks and of the excursions (presumably car-based) appear very useful; we'll be trying some of them in a few weeks. The book would have been more attractive & useful with more photos, especially color photos, & more maps would also be helpful--but what's there will help a great deal in prioritizing what we do.

The Italian dolomites offer the best hiking anywhere. Lost of variety great food reasonable prices and lots of people who speak English. This book gives accurate information, wonderful hotel recommendations and suggests towns I would not have discovered elsewhere. A must for anyone who hikes. The hikes may be easy for some, but it there are lots of more diffucilt options when you get there. We followed the Liptons advice and had a fabulous trip!

This is a guide for the serious perennial gardener. It is useful as a reference for planning a perennial garden that will always have some feature of interest, no matter what the season. Many of us (myself included) tend to plant gardens that reach their peak in May and June, and after that, only the occasional aster or sedum lights up the landscape. "Gardening with Perennials Month by Month" allows you to plan out your garden from March through September, without any dead spots in the blooming season.

A calendar of blooming times and available colors begins each monthly chapter, and the author's suggestions are geared to Zone 6 American gardeners (he is a resident of Massachusetts). Gardeners in different zones will have to adjust accordingly.

There are over 400 color photographs, focused primarily on a particular species, rather than how that species appears in a landscape. In fact, if I were allowed to make a suggestion for the next edition of "Gardening with Perennials Month by Month" it would be to include information on which plants look and do well when grouped in close proximity.

Suggestion for other gardeners: use "The Well-Tended Perennial Garden" by Tracy Disabato-Aust in conjunction with "Gardening with Perennials Month by Month." Disabato-Aust is more informative about the impact of a particular perennial in the landscape as a whole. She also includes useful information on how to extend the blooming season (mainly by pruning).

Essential reference, comprehensive.......2000-01-03

The instant I saw this book I knew I had to have it. It is an essential guide for any gardener growing perennials. With its index & extensive lists it allows anyone to easily find plants to suit their landscape.

Flowers are listed for each month from March through September. Conveniently, at the start of each chapter, there is a list of flowers by color. Plants are then listed alphabetically by scientific name.

For each plant there is information on its common name, flowering span, physical description, zone & culture. Other data may include native habitat, cultivation, bothersome diseases or pests & small color photos.

A great reference section in the back lists plants by characteristics, including those that bloom all season long, 6 weeks or more & in the winter. Fruit bearing, drought resistant, moisture loving & shade tolerant varieties are also listed.

In contrast with W.R. Blain's book for "Marina Developments" -That is an excellent and maybe the only book about Marinas from a structural standpoint- this one is an architectural approach to Marinas and all the elements around it such as Yacht Club, Apartments, Houses, Restaurants and all related services. It's full of details and references in a text that is catchy and easy to read. My only concern was that I thought it was pricy in the first place despite that it was printed and bounded in Italy, but Blain's book is above the $250 and this one is more related to interior design and architecture so it's worth 5 out 5 starts.

Good reference for vegetarian menu choices.......2006-06-22

As a dietitian who deals with childhood obesity, I like the way she addresses having a snack shelf for your child. She explains ingredients well and has a chart for legume and grain cooking that I have memorized. However, having been a vegetarian for 26 years, I find the baked goods overloaded with banana.

We use the granola recipe, but found Vegan Planet a better all-round recipe book.

This was a well written book though I did not realize it focused on vegetarian dishes. Still - it's all good, just may be hard to find some of the ingredients.

Overall, it is a pretty good book. What I found laughable was her comparison menus in the back of the book. For the unhealthy ones there was just soda, fruit drinks, and chocolate milk listed for the entire breakfast on some days. I may not be the healthiest person in the world, but I would never give that to my child as a meal and don't know anyone else who would either. It's one thing to point out the unhealthy foods that she does with other meals; it's another to consider her examples as mainstream. There are good recipes and menus if you're raising your children vegetarian/vegan; if you aren't, this is definitely not the book for you.

The recipes in this book are very unrealistic for the average chef. The receipes are more suited for vegetarians that have more of the unusual spices in their kitchens that these receipes suggest/require. e.g. Main Course Hummas Plates (Does that sound tasty to a child ?)

ANOTHER GREAT OFFERING.......2007-05-26

This work, Volume VI, is like the others. A wonderful history of how it was. In this day and age of having most needs meet and something for everyone on the Wal-mart shelf, we tend to forget just what it was like in our not too distant past. These books, the Foxfire books, brings to light skills, attitudes and a way of life that is all but forgotten. This is a good thing. When a people lose their history, they lose part of their soul. As the title of this work states, from shoemaking to toys, to games and musical instruments, this addresses many of the old forgotten skills and there is so much more. The editors have done a wonderful job. They have made a very honest effort to replicate the dialect of those places and times and I feel that this is a big part of the charm of these books. I am old enough to have known many of the kinds of folks featured in these books, being only one generation past them, and have a great appreciation for what and how they did all the little things we take so for granted now. I might also suggest that you actually try some of the things mentioned in these volumes. It will give you even more of an appreciation for what they did, and hey, who knows, the skill you develope just might come in handy one of these days! Recommend this and the other Foxfire books highly.

The firefox series continues to amaze me with it's simplicity and beautiful documentation of the Mountain life style. The other lesson is that we all need to pass forward what we have learned and loved to the next generation and the next and the next ... Picking up the earlier FF books is well worthwhile, every one a jewel.

good do-it-yourself stuff in here!.......2000-06-14

If you're interested in how people did things before Wal-mart, you might want to check out Foxfire 6, as well as the rest of the Foxfire series of books (1-10)... These focus on Appalachian living, and how Appalachian folks did things before moderization. These are the only books I know of that truly show you hands on ways to make instruments, locks, dig a well, make toys, and even cook a good meal--- simply. Another good thing is that even though they are very complete, they are actually pretty interesting to read. Most survival-type books are focused on all sorts of weird Armageddon/nuclear war stuff, but these are just records of how life used to be. All in all, a worthy purchase for anyone interested in actually learning something.

Great architect but the book could use some work.......2003-05-27

Cardwell does a good job discussing Maybeck's life and work and his effect on Bay Area architecture. Unfortunately, the pictures are black and white and they lack the punch that other Maybeck books have because of that. If you're interested in Maybeck however, it might be worth reading what Cardwell has to say about him given his close, personal relationship with him.
