This book really helped me identify weeds vs.flowers in my garden. I really like the fact that it contains photos and not drawings.

Finally, a good book on weeds........2006-03-26

Most weed books have too many line drawings, or pictures of weeds in only one stage of growth. This book has the weed from seed, to seedling to maturity. I especially liked the cross-reference to similar weeds, so you can be aware that you might be confusing the two and can then check the referenced page number. The book is well organized with colour codings, has a great pictorial glossary and the index contains both the common name and the latin name. There is a quick flower key colour at the beginning of the book, so you can start your search with the easiest of efforts.
I am also pleased it isn't a huge bible of weeds, too heavy to take with you in your backpack. Instead, it is the right amount of information and anything further and needing more of a detailed account can be found out later on the internet.

Weed is a matter of opinion.......2005-09-27

What is a weed to one, can be a beautiful flower to another! I think the book is fabulous. It is filled with wonderful pictures, thorough descriptions of each stage of growth, and great keys (mature plants by flower color, seedlings, grasses). A MUST if you're trying to determine if that plant growing in your garden is worth keeping. Note: this book is written from an agrigulturalist perspective, hence my comments regarding weeds vs flowers. That said, it is still a great source of information for all gardners as well as farmers and other comercial industries.

Good addition to library.......2002-08-07

This is a good resource, although I prefer Uva's Weeds of the Northeast mainly because of its superior pictures. Some of the pictures in this book aren't very helpful for identifying plants. For example, I couldn't recognize first-year burdock leaves from the pictures. Some common northeastern US weeds are missing too, although that complaint can't also be made from the Uva book. The writeups are good though, and I'm sure it'll be a reference I'll use.

Weeds of Canada and..........2002-07-26

Strangely enough in Canada this book has "CANADA" writ large under weeds with the "& northern united states" in small letters on same cover!! Anyways, I bought this book because it is so clearly indexed by both seedling and adult stage (categorized by leaf type, and then subcategorized by flower color). It has very clear photos, so I am not sure what the other reviewer is talking about. The photos include separate photos of flowers, seeds, whole plant, and sometimes leaves and other distinguishing characteristics (ie leaf attachment in the grasses). There are a few places where a better photo of leaves would help, esp if the plant is in the between seedling and flowering stage.But compared with the three other books I have on weeds, the illustrations are much more precise and easy to reference.

This is definitely a book written for crop farmers, since there is more information on how much it depreciates crop yield ("Reasons for Concern"), than how to get rid of the weed for gardeners.However, I think that once you can identify a weed, it is very simple to find info (chemical, organic etc) on how to deal with it.

One feature that I find excellent is "Similar Species", which includes a photo.I find that this helps remove doubt in identification, or gives a hint where to look if one is mistaken.

Seeing as how I am trying to identify weeds in order to find edible ones rather than eradicate them, I would have appreciated an "edible/poisonous/inedible" designation for each plant. However once I have identified it, I can then refer to a more detailed book such as "Edible Wild Plants: A North American Field Guide: by Elias & Dykeman" to see if the plant is edible and how to prepare it.

The main reason I am giving this book 4 stars vs 5 is that it seems to be lacking some fairly common weeds. I cannot find deadly (climbing) nightshade in it, which grows here in Montreal alleyways. Nor could I find goldenrod (Solidago L.). I really don't understand how such common weeds could be left out.

Basically an easy to use reference guide that is handy to flip through and consult while out in the field.

TERRIBLE.......2006-03-13

I just returned from Chile. This book was horrible. Maps were wrong. Prices, hours and addresses were way off. The section on the Torres Del Paine is absolutely worthless. I doubt their guide writer even went there. Buy the Lonely Planet guide instead. I ended up throwing the Lets Go away and borrowing a Lonely Planet guide from a fellow traveler.

An Excellent Travel Guide.......2005-06-26

After just returning from a two week adventure in Chile, I found the guide book very helpful navigating through the major destinations in the country. Not only does the book give travel information, but interesting background information such as history, government, and social norms any traveler should know before setting off. The information is accurrate and really easy to use. The only flaw of the book is that it does not include some of the really small towns. However, these towns seemed to have no real major attractions in them. The book helps normal travelers and those people who like to experience a country on their own schedule.

Good beginner's book, but don't rely on it only........2000-02-08

I own one dozen books on rat care, some current, some vintage (ie, printed before 1980). I've read the books by Ducommon, Mays, Fox, Cardinal, Himsel, and Bulla. This book differs from them in that it is intended for the younger rat person, of about 8 or so. It scans the basics of rat care in simple, easy words, copiously illustrated, and with little sidebar snippets of info. It glances briefly at handling your new rat, what to feed him, what sort of home to provide, and how to recognize common health problems in rats, such as ring tail. I've only discovered one outright error in the text, which is a snippet, so it may not be Mr. Viner's words (though the editor should have caught it). On page 7, the norway rat and the roof rat (rattus rattus aka black rat) are confused. This is hardly earth shattering, and the pet care info seems accurate enough.I disagree with the blanket statement that the aquarium home is better than the cage home; both forms have drawbacks and advantages.

I would give this book to a little boy or girl who just got his/her first rat(s). It will inform them of what they need to do and how to do it,and add to the selfconfidence they need in dealing with a new pet. Mom and dad should have a copy of the Ducommon book handy, when more detailed info is needed.

Breakthrough in headvase books.......2004-03-04

This book is filled with the most wonderful pictures and the price guide is very useful. It is so great that Maddy Gordon chose to focus on Betty Lou's headvases. They are classic and timeless. Although I only have a few in my collection, having this book always allows me to look at the beautiful pictures.

Great book and Guide.......2003-11-12

Not only is this a wonderful display of Betty Lou head vases, but it is also a wonderful price guide. It is a must for any head vase collecter and I also recommend it for collectors of anything, as it makes a terriffic coffee table book! I found the book most pleasurable to flip through and very useful as a price guide.

Everyone should know Hogarth.......2007-05-14

Hogarth is the best. His rich images of the moral underbelly of London are as resonant today as they ever were. The level of draftsmanship is high. The many symbolic details are superb. The plotlines combine moral outrage with lurid vouyerism with smirking satire - Bret Easton Ellis should have spent forty years as a Hogarth scholar before attempting to write his first book. This edition is cheap and large, with commentary that is a pleasure to read. I recommend it to anyone.

this book is pretty awesome, it contains a lot of hogarth's popular print series and is an oversized book, which i guess could be a good or bad thing. i thought it was pretty awesome. if you like hogarth and dont have a lot of money, get this book, cause its like 14 dollars or something. all of the dover books are good in general i guess

Quality Reproductions and Insight into a Bygone Age.......2000-02-04

The large size of the pages (11X14)allows the reader to appreciate the quality and detail of Hogarth's work. Beyond the artistic merit of the engravings, I have found them to be of great value in understanding England of the 1700's. As it is said, "a picture is worth a thousand words". This is especially true with Hogarth, who was as much a humorist and social commentator as he was an artist. Sean Shesgreen provides the (absolutely) necessary background and explanitory information to understand the pictures.
